You're listening to Bob tandem in the garden on talk radio 560. 2. A Welcome back to Dr radio if I 60 has them all bogged down here in your garden let's go to Rich in Nevada Oh and thanks for hanging on there it's. Carol Corey well. My thought my question has to do its Ok nice. States directly in the ground. In the race it's because of the Gulf will go for under me so the last 2 years I've done those I get beautiful as the candy plants we get tons of detainees and then halfway through the se then I get attacked by these great beetles that you know cheat on the leaders they watch. Day and past the roots and I see tons of babies at the roots and then eventually date the rats are killed a point and my question is what they've already done this cleared off Was there anything I can do with the soil now up for next season or what do I do next season yeah what I would do right now is to remove the plan and put it in a garbage can yes and then cover the area with black plastic Ok that will heat up the temperature to the point where you will kill all the eggs . Still in that sort of oh yeah that well that's where they come from the eggs or the latest. In the roots of the plant and stuff like that and they will then they adult eats the interior of the zucchini or the squash their coats washed bugs and they then multiply of course and so what you need to do is to eliminate that by sterilizing the soil and the soil it's pretty easy by just putting out black plastic over the top of it and leave it on for what I would do is to water well put the black plastic on and that sort of like sterilizes the soil so you don't have a problem next year. Ok. Next year do you see. Is there anything. I would say yeah you can see where. You can spray with pen a sad which is an organic insecticide that will eliminate the problem as well what's with the adults only suggest. To me actually it's Captain Jack's bug brew Captain Jack but it's called spin a say Ok. Let's say thank you. All right Rich any other problem just call me a 2 way 5600 and by the way I do have a Web site not a well Bob damn them dot com and then I help so have e-mail which is Bob town I'm at aol dot com So thanks for the call and thanks for waiting there Richard let's go to Catherine and Pembroke Hi there Catherine hi Bob good morning listen I have a question dealing with those beds that you have the know will drip system so what they decided to do to 17 by 17 beds they're going to take it all apart it's you know 4 feet off the ground and they're going have to take the whole system down underneath so I have a lot of stuff in there that I don't want to just rip out the last one of which is Rosemary I planted that in that day 3 years ago it's Sri state high I also had some French tears on auditioning but with the rosemary would I be able to how far down the plan I have to date to take that to transplant. And I would this is not the best time of the year to transplant but I wait until if you can get some rain going before let's say October would be the better time if you could wait till then if Yeah and that would be the time probably around the 10th of October would be the best way to do that Ok and then water just water well if it hasn't rained already and it would only We're going to get some rain sooner and that's why we'll take all we can get so anyway Catherine Yeah don't be in a rush to move all that material because as the cool weather comes in they will perhaps plant better. Right so mid October and let's see if I can put it in the other beds if I get containers until this bed is fixed can't you she's making I do that you know temporary you know you put it in 10 or sure with some nice garden love stuff you know yeah yeah just temporarily sham planning Michio Kamen metal she wants to get that taken out you know the soil and there would be new. That while she suggests it which is great for everyone once they take that out what I was thinking I really want to turn that soil that they are was nothing in it that's like rock and it's because he's in a good school and I'm 108 that week so when they get that done should I just really break all that up and then put a whole bunch of darning a little a little you know make that in for what it is and when they put in it would be the best that would be my recommendation also if you have anybody with a lot of horses or something like that that you can get a bulk and maybe put 6 inches of stuff in you know fiber stuff into that material and turn it in and ground it up I think you'll be in good shape with that. That good oh I know now that I have it if you make your project it gets myself in October I'll be looking to move it. Catherine All right and I'm going to actually call you back we're going to take a little break so Bob and Joe Arjun sooty just hang on this is Bob down in the garden and it is talk radio 560 k. You're listening to Bob Dylan in the garden on talk radio 560. Brian welcome back to talk radio 560 cancer for Bob town and here in your garden let's go to Bob in fantic Clairon Hi there Bob good morning all are you doing this morning and I hope you're well I am far so good. Anyway I headed for one 1st question is about your guest is Amy Stewart is that's it spelled s t e w a r t or t u a r d i was going to look at their website to kind of snip. W s t w a r t s t e w a r t. Yes Ok good steward what Stuart got the other question is about my privet hedge I haven't from the way our hair it's about 100 feet long in a kind of. A rectangular shape in it and as I've got told you before about this about these little bites along all the leaves and. At the time you told me that the you thought it was some sort of but beneficial b. Or was that was doing this but it's just there's just thousands and thousands of leaves there today I never seen a bug there at all I'm just wondering if. What if it's and now is that the existing one that looks like a paper punch around the edge of the leaf just a little bites all the way around the loop hedges a lot a lot of the that is the be the. Current that leaf cutter be you know better be blunt here and then you know you're just I just don't see any end in sex have there but is there something I can spray on this to discourage them from doing that. Just maybe maybe some like it was. A small amount of soap or for maybe a. Tabasco so you could probably yeah you could use a one of the safer products the which would not would discourage them but not to kill them that would be something that I would recommend. There's always safer insecticidal soap. It's like Ok so it's actually a like a more of a soap that's I was thinking I was just maybe I could use some sort of. Dishwashing detergent this slight I would discourage them from their heads out I'm not quite so sure that they they. You're right I have never really seen one all I have seen is the effect of them but they do pollen eyes everything they're fruit fruit trees and flowers and that type of thing so I classify them as very you know important insecticides as that official. So I'm trying to discourage my tree from getting my edge from blossoming so I usually cut it as soon as I get to spread to false and I turn a lot of So 'd 'd I just it's just that there are so many so many leaves that are little darling that I'm trying to understand what you're trying to do there Bob. The insecticidal soap will to correct the situation and without killing them Ok we're not farming my head at all it's about 50 years all this is still doing very well 'd. No I think you're in good shape with that I just live with it and I think you'll be fine Ok all right point thank you very much thank you Bob Let's go to an in San Ramon Iran. Hi Bob I have a question about my hydrangea and similarly for the Nile plants and their stocks they have developed I've just noticed a bunch of brown lines going up where it going the length of this stock. On most of the stocks of the Agapanthus as well. And the hydrangea and I don't ever remember seeing this before neither of I. The only thing I can think of especially with the Agapanthus would be slug and snail I would suspect a very small little black slug would cause the lines going up and down the stalks of the. Agapanthus heads I don't know I don't think there's any connection with that to the hydrangea though there's something else on the high during her. You know I was just wondering I was at a will and I was using it and then I realized that I was seeing some negative effects I hadn't used it for a while there leave it chemicals are out of balance out of whack and I'm wondering if think that could be the cause something at all sure yeah they're probably right a lot of wells contain you know different kinds of. Minerals such as Boron which is of course a good guy bad guy kind of situation you need a little bit of break moron but to a little bit more than you what you need is too much so that's the problem you're having I think especially with the hydrangeas. I had planned to take some water and find a place that would do a chemical analysis for me and then. I don't know. But I would check out right now. I I think I'd have to look out in the valley where the Senate things occur more often Yeah try that in some rap and so I got ya I had stopped using that was that well water because I got afraid of it Ok So 'd that's the problem probably an obvious go for it so there you go all right and thanks for the call. Let's go to Susie and Elsa Reed Oh hi there Susie. I was wondering what's the best way who fertilize the boat and flowers. I always use compost would be just enough but it doesn't seem to me and so do you recommend dry liquid or fully or Oh and I have a new grid system that was put in so it is new for me to know how to do yeah so yeah I think the best way to use alfalfa pellets because they're somewhat neutral as far as they can't be burn or have be detrimental to the soil and they are just a really great product that you can use in their old you know the price is right especially with that and you can just you just indiscriminately just throw them into the ground and around the vegetables and not disturb anything now eventually you can in the fall after you start putting in your winter garden that's a totally different situation where you add your compost and you can probably add a organic vegetable fertiliser from a known local nurseries. How much conquest you suggest putting on when you were looking at a new bed I would put $2.00 to $3.00 inches of Ok I think I'm always too skinny. But you can't be stingy with your damage materials because they need the more more is better Ok Ok. Thank you very much thank you Susie for that call you take care bye bye let's go to Bill Bill is in San Jose Hi there how to get rid of skunk How do you do that. You got any ideas let me know Know I Can one of the things they're asking where are they in your garden ville. No in the backyard under all 3 Believe it or not at 1st you're in the front yard they get up a lot and I took care of that young and they want to wait and over sudden I let my dog out and she starts barking come back again and never under the oak tree under. Yeah corns. Ok so what I would do is you know once a week go out there and rake up all the acorns and put them in a pile or something like that and get rid of them put it in the garbage can and yeah I think that will get rid of your skunks Ok I never heard a strong quarter that's for truly off I know they go up there grubs I don't know they want after acorns Well you may have some insect in the acorns themselves I'd you know what you could do is take take a handful of the acorns and put them in up a job or something like that and they may have some little creepy crawlers coming out of them so take a look at that that's sort something to give you something to do for you know this coming week Ok. Ok thank you very much. Thanks for that call you take care of her right John is in San Jose Hi there John. Yeah I got brown leaves on my tummy which not looking very good anyway tell him that I don't eat edges is that if you're under water and over water I don't know where. It probably could be poured drainage John I think that more than likely is what's going on or it could be a sea Insana say this time of year it could be hoax under there you have rocks under there Ok well there are a river source rocks everywhere Oh Ok. Ok let me think about that one of the a little bit they could be a problem ha I think well if it's not drainage then because you have sandy soil and that type of thing underneath the Camille Yeah I think so but even if there is a health care if it's in the ground how can I change again it's there I know not really. How often do you water them. Every 3 days. Ok I would be Ok have you fertilized them. Yeah. How you feel so also taught since the fall that's what you hear that's the best one the round right now and it's organic You can't burn with it. And of course did you notice this with the heat wave that we've just gone through. Before the Ok so that's no connection there John I don't really know other than the possibility is that. Drainage and that to now this is on the tips of the leaves. What about the center stem if you look at a leaf you have. A center distributor of water basically and then you have an accumulation of brown on the tips of the leaves that's to me sounds like a. Something wrong with the amount of mineral that's in the soil which could be because of the stream bed and that type of thing around the area I'm not sure I really don't know a lot but you better audit out in the what if it's also to get there to be acid level that's what you're supposed to do right. Too much sulphur would do the same thing I think what I would do is knock off the sulfur. And I think that only I will speak good for it well up to a point it might be but then of course with too much salt for just the opposite of the really you know too much is too much that's all and that would be one of those Ok so for maybe once a year. The stupid way to work so I met I didn't know Ed Ok Ok Well they're all right I'll thank you for that. That's the problem Ok All right thank you for the call you take care let's go to Cheryl as a Napa Hi there Cheryl. I wanted I wanted to ask you about. My Hollyhock I've got some kind of. Like a streak in it a little black wind and I don't know what the deal is. But it doesn't make it doesn't make a whole bar Ok it takes the top layer off a belief Yeah that's a thrip t.h.r. IP. And you can show. Well just spray them with lint spent sat Oh Ok Ok I got that one Jackson Captain Jack bug brew and spin a set and all of those kind of good things and one should do the job I mean 3 per very sensitive to that spend a said so that should come right in situation now if it doesn't then there's another thing going on but I don't think that you see any little red dots on the bottom part of the lever underneath the leaf. There while that what kind of turns gray but it's like it 1st layer of that's what they do they're nasty little guys and so you want to correct them Ok Ok Thanks so much thank you you take care of Ward in San Carlos Hi. Bob this is Bob's word saying Carlos and anyway I will tell you I got this beautiful spider the eats your jacket she loves them oh great yeah she just eats it's one of those. Orange type tell Yeah the they're pretty yeah oh yes and they're gardening What do they call the garden spiders I think is what you name yeah anyways because big beautiful web been meaning to anyway to also I have another question to ask you is how are flies are they beneficial Yes Oh good are they a leaf cutter b. Or is a different totally different no the hover fly is just a little tiny thing has its if you look at it real closely it has a stripe a rear end and you know and they just they hover that's why they call them over fly and. There are some varieties of them most of the hunter flies are just little things and they hover around very pollination part of the plant and spread pollen you know that's what they do it see a lot of them this year buzzing around look really neat look at look they look like little tiny yellow jackets almost they're not that is correct yeah you've got to have that's what they do but you're in good good shape there Ward you must not have any insecticide and stuff like that you would know and also you know I never heard of any bugs one else's opinions because when I was younger my mom used to gross accumulate our backyard we never had any problem with the bugs 90 percent of the plate people don't have it but one squash bugs get into a situation they will and they the entire situation so that's what that poor guy had Yeah Ok well you have a good day Bob Hope it's a 3rd hour back. This is Bob tell him in the garden Talk Radio 560. Hey welcome back to talk radio 56. Down here in your garden let's go to Paul in the Peter's. Milpitas all Tom Ok. Anyway I have a job apply it's also called alum boy and there may be too hot and it's about 5 feet tall we've had it for about 5 years it has no. Truth coming out of it what I kind of read was supposed to have another. One next to it so it can cost. And I'm not sure Paul what other form you need. And there is a pollinator for it but I don't know all. All the. I mean I was going to look at that catalog that I have but I'm going to have to research that to figure out what kind your needs are going to have to listen to it listen next week Paul and I will have an answer to that situation. But I Tom and I mean. This no question about it if we get a starter plant of some kind that comes in a hot today then plant that into the ground or leave it in the pot for a while. Mainly what you do have a ton of you ever seen it bloom in the spring. The leaves the leaves kind of turned a different color but I've never seen any blossom things. It doesn't it does manage to get through the winters quite fine Yeah Ok my fraud here is that you gotta have blooms before you're ever going to have fruit. So I'm going to have to do some research on that and maybe there's some other things that I can suggest to you you might email me if you have a chance to Bob tandem dot Bob tandem at aol dot com and maybe I can find out the solution online but I'm going to have to do a little more research than that than just what the radio can afford right now because I just I do not have the answer to that. Ok it's you know thank you and thank you for the call and the correction on your name anyway we have some lines left open if you'd like to join us we have about 10 minutes of conversation if you'd like to join us with that there's a lot of things that you might want to be able to do in your yard right now one of course is to get ready for the bear fruit season which is coming up with out you know that will be in January Well actually the latter part of December and the 1st part of January are the best time to go to a nursery in order or get a hold of fruit but you might want to go into your local nursery and ask them what their order is going to be so that you can take advantage of fruit trees that are at their lowest possible price and by the way we did find out this morning that the . Center in some Armstrong is closed it's not in business anymore which is too bad that one of those things that we know it's been sunny side and nursery as far as I'm concerned for so long I just assume that they'll be a nursery in there forever they have a great history. Mana terribly wise and football wise and in fact the original founder of Sunnyside nursery was on the Wonder team of the University of California in 1928 or something like that so anyway that's what we do and he started that Collie he was a friend of mine for as long as he lives so you know whatever anyway why do we go to Chris in real Linda Hi there Chris good morning Bob. I've been seeing him in our area for the last few years. Some like a light caught me cushiony scale looking. Creature on open to Cactus and seen it slowly killing them here and there. And. I've got some large 015 year old specimens in the back which I was going to let go anyway because I wanted to relocate some in another spot and it got this disease this insect earlier this year and in just 6 months it's essentially killed. 8 foot don't put as to the ground while yeah that's what I said I didn't realize it was so invasive in that type of thing the cure is name oil by the way yeah I that's what I figured long term it must have been a deuced area fact I think you had a guest on a couple weeks ago talking about this creature I assume it's a scale and if you scrape it with your fingernail it produces a purple small of like dye and I'll leave you to say that that was used to you know you know yeah it was used and that's but I've never heard of it killing the plant it is I had no I just didn't think anything would kill put Yeah and I say I 1st saw it about 3 years ago. A few miles from my home where I come away to work and thought that was a bit odd never seen anything a tackle put that was the 1st I'd seen of it and now I just said mine got infected and I'm seeing almost every mature stand of a put does in our area is getting it. And it just started and I had no idea how. We already go over so I just gotta hose it off with water but I'm just wondering when I do replant just Nimoy you think is the yeah I think you're that old yeah that's the best shot after it you know I curse I think it's sort of like all the warning you're giving me because I think that this this point attacked us is a really wonderful plan it can be you know you can peel it off a needle it has Yeah I mean yeah I eat it the no pollies you know the young. Cats I mean I regularly eat those and pick one and I'm kind of a rural area and I'm surrounded. By just more and more South American people all the time which is fantastic and they are planting them as well as kind of you know you know culture say and I'm seeing there's are getting taken out too so I don't know what the vector is for this little thing if it has a flighted stage or I have no idea yeah yeah I cannot answer that but I will. All sorts of things that's why the program is this program is not static you know like we're worried about the hurricane we're worried about the hurricane we're worried about the hurricane and hurt hurricane doesn't happen dramatically then I have nothing to talk about so that says sort of the thing that I don't have a static kind of situation like that this is new to me I had no idea although I am a millionaire with the the the insect itself and used as a dye because the audience did that and natives and all of the wonderful things well I guess I'm not supposed to say Indian anymore but that I. I oh I I play ground Well it was any Indian you can say Indian my friend so. Yeah it. So beautiful color is it scaled you remember they calling it a scale or something else it is a scale yes it is a scale. Yeah it's obviously a you know a lot of scale has like one season a year where they'll do a crawling you know spreading stance this thing just apparently has crawlers and reproduces all here it is a tropical and most profit goals are many of my should say have unlimited. Methods by which they propagate and what I'm trying to say they like sex just like human beings and so that's why haven't we were there you know at one time there we go Chris Christie let you go but thank you oh. No brand new I'll check it out and I'll have an answer next week I've got a couple of things to do.
