And welcome back to coast to coast George Norry with me along with Kevin Mitnick we'll get your calls this hour goes by quickly Kevin live so when you set up your security firm How did you begin to market yourself they just come to you they just came to me I mean based I guess on my history Sure it's almost like how Let's give our becoming a pharmacist right. But. Yeah I mean I don't do any marketing today with no before and kind of the I'm right and the I'm the company. And we're now over $800.00 employees were a $1000000000.00 company we have like $20000.00 customers. You know we're doing you know we're doing extremely well because we're able to really help our clients protect their users from getting fooled by the bad guys you know because we have phishing attacks you know we're malicious e-mails that are sent you have people that call you up over the phone and there is a there's a security company called Black Hills security that found a vulnerability a couple years ago and it's a really scary where accuracy place calendar events if you're using g. Mail your G.'s week if you're using Google for your email provider they could put. Calendar events in your calendar and they could you know obviously put links there like and have something like all hands meeting you know at 9 am this morning Click here to join in and when the victim clicks there to join Well they may be joining the meeting but they're going to have the special software on their computer that they won't like so it's are actually rewarding and challenging to really help you you know help companies purge you know prevent those from happening to them and these people the scammers I mean they'll send you things like a logo of your bank and you know say hey there's a problem log in they trick you don't think oh yeah read your e-mail it might you might read something you might think the cure is you know Click here for 3 more you know when you click there to read more it's you know it. Could potentially interaction over your computer. And I got to see how many different types of what we call pretext a pretext of the story that's in the e-mail that convinces the victims the follow the instructions and you can imagine when you have a sophisticated bad actor and they go do some research on your company about the public on that you know on the Internet what they call open fortune telling and for short so the bad actors do a lot of sense on the company a lot of research on the people the easiest way to research the people that work for companies or these Linked In which is what you know obviously the right has to social network for business and then. What the bad actors do is they create stories like pretending to be from a bender pre-training to be another employee they might send the militias. Email you know after having initial communication 3 or 4 times and then the 4th e-mail that's the malicious e-mail and any time there's another vent Pietschmann issues like Donald Trump you know you get an e-mail here's the secret you know here's the secret for a Ukrainian phone call click your to listen and they'll use current events for example sheet to do this you know you know Edward Snowden recently came out and said when he was looking all through the n.s.a. Classified data stores there's no you have photos and I imagine maybe somebody on your show would say you know well if you don't it is wrong here's the actual proof that you know you get the idea you know it's exactly the tracking it's interesting because of sociology. The best way to get compliance is to frame the request where somebody is going to one point losing something losing access losing money use it losing image and if the fraudster constraining the e-mail in that way it's more likely the victim of you know click or cooperate or open up the attachment or follow whatever instructions are in the mail and nowadays they have a thing called business e-mail compromise so the fraudsters could care less about breaking into the company's computer systems they just want to steal money so they do the research that I discussed a moment ago and they look for people in the company that are authorized to send wires. And then what they'll do they send them invoices and stuff don't thing you know they'll basically send an e-mail to that person pretending to be the c.f.o. Or the c.e.o. Of the company and this is what I mean this is they won't fight 1000000000 dollar fraud that's going on and getting the number of companies and trick that individual into finding a bank wire and with 80 all the time oh I can't I'm so if you if you if you're interested in this you know you can google Pacific you know compromise or b. C. For short it's happening all the time so now even if the bad guys don't even have to break in your computer they can trick somebody and in the company if you don't have good processes and controls in place just to wire the money unbelievably what about global calls Kevin what do you know about town where annoying I get them all the time I get telemarketers I even install them after they had in the Apple App Store it didn't really help that much Basically I just keep blocking a mistake and I didn't block them. As well you know what I was and you know when I was in school as a kid you know the most coveted piece of information and it wasn't like I needed it to when using with it or other students was always getting like a fake i.d. So if you could if you knew the secret to get a fake id you know you were considered cool but you know let's change that a little bit and think about today. You don't get all these data breaches that happen you know tons of companies are compromised you know pretty much on a on a weekly basis so there are websites not on the dark web but on the surface web that you could actually go to and you could search through those data breaches for people afterwards that they've used before at like at Adobe and a link and then we were you know. Thousands of flights have been compromised in the past and what companies have done is they've aggregated all this data that contains . People intervenes and passwords and you know addresses and addresses they've used in the past and you could basically search for this information it's almost like back in junior high and getting the fake id of actually having that information to be able to uncover what passwords people use and not only that you know people if they're changing their passwords Well typically use the same password pattern right so sakit says so they don't forget it right and I know they'll always have the same root password with a root you know the root word you don't have a number after it and a birthday they might have their initial their birth date that sort of thing and there's a fight out there and I pay you know 170 bucks for every 3 months and I use the for security testing but people should consider going to the site to see if their own passwords show up and that should be the indicator that people should use a password manager or not choose their passwords you know them self because it's a really bad idea and the industry is actually going away from passwords there's a company out there called True some of it's actually developing a technology where you use your mobile phone to prove who you are you don't even get you the password and you know and it's you know in the early adoption stages but the fight is called We believe in Photo dot com That's like getting the fake id so to speak back to you know the school days and what that's really good info dot com I think I really suggest you put your name in it put your e-mail address and see if your passwords come up and if your passwords come up you know change you'll be needing it step should be changing them and not using the same pattern that's amazing Let's go to the phones let's go to Mike in Denver Colorado do you think started the Michael go ahead. Good evening George thank you so much for taking my call the cat and I'm currently grateful. Dead tonight a couple questions for you and I want to get your take on 1st of which he recently there was a petition Nefertiti cyber criminal Ross Albrecht to President Trump g.p.s. We. Think that his sentence of essentially life in prison was a justified one second of all I wanted to get your take on the movie Live Free or Die Hard in that movie it talked about a fire scene which is a term describing a 3 stage cordoning attack on e country Transportation told me cations financial utility system still hacking you think this concept is a possibility in real life and how much of that movie do you think which based off of and taking my call I thank you Mike let's start with either one of those for sure Obreht that were earlier in the show George mentioned if I called Silk Road and it was a fight that you know was actually created by rock you know to you know the drug deal. And he was fighting son for life imprisonment without parole I think if you are I think the sentence for where were you. To set an example and put a young guy away for the rest of life without the possibility of ever walking out of prison. For setting up a Web site you know to you know engage in drug dealing I think it is hard there are likely people with other opinions I think he deserves a life I think. You know you have murderers and rapists and other you know criminals but there's a clique or people that get less time as far as the question about the fire sale get it oh tension really happening go live that movie by the way that Bruce Well it's pretty I was actually interviewed in the u.k. Version 5 on the d.v.d. Set of course all these movies are fictionalized and what you see in motion pictures you can really believe that will happen in real life most of the time and with that said it's interesting because my book goes to the wires a very well known show where under purchased the rights to actually do the movie based on that book I'm hoping in about one to 2 years they'll be absolutely you know I don't know if I'll be called Ghost in the wires but it will be basically my life story hopefully told and in a good and productive way I'm going to have a t.v. Producer contact the 2 cats because you might be interested in the weekly series. Ok I mean I sold my rights so basically they are probably precluded from doing anything but the guy who actually purchased that I can't mention it on the air. Is . Somebody that I think if you up and have to job in the ferry but you can see you can still work on something though could you if it's not based on you back like Ok I have to be Picture life I believe absolutely something with what's been going on in the world of packing in it continues is big brother listening in on OSs Yeah. I mean I think the clear evidence about was in the Snowden revelations back in 2013 share at least the bad data meaning that Alice is calling Bob and what the how many times a day they call each other and you know how long they talk on the phone. You know meditate and there's absolutely no doubt it is. Obtained by you know not tional Security Agency and probably other intelligence agencies in storage in search. But I believe even if you could post from one country go to the content of calls. You have to think about this they're not going to Teligent agency is not going to intercept the call and store the voice you know the call you know recording of the call what they'll do is they'll do voice to text in-store the transcript of the call and I imagine you're storing text from a dating could actually start back to national security agency opened up a huge data center in Utah. You know it and I believe the last couple years. Or the stuff right the story the data painfully the waiting if you want to protect your communications download an app called Signal id and how. Did you know mind you anything could be compromised by the way why is it is a free app separate out now how do they make money by the way and free apps. Maybe advertising is behind that's the guy name is. The name he goes by the moxie marlinspike really intelligent security Moxie Berlin spike you have marlinspike of course it's a fake name but he's someone that you know off beat and beyond developing football and making it available for the public know what this is not me not for money but to you know he was on a mission to help people protect the secrecy of their communication Thankfully what . Purchased a license to use the technology he developed I'm certain that's the rumor on the street. But what the app does how it works is it uses what they call and in corruption so the keys are actually stored on your phone on each party is the beis din Intelligence Agency has the capability to actually compromise people so biased so you don't think that the National Security Agency or an intelligence agency in a nation state can't monitor your communications if you're using signal because if you're targeted they both certainly can but if you're trying to protect your communications from a lawyer you might want to subpoena information because of a divorce or libraries or protect yourself against fraudsters or you're having business communications about stock sales and the sort of thing signal is the best way to go and it's very interesting take Let's go now to Joel in Long Island New York a Joseph go ahead yeah Kevin what do you want to the china stuff for example if you do cross-country hacking what the language barrier at the end issue I mean if you're what I. Want to see him out from all angles he wouldn't understand it and I don't know I mean all the operatives that are used in other countries are in English you know not normally and it's the same so just because. You're dealing with different country it's really a minor difference. Yes only to the site they're being disassociated I mean you started this Kevin when he was 17 it's the idea that say someone to do it may just take it had to Hoover Dam and then it still will of course and then so when he had a turkey sandwich and disassociate themselves because I didn't do what the computer did it he I mean that's the hardest part when there are computer crimes as what they call attribution trying to identify and be. The threat actor behind the act and it's really difficult these days if you're dealing with a simplistic a good person now a few months ago there was this guy who lived in Seattle that decided he was going to hack in the capital one or you know to fight the bank and thank credit card company. And they got credit cards as well and Capital One used to Amazon to host all the earth services you know Amazon the cloud service and this guy worked at Amazon before and he found some flaws he was able to exploit it was able to steal a centrally. Gigabytes of quote a capital one. You know customer data and then he actually bragged about it. On the tool called flack which is like a messaging tool that was in the public channel and then of course he was arrested for doing so but it happens all the time and you get people out there that want to prove a point and they hack into things even major banks and it's not too difficult unfortunately it could be a simple misconfiguration that capital had a couple one you know didn't know about that was you know misused by this individual to gain access to their data how much for big companies are they spending and. I don't know the amount they're counting on I keep or say but I t. Security. Really depends depends on the country's security it's really like risk management it's almost like our insurance how much are you willing to spend but you know how to protect yourself against damage to your vehicle or liability from hurting somebody else yeah you know that's the same type of situation as how much of a company willing to spend to mitigate. They're going to suffer a security incident and it could you know not only hurt their bottom line through festive information or money but actually hurt their image so then the company have to decide how much they're going to budget to solve that problem all right go ahead campfire i-t. Budget but we're going to come back in a moment take final phone calls Joe out there 1st time caller and he's Kansas you'll be up next get Daily Show Updates right to your inbox for free with the coast newsletter sign up today and coast to coast. Do you still think that the way things are going that the global elite still want to dominate the planet and that they might succeed Well I think they didn't dominate the place for a long time until 76 because the founding fathers decided to call a new form of government one that was based on wrong that were eternal right. And welcome back to coast to coast Kevin Mitnick with us we'll get your calls as well Kevin our company has been getting notices that Windows 7 will no longer be supported they're pushing Windows 10 and what is that all mean maybe better upgrade . I mean what it means for the end of life. Basically Microsoft will stop issuing. To fix problems like security vulnerability haha when it hits a certain date in 2020 and you need to really consider upgrading your operating system I know that companies prefer not to because the cough money they have to you know purchase licenses but everybody should because of the security against men in the newer operating systems that fix problems of the open up old operating systems is just a way delta force you to buy new things so they can increase your sales force very significant or when they force you to buy stuff still they yank resales Yeah I mean . About so let me I mean. If they go end of life and they're no longer supporting the product then obviously you're going to have to upgrade but when they're 10 that's been out for quite some time I think what 2014 or even earlier now I'm sure they'll be another one pretty soon yeah and so you think more about Apple here so I I I prefer to buy MacBook Pro. Now that you have this game of these adapters you know so to plug anything into a mac book pro the newer ones you have to use us p.c. Connectors. Which means that you have to buy all these adapters when you want to plug it into your Mac. . Apple has created the situation where now when you buy their new equipment you have to now buy adapters you know so obvious companies Microsoft or Apple or restrain to figure what you know figure ways out to increase their bottom line that's that's definitely a given Let's go to the phones now Joe and he's Kansas 1st time Caller Hi Joseph go ahead tell us hello george. Well it's my birthday just the great birthday present all happy birthday my friend. Questions I might be a little. Bit of a 4th time if I'm going to be 80 I don't know if your g.p.s. . But if you do you well I mean. Systems people what hack that was. An actor can back in the day that little extension in order to spread it when you were at least equal you could. Just in a company and then leave all the other back and then it sort of they found then you go to another one and the other question of course or to future of your I mean if you're rich or not before your time and you were talking about it like well you could blow a frequency into an iphone you know. But I mean that was a out a quick look at. You when you got a call this before your time or. Well. I'm very familiar with what you're talking about what happened when I used what's in boards back in the day in the 1980 s. And I'm very familiar with you know voicemail box of vulnerabilities. Did I ever Akon to a voicemail box leave messages no fact and we had in the phone phreaking days you know which was kind of the intermediate predecessor of hacking. We had things called the program in and off Angelus if you'd create a call a prefix. And then dial 1118 then you'd have another party dial 1119 you'd be magically join together so people used to use easily Paramus to communicate not bother backing voicemail boxes or they'd use like Conference lines and people it's not conference lines and many people would call in and that sort of thing. On your 2nd or your 2nd question about the boxes about the marches boxes think blue box you know those and they get what they call monthly frequency times the funny thing George is Steve Jobs had a sense of humor so he actually had to put up blue box in the App Store at Apple because how Apple computer started a lot of people don't know this is he watching that read this article in the 1971 edition of us Wired magazine called The Secrets of low Bluebox and not only could you break free from call for you can call restricted numbers and it was a prankster and you like like calling the Pope and doing things like this for my job was kind of like Ok we monetize this so just so was a build a box of jobs and sell them on to sell them on Berkeley's campus so students could make free from calls from the money they need from the adventure. They were able to buy the components to build the 1st couple one so Apple Computer and how cool are to phone phreaking did you write a book which was knack nobody did buy forward on the wire if they don't trade with one art of invisibility kind enough to do that now back to his question the Jones question about the voicemail box that people would hack into it and businesses what kind of message do you believe I am a hacker I just act in your voice system. What did they do well I actually recently enough to take a to take enough to get a case with a Canadian company and their voice mail system for being an actor and they were getting these like long distance charges for calling India and it turned out that people would call it in you know yeah like the pin for people points now like 1234 right there extension or 11112222 you get the idea you know guessing people's voice mailbox can and in this particular system. But the company used once again back to for some of these voicemail box you could actually create a forwarding number so if you didn't answer your phone. And it went ahead rather than going to your voicemail it actually transferred the call to a number that you doesn't need so these fraudsters what exactly voicemail boxes for the number are put the number to fortitude to intervene and then they call them the phone number of a local number in Canada and you know essentially it makes 3 phone calls and with the fraud the company so he's put your tell 1st on the flight down the vulnerability In short tell what they were exploiting and they fixed it so. That's what they could do nowadays but I don't know if they did like leaving the training somebody talking reading I don't know if that's so interesting let's go to the Alexandria Louisiana our dear friend Cornelius is with us some older Thanks for holding Cornelius. George I hope to talk with Joey I think you some with Dr Morgan So it was a newspaper article in our papers so I said. My god question for cabin it was Issue 0 on c.b.s. Called Personal Gantry and I want to know it bad show was my will pretty much after you and I was in computer science at Louisiana Tech of course our greatest guy would. The mailman Malone and branch all came from Louisiana Tech and rust in Louisiana but I started out of computer science but I didn't stay in it but I the computer room it was 247 they had those old punch cards back b.n. Dollar of card support all yeah I remember about yeah but anyway I wanted to know like you did with your store your name person of interest on c.b.s. I know I was on a balcony with a reason I don't really watch that much television but be honest with you but they had an episode where they mention by name and one of the episodes if somebody had told me about it I don't I don't not really familiar with the t.v. Show to really answer your question but one of my favorite shows where the main character is Acker that I love to watch in the last season it's called Mr Robot So if you're interested in the Xian. You know hacking and you want to watch a really good t.v. Show highly recommend Mr Robot assuming you're not losing money in a bank account stuff how do you know your computer's been hit that's really difficult I mean you kind of have to be an expert I mean I got from the fines that we you know years ago I went to Aerosmith dot com to buy few tickets and all of a sudden all these things started popping up on my computer so what happened back in those days a somebody got some hacked into Aerosmith website and put some malware I downloaded onto this you know of course Aerosmith had no idea it was a their site was active deployed and everything start popping up I had all these like you know pads open up like 30 of them at a time only mediately I knew something was wrong to reload my computer and they hacked the hacker and yeah yeah well you know it's a pain I had to reload you know media we had to reload my system from the last good backup but. Yeah in a lot of cases nowadays you can delete. Compromised and you'll never know. And that's the unfortunate thing is you can't really depend on anti-piracy software these days because the bad actors have figured out how to develop malware malicious software that bypasses a lot of the products that are out in the market so what I do myself is every 6 months I buy a new computer I know that you know it's expensive. And what I do is reload it from scratch and I start from scratch every 6 months so that way if my computer's ever compromised I start fresh and that's what I personally do and a lot of other security controls like I used virtual machines so there's a product called v.m. Where you can create a virtual computer on your desktop and use that most of the time and not my main computer so if I were to get infected with malware because the security software that i use of and good enough if it isn't good enough which we could be anything could be hacked. Then my virtual machine gets compromised not my main computer so that's now another option that people could do it you know Google v.m. Ware they have it for mac they have it for Windows and if you need a higher level of security you know use virtualization to do it let's go to Blair and shit on Arizona hi Blair go ahead thank you George a test idea was a coast to coast twister you Mr know it 1st play as Mr Mitnik my question this summer during access t.v. Think interview Dan Ackroyd said he's currently writing another Ghostbusters screenplay with ritual cast members as Trail Mary in mind George which you consider doing the coast Ackroyd interview and then say maybe insiders could call in and suggest you include a film to Ghost to go straight you know shell. Within the new Ghostbusters. He's been on the program before but sure we dial we consider putting him on he's a good guy would be great well Mr Mitnik when George interviewed at Ames recently on post game stated he states away from smart phone usage and still uses that flip phone that allows the battery to be removed for privacy and that's something you can't get with smartphones in the future but I think when you low tech flip phone usage what you see it apes out there to well I do see to it you know you going back to the older technology like the old Nokia phones you will be reduced but the good terminology in our world is called the attack surface so it's definitely reduced in using modern things modern day smartphones but. You have to think about could a threat actor depending on their skill set actually compromised the mobile operator they you're using to gain access to maybe the contents of your culture again or you can call them if you catch or if you're using t.f.m. Which is a type of technology he she you know sitting in front of your house which people could build these troops are relatively cheap and basically when your handset when you think it's connecting to 18000 feet mobile or Herbalife and it's really connecting to the to the bad guys a device in your phone thinks it's the mobile operator but it isn't and could be use that to gain access to your the content of your communications so there's. That risk even if you're using the older technology. Like an old Nokia phone that you know that you have some but there's a few things you have I kind of miss my little Motorola flip phone I mean the initial small you just put it there right in your pocket and there you go. Oh yeah I mean I'm well I mean I'm on my favorite times of the. Micro chalk he'd be all trust now you know the flip phone flea that did the days of the Star Trek communicator now back in the 1990 s. I mean that was that was the thing to ask and you know nowadays you know if you have the fam songwriting I thought. We have time for maybe one more quick call let's go to Greedo and Cameron Park California hi Guido go ahead Char how you jump to that great you know is it a quick well. Yeah unfortunately we're at the top of the hour oh Ok Ok because you know I do you know we have some history I mean you know you and I met back at the colonel more conventional right Anything years ago with long time ago. The member that I sure do I remember the name. Ok so you know I've always assumed that somebody is listening to everything I'm talking about you know ever since the fifty's or sixty's and Kevin you know he could have for like a freight every day you know crank out of now you're talking about it every day oh yeah yeah. Basically get back in the 70s we did like you know somebody had a float I think it into the 800 up 1st to go make phone calls for free so that's going to say you got your start right now I wasn't really interested in doing a phone call for free I mean how I got off started a message here you know like the price is magic and when I was a young kid I was happy with magic and I met this kid in high school who could do magic with the telephone and he showed me all these tricks you could do and I was a prankster so one of the 1st acts that I've done you know the phone phreak or what changed my friend from phone to a payphone so whenever his parents tried to make a call it would say please deposit 25 cents. You're one of a card Kevin let's keep in touch my friend you're one of the good guys as well Kevin Mitnick up next investigative reporter Cheryl Jones with a couple fascinating programs Coast insiders the new version of the coast to coast am amp is now available for i Phone and now Android phone above Listen Live undermanned anywhere anytime go to coast to coast am dot com and download it today .
