Michael Straczynski who is responsible for the creation of Babylon 5 wrote the story for the movie version of World War z wrote the screenplay for Changeling science fiction comic books I mean the guy is an amazing writer. It's if you know his whole story it's amazing he didn't end up in the Manson family . We'll get a line for you for open lines so let me clear some out by starting with Dave in Sacramento and coast to coast am Dave. And I do and it's a pleasure to meet you have been wanting to talk to you since you had Adam go rightly on the on the line a few years ago Sure let's kill. You I also want to commend Miss Lake for you know 14 is a victim of a cult and you know it's pretty sad. I wanted to tell you a story that happened to me I'm 48 now. In Hawaii and it's a question I have for many people involved either writers or people involved in the cult I have question about but tell your story I was about 17 get picked up by my dad in Hawaii and he was driving and the passenger happened to be a good friend and police officer in the state of Hawaii and he was the head of the id. For one of the islands. And we were having a conversation just sitting back I was unnecessarily conversation he was talking my dad. But he kind of looked over and said Hey you see that guy and my dad said yeah and he said well that guy's a Charles Manson follower. Goes Come on what do you mean he goes well we got contacted by by l.a. That they're in Hawaii. What years is probably between 87 and 88 I was in high school I was definitely not a sophomore junior senior Thank you. And so I thought I looked over and recognized somebody who used to walk around our school and back in those days and why I mean even today. You know you could walk on campus but or I was kind of taken back by that and I understood that he meant there were more than one in Hawaii and it's a peculiar story it's something that stuck with me for a long time I'm in law enforcement myself and question I always have is people talk about the sixty's or seventy's eighty's and ninety's and Manson being in jail they never talk about the after effect after Spahn Ranch in the trial with. Go see and Manson. And it's a question I think it's important is how far does a Manson family go you know I'm saying at 17 and Ellie had the wherewithal to call my wife and let him know that they were followers and I don't ever know I think that they were dangerous or they were doing things wrong but it just kind of kind of peculiar and I wanted to share that story yet the rest of the world let me refer let me reflect on that. Out of ignorance for that particular situation but familiarity with another that parallels and I would say I wonder whether when the comment was made that he wasn't pointing out somebody who was what we would call say approach 0 family member but what would be termed a do to row. Manson follower so Manson while he's in prison picks up a whole new following and they are not people who had experienced Him personally right like Diane lake in the people that were around and that was actually a relatively small group that lived there or and there were some that came and went and Diane talks about in the book there might be somebody who comes for 2 weeks and then sneaks up the Milenko So this is not for me and there were of course there were many victims of Manson that we'll never know how many people were killed but it would still be a relatively contained number but the reaction to his fame and to the book it's a lot like what happens with a lot of other serial or spree or mass killers where they develop a cult following and I wonder whether that's what he's referring to is somebody who had become a dude a secondary cult follower to Manson based on his popularity as a as a as a as a media figure as a cultural icon What do you think well yeah I agree with you I wasn't that at all that was 17 and you know about Charles Manson this is the eighty's and you know you very well could be right because. I never got in on the individual involved that was at a Sandy is away and so will never know how involved that was. Also if it was internist a geisha or something. The police department you never would have anyway well they're just a part of it too just to make the point there weren't that many guys. That's the thing of when it is I mean and most of them it can be accounted for so maybe it was one of the guys who came and went in the group but he you know Bobby Beausoleil gets murdered. You know tax hit men I mean it's a it's a short list of guys who were involved it could have been one of the ranch hands maybe because those were a bunch of guys who were kind of anonymous a little bit but yeah that's a really interesting question and I would say because I know people that were involved in the. I don't agree with them but I know I knew one personally that was involved in the Gacy cult in the John Wayne Gacy colt and they considered him a kind of guru behind prison and they found ways to get messages from him and to him and it was all very sick how how far does he seem like you know more. That would be a question for him this week is. This a good friend because he was with the prosecution Yeah she was very protective that's actually in the book. And and there was obviously a big backlash toward her and then and then she gets married she doesn't go by lake anymore obviously she's married she has kids she moves into a non amenity I was reading on line about her a little bit after I'd finished the book and I just went back into sort of see what people say it's really compelling to think even with these Manson family wikis you know these sites dedicated to all aspects of Manson mania or whatever how much of that they get wrong about Diane lake and the book has already been out for 2 years and they still don't correct things that they say about her that are completely in error so maybe there's not as many people involved period and nobody really cares. That's always possible would that be nice but really interesting story appreciate that Dave and so what do you now you are you work in law enforcement you say I do I want to say where or. Yet you keep us safe take a day prescience but east of the Rockies John is in Iowa coast to coast am for open lines yeah I'm in my I'm in my late fifty's and I was a kid when all this happened and I know where I was and I remember how terrifying it was and Charles Manson that was just you know it's had this fearful mystical terror it really had a residual effect for a lot of years and I thought about it and it's sort of come to terms with it over over these years now and what's happening. We view this and I really appreciate you guys you covering this I still feel it's tragic tragic and might I still feel the compassion for for guests tonight but evil for me evil like this sort of thing whether it's $911.00 mass murders school shootings genocide overseas or just evil in general it's kind of taken on a more of a sort of a lackluster tone and I mean I would almost say that evil itself as I process is where the years evil is more dull it's more boring it's more ugly what was fascinating in the past has really kind of given way toward I see I see what it's what it did to me back then in the sixty's and I do I remember where I was and I remember the story but you evil is less fascinating and and good is goodness and light is more fascinating and so I agree with that that's a good point it's more powerful it's more good is more even more magnetizing then the evil of that time and so anyway diminishing point and let's pull it apart a little bit so 1st of all we're in Iowa are you. I'm in north central Iowa but I'm I was in central Iowa when I was growing up and I used to live in a while like that so. I. I think one thing we have to say for people our age is we were highly influenced by that turn of events when up until that point up until the Manson family remember hippies were all love and peace and everybody was getting along or getting stoned and dropping out whatever the dark side the hippie killer cult that was what that's part of what seemed so unique about that kind of evil because up until that point is it it was always very just it was dirty you know they were 8 eating leftovers from people's plates when they'd walk away from restaurants in there was a lot of that but there wasn't this sense of oh my god they could be killed worse and I think that's part of that what draws that contrast to me and it's easy for to forget it for people who weren't around that time that that that was part of the explosion of why this seems so bizarre is it just up until that moment hippies seemed so harmless Well my dad was a schoolteacher that time and the students were older and we were a little nearer Namrud with the whole idea of freedom and it's funny because I think I'm a libertarian conservative now and I really still love the idea of freedom and there's so much about the hippies that you know I still admire and I feel like but yeah freedom can actually be used to do something good or something evil and everything in between so I I don't throw out all the baby with the bathwater because there's something I like about freedom and yeah there's was responsibility really gives meaning to freedom and evil I just kind of I was it doesn't scare me as. Much I suppose I'm sure but horrifying but you're right to have lived in that time know that the longer you live I think the greater lessons you learn yeah insulin thank you very much for having her on and God bless or may you know yeah lesser and she is hers and one of the thought of thanks for calling the and do it after you hang up but we're all post Watergate babies you know and that was another thing we that if you think about that whole era of the 70s post Watergate post Madsen It was Who do you trust and so in that sense maybe to that diminishes that that the impact of evil because I mean I think I grew up in a very suspicious generation it's sort of like how millennial are so impacted by 911. And they've never known a time without the Internet and these are 2 of the forces that shape a millennial outlook that says different from any generation that came before it now there's a generation behind the millennial and they're shaped by something else then every generation will have those forces so. Compelling Thanks for the point John was good Let me grab. Gordon in Plant City Florida on a wild card line on Coast to Coast garden Well thanks for taking my call you and talking about bizarre I live in Lakeland Florida and the one story I used to live in Lakeland Florida in Plant City now I just moved over on the death of my father in the place there are more credit to you going you can google the Lakeland Florida please press and they've been blocking telephones and they claim that they were not blocking them for 911 which of course it would be illegal anyhow but if you google Lakeland Florida police call blocking you can you can find out they were in a little bit of coverage but the big places are afraid to cover it and I emailed Tommy and George more definitive proof of this I posted on not what's not but I'm not going to give it a. Because I don't have permission but I gave my vow before God that I would break the story with you guys now you might wonder why the police were blocking people call I mean that's bizarre it's illegal you could put lives in danger in there and we found out later that day they said oh we're not blocking on $11.00 just regular calls of of course it's a due process issue because they block a call without going through a court process and secondly didn't read recess you you can't read rescue government turned its labs in danger it's been documented with the documentation from the the phone company there were witnesses that were interviewed I have a camcorder not aimed at some telephones and I would love to share with you never get permission where you and the the camcorder the telephones and this phone cannot call this one can call. It hang it hang it hanging hang it take a breath man. I did what you told me to do. And I I searched just for what you told me to search and so far the only thing that comes up I think is your website. So I don't see what's the other who else covered this in the news so you can help me out with what I say when I say either I mean either you to me as a well as a regular me or. So you're the one covering this you're the only one to come around you to me and I've had a regular website Ok we'll pause for a 2nd we wait but you know hang on no not going to do this where you just keep on talking as fast as you can talk I'm asking a question so I don't see any evidence of this accusation and it's important to me that we not falsely accuse somebody I have that right to demand that if we're going to talk about an entity like the Lakeland Police Department that there's got to be some proof of what you're talking about and you say other go Google it nothing comes up so and the only thing that you're saying comes up it's coming up through you so. Let me just I will ask you why. What is it that happened to you and what are you so mad about well what happened was I was trying to report some perjury the police wrote something in a report they claimed the dispatcher told me to stay out of this area didn't happen they got upset about it and the internal affair started getting real irate Well I want to talk to the police chief when I call it I want to talk to the police chief and the Specter said no you have to talk to internal affairs and I said I don't feel comfortable talking to them they would likely view this is as harassing phone calls Now granted that's not a justification to block the phone but I'm saying I didn't want to talk to him but she said to so that she transfer me to them and I left a message about my concerns and I didn't make any resting phone calls they were going to we're going to pause again for a 2nd so this is basically a personal beef you're having with the Lakeland Police Department Well it happened other people my father if you listen to the interview you found the web site you listen to the interview that my father and several several countered the same thing all right well then I'll pause and I'll do that I can't do it now so we'll just say thank you for now and I will at some point I'll do that in my memory I thought I did this before. Maybe was another caller but I I'm having kind of a flashback to something I did once one other time. And I just think it's important that we be fair and that you not drag us into some thing just because we picked up the phone that suddenly we're responsible for the good name of the Lakeland Police Department if they haven't in fact done this thing which you're saying they do all the time so we'll leave it there and whether or not there's any documentation or damning proof as you might suggest fair enough so I will list it after I get off the air but that's it. Will be the only chance. Mary is in New Jersey you know we're out there that's good yeah. Sorry about that right so that's will pick it up Marion New Jersey up next it doesn't as you can tell open lines takes us in all sorts of different directions so we'll find out which direction you want to go coming up in just a minute and you could be on this or anything else and if as we mentioned earlier if you go to coast to coast am dot com not too late make sure you reserve a seat for the coming up on August 27th with George and Tom down highs are going to be a big night sorry Big afternoon it's a luncheon and you find out more at coast to coast am dot com. Rush Limbaugh program is monumental Monday morning at 9 hour talk 967 and I am 1400 . Becoming Superman on Saturday night coast to coast am becoming your turn Mary on a wild card line in New Jersey on coast to coast for open lines Mary well how are you doing. When they ask you your thoughts on the 1st 7 days of creation. I have my thoughts on it what's your favorite your thoughts they want to go 1st which ones your favorite. Ok so I mean they have like the big bag and they have the 4500000000 and then they have the Bible Verse 6 days everything was created and then they tell the genealogy from that I'm on they they estimate they're 6 or 7 years 1000 years but I have totally different thoughts on that I think the 1st 6 days are correct and when it comes to Day 7 he doubles back and he starts talking about basically about this for the generations before the trees were put in there so I think it's like when Christ returns nobody knows the time only the Father and I think it's the same and in the creation story nobody actually knows the tonics at the father how long it actually took but how long would it take to plant trees all over the earth I think that's an extra time span and then he plans to Garden of Eden how long does that take Glenn he creates not creates he takes Adam out of the dust and Reason to him he becomes a living person and he puts him in the garden and trains him and talks to him and walks with him and teaches him to be the caretaker and then the animals he names and all I think that's for the extra time this but God only knows how long it is so you have a as you point like I think numbers are always figurative and in the in the Bible. I think that we know from. Biblical criticism would tell you that using the. Numbers particular particularly numbers but also other languages well other idiomatic expressions from Hebrew is I don't think they these numbers were ever intended to be taken so literally ever and in the that the reason I say that is it's not even. There was no there it was it's not it doesn't mean that it didn't happen it doesn't mean that it just meant that when we use numbers in the Bible there's really much more symbolic and we have evidence of that they were not intended to be taken literally in so many corollary documents in Hebrew tradition that it seems a little silly we get caught up in wondering whether it was exactly this day or this exactly this well I really think it was a 6 days but you know what I think when he got back and tells us you know he didn't plant the trees I think nothing was in motion it's like a big master plan it's still created he knows it's created and it's had like I'm talking about him and what it's created in this that's a big master plan everything in the earth it's like one big room it's not certain motion until he plants all the trees and God only knows how long it takes and then he starts with that in the garden I takes a long time name all the animals and all so I think that's right but hairs on different things I think it is the 6th day but it's not certain motion and so all the trees are present and then are what I look at I mean I understand your opinion and that's cool and I understand why you stick to it that's totally fair I'm just telling you what in the big you believe in the Big Bang. I don't I can't I can't believe in anything I mean I can't believe that I have no imperial proof of anything it the I know that the Bible wasn't intended to be a book of science so I'm inclined to go with science on science and I and I I mean I love the Bible I work with the Bible right now in fact I'm finishing a manuscript that's due in. Unfortunately but 12 days which is an examination of the Exodus story for a publisher so I mean I'm I love the exegetical work I love to look at it in the Hebrew and I've been comparing the texts of the Hebrew texts with the with the Qur'an and it's interesting to see the difference in those 2 narratives 2 So again I just look at numbers differently and I wish I could say I believe and I don't believe we're talking about 624 hours periods you know I do if I heard the preacher on the radio the other day I do believe in it and that's fair enough but I'm different and I think it was not that notion and so all the trees and all the vegetation with my on it then he said to the nation Ok there are fish and I birds in the air and then it takes time to get on and I want to get out and. Yeah you know I understand your opinion I got it the 1st time I just think I just will look very differently at whether that was ever intended to mean 24 hours the Hebrew doesn't really support a 24 hour day cycle when we talk about it but thank you for your thoughts on that let me go to Michael on a wild card line in Greensboro North Carolina coast to coast Michael Oh hey what's up man how you how you doing good we're going take us good 1st of all I want to ask you I know you had the dinner when I grew up in Atlanta what part of Atlanta did you live in because I used to have a house in Tucker that my parents grew up in that. I took or I was in midtown Atlanta I was just actually off just off between Peachtree and Piedmont in the Ensley Park neighborhood Oh that's very nice I know the insulin mall very well and then. You know that earlier Monroe drive. Right right by Piedmont Park yeah oh yeah that's cool yeah Ponson Avenue had a couple friends used to live off there still there are no good that here yeah Infact I had just gone down there like last September and I had been down there in over 18 years so it was kind of a strange feeling and been down there in so long especially since I grew up down there changed a lot Yeah so where are you going with this. Yeah I wanted to talk about the importance of like fresh air and you know basically you know getting some cool. Supposedly clean air I had years ago I unfortunately had to move into an airtight building where you couldn't open up the well will still and somebody actually said to me Well what do you need fresh air for like it was some sort of a river is. An actual necessity and you know somebody else said Well you know no big deal just walk outside get outside if you need some air but. You know I mean that was really a challenge for me because I always try to have the window open as much as possible even to the AC or heat on. You know and I just wanted to basically talk about you know even though the air is somewhat polluted it's still better than nothing because I noticed if I had the windows closed for too long I start feeling very stifled air and so forced I'll do you one better not only do I love to have windows open I drive a convertible even when it's totally unsensible to have the top down. So I'll have it right up to Lake. 2nd we could use anywhere or something I love fresh air nothing better so I'm with you 100 percent. Yeah me too I mean you know I'll has a you know even if it's called Out with the heat on I'll have the window cracked a little bit even with the air on and everything. And so I mean you know I mean this air you know we've certainly polluted the air there's no doubt about it but it's still better than nothing and I don't know how some people could just stay indoors 247 I don't think that's very healthy mentally or physically and you're in Greensboro so you're up there in pine country right I mean you've got some great forests and trees and soak that all up we should everybody everybody should be as lucky Thanks Michael let's go to another Michael 1st time caller line this Michael's in Miami on coast to coast am Michael. I thought I was I don't remember the 1st call I got the wrong number here. All right well you're knocking on your way Ok yeah when you're on your high. I missed the music shows and won this memorable was the one about the Wrecking Crew thank you yeah I'd love to. Have an idea for a future show with John Lear the. Aviator he was the private pilot for the birds back when they were flying high in the sixty's I thought maybe you could have on him with Roger when who was the leader of birds and also a key figure in you know the development of folk rock and he also legend you know well you know I'm cool with a grin I wonder. I wonder whether yet we're would be available for something like that that make an interesting. Portraying on a member of the guy also as the show was a little Stevie because he did a show to watch and that's going to one of the few shows I know of on radio that could somehow approach coast to coast as something very very small McCrary Home Companion he really is a hell of a guy that Stephenie all kinds of things to talk about is how Culkin story I'm sure the Nile and exacting not to mention that to a good actor. Very good actors I haven't seen the ones on recently but I really like them on Sopranos so. On that one I liked I liked his solo album I had I have his solo. Yeah he has he put out a at least one in the eighties and I remember it well I liked it well but I thought from an atomic bomb that was a great dinner he puts on all the show he's a good performer I saw a saw the boss about 5 years ago and it was or 6 years ago was a great show Thanks Michael presented a really good suggestions east of the Rockies bill isn't Hastings Florida coast to coast bill I had doing great we're going to guess Yeah well the 1st thing is I actually called in with an anecdote pertaining to the to the Charles Manson can tell me what I was in college years ago if it's the norm or it's in deep in Wisconsin now Vincent Bugliosi came there to talk about his book and I had a chance to talk to him and that they said they had during the Manson trial there was one incident during the trip where Charles Manson given the deadly steer and his watch stopped but he said that he. Knew where he was working again and yeah I've been to 2nd time you would have been nervous I heard that story I tire remember the story of courage. And then I heard you so much destruction in Islam in the Bible in all the Act I'm a person who believes in evolution but. There's one question then I'd like to ask for the fun of it I like to ask people who believe in the literal Genesis version of creation and when I ask him is can I hold something in my hand if it doesn't exist. And they see course not so I say well when I'm moving in my hand is the skull of any man now do you explain why Yeah I. Think well you know this is an interesting question so we're getting a weird echo so I'm going to have them bring you down to so we don't slip back on the air but. To your point again there are 2 creation stories in Genesis not just one and there's a larger question about for example when you know where does where does where do Adam and Eve's sons go to get wives how could there be existing people out there if they were created in the garden and and there are there's a lot of very compelling rabbinical mid rash these you know conversations that go on in in in Judaica where they talk about the fact that the weather there were other beings on the planet but they were human beings as we understand them and that argument of Genesis is perhaps that this is where this is the story of how humanity as we know it was created that other people may have evolved but there was a special group that was not and that this is the you know that leaving the garden means the commingling with the other earthlings but they left a very special place behind in order to do that that's what that's eventually what you know that leads to the I guess you would call the fall in some respects. But again I find these things so interesting because they're not tidy I'm not trying to sum up everything to say this is exactly how it is it's the only interpretation that's why I love studying theology and criticism because that's just when it gets interesting to me is when you have disagreement west of the Rockies Stacy is in Mesa Arizona on Coast to Coast Stacy. Hi hi to all is high in hi. I'm Leon class. I'm sorry and I feel a little funny cause I say what's your usual night Saturday. Running to ask you if you'd heard the story about Mike love the Beach Boys having someone from the Manson family but he didn't realize at the time babysitting for his kids. And also if you've heard about the. Sharon Tate was murdered going on the market for $2000000.00 Well the house is gone right the House has been plowed has it yeah Trent returned Reznor of Trent Reznor of 9 Inch Nails lived in it for a while and then whoever bought it. Knocked it down. I think I think what about the 1st to you Michael. That one of the dancing girls was babysitting for his kids yeah I hadn't heard that story but I know that they the 1st to the Beach Boys would go over to Dennis Wilson's house when the Manson family was living in the house and they remember hearing a story once where he said he they were invited over for dinner him and in maybe it was Brian 2 or Carl and they went over oh no it was it was. Johnston. And they went over to the house and they everybody was nude they were the only ones the only dinner guest wearing clothes everybody else was naked and then he they had been they were going into the studio and he went into the shower think this was a my clothes story he goes into the shower into Barros and you know Dennis is shower He's showering some one of the Manson girls gets in the shower with him. And at that moment he looks up and he sees Charles Manson staring at him in the shower. And Manson tells him Cameron sect way told something like You can't leave you can't leave and Mike Love did not take well to that so that's him being a little guy just shoved him out of there and he got out of there he no I don't think he ever went back it was just too weird so it wouldn't surprise me given the fact how long they lived to Dennis's house that he might you know he might have left his girls or his kids and in one of the girls care. Interesting I wish I could have asked Diane like that I'm sure she would have known but with thank you and I think we're at the top of the hour so I don't have time to take another call but we got a whole other hour so if you stand by we'll get a line for you give you the numbers in just a moment becoming Superman j.
