M m m m. M m m m m. M m m. M m. M m m m m. M m m m. M m m m m m m m m m. Only. Welcome to everyone listening all around the world all across the United States. We're coming to you live from the future technology headquarters which tonight is the coast to coast am studios right here in Los Angeles California standing in tonight's. Church How you doing tonight my guest is Jason Wu. Now when you think. When you think about the dreams of future technology that started to sweep across this nation back in the 1950 s. We're talking about flying cars automated kitchens rockets and the space program television jet airliners hotels in orbit moon bases anything that we could think up was a possible reality we quickly made it to the moon computers in every home and now today the Dick Tracy video telephone is used every where by just about everyone back in 1905 just 23 short years ago I lived right across the street from the coast. And I got my 1st e-mail account Lotus mail remember that probably not hideaway that same year America Online came into my world and with that more dreams of the future. You know I looked I looked at the Internet back then as my access to a world wide library that's what that's what I did that was my concept of it and I fell in love It was a giant bookstore a place where I could finally get to anything that I could think of and I would do just that I would just like sit around and go think of something what am I going to think of next and I would pop in that search you know life life was pretty good but this the same technology that I was having fun with others developed it for weapons you know g.p.s. Mapping the economy advertising and of course the news information and in a few short years you know 19051906 in a few short years it went from our world was a v.h.s. World videotapes and we jumped into D.V.D.'s and cell phones hit the market and mass we got laptop computers remember those black and white l.c.d. Screens then we want to color remember that happened right away flat screen T.V.'s computer chips are just exploding software Internet speeds that we just couldn't imagine and the year 2000 hadn't even hit yet you know and when that came to pass the year 2000 it was like we truly arrived at the digital age. Think about that it was just a few short years and how far we have come since then is absolutely astounding but I'm not so sure that we're in control of it today. The true depth of technology from our banking and Wall Street the military communications entertainment transportation infrastructure our homes and education they are so complex that nobody and I mean nobody understands or knows at all nobody that person does not exist and nor going to zation controls because they can't it's virtually impossible if you take any one segment of tech say let's just go with social media that's easy and the sheer amount of computer code the volumes of users that nearly the population of Earth is onboard with this the amount of companies involved the employees the computers the servers and what is needed to support it and keep it running is beyond anything we could have ever imagined just 20 years ago and any segment of our society today you're dealing with the same thing whether it's communication shopping logistics the trucking industry the military education it's all just a massive amount of computer data coding writing support and logistics it's crazy we had no idea none and nobody knows how this system is running and stays running. But more importantly its effects on us society we never took any of that into consideration we never thought about our children or what this would do to them or the future you know it was it was just that we wanted the future of our youth and the future looked fun and I was part of it but very quickly in the last 1518 years governments state actors and tech companies jumped on the information bandwagon not only how to distribute it and we know about that but how to collect it how to buy it how to sell it and then how to use it sure today we can order something and have it delivered right right to our home a drone dropping a pizza off at our house we can view virtually any music in any music t.v. Program movie in the history of everything and stream it in seconds we get our news instantly the world is connected in real time today every individual on this planet can reach out to anyone else and Face Time think about that and with it it comes at a price are we ready to pay it some of us already have I think myself personally that we've gotten way ahead of ourselves on our skis we have but we are here and we're starting to realize that things may have moved just a little bit too fast just a little bit too quickly and that's where authors like Jason Louve for me come into play his book hyper world's underworld is about those utopian dreams those dreams that started in the 1950 s. And stay with us through today and I'm talking about globalization technology Ai transhumanism robots mass communications all of that is here we live with it and some want it to control. Us but there is a way out there is a way to slow down you know maybe throw that card in the machine Yeah it's going to be a very special evening tonight here on Coast to nose coast to coast because right in front of me is Jason Wu He's alive with me here in the studio the studio is Doc turn down your lights get ready you can follow me right now on Twitter at j to retrace Dio You can also follow Jason at Jason Lou on Twitter you know the drama Twitter is always live to my left any questions or comments or composed I'm right there your tweet if it's good we'll get read on the air enjoy the bumper music tonight I got Jason here live in the studio so I got to show my. Welcome back to coast to coast am I am your host Jimmy church on this beautiful Saturday night here in Southern California you can follow me on Twitter it's simple at j. Church Radio My guest tonight is Jason Wu and you can follow him on Twitter at Jason Wu We've got Twitter up here in the studio and I will pay attention to your questions and comments and the other things that I want to mention really quick is that Jason is somebody that I have followed for a very. Long time and his most recent book is John d. And the empire of angels but I've wanted to sit down with Jason and talk about the things that I discuss here on Coast to Coast so often which is surveillance and and what is going on with technology in our world today and he's a journalist has been writing that he's been covering surveillance international trade the dark side of technology he's written for Vice News buoying buoying motherboard many more and as a futurist and a strategist Jason has worked on Buzz Aldrin's international campaign to colonize Mars and Google's artist and a machine intelligence program has also spent over 20 years engaged in 1st hand intensive research into the world's esoteric spiritual traditions and I would like to welcome to coast to coast right here live in the studio author Jason Wu Jason good evening yes has gone Jimmy Well you know obviously it's great because I've got to hear and mentioning John de Jason out of the gate for those because of the books popularity today. I think a lot of. People who read the book may associate you with that but not necessarily your coverage in journalism and your essays on technology for such a long time which is what attracted to me attracted me to you from the very beginning well I've worked on all kinds of various things and all kinds of crazy stuff but it's all been unified in my career that I've really been asking one question which is how can we bring wisdom to the present the technological world that we live in we live in a world since the Manhattan Project where the technology that we've developed has accelerated so fast and you know the getting to the point where we could wipe out all life on earth many times over was just the beginning you know now we've got. Worldwide surveillance we've got Ai we've got drone warfare autonomous weapons all this stuff but our wisdom is lagging behind so I looked at both ends of this equation how do we you know how do we understand this crazy technological overload world that we live in an art of there is there wisdom we can bring to bear on it you know I believe that our wisdom should be accelerating just as fast as our technology so that's the one question that I've asked and that's what's what has brought it all together and I truly believe that we live in a crisis point right now where you know within the next 10 years we have 10 years to sort out Ai we have 10 years to sort out the ecological crisis and we're not going to get another chance you know this is not. This is not a drill you know this is not a stage rehearsal it's either we get it right or not so you know I've I've bridged many gaps in my career and brought many disciplines together but frankly I think we need everything we've got as a human species to confront what's in front of us do you remember your 1st real computer you know your 1st real laptop What year was that 1985 that's exactly right Ok so let's let's that's exactly what it was the right answer and I haven't been off the computer since right do you have any idea that in such a short period of time that we would be here talking about these subjects in 2018 that we would have had these kind of absolutely astounding dramatic changes in our lifestyle and everything about our lives well you know I grew up reading cyberpunk and Neuromancer and watching Blade Runner and you know reading Mondo 2000 and things like that so I feel like I kind of saw it coming you know it's like all that was predicted or maybe it was predictive programming the disk the great dystopian technological technologic future and now here we are you know we didn't get Star Trek The Next Generation but we got Blade Runner you know they delivered on that yeah you know no doubt and I look at it like this I would like your comment. From 1950 until 1905 really our world didn't change much the houses looked the same the cars still look just saying the jet airliners all look has everything we even stopped going to the moon by then right so there wasn't any dramatic changes today what has happened from 190519052 now dramatic changes it's at a breakneck pace that I don't see it slowing down well it's like you know Moore's Law of computer processors accelerating or Terence McKenna always used to say the rate of novelty in the universe was doubling in the for you know the further we got into the future but I think that we really hit like a some type of terminal velocity sometime around 2012 you know there was a whole 2012 prophecy and oh there's going to be something tremendous happening and then nothing happened but really did nothing happen because from where I'm sitting we live in a world now that is completely you know shattered every thing that we think about you know everything that we think about every boundary every you know we live in a magical in chanted world now and we're on a roller coaster that we can't get off you know so I really feel that. You know I look to esoteric wisdom and spiritual traditions to try and give me some type of guiding light on what's happening right now you know and that's kind of my own personal hang up maybe but our I think that. It's been absolutely phenomenal the rate of change and the crazy thing about that too is nobody knows what's going on you know you would think oh the heads of Google all the heads of Facebook must be steering the ship like everyone is trying to catch up with the rate at which technology is doubling let alone when machine learning an artificial intelligence really start going you know when the when the evolutionary algorithms that will drive Ai really start kicking in we're going to be living in a world where the computers are accelerating themselves way faster than human beings are even capable of understanding and I think that's one of the points that we need to drive home for further not only this audience but for everybody on this planet anything that you point at it doesn't matter what segment of industry corporations lifestyle it doesn't matter where you point the layers of complexity of software and computer language an infrastructure that is involved there has gotten so complex that nobody knows what's going on if you think about the mortgage in the banking industry I'm not talking about direct t.v. Or satellites or communications was you know let's just talk about banking or we could talk about the music industry we could talk about cars automation or or food or farming it doesn't matter everything is gotten so complex so fast and nobody seems to know what's going on well the big thing that people need to understand that's happening right now and it's going to change every single sector of society no matter who you are on no matter what your job is is machine learning and big data so people talk about artificial intelligence It's a buzzword they throw it around they think oh you know the Terminator or something like that but what machine learning actually is it is algorithms that are meant to process gigantic amounts of data so it's kind of the 1st iteration of Ai if you will so what you're saying what you're just saying there's so much data in the world that nobody can keep up with it well human beings can't keep up with the. But algorithms meant to sort like billions of you know billions of megabytes billions of gigabytes of data running on a computer superclusters they can make sense of things so right so the whole push towards Ai whether it's the financial sector agriculture like you're talking about Google you know understanding search understanding how people take rights no matter what you know every single big corporation right now has a toe in machine learning and what they want is to be able to process ungodly amounts of information and be able to extract meaningful meaningful data out of it so they can improve their business that's where machine learning is out right now and of course that applies to things like surveillance also so we have to be very careful well and see that and I think that's exactly the point it's it's one thing to maybe look at a video game and understood and understand the concept of coding in an artificial intelligence with some anime that you're going to battle in this game to get out of some level Ok we I can understand that but it's when you get to this advanced stages of concept and code writing of this of huge amounts of data and who is in control of it this is a whole nother ball game that we are in and this is what you're talking about there that applies to every single shag men of our life Absolutely and it's it's going to get so crazy so fast that people are going to feel like they got hit by a self driving truck you know it's going to happen overnight we're not prepared for how society is going to change the 1st thing obviously is autonomous trucking you know all the trucks are going to be replaced Watan if you're cols Now that's huge because truck drivers the number one job in America that's right right so so all of a sudden that's going to change overnight then you're going to have self driving cars your group or your lift those are going to be autonomous but from there we're going to be looking at. That you know automation intelligence software is going to not is going to start replacing white collar jobs lawyer doctor computer programmer is going to go really fast pretty much every job that people are doing right now and they're not talking about it much in the media but it's coming and it's going to hit overnight and that's why people are talking about things like universal basic income because they're thinking like you know the people who are developing these things are like oh my god like him know how are we going to like how is the site he going to deal with this we're going to have to like give people some type of universal basic income so there's not just total chaos and you have to occupy a mind to what So what does everybody do do they just go back to school for the rest of their lives I mean you know it sounds like a very fun perpetual vacation but that is not a way to move forward as a society right well I think the best possible scenario is that the best part of humanity comes out it's like Look nobody likes to work Ok you people who love their jobs love to work but for the most part people who are just doing a job to make money they don't actually enjoy their job and so the best case scenario is that of automation frees up people from doing menial tasks that this great reservoir of human creativity will come out of people be working on or they'll be focusing on spirituality they'll be you know creating communities and having more of a social life having more of a spiritual life the worst case scenario is like the purge you know can write so the worst case scenario is that people don't adapt to that new reality and they interpret it as you know why everything's being taken from me and I'm being victimized and really the way this goes I mean it comes down to it comes down to. You know education it comes down to but it comes down what it really comes down to is decisions that each individual person is going to have to make about how they cope with this reality and I don't think anyone is prepared this is coast to coast am I'm your host Jimmy church our guest tonight live in the studio author Jason Lou now and the thing is this and it's very important changes are coming we dig it ahead of our skis how we control it and what we do next is what we're going to talk about tonight this is coast to coast am. name our top 967-4200. 80 is Japanese for the future and in the future your commute will be less expensive because now you can get a special lease on a toilet a moronic hour by hydrogen it emits only water into it will cover 3 years worth of your fuel costs up to $15000.00 to get 3 years no cost Kegel maintenance each of the lane access in the be eligible for a $5000.00 state rebate the future sounds pretty good get your special lease on America today see San Francisco Toyota or click the banner for details Toyota let's go places. Welcome back to coast to coast am I'm your host Jimmy church beautiful Saturday night here in Southern California our guest tonight is Jason Wu and we are discussing his book hyper world underworlds which Jason the book was written in 2014 that was you know 4 years ago now did you see where we were headed by 2018 because this is a book of your articles and essays and a collection of what you have written in the past and was what was the reason for collecting everything together was it a warning was it a help a cookbook of some kind for everybody to to you know see what was about to happen Well Wolf you know a warning and a hopeful message and just a wake up call really that we need to be paying attention to what's going on I think you mean by 2010 I spent most of my twenty's meditating right you know I spent most of my twenty's meditating and also working and writing and you know trying to attain enlightenment all the things you do when you're young guy but by 2010 I think I've developed a pretty coherent view of the world where this might sound funny but it became clear to me that all you need to do to understand where the human race is going is look at factory farms right I think that if you look at factor in this is not like a you know environmentalist message necessarily or like I'm not was not like a vegan propaganda message but if you see how we treat the beings lower than us then you'll see where we're heading as a species and it I had a moment of clarity in 2010 where I retire I realized that we had 2 options as a human race right either we got off world and got into colonizing other planets just because of overpopulation. Or horrible horrible things were going to happen here you know it's just we're getting too crowded things are getting completely out of hand here the environment is falling apart and you know we're facing challenges extensional threats in the 21st century that are almost beyond comprehension right not just the environmental crisis but but yes Ai technology mass surveillance you know but these are not hopeless things because all of these things contain the seed of redemption you know Ai itself may be the thing that we need exactly the thing we need to solve the environmental crisis and Ai may be the thing that we need to get to space you know so I think the playing field is changing so rapidly that I felt the need to a uniform people were out and b. Let people know that very matter and that the human spirit and the human soul definitely do matter not without being cheap not you know not being cheesy not being new age but consciousness matters because we have so much to face as a species we need to be face it consciously aware we so well all this Huxley you know wrote brave new world in 1931 and discussing exam based on exactly what you're talking about now in the world that we lived in now he was for affirming 2 humans being geoengineering and and growing on farms. And incubated But just like you said now that's you know fish farms and that it's exactly what he warned us about 1931 and we just thought it was a you know it was a good book it was a warning of the future but we didn't heed anything absolutely I mean I think if you look at you know the modern 1st world or America it's kind of like a combination of a prison camp and a chuck e. Cheese's you know it's late and I think that's what all of this Huxley was kind of pointing out in that book in Brave New World where we were Amusing Ourselves to Death you know we live in a time when. But you know I don't need to harp on the environmental crisis but there are very very you know things are falling apart and yet And yet at the same time we have 10000 distractions I mean you can go on You Tube and watch everything ever recorded there's every video game ever made and they're all awesome you know you can listen to every single piece of music is like there's endless does you know just go outside and there's endless themed restaurants and sports bars to get it's here and it's like the spectacle is the situation is called it in the sixty's it's like it's inescapable you know at the matrix if you want to be reductive about it sure so we live in it we live in a hypnotized society and that's very very dangerous because we are you know on the edge of a precipice and that's not conspiratorial It's not like oh there's some bad guy out there and it's much more frightening than that it's just that the conditions on the ground on earth are rapidly deteriorating wall our ability to to hypnotize ourselves and check out into electronic media is rapidly accelerating well and we asked for it see that's the thing we wanted these luxuries we wanted the cell phones we wanted streaming streaming entertainment. To the automation in our cars and navigation so we can go out and explore things all of these things these conveniences are things that we wanted and hoped for but now we've got it and I don't think we in any way thought about the implications what it would do to our emotions our children our structures certainly our environment that was all you know not discussed or not thought about we just got way ahead of where we are technology we just didn't stop it and didn't consider it and I think that's the most important thing to talk about you know what we're creating a society of children you know we're creating a society where everyone demands to be amused constantly 247 and people don't need to grow out of their adolescent phase ever wall you know. The real adult serious issues are you know staring them down like a dragon you know when I was a kid. You know on one of my days off the computer my grandfather told me one of the most profound things anyone's ever said to me which was you know when we were doing woodworking we were in the shop and he was pointing out all the tools he had and he said yeah either you use the tool you don't let the tool use you right and that's where we're at we're being used but we're being used by our own toys that we created to amuse ourselves one of the one of the greatest means and you know again part of technology right now means you have entered our lives but one of the most telling means Avar. Has deer I see a shot of a museum there is a bench and like in the background is whatever it's Washington crossing the Delaware is the law Last Supper or whatever it is this beautiful painting 10 foot by 10 foot painting and in front of it is a couch with 6 teenage girls all staring into their cell phones not one looking at the art on the wall and that's exactly it you know and today when I see somebody pick up their cell phone and look at it every 2 minutes my question is do you think the world changed what changed since the last time you picked up your phone what is it is that life changing e-mail coming in that is going to alter your life in the last 2 minutes what's the necessity for doing this and it's not just one person or small segment of society we're talking about Earth is doing this right you know the Buddhists have a such a useful concept called the 10000 things and the 10000 things are those things that are always there distracting you from meditation or work or just you know living the life you know you're meant to live right so it could just be all you got to take out the trash today oh you know you're you had a argument with somebody oh that refrigerator stopped running you know it's like the 10000 things with all these distractions Well now it's like the 10000000 things right because of electronic media and the crazy thing to think about Jimi is while all these people are sitting there with their heads facing the ground their vertebrae slowly disintegrating as they stare at their phones every single thing they're clicking everything they're pausing on everything they walk by all of that data is being harvested and stuck in a server a bank somewhere and and you know somewhere in the desert somewhere and they're preparing these machines and they're doing they're putting machine learning machine learning algorithms on these things to go through everything and build models on how to make people buy more how to make. More addicted to cell phones I mean there's people now whose entire job title and job role is just to make apps more addictive and games more addictive and mimic you know they figured out how to mimic the neurochemistry of serious drug addiction and put it into apps so that you keep scrolling Instagram you know and you keep on Facebook at this the real thing you know it's not a considered it's all out in the open and all that data is being processed and processed and processed but you know but ultimately who's the data being processed for in alternately all that data is going to go to build an ai which to all intents and purposes will be a God right and will be beyond work we're all currently you know Iran must call it summoning the demon right we're all with every little tap in click and participation in this electronic thing we're bringing this Ai future from closer and closer and that's not a human future has has the is there a possibility that our d.n.a. Has changed. Taishan in society that our next generation of children we're going to look at the d.n.a. Strand of compared to past d.n.a. And see an alter that happened you know some little thing in the year 20182015 and I'm not exaggerating is it a possibility absolutely I mean I'm not a geneticist obviously but but I know that there have been breakthroughs in the field of epigenetics where they've they've determined that experience of parents passed on their experiences to their children at a genetic level so for instance people who went to the Holocaust passed down some of that trauma some of that p.t.s.d. To their children at the genetic level so they've they've seen that d.n.a. Is altered can be altered by life experience so I don't doubt it and of course it goes all the food reading there's everything in the air there's all the adulterants and everything I wouldn't be surprised I'm not a geneticist but you know if you look at somebody now the average individual now versus you know someone in 1942 it's a little different. I. I just spent some time in New York and it doesn't matter where you go but walking down a sidewalk in New York and watching people pass me and I was amazed it reminds me of the sparrows or the little birds the finches over in England that figured out how to. Get the caps off a milk bottles at work and the right and genetically passed on that knowledge to the other you know birds and they all figured out how to open up the milk bottles and milk bottles were delivered in the morning now today walking down the street and watching everybody pass me by looking at their cell phone and being able to walk and not bump into nobody's looking at where they're going but they are alert to their surroundings and it's like lemmings to the sea right everybody just focused on their or their data and knowledge information center in their hand and walking and it seemed to me that something happened there's something as altered in ourselves now where this this evolutionary step has actually taken place I agree and this is why we need spirituality more than ever and by spirituality you know forget the dogma forget you know specific religions things like that if you look at every spiritual tradition throughout history whether it's Christianity or Buddhism or Hinduism they all basically say the same thing which is wake up. Might wake up and how much more pertinent is that now than in any other time it's just like put your head up you know stop looking at your phone. Look around at you you know just today I spent all today cultivating the practice of paying incredibly close attention to everything around me and it was like a psychedelic experience you know because we don't do it so the normal life is a psychedelic experience and we've forgotten how important it is because I know it sounds like a cliche but it's almost everything we do whether it's checking our phone you know having interpersonal drama like whatever it is like almost everything we do is designed to numb us from our own experience to run away from our own experience but what if we could just stop and appreciate it for a 2nd and let it catch up with us. Do you remember the 1st time you saw a pop up ad in 1905 on your computer and how outraged you were right and that was the beginning of the changes today digital advertising and the manipulation of what you see is so tailored now and so customized and so quick on the customization we all know if you click on something 20 minutes later you're going to see it in an ad it goes by very skillfully done today the manipulation of information tailored to you is astounding but has done so well now that we don't get outraged like we did when we saw the 1st pop ups right while they had they have made it almost like it's just they're constantly satisfying our desire but anyone who's ever you know I've I haven't ever you know I've worked in advertising it was a fascinating experience and I've done I played a lot with Facebook advertising if you get into the back into Facebook that thing is not a social network All right Facebook is like Cerebro the helmet from X.-Men that Patrick Stewart puts on and he can see into the minds of everyone on the planet that's what Facebook is Facebook knows everything you have ever done and people can basically write computer programs more or less to target their product to exactly the person that they want to show it to so it's a quantum leap in advertising but really what Facebook really is is it's you know it's a record of the collective thoughts of you know at least everyone who's ever used Facebook everything they've ever done and that data is you know data is the oil of the future as they say it's valuable stuff the numbers between Facebook You Tube and Google collectively. Are 4000000000 people every single day all day long and the fascinating thing about that is it's all. So a circle right you see a video on You Tube and then you jump out you research it on Google you've got your now over on to Facebook you see another video there that's link back to youtube and the next thing you know you could spend 8 hours on those 3 different platforms and all of the advertising is watching everything that you're doing the ai and it's an incredible thing to see and you can watch the ads accumulate and play right back atcha to as the day develops it's fascinating it is fascinating and look if somebody just gets your e-mail address and they they can know everything about you they know they have all your social media profiles likeness write a program to pull the data they know everything you like they know whether you like dogs they know whether you've been divorced so they know if you want to go shopping for stainless steel pots they know everything right and that's just the publicly available data let alone the iceberg of data that they're sitting on and what you were just talking about that circle where you're you know are you it seems to be organic Oh I just clicked You Tube and I went to Wikipedia and I was in a research research tunnel for an hour was that really you or did you get corralled into an experience that somebody wanted wanted you to have you know and we know I mean we know there are all these tactics of persuasion and manipulation and neuro linguistic programming you think that stuff doesn't work on computers Let me tell you like the amount to which people can be programmed by computers is is. You know it's it's something we've never seen before as a species and that's the other thing I brought up all this Huxley but we can't speak about any of this without talking about George Orwell and 1904 or well Ian is a word I think it's a word and we are in that right now and certainly when you go back and watch or read 1940 a day and I. I know it's a cliche right everybody wants to mention 1904 or well Ian in reference to our world today but the truth is the truth we are certainly living with that the Ministry of Truth and the things that we were warned about this goes back to that book was released in 1949 right this is coast to coast am our guest tonight one of my favorites author Jason Lu is here live in the studio now Twitters at a church radio at Jason Lu is his Twitter post anything there any questions or comments and I'll read them right here and I get you involved here in the show a little bit later on tonight Jason will be taking your phone calls I'm just along for the ride This is coast to coast am.
