A nice night out for people in downtown sonoma was disrupted saturday night after deputies say they were forced to shoot an armed man. The scene broke out on west napa and Second Street after deputies were told a man was trying to damage cars in a Shopping Center parking lot when they found the man they discovered he was armed with a gun and was trying to break the window of a limo. Deputies told him to drop the gun. The suspect refused. And shot at least one time at the deputy did not hit the deputy santa rosa. Police Sergeant Chris from ahern says thats when the deputy shot back. We believe the deputy hit him at least one time. The suspect then fled further into that parking lot. The suspect ran away but ended up face to face with more Law Enforcement minutes later popped out with the gun. Still in his hand, approaching deputies and a second deputy shot him. Police say the suspect fell to the ground and was taken to the hospital. Hes in Critical Condition because deputy shot the suspect. Theyre on paid administrative leave. The Santa Rosa Police department and the District Attorneys Office are investigating jessicas aunt to owned a Leather Goods store on the sonoma plaza just about a block away from where the shooting happened to that. A small town. So can be stuff happens. She says she is one Security Camera and despite the incident, shes not going to take any more precautions. She says in this community, people look out for one another. I do feel safety having the bar right there. Stein us shuri. Theyre open from 6 in the morning if i yell loud enough, somebody is going to me and come home front. The suspect is local to the Sonoma Valley area. All right, amanda, thank you. Stay in the north bay tonight, a santa rosa man was arrested for possession of meth and gun ammunition. Up there say traffic stop. They noticed a gun at the feet of the driver. They later found that the gun was firing bbcs 2 rounds of rifle, ammunition and also a small bag of meth were also found in this car. The man is convicted felon and unable to have ammunition in his possession. New at 8, a man behind bars in connection to an attempted assault at the walnut creek, bart station. Bart police say 34 yearold Richard Mcdowell of pittsburgh forced a 20 yearold woman into the elevator after both exited an sfo bound train just before midnight. They say he tried to take her pants off, but the victim fought back and was able to escape. A bart Police Sergeant spotted him saturday and was able to take him into custody. Also out of walnut creek tonight, police are looking for a suspect they believe shot at another man last night. The attempted homicide happened on the cul de sac of Hutchinson Court near northgate high school. The victim is in the hospital and will reportedly be ok, police tell us theres no threat to the community as this was an isolated incident. If you do have any information, youre asked to contact walnut creek pd. A teacher from the nation middle school has been arrested suspected of having an inappropriate relationship with a student. According to the school superintendent, 56 yearold kurt michael cent sexually inappropriate messages to a student. The School District notified police who arrested sunday on friday. He was booked on suspicion of harmful matter, sent with intent of to a minor, which is a felony. No other information has been released. Police say this investigation is ongoing tonight. Traffic a little heavy today on highway 24 in orinda following a rollover crash this afternoon. This happened in the eastbound lanes just east of the caldecott tunnel around one. 45 u haul truck telling an rv lost control and overturned, triggering a sig alert. We know at least one person was injured, but its not clear the extent of those injuries. The crash blocked 3 lanes for about 3 hours. The truck and trailer uprighted and eventually towed away. A 37 yearold oakley man was killed in a solo vehicle crash in brentwood. It happened near grant street and fairview avenue just before 7. 30, this morning. Brentwood police say the vehicle had overturned and when they arrived, they found the victim inside. No one else was involved in the crash. Police believe the driver was speeding at the time. Toxicology results are pending. The name of the victim has not yet been released. Californias Opioid Crisis continues to kill thousands of people each year, 10 years ago, fentanyl caused about 80 deaths across the state this past year. The state reported nearly 6,000 deaths due to the drug. Thats a 70 percent most of that increase happened between 2020 2021. This month, San Francisco assemblyman matt haney was tapped to lead a Bipartisan Committee to state of state lawmakers to try and investigate some solutions. These drugs are coming. In some cases from overseas sometimes are made in the u. S. Not only do we need to make sure that people who are addicted to fentanyl get help. But we also have to make sure that were stopping this a flow of these drugs into our state. The first hearing to present solutions for this problem is set for january of next year. All right. Dana, well, im afraid cause billions of dollars in damage to region, but a retired usgs scientists says because of the quake, a tremendous amount of work has been done to strengthen infrastructure when you bridges freeway overpasses, improving the water system. These images here change the bay area in a matter of seconds. This was 33 years ago on was a shock to the bay. There. The loma prieta earthquake catching the public and even the Science Community off guard. There was a real air of complacency. When David Schwartz joined the u. S. Geological survey in 1985, he says the focus was on the San Andreas Fault in southern california. The bay area hadnt seen a major quake since a 7. 9 San Francisco earthquake in 19. 0, 6, in the bay area basically was in africa. So that changed after loma prieta. The 6. 9 magnitude quake destroying bridges and leveling homes and buildings. 63 people died and more than 3,000 injured. The shaking lasted an agonizing 15 seconds. Shake terrible. I grew up new california. And grew up here in southern california. Up here and been through a lot of earthquakes. But this is really different than other ones. And it was a little scary and you could or g is the owner of bookshop. Santa cruz. His business and much of pacific avenue in downtown santa cruz was in ruins. The location closer to the epicenter of the quake in the santa cruz mountains. We had 400 people come put on hard hats. They carry all those books out there so we can keep going. Fleming of harrisonburg, according to a statement, the harrisburg, harrisonburg Police Department posted on twitter this afternoon. Fortunately, all 8 of those victims had non lifethreatening injuries. Were told none of them for students. New york city opening new shelters and expecting to spend 1 billion dollars to help support the thousands of migrants who have been bussed into the city from southern states. New york city mayor eric adams declaring a state of emergency earlier this month as the citys shelter system struggles to accommodate the influx of migrants, other relief and Nonprofit Groups have stepped up to try welcome the people arriving in new york, providing basics like shoes and food to those in need. And the idea is we went over to the Port Authority and socks and shoes just to change the give them back their dignity. The first step they come down to new york soil. Hes the star of the latest film from petaluma zone ignite animation studios. A classic heros journey about the runt of the litter who overcomes a few obstacles to find his forever home. I think its just a very simple story. It tells it tells the attraction jean schulz was the executive producer for the film and this also involved with canine companions, a National Organization headquartered in santa rosa. That raises and trains dogs to assist those who might be facing one of nearly 70 different disabilities as a board member schultz has a pulse and the need for service dogs and wanted to try telling the story from the dogs perspective mean our magnificent. You know, they are so willing to work and attached to the human. They work for. But this just tells it. So simply it was really fun to create the story and the dilemma. And how you actually push through your fears and accomplish what youre trying to do for director jamie wheless. This was not his first time working in animation by any stretch. His credits include yoda the hoke and davy jones, but directing the short film during the pandemic presented its own challenges. Our top story this halfhour, the suspected stockton serial killer behind bars. Now police catching Wesley Brownlee while they believe he was searching for his next victim. The arrest comes after investigators connected a series of murders in stockton and another in oakland to him. The cases date back to april 10th of 2021. And thats a man was shot and killed in oakland. Police say they found their suspect near village. Green drive early yesterday morning adding that he had a gun and a mask around his neck. After stockton, police announced the arrest, those who live in the same apartment complex as brownlee say they were shocked to find out the suspected killer have been their neighbor. Rowena shaddox was at that complex today with their reaction. Its weird. Its a scary its how many reacted when they learned their neighbor at this apartment complex in stockton was 43 yearold Wesley Brownlee. The suspected serial killer. Police arrested him Early Saturday Morning after a Surveillance Team followed him while he drove watched his pattern and determined he was hunting to kill someone. Cops say he was in dark clothing with a mask around his neck and a gun in his waistband when they took him into custody. Residents here tell us that Stockton Police were out here in full force. They even had an Armored Vehicle and they barged through the suspects front door when they came to his house. I didnt think that the like i did anything at the moment. I was. My when the recording and im like, what did they got going and that is young yellen. Succumbing to now say so. But i just had a big flash main kaylie says before she learned that brownlee lived in her building, she wanted to be more informed about the killings that were happening and look them up in literally one ig ph the every location was literally 4 minutes away, payments away. 5 minutes away. 8 minutes away. So so close. Officers arrested him around a mile from his place and say the killings occurred in close proximity, including one from august, just 2 blocks away, an unsettling thought for those living only feet away from his front door like claudia corona. When i see his face, i will say this guy looks really about where because could use right across from your unit. Yeah. Thats its great. It is a to be honest. That was Rowena Shaddox reporting for us tonight. We do want to give you a timeline of the homicides. Police say are tied to the now arrested suspected serial killer Wesley Brownlee. That first shooting. Happened back in april of last year in oakland. Then the crimes moved to stockton. A woman was shot near park and union streets. She survived a year later on july 8th of this year, a man was shot and killed near elaine at east robin hood drives that in august a man was killed near be on the road that same month killing occurred on east hammer lane on september. 21st, a man was then killed on manchester avenue. The last one taking place on september 27th when a man was killed near gettysburg place as Violent Crime continues to terrorize oakland. The City Council President says the work is being done to stop the crime wave. Oakland has marked 103 homicides so far this year. Some Community Groups say theyre getting fed up with what they say is a lack of support from city leaders. Just last month the city was rattled by a shooting at a school where 6 people were injured. And in chinatown, theyve got as far as calling for City Council PresidentNikki Fortunato boss to resign counts. President says that she is working to improve her district. We all know that guns are at the root of these killings that too easy to access and younger people have guns. We also know that theres a very small number of people committing these crimes. A majority of these homicides, homicides are related to group in gang violence. The City Council President is up for reelection next month. She along with the council and mayor have been calling for the federal government to help out and address the gun violence issue. There. And the city of oakland. Men, women and dogs showed up for cancer survivors and drivers at the American Cancer Society making strides against cancer. Walk on sunday. Either theyve through it or knew someone who did everyone was there for one goal to beat cancer. We can do it. We can do it. Reynoso has been participating in the walk for 13 years. More than 20 years ago she was diagnosed with cancer that that said that i have only played ios she credits her faith and team of supporters who walked next to her kristi field decked out in customize shirts. Names is white, but its i know many people through the years and, you know, i i had cancer, but Ernestine Montgomery watson didnt realize the severity of the disease until it came knocking on her doorstep. She was diagnosed with cancer, but beating in 2018. The one thing that the doctor that was doing a biopsy said 20 years ago we would caught this until it wasnt. Hughes the fight is still on for many across the world. According to the organization, cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States except for skin cancer. Its 3, of all new female cancers. Each year. Every dollar raised is going towards research to hopefully find a cure and deadly montgomery says Early Detection is key and could possibly help save many lives that they take.
