Kron 4s Charles Clifford talked to caltrans about what theyre doing to keep the tunnels safe. Reporter the first and second bores of the caldecott tunnel were built in the 1930s. The third bore was finished in 1964. The fatal 1982 fire, forced engineers to improve Safety Standards and since then caltrans regularly looks for ways to make the tunnels safer. Caltrans spokesman bob hauss says several upgrades have recently been finished or are ongoing. That includes putting in a more robust water system. We have an 8 inch water line going in, so that will make it easier for firefighters to have a good strong supply of water in case theres another incident like this. Theyve also improved the Radio Network inside the tunnels so First Responders can communicate more effectively and theyre working on upgrading the public address system that can deliver emergency information to drivers. That way if there is an accident like today you can turn on the public address system and say, remain in your car or exit this way reporter because getting radio signals through the tunnels can be difficult. Reporter and theyve also started working on whats called a scoping study that will look for others ways to improve safety. Reporter meanwhile, the new fourth bore of the caldecott tunnel is nearing completion. The tunnel will feature high powered ventilation, pull out lanes, emergency exits, a public address system and a robust Fire Suppression system.
