[crying] record and i am sorry. where you go from here? >> i have to take it one day at a time, that is all i can do. she will always be in my heart. i have memories and its pictures, that is all that i can go by. to not talk to her in the person is, to not be able to see her again, it is very hard. what a white guy said, i hope that they have the right person in the that he gets lucky deserves. let justice be served. the san leandro police are still looking for another suspect. they need help in locating this person. >>pam: a suspect wanted in connection with a workplace shooting in at richmond, a 50 year-old duran long jr., a concord resident working as a security guard. he allegedly shot a co-worker at an apartment complex in richmond on wednesday night. prior to that shooting, he is accused of opening fire on his neighbor's home. haaziq madyun shows you what may have saved his neighbor's life. >>haaziq: a barrage of bullets flying into this home in concord. cal was all holes in the walls throughout the house. all that stood between a family of five and a steady stream of gun shots and was this still. the family huddled here on the kitchen floor while it is alleged that their next-door neighbor doran long jr. opened fire on their home wednesday night. the family walked me through the house shall need the damage including how one bullet nearly struck a 12 year-old boy sleeping in this dead. a witness told me that around 9:50 p.m. on wednesday, long was spotted backing his pickup truck out of the driveway of his home. he drove into the middle of the street and opened fire. neighbors describe this out. >>pam: we had to break into that report because we just curious another strong jolts, that is the second aftershock. it happened just seconds ago as liberal listing to a report from haaziq madyun. the lights on the set shook violently. we will try to get someone from usgs on the line to answer some questions about the earth quake. we do want to hear from you if you felt the earthquake. you can see that line on your screen, that indicates a bit of what happened, but here in the studio, it was very strong. there was an earthquake earlier today, it was a 410 magnitude. we have been talking about that most of the date. it measured 4.0 magnitude. it was centered on the hayward fault about 2 mi. southeast of berkeley. again, it was felt over a wide area. the one we just felt seemed stronger. we are in the process of gathering information about that earthquake. we are calling to try and get some experts on the line for more information. there is a picture of the seismograph. it may turn out to be just an aftershock from the earlier earthquake. this is certainly a good reminder for all of us, this is earthquake country and we need to be prepared. >>jaqueline: it will be a matter of moments until we have information about this earthquake. it takes a couple of minutes, with technology, to sense where the earthquake was. vibrating in the orange is the earth quake from earlier today in the aftershock bay. the one that hit felt stronger. that was a pretty strong jolt. we will keep you posted as soon as we get the information. >>pam: at this is an event lick to the bay area. this was the annual day for california to practice what to do in light of an earthquake. here in san francisco, the children were getting a lesson, a reminder of how to death in hold once something happened. >>pam: again, we are in the process of gathering information. let's check in with kiberlee sakamoto. >>kimberlee: we have over 65 comments already. from all over the bay area, people are saying that they felt this. they definitely think it felt stronger than the earthquake we felt earlier. >>kimberlee: we are trying to gather information from the usgs to figure out the magnitude and where it was centered. we will bring you that information as soon as it can. >>pam: we are hearing the culinary magnitude, it is a registered as a 4.2 magnitude earthquake. earlier today on the hayward fault it was a 410 activity. >>pam: all looked on with us now is catherine heenan to. >>catherine: i am a few blocks away at a restaurant. there was a huge cry that went out in the restaurant. not again ask a basic point there was a shaking in the ruling. when it passed, people work sleekly applauding. there was an initial reaction of, not again. so soon. >>pam: the lights here in the studio were shaking. when you were here during the 4.0 magnitude, could you compare it to? did we lose catherine? we are getting some other people calling in. we have eight you were on the line. jeff? >>pam: we are still trying to route those phone calls into the station. the preliminary reading is a 4.2 magnitude earthquake. it hit about 8:17 p.m.. weaver in the middle of a report and had to break in as the earthquake rattled and jolted the newsroom. let's try to take another phone call, cynthia? caller yes. >>pam: what did you feel? caller i felt an initial jolt and then another after that. it was almost like a skipped a beat or something. >>pam: were you at home during the earlier earthquake today? can you compare them? color ma > >caller: i felt that this one was stronger. >>pam: thank you for calling in to let us know how you respond to this latest earthquake. this is the second earthquake today. the first was a 4.0 magnitude around for 30 >>jaqueline: i have plotted where this one hits. very close by. about 1 mi. from berkeley. the orange vibrating behind the red, the earthquakes are in the same of the city. this is the biggest one of the day. it is kind of strange, the aftershocks have been coming hours later, normally with an earthquake you get aftershocks right away. >>pam: and jacqueline, thank you. again, the irony is this state of california actually had an earthquake drill today. it is an annual drolled that is held to remind people how to respond to an earthquake. these smaller earthquakes are good to get a family plan together, your medications, your contact list, how you will connect with family members and loved ones during an emergency. we're going to check in with a deep sleep. >>gabe: i am in pacifica. >>pam: we encourage you, if you have pictures of damage that occurred from any of the earthquakes, call us and let us know what this experience was like for you. >>kimberlee: we are really hearing from viewers about this second earthquake. earlier, the earth quake was really center. now, the comments we are seeing, a sunnyvale, santa clara, pretty far down there. >>kimberlee: we have been told by the usgs said it was a 4.2 magnitude earthquake. its >>pam: a 4.2 magnitude earthquake hit at a 4:00 p.m.. the usgs is a rating get as a a 4.2 magnitude earthquake. it hit near berkeley just as the one earlier this afternoon did. on the line with us, and valerie from lafayette. what was that like? >>caller: it was very scary. i was laying on my bed is the with my husband. when it hit, there was a huge jolt that shook our two-story house. i screamed out loud. i was amazed when they said it was only a 4.2. >>pam: we were surprised. something! we have not even gotten downstairs yet, we are still sitting here getting our nerves together. >>pam: think it's recalling. we have information for those who might be commuting. grant lodes is standing by in the newsroom. >>grant: we're getting word of board delays as a result of this. this is standard for a call. 16 minute delays as of right now. every time an earthquake happens, bart officials and engineers will examine the tracks and trains. >>pam: we have an official from the usgs, they keep for joining us. what can you tell us? have much good evening. >> we had two different earthquakes that occur, all we had the 4.0 magnitude that was followed with what seemed to be an aftershock that registered as a 3.9 magnitude. at this particular point we do not have any reports of damage. this is not the type of earthquake that we would expect to see damage with. >>pam: did both of these happen on the hayward fault? is it unusual to have an aftershock this late after? many people felt that this earthquake felt stronger than the first. >> it depends on where you're getting the reports, how close you were to the source of the earthquake. sometimes people are closer or farther away from the epicenter. >>pam: why did usgs downgrade this second earthquake to hit 3.9 magnitude? >> what happens is, when you get an earthquake, we're working on a response mode. we tried to give you information as quickly as possible, some people use automatic locations to sense the magnitude. later on, a seismologist will go in and oversee the data. sometimes if the change is significant enough, the earth quake gets downgraded. >>pam: what can you tell us about the depth of this earthquake? and what is the proximity to the first earthquake? >> they are very close together in terms of location. 1 earthquake is 8.2 km in debt. the other earthquake is just over 9 km in death.--depth. they seem to have come from the same source in the hayward fault. >>pam: should we anticipate that there could be other earthquakes as the evening will salon? >> that is always a possibility. >>pam: we spoke with an expert at usgs earlier today who said these earthquakes in this mid range are good reminders for people to be prepared. what do you have to say to add to that? >> i would agree. that is the message we have been sending to people. >>pam: back on the phone with us is catherine heenan. >>catherine: earlier this afternoon with the first earthquake, i was in the newsroom. it was interesting to be in the restaurant this time. >>pam: kathryn was here in the station when the earthquake hit earlier this afternoon. the one that we felt a few moments ago was an aftershock. both of them on the hayward fault. that last one was 6 mi. deep, just a bit deeper than the first earthquake. kiberlee sakamoto has more information for us. >>kimberlee: i have been keeping an eye on facebook comments, many viewers are saying that this jolt felt stronger than the first one. >>kimberlee: here is what one person had to say on twitter. >>kimberlee: here is what another person had to say. >>kimberlee: look at what this person said. >>kimberlee: here is that one more. >>kimberlee: lastly, this is a final comment. >>kimberlee: today was the california shake out, people talking about earthquake prepared this. this is another reminder that we live in earthquake country and need to be ready for the next big one or the next shaking that comes. visit the kron4 facebook fan page, leave your comments or e- mail us. >>pam: on the phone with us is surely, a viewer in concord, you were in the east bay, you are closer to the fault where all this happened, what did you feel? >>caller: a big shake. it was a jolt and then a shake. my windows were shaking and closet doors were shaking. we are ok. >>pam: nothing broken? >>caller: nothing. we did not feel the one earlier today, but we felt this one, it feels stronger than a 3.9 magnitude. >>pam: that was our reaction as well. everyone is ok, just a little shaken up. >>pam: officials will tell you over and over again, use these opportunities to try and educate your family and be prepared for when an earthquake hits the bay area. on the phone with us now, adriana in san ramon. what did it feel like they're? caller the first one i thought this afternoon, nothing really shook. it was just a big blowoom. this one felt bigger. >>pam: for you, this second earthquake was a jolting? how would you compare your own reaction? caller it startled me when it happened, obviously. this one was longer than the first one, i thought. >>pam: this earthquake is actually an aftershock which is surprising to us. the earth quake earlier today was a 4.0 magnitude earthquake that hit on the hayward fault. at 8:16 p.m. will were jolted by what is now a 3.9 magnitude earthquake. >>jaqueline: they're, you can see the location of the earthquake, very close to the other ones. people are saying that this felt stronger than a 3.9 magnitude. these jilting earthquakes can be a smaller earthquake, it is the rolling earthquakes that cause more damage and the greater magnitude. we have received a few pictures from people. not a lot of damage is associated with earthquakes of this magnitude. we have seen only relatively minor damage. the ruling earthquakes tend to cause more damage. >>pam: vivian is on the phone from antioch. tell us what it was like there. >> i was laying in bed and all the sudden i felt a shake. i thought, is that another earthquake? i've looked at the clock and i saw the time. i did not feel the one earlier. i was out picking up my granddaughter, i did not know about that until i turned all that is. this one really shook. >>pam: hearing people's reaction to the second earthquake is interesting. people seem to be more alarmed at the second earthquake and this is an aftershock. have you spoken with other people in the neighborhood who feel differently? >> i have not even gone outside. >>pam: vivian, take a calling. we are going to check in with the usgs again, walter lee is standing by to help fill in some of the blanks. many people are saying that this earthquake seem to strong oregon the first one this afternoon. >> i would agree with people who called it, this earthquake gave more of a sharp jolt. it was more receivable. perhaps this quake was more shallow. the earth quake earlier was about 6 mi. deep. perhaps this one was a shallow depth. the magnitude was about the same. >>pam: is it pretty standard that the after shock would be so close in magnitude? >> this is an unusual location. this is a cluster of earthquakes we have been observing for over 40 years. there have been dozens of earthquakes over the last 40 years. it is unusual to have this size of a cluster, not extraordinary, but slightly unusual. we are not too surprised that there was a second event for this particular region. >>caller: as a layman, what do you mean by an unusual cluster? >> the hayward fault extends about 70-80 mi.. much of the hayward fault in the east bay is sliding. it is moving steadily, this is one of the patches where it is strong and resists the sliding motion. this strong location of the fault is where we get these earthquakes. an earthquake is the breaking of the earth's crust. it breaks suddenly during these events. we have our eyes of this location, we have known about it for a long time. i am not surprised that we had to events to date. >>pam: saw four people were wondering if we should expect more as the night goes on, what would you tell them? >> there is a possibility of there being another assault aftershock at this same location. we have had two of them in the last six hours. most likely, if there were another earthquake at this location, it would most likely be a lower magnitude. some people will feel that, and now we are all sensitive, on the edge of our chair waiting for the next earthquake. it would not be alarming or unusual if another event occurred with a lower magnitude. >>pam: in light of the fact that we have a captive audience, what is your advice to those people who have not made the emergency plans fos? >> someone knocked on the door twice today and give us a warning that if we have not made a family plan and got a flashlight and the thought about food in it so on, now is the time to do it. everyone is on their cell phone asking friends and loved ones if they felt it. let's not wait for a larger event. >>pam: what kinds of things in addition to gathering food and having flashlights, what other things should families be prepared to do? >> for those people who have not thought about tying down bookcases or heavy objects, flat screen televisions and so on, things that could hurt you if they fell on you, it's about going to the hardware store in and getting some of those tie downs and things like that. common sense preparations. i think everyone knows what they have a situation that is not good like a water heater that is not strapped to the wall into those kind of precautions. the red cross has a wonderful web page with advice. >>pam: one last question, we have been talking in california into the bay area about the big one. what is the latest prognostication on when that might happen? >> the most likely earth quake to occur in the bay area would be all that hayward faults in the east bay. we do know that there was a magnitude seven in 1868 and the hayward fault produces these kinds of earthquakes on a regular basis. we know of nine of them. for us in the bay area, we need to be prepared for a magnitude 6.5-7 from the hayward fault. we can prepare for that kind of for a quick it would take precautions. in terms of the state, the second area that i will highlight is the southern san andreas fault near, springs and south of los angeles. we have the finger on the polls of two areas in the state. >>pam: thank you for your time on this very busy day for the usgs. >> you are welcome. >>pam: use this opportunity to get a family clan together and figure out if people are in different places how you will contact one another to let everyone know that they are ok. did your medications set aside as anything in the forehead >>pam: grant lodes is in the newsroom with more. >>grant: we're getting pictures flooding into the newsroom. kimberly is monitoring everything on the face of. this comes from michelle kaufman. she lives in berkeley get she says that all of these things, sir pillboxes, trash that box and other things fell off of her shellf >>pam: what was that like for you? >>grant: i thought that this was the coolest they never, this is my first earthquake. that was in the newsroom for birth earthquakes. of the earth quake earlier the better. outfits >>grant: it is an experience unlike any other. it is a real.--is surreal. i am taking the advice to get prepared. i did not have batteries or multiple flashlights. it is a good lesson to all of us that the big one could be around the corner. these moderate-small earthquakes serve as excellent reminders. >>pam: thank you for giving us your experience be here in california if. bart and commuter traffic is very important. we have jim allison all the line from bart to give us an update. >> the update is, what we are doing truck inspections right now. so far we do not see any damage or injuries. >>pam: for you guys, this is twice in one day that you had to send out crews. is this unusual? >> this is actually the third time today. >>pam: bart is experiencing a 15 minute delays. after an earthquake, bart inspects the tracks. you are looking at 15 minute delays right now. so far, it looks as though everything is ok. >>jaqueline: this earthquake has been downgraded once again. the usgs is citing this as a bad attitude 2.33.8 . here in the studio, it certainly felt like a strong jolt. this one felt pretty strong and it was quick. we have seen quite a few pictures and heard a few stories of things falling off of shelves, but no significant damage. >>pam: we are going back to the newsroom. >>grant: i am starting the internet to your people are saying. it looks like paul simon is a plane tonight at the greek theater in berkeley. people are saying on the web site, for several thousand in the greek theatre the earth quake struck 12 minutes before paul simon took the stage. the crowd was cheering. certainly not severe enough to be overly concerned, in a social situation, it could be a moment to come together on. >>pam: we encourage any of you in the viewing audience to send us any photographs or videos that you have of any damage from the earthquake. breakingnews@kron4.com. >>pam: on the phone with us now, a viewer from the san jose. as >> i sell the building kind of a move away from its foundation. i have been through earthquakes before. this one was pretty hard. i do not believe it was only 3.8. >>pam: did you feel the earthquake earlier this after did? >> earlier this afternoon i was at work in the livermore. >>pam: he did not feel the earlier earthquake in livermore but york and san jose and felt this one? and my guess. >>pam: was there any damage reported?
