Furious about the the fact that folks stormed onto a School Campus with guns, a shooting and with the intent to do harm. Oakland city Councilmember Loren Taylor says hes frustrated by the continued gun violence in the city but thankful wednesdays shooting hasnt turned deadly. He says 3 of the victims remain in the hospital, but theres progress. The 2 victims who are Critical Condition are now stable and lee. So that is. Comforting Oakland Police say on the 6 people shot to our students. One is a school counselor. Another is a Security Guard into worked at the school, usd carpenter, jason arbuckle. Arbuckle says its a miracle hes alive and was able to go back home on thursday. He says he was installing a trophy display case on the wall at the time of the shooting. We also learned from Council Member taylor that the Security Guard on king estate campus helped save students. The Security Guard you know, hes been on site that he was wounded, shot in the leg and that through acts of heroism and bravery went to, you know, protect others despite being injured and even applying cpr to one of the the victims late thursday evening. Bay area tech posted an update on its social media page saying the Security Guard is staying strong. Meanwhile, little to no information has been released about the other 4 victims, something glenn upshaw senior with Community Organization youth alive says his unusual normally when get situations like this, we do give referrals and were able to meet with victims. Are even were able to identify who may be the shooter was or who the victims are. Well, classes at schools on king estate campus were canceled on thursday and the Oakland Unified School district said theyre going remain canceled today and monday as well. Well, in the wake of another School Shooting in oakland, at least one city Council Member says he is reconsidering the idea of having police on School Grounds back in 2020. You might remember the Oakland Unified SchoolDistrict Board of education disbanded School Police departments, the district now employs whats called culture keepers formally known as Security Guards. They perform a number of tasks, including maintaining order and safety. Yet Councilmember Loren Taylor who told us it may be time for yet another change. My conversation with the staff from the district is to have dedicated officers from the Police Department that are focused on the schools. Theyre ready to respond. So we get that this the Safety Security support without the overhead of an independent department. Well, we first pose that question about School Police after last months shooting and James Madison middle school Council Member saying tahoe said she opposes putting more guns in schools. Councilmember treva reid said that conversation needed to happen with parents. States campus sent 3 of the most seriously injured victims to highland hospital. Now as patients, they become part of a disturbing trend. A skyrocketing number of people being treated for gunshot wounds. You know, were seeing in 2018 were 23 gunshot wounds 2019. 24 so very similar. There was a spike in jumped in 2020 to 40 a month 2021, we saw a 46 month and this year, one that pays to see 44 months for the year. So, you know, really what we said that lee, its not an exaggeration. James jackson is the ceo of Alameda Health system, which has 760 positions on 9 facilities. Highland hospital is the systems highest ranked trauma center. 2018. We 278 gunshot 2019, 283. So again, very comparable. And then the spike in 2020, we saw 478 2021. 547 and were on pace to see similar numbers in 2022. Jackson says what the numbers dont show is the emotional and physical fallout of gunshot wounds. He says recovery can be very complicated. We obviously our business is helping people when they are in need. And when they have these sorts of injuries. But i think we can do to see the woman chan highland hospital. The Alameda Health system has a place we go in your shot, i think woeful understatement of who we are. What we do for this community. And im very interested in doing the work to try to prevent these sorts of injuries. These sorts of harms to the extent possible jackson has said that he hopes by bringing awareness to this issue. Hurricane ian originally this morning, early last yesterday, a weakened to a Tropical Storm as it made its way up the east coast of florida and back out into the atlantic has strengthened, though, now that its been sitting over those warmer waters back to a category one hurricane and set to make a second landfall in South Carolina as we make our way through the day today, as it does so will be making landfall as a category one hurricane and much like the gulf coast of florida, coastal South Carolina is very low lying. Now. Were not expecting the storm surge along the carolinas to be nearly as devastating as what we saw on the coast of florida. But it will come along with an impact of heavy rainfall and also some really strong winds with that right now. Jacksonville starting to calm down as the center of that storm has moved well off shore. As i mentioned, those outer bands now making landfall in the carolinas. That eye wall will be set to be pushing on to a South Carolina most notably later on today. Now where were sitting with winds across florida, still fairly breezy out there, but mostly pretty much done with the storm now. Now its just clean up time for areas like fort myers, as well as cape coral, a gorda. Those other spots that really saw the brunt of the storm, nothing in sight as far as any additional rainfall goes. So thats really good news for them.
