on kron. 4 news at 3. i'm ella sogomonian. our top story is the winter storm that's passing through the bay area today and bringing with it snow and rain from the sierra to the los gatos area. this along with numerous road closures and power outages. so kron four's checking this weather as we head into a cold and wet weekend with a brief break. kron 4 meteorologist kyla grogan is here with your forecast. cuyler. what are we seeing out there? hey well, we are catching a little break in spots right now. i want to talk about some of the snow that we've already gotten. these are some of the preliminary reports mount hamilton reporting. >> 14 inches of snow, 11 in los gatos. get calistoga about 9 inches. 6 in cloverdale orinda 3 inches in campfield about an inch and a half. obviously this is an inclusive list and we're still adding to it in the case of mount hamilton. some of the storm reports, you know, we're used to seeing all these in the sierra but to see them all around the bay area to it's been a pretty fascinating to watch in just a show you a few of them where, you know, snow was reported. you can see 3 inches here in woodside that came in at about 1 o'clock today. but also a lot of reports earlier this morning like this, where we talked about trees down and power lines near boulder creek, and that was causing problems. they think you have, you know, from some of the wind damage. and then if we go straight up to the north, you can see in places like glen ellen, where they got about 4 inches of snow today, a social media reported trees meeting to fall overnight last night. and a lot of that had to do with kind of the heavy, wet snow that was bringing some of those down. now. happy to say that things are looking much better now, as you can see, a bulk of this system has moved away from us now, that doesn't mean that we don't still have some scattered showers out there in the possibility in the overnight for some of that cooler air to roll in again. in fact, we have a little lightning and hail in san francisco not too long ago around the noontime hour. still seeing some of that rain really through santa rosa and healdsburg as we head down to the santa cruz mountains where we had so much trouble this morning. they're getting a little bit of clearing, but mount hamilton, the snow machine is still on there, as you can see. and that will continue as we go throughout the night tonight, the bigger picture shows you this low pressure system now sitting right off the coast. and now a lot of this action training into southern and central california. i'll be back in just a little bit. we'll talk a little bit more about what we can expect for the end of this and what your weekend looks like for now. send it back to the desk. thanks so much. kyla. happening now. thousands of people are still without power around the bay area. >> you're taking a live look at pg e's outage map. the areas that we're seeing, the biggest challenges are actually lasalle tosa campbell, mo rocca and danville. and you can see that there's one bread triangle up in the north bay. so that is the most customers that are without power. definitely more than 5,000 there. so the orange you see on your map is between 505,000 customers. the last numbers that we saw from pg and e's about 700 customers in the san francisco area lost power and along the peninsula about 1000 and more than 3,000 in the north bay. speaking of the north bay, people in calistoga were in the dark for nearly 9 hours today. the power went out at around 3 o'clock this morning and wasn't restored until noon kron four's. rob nesbitt joins us live from calistoga. and what of people people been dealing with out there? >> the good news is that the power's back on here in town. but many businesses as you're walking down. >> the main streets here in the city, they're staying closed because they missed out on those morning hours when it comes to business. snow is common in the mountain ranges around town. but it's in the valley that it's not common and it really affected things here in town. i want to show you some video of what i saw throughout the day. you can see cars piled with snow, power outages for them in their homes and businesses. the majority of town and school was canceled. not not often. students have a snow day in napa county. the concern is that the popular hotels known for their spas and resorts in the areas. we'll get a lot of people canceling their travel plans for the weekend because of this weather. i talked with mayor donald williams about the city's generators that pg and e set up to kick on when they have to shut off power because of wildfires in the summer and the fall. it's more common. the mayor says those generators that run on diesel are able to be used during regular power outages. like the experience today. but that could change in the near future. >> the city is considering a an alternative energy and not using diesel power, but a different source which has not been confirmed yet at any it out comes into play. we most likely would have power in the event of lockout any time of year. >> i reached out to pga knee earlier today to find out when power might be restored here. it's back on now. and they told me then that pg e had around 450 crew members out through their entire service area working to do just that, get the lights back on in the power. back on reporting live in calistoga. i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news. >> thanks so much for that report from. >> and the east bay, anybody who looked up at mount diablo today probably saw some snow on the mountainside. kron four's charles clifford gives us a closer look. >> well, here on mount diablo, there is snow on the mountain side at the moment. i'm standing about halfway to the summit. we can just see thick blankets of snow across a large portions of mount diablo. overnight, the wind and the rain knocked over a lot of old oak trees that are blocking the roadway. there's also very slick conditions toward the summit. so state parks has closed the entrances, including the one at the northern end, the north gate entrance. there's a lot of folks trying to get up here on friday to check out the snow. they are being turned around at least as of midday. and i talked to one guy who says he comes up here every time it snows to hike around. >> last couple times a day coming walked in the snow. they let road open up to the brink stage. so from there you up so i sign. coming up, a whole is ready, but no. >> now i've also seen a pg e crews coming in here presumably to affix any power outages and clear trees. we've got a state park screws up here, making sure it's safe before they reopen the park, which they're hoping to do at some point on friday afternoon. but for now on mount diablo, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> shutdown highway 29 in northern napa county. that's after reports of a string of spinouts there. the snowfall has been heavy. so the closure stretches from tubs lane near calistoga to bradford road in lee county. no word on when the road will be reopened. highway 17 is still shut down because of hazardous road conditions out there to both directions are closed because of downed trees and debris. drivers actually had to be rescued and then brought back to areas with less icy conditions because they ended up stranded closer to the summit. we saw blizzard-like conditions overnight, which caused cars to spin out there, too. >> that was about 10 minutes up on the highway before i just saw snow. and then the road was frozen. a big rig was spilling out in front one around him i was stuck in the snow and i've been there for hours and entry started dropping right in front of my truck. and i just what your trees dropping all around the block right in the road. the 4 journalists came and rescued me. >> driver was not able to go back to get his car. instead, he had to wait it out at a hotel nearby and people are being warned not to try to take the back roads unless it's safer to do so. heavy snowfall overnight cause slick road conditions in cloverdale. that's about a half hour away from santa rosa. >> kron four's michael thomas reports. >> snow has been coming down since early this morning. leaving people in cloverdale abul shocked and excited and kids just extremely happy because this is now a snow day. this is snowfall on northbound highway 101, at 5 o'clock this morning by 06:00am chunks of it were piled up everywhere with people like the nelson family waking up to a winter wonderland. >> i didn't believe it for samara. like there's going to be snow. i was like now it's to be and i woke up this morning. i was like which it's snowing and they weren't the only ones by 07:00am the snow falling had gotten even heavier. >> and the power was going in and out this morning, we woke up and it looked so it's a little crazy. we lost power for little bit. they kicked on were able to get the starbucks in the snowfall was so intense. the cloverdale schools announced it was officially a snow day with people happier than can be. >> first for snow day for the kids. first snowball snow angel for her. >> it's now i can't school >> well, it is fun to play in the snow. officials say remember to be safe, give yourself extra time on the road, drive slower and always keep your distance from that car ahead of you. as you can see, the roads here still remain very slick. and officials say just remember to use caution and that snow is still piled up in different areas as to how much we got. well, that's still up for debate as we get more information from officials will continue to keep you updated. but that is the very latest here in cloverdale. and michael thomas, i will send it back to the >> thanks so much, michael. and join us online as we track the storm, including road closures and power outages in your area. you can do that by scanning this qr code on your screen. coming up on this hour of kron, 4 news, the snow caused a major backup in livermore this morning. we're going to see how drivers are faring now. plus, it's been one year if you can imagine since russia began its invasion of ukraine. >> we'll take a look at how the u.s. plans to hold moscow accountable. but first, we'll check in with the sierra snow lab in a live interview just to see how much snow has fallen there and how much more is in store. welcome back. snow and slick pavement caused a major backup in the livermore hills this morning. >> nearly a dozen cars got stuck in the snow and then that resulted in some backed up traffic as kron four's. philippe reports. alameda county firefighters had to help dig them out. >> at times blocking the road with his truck near his house low spending part of his late friday morning, telling drivers passing through the california highway patrol's roadblock on patterson pass road in livermore to use another route to get to their destination by lily was spent. there are some people that you can come through here because it's not safe to do in terms of snow. >> hours earlier, just before 5 o'clock in the morning to alameda county fire engine companies responded to the patterson passed summit. we're up to 10 cars got stuck in the snow. the fire crews used shovels to help dig them out. the fire department says it caused a backup of more than 100 cars. when i was leaving my house, i was on my show was the vehicle safety vehicles coming down the hill. >> and that was just say, you say about their has lived in livermore since he was 12 years old and can only remember it's snowing 3 other times. he says when it does fall, the last place you want to be behind the wheel is on the back room says and usual. yeah, we're going to come here. but if it's unsafe. but people say stay home in pictures on facebook and with the fire department posted on its page tells the story stay away or you might get stuck. >> the road remaining closed through the early afternoon in livermore, philippe djegal all kron 4 days. >> and it looks like a winter wonderland near soda springs. today. we got some video shared thursday by the berkeley snow lab and they actually recorded 16 and a half inches of snow in the last 24 hours. they're expecting another 3 to 4 feet of snow by saturday morning. joining us now to talk about this fresh layer of snow is lead scientist and manager of the central sierra snow lab at uc berkeley. doctor andrew schwartz, thanks for joining us. >> thank you for me so where we asked the season so far. we're looking great so far this for a little bit of reference our windows here on the second floor of the building. and we have boards on and make sure that the snow doesn't shatter and that's because we average about 30 feet of snow per year. and so far this year we've had both our snow pack and our water moving forward into the spring are looking very good. >> cass tech well, is this unusual more than 16 inches in 24 hours? >> it's not unusual up at these higher elevations. occasionally will see even a 2 to 3 year 3 and a half feet in 24 but it's kind of this relentless storm track. that is a little bit unusual because we're seeing just continual amounts of snow come in and up. >> and when was the last time that we saw something like this happen? >> realistically was in early january. we had those big atmospheric rivers come and deposit a lot of rain. lot of snow. and so we're seeing it again now, which is exactly what we wanted after that wonderful precipitation period. and then fingers crossed. it looks like it could be continuing for several weeks. >> what can we expect next? >> well, we're looking at anywhere from another 4 to 6 feet of snow potentially up here over the next week here at the snow lab. and throughout this hearing realistically. so we could be looking at plenty more snow to come. and that will only help us to kind of hot out of this drought that we've been it. >> well, thank you so much, doctor shorts for joining us from the uc berkeley snow ab. i hope that everybody stay safe out there and it picture of an overturned car. not something we want to see. >> thank you so much for having me. take care. >> you heard him right? this guy ski in palo alto. this video was taken yesterday morning near skyline boulevard and portela heights road. as you can see, the snow came down so hard enough to cover the trees, grass and what once was a walkway that guys actually skiing on super kind bergen here to talk about this mild weather we've been first of all, i love that the has something you never thought you'd hear right here. we are with snow in places. you just don't expect it. >> here's one place. we do expect it when we do get lower elevations, snow, mount diablo. and this is from one of our viewers, debbie, who sent this in. our weather app. thank you for sending that in. debbie. what a gorgeous view you have today. just beautiful out there. notice all the green as well. >> as you can see, you know, as we've had so much precipitation this season, it's been pretty nice. let's talk about how much rain we got. we talked about snow a few moments ago. so >> i want to show you they can feel we've got 1.0, 6, 5 inches of rain. 1.4, 6 in mill valley. fremont just about the same their richmond. 1.4, 3, 1.2 in san francisco and san jose. yeah. just under an inch right about 8 tenths of an inch. pretty impressive if it weren't for the snow. we've been talking all about that rain all day today. it's all courtesy of this low pressure system that's been dragging all this moisture in. now. you can see as i zoom in here where we're starting to lighten up. but of course, down in central and southern california. now they're getting all of the main action. but that doesn't mean that were entirely done yet because this is that counter clockwise circulation so does continue to drag some of that moisture. and as that system does get to the south of us eventually. but tonight, yeah, we could still see some more snow in places like mount hamilton, where you can see right now we've got some snow happening and we could still see some all across the bay. so you can kind of let your guard down. there could be those scattered showers. in fact, we have lightning, as you can see the last couple of hours that roll through san francisco, which now is sitting in some sunshine. meanwhile, of the north bay, you can see up in cloverdale just to the east of cloverdale. we've got some snow happening right now, too. so it's still going on. that's why you see this big fluffy counts. but what a beautiful view as we take a look here now as you're getting some clearing in san francisco, temperatures have been cool today in the 40's. so it's been one of those days yet. again, i want to show you in future cast here as we go through. there's tonight. it isn't until we get into tomorrow. there's the overnight. so again, we could still see some activity. and then as we get into tomorrow, there's your saturday afternoon. that's where the clearing is and that's where the break is. take a look at your extended forecast and you can see that we do have more rain expected on sunday and that will stick with us monday and tuesday. but then we warm up and clear out a little bit in the latter half of the week. so just a deep breath. saturday is your day to get those errands done before. we've got some sunday rain coming our way. it looks like by noon we'll all be dealing with some showers on sunday. back to you noted. thank you so much, kyla. still ahead on this hour of kron, 4 news. >> all of you are spending this snow day down on the peninsula of all places. but first, target is making a huge e-commerce investment how it might benefit the hours because of snow, fallen trees and downed power lines. so it's going to be slow moving for drivers while the back of clears up. but chp and caltrans are urging people to take it nice and slow. and this is video from chp truckee of when i 80st reopened to drivers at around 10, 40 this morning. as you can see, there were still essentially white out conditions. chp is advising people to not make that trip up to tahoe. but if you must go take your time, drive slow and keep your distance between cars. families are taking advantage of the snow and let's come some and recorded this video of his kids sledding down a snowy hill in their neighborhood. that's not a common sight. and there is a freeze warning in effect in los gatos until tomorrow morning. usually you are unable to go snowboarding at vineyards of napa county. that's not how it happens. but that's exactly what winemaker bobby, closer from cade the state did. so this is an elevation of about 1800 feet. and we're told that they and they bring vineyards are can stone and neal family vineyards todd anywhere from 10 to 12 inches of snow overnight. so it's perfect for snowboarding or skiing and that so much for making wine. haha. let's take a closer look at your forecast. here's a live look outside. quite the scenic shot of the golden gate bridge looking up toward the north bay. we have the marina, the presidio, their insight as well. kyla grogan is here in the weather center with those details. kyla. yeah, i want to talk a little bit about tahoe, but first of all, i have to say that's really funny, snowboarding, through vineyard things you didn't think you see today. also, this is when are usually show the donner summit camera. but this is what it looks like. it is entirely covered with so that is to say. >> if it's me, even though 80 is open now, i'm not getting on it because this is what it looks like right now. you can see both 80 50 >> are involved. it's a pretty heavy snow. the darker blues are kind of where the heavier snow is. so he's lined up a little bit, but we're not going to be done with this until at least tomorrow morning. as you can see, this big low pressure system is very handily funneling all of that moisture right into the sierra. and that's a good thing. but maybe not such a good thing. if you're on the roads right now. here's snow in the last 24 hours at some of our resort area. so 28 inches 20 in palisades tahoe, kirkwood about 17 north star, 17, 14 and soda springs. heavenly about 7. and that's just the last 24 hours. now, just to show you futurecast where the break is, if you do want to head up to tahoe take you through the night, go into tomorrow morning. this is when things start to lighten up, right? so that's about 9.30, tomorrow morning. and you do ok throughout the day tomorrow. but then they've got another system coming their way as we get into sunday as well. so this is sunday afternoon. and here comes the snow again. so that break for you would be saturday morning throughout kind of the saturday day time frame and then i call it quits against missouri, looking at a lot more snow. and this is, by the way, only through monday. that system is going to last longer than that. but you can see it's going to be plenty of snow. so that is why they do have their winter storm warnings. winter weather advisories up. also, though, as we go into the weekend, the area and the dark red there that is an avalanche warning. so that is another thing that they're contending with. we had all that heavy snow that comes down. so that is just to say that right now you don't see a lot of people out here dive in great there's a time to ski and there's a time to kind of wait it out. and we're kind of in that. wait it out space right now. so we look at the next couple of days. snow showers on saturday. i think that's going to be best opportunity if you want to try and get up to the mountains. and then sunday monday, it's going to be very cold and very snowy. so a look here at our system that, you know, as i mentioned, still all that snow happening in the sierra, but also a lot of this. now, his transfer down to southern california. and we come back in a little bit. i'm gonna show you what's happening down there. and actually the blizzard warning and some of the la and ventura county mountains. so we will talk about that. back to you. so strange. thank you so much, kyra. and as the state grapples with how to address the opioid crisis, some lawmakers say that more must be done. >> to make sure californians have access to the the national weather service said that a record low temperature of 41 degrees was recorded at lax. heavy snow and rain are also slamming. so then california today, the grapevine portion of i-5 has been shut down for hours because of heavy snow. >> ice and poor visibility. that video from caltrans. the agency says that they've recorded more than a foot of snow that some of the highest elevations. there's no word yet on when the grapevine will reopen any time soon. i had imagined that this is even happening right now. well, to the great find does close when they get snow this year. that's not unusual that on this beach that's wacky. i look at la. i've never seen but i will tell you that they are going to be dealing with this like we did last night. >> this is their big night. take a look. now you can see where all of this is feeding all that moisture right into southern california. so they're getting rain in la and santa barbara. and then you can heavier rain kind of heading further inland. that is why in the la county and ventura county mountains, unusually they are under a blizzard warning from now through tomorrow, expecting snow to be measured in feet to 5 feet above 4,000 feet. you get even higher than that. those numbers go up. so it's going to be a wild ride for southern california. we wish them well, of course, with all of the snow that we just got, we we can know what they're going through right? 30 degrees right now in big bear. so plenty cold there. 53 in la 47 in fresno and we've had a cool day around the bay mountain dew sitting at 50 degrees. but i haven't had a whole lot of 50's on the map today. you can see fremont right now 50 of as well. but san francisco just at 45 degrees. so here is a look at that system again. and as we zoom in, you can see where these really heavy showers are falling right now. there's a little bit of snow here. but then right along i-5, you can see between lost hills in kettleman city, just an absolute downpour happening. they're bringing it back to the day. we are getting less rate. so this still being dragged in and that counter clockwise circulation. but it will ultimately track to the south. but in the meantime, we still have a few scattered showers that could pop up and even a little snow overnight. wind is calm down, though. boy, this is nice. 12 miles per hour. we'll take it. not bad at all. we do have cold temperatures coming in tonight. again, look out for the freeze warning in the north bay, parts of santa cruz mountains and also parts of santa clara county in the south bay. there's temperatures to drop below freezing lighter blue. that's your frost advisory. we're expecting like 32 to 37 degrees. not much rain left in this for the rest of today, but here's the thing. we've got more rain coming next week, sunday through tuesday. we're looking at much more rain coming over an inch their site and a half in some spots. so here's just future cast to show you how this plays out. this is overnight. we've got a little rain. we've got a little snow. we'll get into tomorrow. there's our break. but that's not that long lived because here come sunday morning, a little more rain. another break overnight sunday and then we're back in it monday morning. it's a lot of rain, but that's what is happening in our forecast friend. so here we go. we're going to get break on saturday. get those errands done sunday. we've got more rain coming in and it sticks with us monday into tuesday. and then a little bit of a warm-up and maybe a little bit of clearing as we head into the latter part of next week. oh, boy, the weather's been busy are going to stay that way. l a what they she's got her work cut out for this week. all right. the peninsula got hit with a lot of snow as we've been talking about. >> and kron four's haaziq madyun shows us the sights. >> it is snowing in the hills above san mateo county and the town of woodside. >> i just show up here to see the snow. what do you i like it. >> as you can see, he is not alone. these folks pulled over here on skyline boulevard to get in a little snow ball fight. you have to do that. jet goldin and his partner to call calendar drove up from san carlos to take a little stroll through the snow. so how fun is it? >> fun it slip. even it's fun. yeah, i like it a a fan from arizona. so snow is already, you know, from where i'm from. it's a scarcity. so it's a scarcity here, too. but i love it. of course he does. there are so many picture postcard images of snow on the ground. >> on the rooftops of homes, cars, snow and the caps of tree stumps. tree limbs more than a powder to make huge snowballs. here you see a procession of caltrans work vehicles followed by the chp driving on skyline, making sure the roads are clear for motorists in the hills. all very unusual for folks who live in san mateo very strained definitely not typical this area at all. you know, never. >> in all the winters expend, hear what i ever have thought it would snowed. it's it's just so far out of the realm expectations. so your thoughts about my first-ever snowman. >> wonderful. i think he's missing a neck, their work in progress. he's only got one but you only really need one. i do appreciate the snow, i guess so. there you go. actually, i came across these 2 when i was in the middle of putting my snowman together. >> here is the finished product. you be the judge and what side haaziq madyun kron. 4 news. but some >> up next, we're not the only ones enjoying the snow today. some animals are taking part in the >> so check this out. the animal spent the day pouncing around the zoo. you can imagine that's the first time they were seeing snow for some of them. the san diego zoo. we are going to be kind of say goodbye to our snow, at least for a little bit. we could see a little bit in the overnight hours. as we zoom out here. you can see the system drying all of that weather into southern california where animals were going. what's going on but some of it we could see tonight as we get into the evening, we see a little bit of a back end of the system. but the bigger story here is take a look at your forecast. we've got a little bit of a break on saturday. more rain coming our way as we get into sunday. so it looks like by sunday about, you know, 11:00am or so we're all going to dealing with some rain. we get a little bit of a break sunday night into monday and then we're back at it again with more rain on monday and tuesday. but i draw your eye down here. yes, let's take a look at wednesday, thursday and friday of next week. notice temperatures are starting to go up a bit. we get into thursday friday. we've got this partly cloudy skies. but then we're talking highs kind of in the mid 50's getting back to where we should be more normally. but for the rest of the night tonight, be aware that we could have a couple of scattered showers out there. so i would still take the umbrella with you just in case or maybe the jacket, right, to make sure that you're prepared. if you get caught in one of these little downpours that could happen on the backside of the system. but we'll get some clearing tomorrow. so la, if you have errands to run on your saturday, i think it's going to be ok to do that. but unfortunately, if you are looking to have a sunday out and about the rain could unfortunately put a little bit of a damper in that plan. so that is your weather, and i think my friend l is microphone may not be working. my correct? i think it's back on its back on, ok, good that i was going to bring you in here and say hope you have some weekend plans as we head towards the weekend. anything on tap for you? you know, i'm going to take your advice and definitely try to do fun on saturday. thank you so much to cover grogan for the weather. >> that's it for us here on kron. 4 news at 03:00am ella sogomonian. thank you so much for joining us and have a wonderful
