immune. from this type of epidemic. i want to recognize the victims along with the families and friends who lost loved ones. to this epidemic of gun violence. do department is investigating a targeted >> and to thank you so chief allison for that. i also want make sure that i introduce him bring up to the mic. i'm captain jones. you know, it is in oakland since 2012, it has been really, really a factor for us and allowed us to cut shootings and homicides by over 50% since we've been using this strategy. so like chief allison said, this incident that occurred last night. we we suspected there may be a gang connection. so seems far be coordinating the activities of the oakland police department and our response to this particular incident. unfortunately, we do have a lot of experience in dealing with these put these kinds of incidents. and so the coordination and the communication between the police department, the community and the department of department prevention, the structures in place for us all to work together and come up with strategies that work. the biggest threat to us right now is retaliatory shootings. the group's going back and forth. we continue to see violence that will stem from this particular incident. so at the police department will be working with everybody to community department of violence prevention. our plan will be laser-focused on the specific people to specific groups that are involved in this particular incident last night. it will bring every resource that we have to bear within the city to make sure that we can the back and forth for retaliation between the individuals were involved in incident last night. so we're going to do everything that we can. this is a tragedy but we are prepared to respond to this. you know, we've got a lot of experience in dealing with these gang conflicts we just rely on the community and our partners at the v p and i'm sure that will be able to bring some justice and closure to the families for the loss of loved ones and to prevent any fumes from happening in the future. connected to this. thank you. >> thank you so much, captain jones and s as captain jones has stated and also a chief allison. we cannot do this work, solve these crimes without the support of our community. and so i want to make sure that we bring up revenue to meet a howard written to me. is our chair of cease-fire. >> thank you, mayor and everybody here on appear today. my name is ready to lead to davis, how it not been advocate for the cease-fire strategy for over 10 years. the reason why is because gun violence is very personal to me. a lot of my only brother who was 8 years. my junior some years ago and the number of other family members talking about this incident happened 4 blocks from my home. if i had stopped as that plan. but my favorite thai restaurant, 60 at the i could have been caught in the a ray of bullets that was happening at that time. but i was not. the first thing idea when i heard about is i had to locate my children because that is a neighborhood snacks blocked. we frequent that corn. this is personal to me. this is about saving the lives of young black and brown men, especially in the city of oakland. this should be personal for you. this should be personal for each and every one of you. we need to join forces. we need to be a community that is united. it's saving the lives of other oakland to us. and stopping gun violence in beautiful, wonderful special city. i asked everybody here to join in with the partnership will see spot faith in action. vp highland hospital, community youth organizations opd probation. we all come together. >> because our north star is to save lives in this city. that should be the mission of each and everyaone of you. so please, please. first of all. but each and every one of those victims and their families, the businesses in your prayers. we need to come together and we need action to stop this violence. thank you very much. thank you so much, to how are excuse me? she is actually a director of ceasefire. >> i also want to make sure that we get an opportunity to the actual chair of cease-fire, a possibility he's here. he works as a volunteer working closely with the city as well, too. and again, once again, we cannot do this hard work on our own. our children deserves more deserves better. and this is why we have work hand in glove to city, along with the community to ensure that we have the resources, the correct information to make sure that we go after the people who is committing the gun violence to bring them to justice. a pastor dixon, if you may say a few words. >> let me just be straight and direct to the point. can i do this? captain jones can come stand next to me for a second. we've been knocking on doors now for. for some years, not to take anybody to jail but to offer services and things that people need. today. i'm going to be very transparent. people that are thinking about retaliating. people that thinking about going back to get revenge before you do that. please call 5, 1, 0, 430-1800. give me a call this break. brit. let's talk about how we can help you change your mind. change your thought. that we may help you today. it's time out for all this violence. i'm asking for every faith institution. let's get together. this help our brothers. this helped them see a different way. a young man want time told me. as the u.s. since 25 years to life. if i met more people like you, probably wouldn't be here. let's make that true today. >> thank you. and i do want to get opportunity to the council member this incident happened and that's council member kevin jenkins council member jenkins. thank you, mayor it out. >> it's with a heavy heart that i stand here before you. discussed it. the community is outraged. we're discussed it. no young person. should it. have to lose their life like this. every young person should be able to reach their fullest potential. borrows life was stolen from there's deep trauma that is seeded in our community because of the gun violence that is that plagues our community. apologize to the students that fromm's martial arts that have to deal with this trauma knowing that someone was shot in your community and that for a moment in time that you were on site. every child should be aafe here in oakland. every single child should be safe. every single young adults should be able to reach their fullest potential. and i'm just sick and tired. a black and brown men being killed in our streets being killed. sorry to the parents that have to deal with this. the struggles with this. but oakland is a resilient city and together as we're talking about would cease fire if we all come together, we can defeat gun violence in our city. thank you, mayor >> and so at this point, we'll open for regards to sept this subject matter. please go and raise your hand and i will call upon you in the right person from standing up here right next to me, we'll come up to answer your questions. like we're out is i also video out >> thank you for the question. we are reviewing several pieces of we're not prepared to push at this time any of the leads they're so see what that evidence. but we are we have a lot of information that to sift through what i can say is, as i mentioned earlier, there were multiple shooters. but at this point in we're just trying to gather that formulate are next steps in the investigation. >> talk to >> word is that there's a lot of casings at the scene. so we're and video. so we're trying to work through that. that evidence piece to get a firm number on on what we have. we know it's more than one. >> look, >> we saw various caliber casings out we we >> handgun casings are low caliber casings as well as what appears to be replications. >> so just to clarify, you game is add to your >> we have a good sense of involved parties as far as groups and gangs were not prepared to release time. but we do i think, saw leads to go forward in this case. what was the name for a they? >> when their >> i think, you know, i want to speculate too much. you know, there is a group there. we know some were affiliated with the music video somewhere in the course of their day-to-day activities. what the draw was is still going to be under investigation. >> people. >> tragically inner we do experience of a significant number shootings getting a group we have a number of active conflicts, a number of all conflicts that could spark a bit any time. so the ideas we have behind these groups, they're not new conflicts. the things they're always in the potential for violence. so something that we're paying close attention to is one of the reasons why i know with our community pass, pastor dixon and what kim jones was indicating that were so intent on. if you're thinking about retaliating, there's an avenue. there's another path way that's not picking up a firearm. there's a way that we can work together and mediator way through this. and so definitely want to lift up what pastor dixon said and to reach out to prevent any retaliatory shootings. >> and free going how people looking at, you >> that complex can't they're not going to be solved with a gun. it's just doesn't that violence is not an accepted way for any kind of conflict resolution that there's things that could be done through mediation. there's things that could be done just through understanding that we all we are all here together as as humanity and and and taking the life of another person for any reason is not acceptable way of living amongst one another. so for us, our job is to ensure safety to follow up on individuals and tragedies and to know and let the community know and have confidence that we will employ every resource. i know i mention or cease-fire partnerships. we also have strong partnerships with our federal partners and our local partners. and we'll play every measure that we have in our stead that if you do not put the guns down, if you do not engage. and in behaviors that are not associated violence, we will hold you accountable and we will bring you to justice. >> so >> are our direct addresses. anybody that is at risk of gun violence either on the offender side or on the victim's side. i certainly have captain jones going a little bit more detail of our direct communication process. but we if if we think that there's a way to minimize and mitigate violence, we will reach out to those individuals can do to us. jason, for that. so just a follow-up to a chief. alison just said in answer a question that is something that we regularly do with in oakland pastor dixon and routinely drive around and just get out and talk to people on hot spots in various parts of the city. but incidents like this, we always try to identify people who we think prone to violence are prone to being a victim of violence and try to engage them with the message that's tailored towards their specific circumstances that they're going through in that moment. so in the in the coming days, we will be looking to reach out to individuals who may be connected with some of the victims associates of the victims and trying to deliver message of hope, trying to get them to calm down to lower the temperature on on the things that are are going on between the parties involved and try to get them to 2. you know, resolve this thing in a peaceful way so that nobody else go has to go to jail nobody else you have to become a victim of government. what we always feel to realize what captain jones brings. you want side, but there are services that are offered. there's more than just don't stop shooting. there's things that you may need mental help, whatever they may need at that time, we reach out to those that are either on the victim's side, the ones that purple perfect per per teacher. the violence perpetrated the violence. whatever side. so it's not just going on this and stop and you better stop is saying, hey, we have this for you. we have that for you. we have this for you. and that's something that the community needs to know. cease-fire is about holding everybody accountable. and those that might be able to influence. thank you, demeanor, those that might be in florence 70's. we talked to mothers, fathers, brothers, cousins, best friends, were talked to a lot of people. and he's more than just captain jones at the department of violence. prevention plays a big part of that of where they go and they offer the services. and i hope the department of violence prevention accountable. and i hold opd accountable. so 5 are calling for a news conference. you better believe they're not being accountable. >> when >> so we had 5 victims who were struck by gunfire. the additional victims were either victims of the shooting, they were not struck personally but their business was struck. we had one where their business truck, but that individual was not it by gunfire. and then we had another vehicle that was struck by gunfire with one occupant who was struck by gunfire. 2 that were not. and then we had additional 3 who were involved in a collision that were not struck by gunfire. so we had 5 struck by gunfire and then 3 that had complaints of injuries from the collision. >> well, thank you all so much for joining us that will conclude our press conference. thank we've been listening to oakland leaders give a very passionate plea for oakland city. >> community members to put the guns down. it is clear in california. we are not immune to this epidemic of gun violence, especially from what we've seen over the last few days. they were giving an update on a mass shooting that approximately 40 to 50 people were at that location, shooting a music video and that's when gunfire broke out from multiple shooters in various all of the victim self transported themselves to the hospital. 5 people were struck by gunfire. one of them, 18 year-old mario navarro. we learned his identity. he was fatally shot the additional victims range in age from 15 to 63. there were businesses. there were businesses that were struck by gunfire as well as a vehicle struck by bullets. after trying to leave the scene. there was also a crash that happened, which is the 3 additional victims who suffered injuries in a crash. only one person still at the hospital at this hour. oakland police looking into the possibility of gang involvement for they have a good sense of the involved parties, but they would not press further on who those involved parties might be. if you have any video of pd wants to see it, they want to hear from you and they would like for you to give them that footage. we also heard from the head of cease-fire, the ceasefire program. this as the biggest threat now is retaliatory shootings. and so that is where they are focused at this point. but again, the identity of the that, we want to get you a check of your forecast. this is a live look at downtown san francisco this afternoon. come from meteorologist kyla grogan standing by. she's got details on what's going on here and across country. yeah, exactly. beautiful day here, but not the case in parts of the country. we have a very massive system is going to working its way across the country now spotting some tornado warnings, as you can see here down in parts of texas heading into louisiana sets right around houston. and then we've got snow back in oklahoma city. so this is a very powerful, a storm and it is going to track all the way from texas right to new england right through the ohio valley. and that's why you see not only the tornado watches and warnings in the south, but you see winter storm warnings and weather advisories. also as you go right across the country. meanwhile, in california, beautiful day today, we've got our gorgeous high pressure in charge and sunshine is out there as we take a live look outside from the east bay. it is wall-to-wall, blue skies. so a stunning day on tap. we are watching out at the coast because we do still have that risk of rip currents and sneaker waves out there. but other than that, mostly clear skies tonight, chilly inland valleys. and then we do have a slight chance of rain over the weekend. a much cooler forecast once we get past friday. but between now and then as we look future cast, you can see lots of sunshine by friday. we start to see the clouds roll and that's your friday afternoon. still a nice day by saturday. see them increase. and then this will be the shot of rain that we may get this weekend models, not quite an agreement, but even if we do squeeze out a little rain from the system doesn't look like it's going to be a whole lot between maybe a 10th and quarter of an inch. so not a huge impact system but might be a little more rain for us as we head towards the weekend at notice. temperatures while air warming through the week we'll start to ramp down as we get into the weekend. regardless of whether we get that rain in there or not. stay with us, everyone. we'll be right back. of >> welcome back.
