Leave your car at home if youre going to drink. If youre going to drink, designate a sober driver. Reporter thats the bottom line coming from the San FranciscoPolice Department. Sergeant newman says thanksgiving typically results in heavy binge drinking and an increase of impaired drivers leaving bars and parties and then getting behind the wheel, especially patrons who dont feel drunk but are above the blood alcohol level to drive. We see accidents results from buzzed drivers. Reporter check points will be set up across the holidays. The San FranciscoPolice Department is one of many Law Enforcement agencies in a period of maximum enforcement from now to new years day. That means that officers are on the roads looking for intoxicated drivers from alcohol or prescription drugs. So many different alternatives. You can designate a sober driver to drive. You have muni and bart and taxi services. Sergeant newman says to keep your distance from and report any drunk drivers immediately. Just keep an eye out for signs of impairment. Not only is it an infraction to drive with your lights off, its reason for us to pull you over. But a sign that maybe youre not fully aware of your surroundings based on some type of impairment. Reporter across the nation, more than 700 people died in dui related crashes last year. Even if you plan on having one drink, Police Say Stay off the road. But enjoy your holiday. Tonight accident a teenager that was set ablaze on board a transit bus is at home with his family just in time for the holidays. This is video of the boy arriving home. He was finished a threeweek stay in the burn unit at the hospital. Back in early november, he suffered serious burns when police say a 16yearold passenger on the same bus sent the gender neutral teens skirt on fire while sasha slept. Sasha said what color skirt he wanted to wear on the way home. It doesnt change howell express himself. We are hoping that something good will come out of this. That this kind of intolerance will be people will realize that you can wear unusual clotheingand it doesnt mean that you have a right to attack them. The attacker is a 16year old Oakland High School student who is being charged as an adult. The university is taking a lot of heat for the way it has been dealing with the alleged torment of a black student there earlier this month. But an indepth study done years ago shows students of color have been dealing with similar incidents from professors, coaches and other students for many years. Alyssa reed has more. Reporter it took six years of interviewing and research to complete this 100page report about racism on the campus. What is inside are comments from students and faculty about their experiences and suggestions about how the school can address the issues. ;4 g6having a zero toleranc policy for anything that symbolizes an attack on a gender group or sexuality, thing like that, this is bigger than just a blackishu. Reporter word that a black student was being terrorized for three months and him finally reporting it to authorities last week sparked on campus. They wrote the n word on a drier ace board. He fought them off the first time and sustained bruising. But the second time, i guess they finally were able to get it around him. They locked him inside of his dorm room and they broke the lock off the door when they did that. Reporter the silent protest was in part expressing their feeling for too long voices were ignored. The report was completed two years ago. And the school disbanded the Committee Last year. This fall the commission was created. A rep believe thats it represents more ethnic groups across the board. The committee has met once and will meet again next month. A rep says that there are ongoing efforts to address the issues at hand. Were told there are also two task forces targeting African American student success. Were taking a live look outside at a nice quiet san mateo bridge. New tonight at 11 00, prosecutors in Contra Costa County will not file charge charges against the person that sparked a fire that burned more than 3100 acres in the state park back in september. It started in unincorporated clayton where a person was target shooting with a rifle. One of the bullets struck a rock, causing a spark and starting the september 8th fire. The fire prompted the evacuation of close to 75 homes and caused more than four and a half Million Dollars in damage. This Apartment Fire is out tonight but several families have been left without a home. Firefighters say a man set the building on fire and he admitted to it. Jr joan is in alameda tonight and talked with a neighbor of the arson suspect who has lost everything. But the water damage and the smoke and the fire from the ceiling and the walls, its just its taken everything. Reporter kennedy is talking about what her apartment looks like almost 20 hours after it went up in flames. Holes in the roof, black soot everywhere and walls missing. Its a whole another picture now that i can actually see it for myself. First i thought maybe some of the stuff was salvageable, but its not. Reporter her story has been well documented. We talked with her wednesday morning, minutes after she jumped off this balcony to escape the flames. Her neighbor is the man accused of starting the fire. As to why he may have done it, its unclear. But she says he has mental problems and hasnt been taking his medicine. That suspect lived in this apartment right next to her and her son, one that is now destroyed. She says her apartment looks similar to this one. Thesely baskets are all that were salvaged out of the apartment. Right now, she is trying to stay optimistic. I got my album collection that ive been collecting since i was a teenager. Some of it has water damage. But i dont care. Its nostalgic. Reporter all of the apartments were affected by the fire. As bad as everything looks, she is thankful. I love my little apartment. I really did. But its all replaceable. Like i said, we all got out. So were just we will go on from there. San francisco politicians celebrated the lives and service of the two men that forever changed San Francisco. What arose out of those hears of struggle, particularly with the leadership of the mayor and supervisor harvey milk was the beginning of embracing and understanding diversity. Each year glide Memorial Church serves a full thanksgiving dinner with all of the fixings to more than 5,000 people. That includes, hams, turkeys, sides and desserts. Volunteers were busy preparing the feast. For 50 years they have been serving people. He says that thanksgiving is one of his favorite days of the year. Thanksgiving is a day of hope frankly speaking. It should be observed that way. The food of course is number one. I mean, you get that turkyand that gravy and stuffing together and you really have got something going. So thats a great day for us. All of us. No matter where people come from. Its a great day. More than 1,000 turkeys and hams have been donated to glide. And organizers say more volunteers are always welcomed to serve the thanksgiving dinner guests. Not a lot of fog, no low clouds.
