Organizers say the march is the first step of a Global Movement to defend the vital role science plays in our health, safety, economies, and governments. Kron4s jeff peirce was at San Franciscos science march rally today where he spoke to some of the people marching. jeff pierce thousands of marchers in support of the Scientific Community gathered saturday morning in San Francisco to answer the threat they see as the politicizing of what should be established scientific fact. Though some people would ask us to believe differently science is not an idealogy. The threats are to the scientists themselves, having their work questioned, denied their integrity, theyre being called liars and frauds. That is a line we cannot stand. The fear is that the questioning of science by the Political Climate in the Current Administration in washington will result in serious cutbacks in scientific research. The cuts that we are talking about will really have a major impact on the progress and the speed of science. My research relies on funding from nih and there are a lot of concerns about that budget being cut which would have a big impact of the science i do focused on autism. What happens when we start to erode the funding or the trust we have in scientific institutions. The fact that were even having a debate about the climate changing is still surprising. Those speaking at the rally hoped to transcend idealogy and rely on scientific fact. Even their rallying chants were an attempt to rise above partisan politics. What do we want, evidence based science. When do we want it . After peer review. The organizers were hopeful that the size of the crowd both here and throughout the world on saturday would shed light on the threat science is facing. Resisting the war on science is central to the survival of our democracy. Act up fight back. Resist. What youve seen here and in hundreds of cities across the world including two hundred International Cities gives me plenty of hope that the will is there. Its the next steps that we have to fill in.
