Safety is a challenge for the officers and the people. Today city officials met with the chief of police and the association to try to remedy the shortage. Alecia reid joins us. What can you tell us . Reporter good evening, the president of the Police Officers association believes an emergency should be the clear, there are 1 Million People living in san jose, there should be 500 officers patrolling the streets. Right now, the city has 400 patrolling. Street patrols are in dire straits. We are talking about over 340, 10 hour shifts that need to be filled every single week in patrol. Reporter with those number, the mayor doesnt believe the department will survive the next six months. Officers are worn out working doubles and covering shifts on days up. Its not safe for any of us, the officers or the community. Reporter mondays meeting was the first step trying to fix the problem. The city manager, chief of police and city managers are expected to continue talking. The number one concern is safety for the community and officers. The options are pulling detectives from the Detective Bureau and pulling special operations officers out, which incorporate our metro unit or our gang unit. We will fill the gaps. Reporter the Department Said issues for years. The residents should not suffer. We continue to call for augmenting the Police Department with other qualified agencies. Reporter they dont believe theres any way other agencies can give up officers to help the city. The Sheriffs Department is 20 understaffed, right now. The chp is struggling to answer their calls. These are decisions the mayor can make with the Police Department, when the word emergency gets introduced the city council can get involved to make immediate changes. Two brothers killed and gunfire, a san jose shooting left bullet casings and shattered windows everywhere as dan kerman tells us this is the latest incident of violence plaguing the south bay city, which has now seen 33 murders. Reporter im outside a home on south eighth street where two brothers were murdered sunday. Police say it was 8 45 pm and a car pulled up opening up fire. One or more suspects from the vehicle began shooting at our to victims which were out in front of the residence on the street. One victim died here at the scene from a gunshot wound. The second victim was treated here at the scene and transported to the hospital and later died there. Reporter family members identified them as arturo and michael ramirez. One of father of one and the other of seven. Police wont confirm whether gangs were involved, these murders are the 32nd and third of the year. Already over the 30 murders at that occurred during all of last year. We have a real problem and we are focused on getting more officers on the street in the neighborhoods on patrol. Reporter the mayor says a lack of Police Officers isnt going to make that easy. San jose is budgeted for 1100 officers, but has less than 900 on the street. He says curbing the violence is a top priority. We recognize there are getting hotspots where we are seeing real upticks in violence and we have to focus on suppression while working with our nonprofits and safe Haven Communities and schools to see how we can get to the kids before the gangs do. Judge persky believe some people might wonder whether he could be impartial. Robert chain is set to be sentenced in a child porn case, last year persky indicated he would recuse or reduce the conviction from a felony to a misdemeanor. Currently, there is a recall underway to remove persky from his post. He was criticized for sentencing former stanford swimmer brock turner to just six months in county jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. He could have faced 14 years behind bars. Persky supporters point out he was following recommendations from the probation officer. Earlier today children affected by the clayton fire in lake county were able to return to school. Reporter the chp chopper rescue was near highway 1, which was closed late this afternoon after a car careened 250 feet down the embankment, the accident was 3 45 pm and once the car stopped in a deli, two of the three people in the car were able to get out and hike all the way up the ravine to the road. The scam starts when you receive a phone call from an unknown caller and your answer they scream and a man gets on the phone ordering parents to wire money to mexico. This is to ensure the child safety as part of the scam. The suspect speaks with an accent and anyone who receives this type of call is urged to notify the police. A federal judge in texas has put a stop to the obama administrations directive on trans gender restrooms. The administration directed Public Schools to allow people who are transgender access to the restroom of their choice. Over the weekend, a judge granted a temporary nationwide injunction against that policy. Reporter this video was recorded saturday, Police Lieutenant alan shields said the condition of the coyote is inhibiting its ability to hunt explaining why the animal has been spotted in residential areas. As you can see in the video the man has a shirt on and then here he is the same guy, with his shirt off. Police say he was fighting with a friend outside the bar and it started in july when the man was in a silver cloud karaoke bar in San Franciscos Marina District. The bartender close the bar at 2 am and the person without the shirt had left. Even wanted to come back into spend time with his friends who were still in the bar. He was not allowed. The ray fire began four days ago and is threatening the saintdenis is watershed. The dry brush, grass and oak trees sent up a huge plume of smoke. It has covered 37 square miles and is only 20 contained. Cause is under investigation. Cal fire says its nearly 1300 firefighters are encountering extreme fire activity. Up the coast, the chimney fire is threatening Hearst Castle in san luis obispo. Its covered nearly 50 square miles and nine days and is only 35 contained. 48 homes have been lost and nearly 2000 more are threatened. In monterey county, the soberanes fire, the biggest in the state 135 square miles, it was started by an illegal campfire late last month and is still only 60 contained. 57 homes have been lost in 400 more are still threatened. In Sequoia National forest, the cedar fire is only 5 contained after burning now for six days, it has spread to 30 square miles and has destroyed 10 structures.
