Safety is a challenge for the officers and the people. Today city officials met with the chief of police and the association to try to remedy the shortage. Alecia reid joins us. Reporter good evening, the president of the Police Officers association believes an emergency should be the clear, there are 1 Million People living in san jose, there should be 500 officers patrolling the streets. Right now, the city has 400 patrolling. Street patrols are in dire straits. We are talking about over 340, 10 hour shifts that need to be filled every single week in patrol. Reporter with those number, the mayor doesnt believe the department will survive the next six months. Officers are worn out working doubles and covering shifts on days up. Its not safe for any of us, the officers or the community. Reporter mondays meeting was the first step trying to fix the problem. The city manager, chief of police and city managers are expected to continue talking. The number one concern is safety for the community and officers. The options are pulling detectives from the Detective Bureau and pulling special operations officers out, which incorporate our metro unit or our gang unit. We will fill the gaps. Reporter the Department Said issues for years. The residents should not suffer. We continue to call for augmenting the Police Department with other qualified agencies. Reporter they dont believe theres any way other agencies can give up officers to help the city. The Sheriffs Department is 20 understaffed, right now. The chp is struggling to answer their calls. Two brothers killed and gunfire, a san jose shooting left bullet casings and shattered windows everywhere as dan kerman tells us this is the latest incident of violence plaguing the south bay city, which has now seen 33 murders. Reporter im outside a home on south eighth street where two brothers were murdered sunday. Police say it was 8 45 pm and a car pulled up opening up fire. One or more suspects from the vehicle began shooting at our to victims which were out in front of the residence on the street. One victim died here at the scene from a gunshot wound. The second victim was treated here at the scene and transported to the hospital and later died there. Reporter family members identified them as arturo and michael ramirez. One of father of one and the other of seven. Police wont confirm whether gangs were involved, these murders are the 32nd and third of the year.
