Damaged or destroyed. Over 4,000 people have been evacuated. And over 8300 people do not have power tonight because of this fire. Over 1,000 firefighters are working on this fire right now. There are crews from the bay area there. They have all gone up to lake county to help put out the fire tonight. We want to go where this is all happening. We have reporters on the scene. And live in lake county tonight heres with the very latest. Reporter im not going to be hearing anything. Having some technical difficulties. You saw some of the fire burning directly behind. Now you see here this fire that were talking about this is a fire thats already burned more than 3,000 acres justine. And only 5 contained. And were getting the very latest information that all of lower lake has been evacuated tonight as well as parts of southern clear lake. Ella is back live. Well go to hefrment you see the fire burning behind her. Reporter were live in lower lake here just in the downtown area off main and lake street. The downtown is now reduced to rubble. Theres just heavy smoke in the area. Its all ash and just completely turned apart from this blaze and fire. And take a look at this. Many cars and homes are now just like i said, twisted up metal. Its just charred, what used to be here is now no longer. This is quite devastating for the community here in lake county. Especially because just last year almost around the same time in september of course the fire had devastated the community where four people died. Now were taking a look at this as their emotions are running high. Its something that they have seen before. But like i said they havent really healed from that yet. And now this is yet now another fire they have been displaced by. There were many people we met with today that were now housed in centers like twin pine casino. And so this place is just completely a battleground between fire crews and this blaze that just keeps going. It started yesterday. And its still posing a risk to the community and to the fire crews who are involved here. The it is only 5 contained. Its already consumed 3,000 acres as weve heard. And you can see right here just this used to be a telephone poll. Its just on fire. Its active. Those flames just keep spewing out smoke into the air. And fire crews are just doing the best that they can here in the downtown area. We spoke to one woman earlier who lives here and was actually planning to move just a few days after and unfortunately she has nothing to take with her other than what was left in her purse. Lets hear it. Its gone. This house here like 150 or over and that house is gone too. Were you able to take anything out of your home . My purse. This is it. All you have on you. This is it. Everything i was packing and going to alaska. Back to alaska. And now i have to start over. But its okay. Reporter shes just one of dozens if not hundreds of people that are displaced because of the clayton fire this evening and like i said just as you heard from her some had nothing to take with them. They werent given any notice as the fire is rah advantaging the community as it burns. And here another ravaging the community as it burns. And here another telephone poll. And these homes are just completely burnt down to rubble. The trees some still standing. There are still scars here in lake county that stand as a reminder of last years valley fire as i mentioned earlier. So this is just another devastating incident in which people have to live through and well keep you updated as the details become available. But as we know so far only 5 contained although the fire crews have been working around the clock to make sure this doesnt spread. But unfortunately it has spread to three thousand acres and this is whats left of downtown lower lake area. Well keep you posted as more details become available and if anything changes. Thank you ella. Those living in this area of lake county have been devastated by recent fires. You can see the clayton fire that theyre dealing with is now in an area surrounded by previous fires. Last year the valley fire to the south burned more than 76 thousand acres. Killed four people and left four firefighters in serious condition. Last years rocky fire to the north burned more than 69 thousand acres and last years jerusalem fire to the east burned more than 25 thousand acres. Folks have been sending in their pictures all day and night long. One of the pictures in the lower lake area this is earlier on. You see some of the smoke. You see all of that smoke there on the screen. This photo here you can see the smoke in the distance. And then you see the fire and how close it is to some of these cars. In this shot you see one of the pickup trucks appears as though it is on fire. This is a fire that destroyed many things and many pictures showed that today. Looking down main street at one point today you just couldnt do it because the smoke was so black. And you see of course those flames. At last check ten buildings. That number could go up as we learn more information in the overnight hours and also the Morning Hours. And again those black clouds of smoke that you see there. This is also on main street, what appears to be a garage or a business in the area that burned and you look to the left of that behind some of those trees and you see other areas that were burning as well. So were talking about a lot of areas that have been effected. One of the reasons weve seen thousands of evacuations in that area. These pictures really give you a first hand look at that. Now students in the area wont be having their first day of school tomorrow. Two districts have decided to close schools because of the clayton fire. Lower lake unified and contate unified will not have classes tomorrow. As of right now the eight schools will just be closed tomorrow. No word if this will last for the rest of the week. We are covering several other fires that are burning in the state. In Monterey County the soberales fire is 90 contained. Several miles of state highway 1 in Monterey County had to close today to give firefighters more room. That road should reopen by monday afternoon. The fire has killed one person. Destroyed 57 homes and 11 buildings. And it has burned an area nearly 114 square miles. Just checking the cal fire map. Weve got nine active fires around the state right now. Summer time temperatures heating things up. Very hot weather. Triple digit heat away from the ocean and thats given rise to some of the fires. Here we go with the latest one. The clayton fire continuing to burn tonight. Were seeing the winds out of the northwest at 7 Miles Per Hour in clear lake. 10 Miles Per Hour in middleton. And the winds continue to be a factor but not real gusty which is the good news. Tomorrow briefly coming out of the east five to ten Miles Per Hour. But again it is going to be very hot. Temperatures running in the 90s. Humidity down into the teens, maybe the low 20 percentile. So very rich fire conditions continuing there. Continuing our coverage that is breaking news tonight thats the clayton fire out of lake county. That massive fire burning out of control right now. It has burned over 3,000 acres and is only 5 contained at this point. Its burning off of highway 29 and Clayton Creek. At least ten homes have been damaged or destroyed. Over 4,000 people have been evacuate and had over 8300 people are without power tonight because of this fire. Over a thousand firefighters are working this fire right now crews from nevada, and San Francisco have all be deployed to help with the fire. And joining us on the phone now is Spokesperson Lieutenant doug pitman. He normally works with the Sheriffs Office but is helping out cal fire tonight. Thank you for being with us. We know at least ten buildings have been destroyed. But weve seen pictures that appear to be a lot more than that. Do you have updated information on how much has been lost already . Exactly how many structure, homes, residences have been impacted this far is really unknown at this point. The reality is that today when this fire took off on us our mission was that of property and life and so forth. Because of this we dont have a good estimate of number. As youre seeing from your own cameras out there in the field many, many structures have been impacted by this fire. Now as the night goes on and tomorrow morning and the sunlight rises it will give us a better opportunity to take a count of exactly what extent of damage has occurred as a result to this fire today. I know you guys have been up there multiple times last year in this specific area. Obviously the valley fire now back for this fire. Every time we turn around lately in the last couple of years we see fires like this. How does this one compare from what youve seen so far . Compared to the fires i worked last year, for example the valley fire. Obviously the valley fire was much larger just in size alone. But having been on scene in middletown when it approached middletown last year im equating what i witnessed today to be similar to what i witnessed last year. The only conference being that last year i witnessed the devastation during daylight than in the nighttime than i experienced last year which is a different experience. There are about a thousand firefighters from all over the state trying to help you. What are they doing now thats its cooler and dark and whats the plan for first thing tomorrow morning. The obvious part is that as darkness falls upon the fire we lose our air support which is key in suppressing this fire. But there are thousands of firefighters here working on this fire tonight. Even more on the way. And what they are trying to do is contain the fire and parts theyve already succeeded in here. Maintaining their lines, addressing any spot fires that may erupt. What is really in our favor tonight is unlike the winds that kicked up the fire those winds have subsided. And some have switched direction which will blow the fire back into itself. Thats a good thing. And hopefully we can get it out of getting anymore fuels around the area. And at daylight well have a chance to see exactly what we need to attack this fire and bring in our air support tomorrow morning. All lower lake has been clear lake. And clear lake is about three miles to the north of lower lake. Do you see the evacuations spreading beyond that . Not at this point. But were prepared for it should there be a need. And youre absolutely right. Were giving a lot of talk and decision about what happened in lower lake itself. But it was in the direction of the other community we know as clear lake. And of course the Sheriffs Office and the Fire Department were very cautious. We tried to advise people strongly that they should probably leave the area. Many people sadly are very knowledgeable when it comes to wildland fires and they feel they could hold out until the last minute. We see a lot of that going on. But were doing Everything Possible to prepare everyone and all the communities should this fire take off on us again. I know its early. But do you have any idea on what started this fire. No. There is a team of people tasked with that. But sadly when the fire took off like it did today it was all hands on deck and all able bodies were to get on that fire and fight. Now our investigative teams will be able to return to their efforts and see if we cant determine what the cause was of this fire. Lieutenant doug pitman whos working with cal fire tonight. We appreciate your time. Be safe our there. Thank you very much. Joined now by our meteorologist to update us on the wind situations in the area. And even before you talked about the fact that some of these fires create their own winds. Absolutely. They can create the wind around. And this afternoon we had winds gusting around 20 Miles Per Hour which is what probably picked up the fire. But if the wind gets too strong they have to get out of the way and let it burn. That doesnt look like the case tonight. The winds stay relatively calm compared to what theyve been. Even as we head towards tomorrow morning were talking about some wind speeds about 3 Miles Per Hour and as the captain mentioned were seeing the winds switch directions a bit looking like they may come briefly out of the east tomorrow and push the fire back into the places theyve already burned and thats good news for the firefighters. Temperatures still going to be very hot there up into the 90s in many spots. The air quality is suffering in the north bay from that fire. And the east bay is seeing some trouble too. Moderate conditions there and into the santa clara valley. The fog rolling on in. Humidity coming up. Maybe some drizzle out too long coastlines with that in mind it looks like it will cool down the temperatures for tomorrow. Today we saw six still hot in livermore. 94 in concord and 64 degrees in San Francisco. Around the bay, still 72 and warm in livermore. 69 in concord, 53 in santa rosa. It looks like weve got a weekend low pressure that will dive into the state that will be just enough to ramp up the marine lair and boost up our temperatures briefly. In san jose a lot of sunshine in the afternoon after patches of fog. Temperatures topping out in the 80s there. 50s, maybe some low 60s into San Francisco. Some drizzle early on giving way to sunshine. Sunny and breezy in the afternoon and oakland temperatures stay mild about 71. About 82 in san jose. As we look towards the next few days we see the temperatures heating up. Maybe near triple digits by wednesday cooling off on thursday and friday. And by the way guys, dont forget, welcome back to school tomorrow. A lot of kids heading on back around the bay area starting out with some fog and temperatures in the 50s. By lunchtime temperatures in the 70s inland. Some 80s and 90s when kids get out of school at 3 00 in the afternoon. Your zone forecast coming up in a few minutes. Thank you so much. Well be right back. School starts tomorrow and kron4 is getting you ready for school. Several districts will be opening their doors to start the new school year. Heres a look at some of the places starting class tomorrow. They are dublin, pleasanton. Fremont union high, mountain view, oak grove, palo alto and San Francisco. Hope all those kids are sleeping so they can get ready for school tomorrow. Got to catch the bus. This is the first year kids in San Francisco go back to school with a new vaccination law in place. All children must be up to date on their vaccines to attend public or private schools. Personal belief exemptions are no longer accepted and medical exceptions are hard to get approved. Its nothing short of amazing that the driver made it out of this fiery crash alive saturday. The sports car was split in two and he was saved seconds before the car exploded and burned. His savior was an uber driver one of several quick thinkers on scene. We started smelling fuel. So we lifted a leg, an arm got him out from underneath the wheel. A lincoln sudan turned into its path while it was turning apparently without looking. Violence erupts in milwaukee after police shoot and kill a man after a traffic stop last night. Details on the protest happening tonight coming up. And we will continue our coverage of the clayton fire. These are live pictures right now out of lake county where the fire is still burning. We can see the flames here and the smoldering ash on the ground. We will go live to the scene when we come back. This is the bay areas news station. Kron4 news starts now with breaking news. That breaking news tonight is out of lake county where that massive fire is burning out of control tonight. It has burned over 3,000 acres and is only 5 contained and at least ten buildings have been destroyed. We know that on main street this lower lake a post office, a winery, the habitat for humanity building, just among some of the buildings that have been destroyed by the fire. Lets take a look at where this fire is burning right now. Specifically off of highway 29 and Clayton Creek just south of lower lake. At least ten homes have been damaged or destroyed. Over 4,000 people have been evacuated. Lets check in, with ella. Even in the evening hours the damage is clear. Reporter yeah definitely. And you can see that the downtown lower lake area is reduced to rubble. All of which you see has been effected by the clayton fire. And all the people that live or work here has been displaced. This is whats left of the businesses or homes left of main street. This car in the driveway is completely burned and charred metal sitting in the empty driveway. That home all the brick completely fall down. And we keep hearing sounds out here like the crackling and the fire. You can see on what used to be a telephone poll downed by the the fire. You can hear it crackling and all the lines strewn across the fire multiple Fire Agencies continue to battle these flames. Its been 3 thousand acres that are effected. And people especially, because as justine listed multiple businesses in this downtown lower lake area just completely demolished. And crews are doing the best that they can to save what is left of the place. But as you can see not much. Just a lot of charred metal, ash, and its just really heavy smoke. And you can smell the fire and how its effecting and burning everything in this area. Its just really even hard on the eyes. If you can take a look in this area in particular all of that smoke still just lifting up into the air. And you can see that for miles out even in the dark. And especially earlier in the day from twin pines where people are being housed by the red cross there at the casino. And you can see more fire crews just driving along what used to be main street and lake street. And theyre just working really hard around the clock since yesterday afternoon. So its been more than 24 hours that the clayton fire has been burning. This is it. This used to be a bus stop and its just early there just standing un eerily there just standing. This is all thats left. These people most of which i spoke to only had what was on them when they were forced to evacuate. Because they saw the flames themselves a lot of them told me they werent evacuated early enough. That they happened to see these flames just coming by in front of their homes or in their backyards and because they happened to spot it they just figured they ared get out of the area as soon as possible figured they should get out of the area as soon as possible. Ella, we want to ask you a quick question. Were looking at these live pictures and we can see a lot of firefighters are there. And were seeing the fire burn behind you. Officials only confirmed that ten homes are destroyed. Just from where you are do you see more than ten buildings or structures that are burned. Because were trying to get an idea of what youre seeing where you are . Reporter definitely. Definitely, justine. Ten is the last number that was confirmed by fire officials. But just looking down lake street here there are more than a dozen homes i would say at this point and thats just in this area. So we dont know what the official count is but looking at lake street here you can see that im sure many more businesses and homes already effected lost to this clayton fire. And its really still active. We can see the flames here and fire crews arent in the area. So you can imagine how much more devastating and higher and bigger flames left down the street that this is just left on its own to continue burning. But definitely devastating to the community here. Because this isnt the first time theyve been effected. Its almost a year to the date that the valley fire consumed much of the area and displaced people then. I met with people that this is the second time. Last time that i they had to stay in the Evacuation Center for up to a week. I cant imagine what that feels like. Especially with families with kids to take care of how do you explain to children who dont understand why theyre in that opinion. And pets too. I spoke to a woman who had animals who she had left confined in her house and she was saddened to know she couldnt let them loose before the fire consumed her house. That was the first home she ever purchased. She said her neighbors loved this place and they can eventually come back here they will continue to try to reform a community with which they used to be proud of. They dont want to leave this area. So if theyre able to rebuild they will. We heard earlier from matt mcguirre who said theyve allocated funds for this emergency. And at this point its just 5 contained. Thank you ella. And justine just want to mention as well a lot of the people in the lower lake area were in temporary housing when this fire just hit here because they lost their homes in the valley fire. And they were in this area for safety and so they could get back up on their feet. But those people have now been evacuated as well. It is very devastating and difficult situation up there. Were going to continue to follow the very latest for you. Updates are always on our website kron4. Com but well keep providing new information on the kron four news at 10 00 and 11 00 tonight. Continuing our coverage of the clayton fire thats burning right now in lake county. We do know that 3,000 acres have already burned. This fire started yesterday. It grew overnight and continued to grow today. Its only 5 contained and everyone in lower lake has been evacuated as well. Some people in the southern part of clear lake. Thats how theyre concerned. Thats how much they are concerned about this fire growing tonight. Heres what we know at this point. It has now burned over 3,000 acres and is only 5 contained. Its burning off of highway 29 in Clayton Creek just south of lower lake. At least ten homes or buildings that is have been damaged or destroyed. Over 4,000 people have been evacuated. All of those numbers likely to rise overnight. Over 8300 people are without power tonight because of this fire. And joining us right now on the phone is nicole. She lives near lower lake. And nicole, first of all thank you for joining us. Tell us about your current situation. With being so far away from the Clayton Creek fire in the lower lake area im not currently effected by it. But obviously several others are. But where you are nicole, can you smell smoke, whats it like to breathe in the area right now of lake county . Like i said so far away from the Clayton Creek fire i can smell a little bit of the smoke. I went down to Clear Lake Oaks today and the smoke was very, very thick. It hasnt quite grown that thick here yet. Still breathable. But im sure come tomorrow it will be a different story. Nicole, you live in that area. Obviously weve dealt with so many fires in that area whether it be last year or even this year in lake county. What is your general feeling. What are the emotions going through your mind when you see all of this . With everybody scrambling around a lot of people on our roadways. People coming in and out of stores. Just hearing the story, its honestly truly terrifying. Like i said im still so far away from the fire. Its not directly effecting me. But it is very scary that even still somebody could come sooning set these fires could come along and set these fires anywhere if thats the case. You joined us during our Facebook Live conversation at 8 00 and you seemed at the time to be really concerned about family and friends that you know in the area. Have you been able to check in with them. Do you know how theyre doing at the Evacuation Centers or if any of their homes have burned or how their animals are doing. I had a friend earlier who had one of her friends come pick up her horse and haul them off. As far as i understand she has packed her stuff and went back down to middletown. Another friend of mine that lives in the clear lake area from my understanding still dont need to evacuate. But of course hes a little bit further into town than where the fire is. As you speak were showing video on the screen right now. This is a live look from lower lake. You can just see the destruction that that are dealing with this evening as flames are still going up into the air in that section. Fire crews are still out there this evening because theyre dealing with so much loss in this section of lower lake. That is main street and lower lake we are looking at pictures a that truck goes by thats the habitat for Humanity Office thats on main street. As far as we can tell from looking at this its destroyed tonight. A post office and a winery as well as several other businesses and apparently cars as well all destroyed. Nicole we thank you so much for being with you tonight. But well stick with these live pictures, this is devastation for our community. We want to give everyone the latest information as soon as it comes into the newsroom. This is probably difficult for people to see knowing this is their town thats destroyed. It is an active situation right now. Here we are close to 11 00 at night. And we are looking at fire crews who are spraying down areas. We are looking at new fire trucks coming from other areas and driving through this location because this is a fire that continues to Gain Momentum in this area and nearby areas and you see all the people who are out there and all the work that theyre doing to try to put this out. It is reassuring to see a fire truck now pulling up in front of the building. As we have heard now from two different cal fire spokesperson live on air this evening at 8001000. Their priority, people at 8 00 and 10 00 their priority, people, lives. Property and trees thats second. Well get to weather. But they did make the point saying we have to get them out. Weve learned from the past. And we think we did that this time. So so far no reports of any injuries at this point. Well keep you updated on this story throughout the evening tonight. But we turn now to the weather center. And lawrence is here is that is an awful situation and a lot of kids getting ready to go back to school tomorrow. Hard to believe. And some of those folks wont be able to do that in that area. But around the rest of the bay area they will. Theyre catching a break tonight. The winds calming down just a little bit. Were seeing some westerly winds at this time. But calm tomorrow morning. Just really a gentle breeze early on. Then as we head in towards tomorrow afternoon maybe more of an easterly direction of the wind. That gives the firefighters a chance to get a hold of that fire. We had 20 Miles Per Hour winds today and that was not good news for the firefighters. Still a lot of smoke in that area. Expect mild air quality conditions. Good as you approach the coastline and also the south bay moderate in the santa clara valley. Low clouds and fog moving on shore right now. Humidity is on the rise. Temperature 64 in San Francisco. This area of low pressure helps to bring the marine air a little further on shore. Helping to cool us down a little bit. So weve got low cloud and fog surging on shore right now. And it starts break out through the Morning Hours and most of it confined to the coastline. Its it will be hot in the interior valleys. Those numbers again on the coastline into the 60s. As you head to the south 60s along the coastline. But 70s over the hills. As we slide further to the south the south bay temperatures heating up into the 70s and some 80s towards san jose tomorrow afternoon. 82 in san jose, three in campbell. And 83 in campbell. Not as hot as it was today. 93 in livermore. 91 in pleasanton. About 75 in fremont. In the north bay temperatures in the 70s and 80s. 60s along the coastline. Looking out over the next couple of days we will see the temperature continuing to rise. About the middle of the week will be the peak of the heat. Then we cool down through the next weekend. A big welcome back, kids going back to school around the bay area. The temperatures starting out a little cool in the 50s with the patchy fog giving way to sunshine by noon. And when you get out of school time to hit the pool again. 90s near the valleys. But coastline temperatures down in the 50s.
