Dont worry apparently no one else can either however almost a5t the bottom in small letters it reads compliance with all applicable local, state or federal laws codes and statues including those related to traffic and parking is required so even thought santana row is considered private property. Activating your park anywhere you want button still will not make your car invisible nats ambiance just on olsen drive alone there were so many people stopping in the fire lane commonly known as the red zone. Despite the no stopping signs posted throughout this driver was parked for more than 10 minutes with her park anywhere lights blinking at one point she runs into lisas tea treasure you might know this but park anywhere lights are contagious once activated other cars are magically attracted to the host car and then you have more nats ambiance this driver needed to pick up some packages from the wine shop. So he double parked as well now here is something funny this white van backing out of the loading dock nats; ambiance well, he really wanted to go to the parking garage he just saw the forst opening and went for it. And yes there is plenty of parking in the garage infact that where i parked. Just had to driver around for a bit nats ambiance you just have to look for it. One visitor had this to say about the drivers her its almost like living in San Francisco but i dont live in San Francisco this driver is not only in the red zone he is on the red zone and my favorite is the mad dash for Parking Spaces making uturns. Remember this is a Business District so no uturns. While santana row may be private property, it should be treated like a public street and drivenicey. We are counting down to the total eclipse. We have our teams spread all across the bay area this morning to get you ready for the first Solar Eclipse over the us in 99 years. Stick with the kron 4 morning news for complete eclipse coverage. Good morning and thanks for joining us for our special eclipse coverage. Im darya folsom. mark and im mark danon. The eclipse is set to hit totality in the bay area in about an hour and 15 minutes. But the eclipse will begin at 9 01. mark darya taking a look at live pictures as it moves across the us. On the left is a live picture from idaho, and on the right is oregon. The eclipse starts on the west coast and moves east. mark here is a map showing the path of the eclipse as it starts to move from coast to coast. This is the first time in 99 years there has been an eclipse across the us. Here in the for the first time in 99 years, we will see and eclipse go coasttocoast across the state. The totality path 97 miles wide. In the bay area, it is hard to see it at the moment. We have clouds working against us. How is it looking right now . This is a live view out of pleasanton. If you look on the lefthand side, you can see some blue peeking through. That is improving. Hopefully it will be. We have one hour and 15 minutes left. I think by then, a lot of this cloud cover will pull back enough. 10 15 is the moment of totality. It will hang for about two minutes and then it will get brighter and brighter as the moon moves off. Temperatures in the low 60s. This is the view in oakland. You can see how low the clouds are in the east bay hills. It will be tough to view from perspectives like this. You will see the clouds beginning to darken. The eclipse is technically starting, the moon is sliding in front of the sun and it will get him or and dimmer as the hour moves on. Temperatures right now, thats where i will leave you as i handed over to robin. Traffic is thinning out. Early clearing for westbound 80 commuters. Normally, it is stacked up during this time. Looking a lot better than the past hour. This is a minor wait at the toll plaza. Mostly in the cash lane. If you are carpooling, you will save some time. Traffic picking up on west 24. Now lets continue our Team Coverage of the eclipse. People are getting ready, hopefully with correct protection. Lets check in with Terisa Estacio. Reporter i am here with some very exciting people, this is lucas. What do you really want to see . The eclipse. Reporter is this a fun family thing . Everybody has their glasses. Yes. Reporter it is a Great National event. It is a once inalifetime thing. We are jumping in line to get our glasses. It is kind of a bummer that it is so foggy outside. We are not sure what will happen but were ready to be here with the crowd to check it out. Reporter lucas, inside there is a picture coming from nasa. They will show the eclipse. So even if its foggy, you will be happy with what you see inside. Okay. Reporter we are glad that they joined us from oakland. They are opening up some classrooms because so many people are checking in. Come on by chabot Space Science center, it is free today. Back to you guys. Thank you. Now lets go to lydia. Reporter there are 1400 people registered for this event. A lot of people are outside. Inside the conference center, there are different speakers talking about the eclipse. And nasa have cameras showing the eclipse throughout the United States. Out here is where a lot of people want to sit. You guys are from san jose, right . Yes. Reporter why did you come here . When you think of space, you think of nasa. Thats why we wanted to come here to watch it. My mom and i have a space kind of think thing. This is our first Solar Eclipse. These help us see the sun without hurting our eyes. Its hard to see it right now because it is covered with clouds. Reporter have you been learning about this in school . Not yet. Reporter how tough was it to get a spot here . I heard it was booked up within minutes. Right. I registered online really quickly. I am a subscriber to the nasa e mail list. Reporter why do you think its better to watch it here as opposed to anywhere else . They have a lot of good equipment. Even if it is cloudy, they will have the screen inside where they let you watch it. We are very excited. Our first Solar Eclipse. Reporter 1400 people registered to watch it here. There are lines going out the front as well. A lot of people watching the cameras from nasa as well. Everybody excited. A lot of fun here in the silicon valley. Take a look at the clouds. They are de tearing people from coming deterring people from coming here. I did catch one person who came from los angeles. He was trying to get to oregon and didnt make it that far. So we settled for San Francisco. I caught the one in 2012 off the observatory, the lunar eclipse. And i saw another one in 2011. I wanted to see this one. Another one wont happen in 40 years or something, i think. I am trying to catch this one. Reporter just about 10 minutes before i went live, he decided to leave this location and had to the east day to try to get a better chance to get to clear skies. Lets zoom in on the water, right there, you see a glimmer of sunshine in the distance. So check in with me in about one hour to see if the skies clear up. Back to you guys. The area of totality is the coolest part to see. We will talk about it all morning. Good morning. Thanks for being here. I do study this at uc berkeley. This is your day. We havent seen this for 99 years. It is exciting. We are seeing the corona of the sun, that is the outer edge of the sun. That is true. The part of the sun that you can see during a total Solar Eclipse and at no other time is called the corona. It is a very hot part of the suns atmosphere. It is over 1 million degrees and the surface of the sun is only 6000 degrees or so. We dont know why that is. It is very interesting. Normally, the disk of the sun is much brighter than the corona so you cannot see the corona at all. Like washed out, as far as my eye goes . Yes, your i only scenes the bright sunlight. You need the moon to block it out in order to see the corona. The public is very interested in the science of the sun and the eclipse. We hope people will get interested. Next summer, nasa will launch a satellite called the parker solar probe. It will go much closer to the sun than any other aircraft has gone, within a few million miles of the surface. That is the closest we have ever been. And is really pushing the limits of our technology. It gets very hot. On days like today, did you get to learn more about what happens with the corona . I think there is a chance to see it during the totality, right . That is true. People in the path of the totality will get to see it with your naked eyes. It is only there where you can take off your glasses and get a look at the corona. If you dont have a chance to be there there is a project going on calling called the Solar Eclipse mega movie. This is to make a movie from thousands of citizen scientists who will take images of the Solar Eclipse as it moves across the country. Google will use a technology to stitch them together into a continuous movie. That way you can see how the corona changes over the course of the 90 minute for the eclipse. And you brought the glasses. These are nasa approved, isoapproved. Isoapproved is what you need. We will continue our coverage this morning. This is a live picture coming in from grand prairie. We will continue with our complete eclipse coverage. The countdown clock is coming, 1 04 away. darya taking a look at live pictures as it moves across the us. On the take a live look now on the righthand side from oregon where we are just starting to see that eclipse happen. We have 1 02 away from totality. Stay tuned. We have extended eclipse coverage. mark darya taking a look at live pictures as it moves across the us. The left welcome back to the kron4 morning news. There you go. The Solar Eclipse has begun. We are one hour away from totality. You can see the moon just starting to cover up the sun with a look from Big Summit Prairie, oregon. It looks like a big bite out of the cookie right now. We have fog to contend with. We do, but it is improving in the east bay. Lets check the camera from pleasanton. The blue color is getting more apparent. That means the clouds are pulling back to the coast. We have 59 minutes and hopefully the picture will improve dramatically. East bay, south bay, doing much better than everybody else. Every time we run this loop and i come back for another update, more and more of the east bay is getting cleared out. Here is your forecast. Totality happens at 10 15 this morning. Low 60s for the temperatures. Very comfortable. You need to had to the east day, south bay, or up in elevation to see it. The top of Mount Hamilton and down near the Lick Observatory it is clear. A lot of sunshine at the airport right now. That is great news. 76minute delay for arriving flights because of the arriving clouds. Here is the forecast, 67 in San Francisco, partly cloudy. Breezy conditions last all day long. Temperatures in the low to mid 60s for most of the bay area. 71 in antioch right now, that is the exception. Later today, the east bay valley will be the warmest spot, a lot of mid80s. Around the bay, 71 in oakland and 77 four hayward, fremont and across the bay. We have a gradual warmup towards the weekend with High Pressure digging in. Now lets go to the Traffic Center with robin. Traffic is picking up around the bay area. Lets check in on the san mateo bridge, still a little crowded heading out of hayward towards the peninsula. But no big trouble spots. 15 minutes across the bay. Here is the bay bridge. A nice surprise heading into San Francisco. Only a minor weight in the cash lanes. It has improved across the upper deck. Very nice. I spotted this car fire in oakland. We have emergency crews on scene. They have closed an offramp to deal with this fire. The westbound commute is slowing go from 13 getting up to the scene of that eastbound problem. Drive times are improving. Now lets go back to the east bay with people around the area watching the eclipse. Now lets go to the Fremont Library. Reporter during the 8 00 hours we were inside. The library took reservations for some 400 pairs of glasses. Now they are all gone. We have about 150 people here. They are waiting for the fog to lift. Some have chairs and cameras. Lake elizabeth is in the distance behind me. You can see the east bay foothills, where the fog is just kind of hanging out. We have a bright spy bright spot above us. By 10 00 we should be able to see something. Many people will try to take photographs of this. They will have to have a special lens on their camera, that includes yours truly. Our Operations Managers have provided this with these lenses. Just like this. As the eclipse goes through we can see the pinprick and then it will go away, just like that. It will only stop at about 75 or so. We will see about this much of the moon. That is the way it will work. We will try to get you pictures. We are here with all of these nice folks, hoping for the eclipse in fremont. Lets go now to tiffany. Reporter i am here with astrologer of paul vogel. Good morning and thank you for coming in. It is fun to be here, thank you. Reporter this is a huge deal in the science world. This is a rare event. We have totality across the United States. That way we get to see something that is rare, beautiful, and aweinspiring. Reporter what does this mean for all of us . We all have an astrological sign. When our power goes out we think of our ancestors long ago. It does represent an ending and a beginning. Because it is a total eclipse it is like the moon on steroids, so to speak. At the tail end of leo we have an opportunity to be guided more by our heart. And it is a time to be big, dont play small. Take risks, be creative, allow yourself to be playful and spontaneous. Reporter does this eclipse bring with it, with the beginnings and endings, energy with that . I am dont i dont think it is something we would all feel. As much is there might be a sense of increased excitement around the changes that are possibly happening. Some of those changes can take us into even better places. Reporter i have a fractured foot. This could be a reason for me to slow down, a new beginning. Yes, and there will be some birthdays. I will have a list of those if your audience may want that. Reporter share, tell me about those special days. This is about the end of the sixth sign. So when we get from the 16th to 23 november. Reporter will those affected just be today or past the eclipse . The eclipse seems to reactivate three months, six months, nine months later. So we can look back to the previous new moon. Reporter paul bogle, thank you so much for coming in and for the information. We will send it back to you marc, at the desk. We are just 50 minutes away from totality. Stay tuned for continuing coverage. mark and here is a live picture as the Solar Eclipse begins. Welcome back to the kron4 morning news as we continue our Solar Eclipse coverage. Take a look at Big Summit Prairie, oregon. We are watching the moon starting to cover the sun. 48 minutes away until totality. We will be right back with our continuing and extended coverage right here on kron4. darya welcome back to the kron four morning news as we countinue our special eclipse coverage. Showing you of you from Big Summit Prairie, oregon. You can see the progress of the moon. The path of totality is only 70 miles wide as it makes its way across the United States. The first coasttocoast eclipse in the United States since 1918. Here in the bay area, about 75 coverage expected. Some get the total blackout. We have 100 right now because the sun is blocked out. It is. But i love it when a forecast happens the way you think it will happen. The east bay and south bay are clearing out. Take a look at this from san jose. The clouds are backing off. Folks are getting a shot of the Solar Eclipse as it is happening. That is great news for them. It looks like the moon is making its way across the surface of the sun. Pretty exciting as it continues to develop. In the forecast, east bay and south bay and hire up in elevations, those are your three options to view the eclipse. In the bay right now, you are under cloudy conditions. You need to get above the clouds to get that fantastic view of the Solar Eclipse. It is cloudy right now at the golden gate bridge. But we look for some sunbreaks later on today. Here is a break down. 60s right now, clearing up nicely for the east and south base. Low 70s bayside at noon. Low 80s inland at noon. The east bay is getting the sunshine right now. That is a general look at the forecast. Now lets go to the Traffic Center with robin. Checking in on haiti, it looks like most of the commuters at on i on i 80, it looks like most of the commuters have made it where they need to be. A trouble spot for oakland east as crews are dealing with this car fire. It is eastbound but it is trafficking backing up traffic westbound. You may one of avoid 580 west. Back to the news. Lets continue our Team Coverage of this total Solar Eclipse. Lets go to Terisa Estacio at the chabot Space Science center. Reporter i am here with the executive director. Kind of an exciting time. It is a very exciting time. Exciting to see. We do still have glasses. Reporter we think you will have 1000 people . More. The science is fascinating. Our mission is to inspire people about the wonders of the world around them. The eclipse is the perfect opportunity to see something they normally wouldnt. We are looking forward to the fog lifting a little bit. Many people are asking questions reporter and the countdown is on right now. Yes, 40 minutes and counting. Reporter that is the latest era chabot Space Science center. It is still kind of foggy. They do have the nasa screen on. You should have enough time to get out here. Now lets go to the Nasas Ames Research Center with lydia. Reporter lots of excitement here at the Nasas Ames Research Center. Scientists and researches researchers are inside. Many people are prepared in their lawn chairs. Show our kron4 viewers your glasses. Why did they do the plate with the glasses . Because for kids they peek out the sides. So they did that for extra protection. Reporter why did you decide to come here . What better place to watch and eclipse then at nasa. We are from santa cruz and we knew that the fog would not clear in time. Reporter you came prepared with your lawn chairs. Yes. We are all friends. I got a lastminute invite and i came to enjoy the eclipse. Reporter how hard was it to get a spot . I wouldnt know. My friend got tickets online quickly. The kids are super excited. You cant tell, but they are really excited. Reporter show me your box. Show me how to use it. Thats how you look at the eclipse, right . Can i see it . There you go. You turn your back towards it. I see a lot of people with boxes and plates with glasses. A lot of excitement here. The big moment will be at 10 15. Back to you guys at the studio. We have Team Coverage live at the Fremont Library with a viewing party as well. Reporter yes, we have a party going on here. It is sort of gray and foggy. Hold on guys. We got a rush on the camera. The clouds cleared for mably maybe 3 to 5 seconds. People are crossing their fingers and ready for an improvement on the show. The Fremont Library gave about 400 pairs of eclipse viewing glasses away. I tried getting some glasses but they ran out. I am here and will share with somebody. I dont want to miss this opportunity. This is history. I woke up early in the morning. We are here to see it. Reporter we have a lot of people here. Where are you from . I am from here in niles. Reporter you have your glasses, right . Yes. We did a science project on eclipse is one year. Reporter what are we looking for here today . The moon should cover 75 . Its basically done a look like a big black. With a lot of yellow lines coming out of it. Reporter pretty exciting. Yes. I slept through one before. Reporter terrific. The fog is starting to lift. The moon is right appeared about 11 00. We keep hoping the fog will lift so these folks can get a show at the library in fremont. Thats the latest from here at the east bay. We will keep our fingers crossed. When that little boy grows up he will have a chance to see and eclipse in april, 2024. Carbondale, illinois is right at the center. Thats one spot in america where you can see both total eclipse is, one now in one seven years from now. We have the parker solar probe and it will get 20 times closer to the sun then the earth is. What that means is that the intensity of the sun will be 400 times the intensity that we get at earth. There is an enormous amount of engineering and thermal challenges. The moon is only one 400 the size of the sun in diameter. In the solar system, we have a fortunate coincidence that the sun is about 400 times farther away than the moon is. When the conditions are just right, just between the earth and the sun and they line up, lets just see the atmosphere of the sun. We have an optical effect that we are very fortunate to see. We will talk more this morning. Stay tuned. Welcome back. As we continue our coverage of the celestial event. This is not as progresses as it is in oregon. This is casper, wyoming. We are 31 minutes away from totality. We will continue our coverage coming up. darya every 28 minutes away from totality. We have a special eclipse version of garys world. Do not look directly at the sun. Look at the light on the ground. Check it out. Ce a time there was light in my life but now theres only love in the dark. Nothing i can say but a total eclipse of the heart. darya gary this morning gary, this morning, the sun and the moon. Are you going to cover the eclipse . It is bigger than sports. I will tell you that. Gary, 12 million americans live in the path and if not, they are going to the path. They are jammed to get to the view. It is eclipse mania. We are going to show as it starts around 9 15 until around 10 15 when it reaches the peak. You have to have special glasses. They are handing out glasses, the titans are stopping practice and getting on glasses. Moderately baseball teams have special jerseys which is really cute. They have jerseys that are printed up that they are giving to the players to wear. Little League World Series will go on. They have lights if it gets real dark. It is a lighted exhibition where they are playing. You have to have the glasses to watch. You definitely cannot look up for as second. If we go out and 930 9 30 . No. I mean. In the bay area, it will not be tackler. That is a reason to watch our show. You do not want to burn your retina. Or come it will not be as spectacular for us as in the path of totality. Okay. Is the only person that i found who cares less for real about the eclipse than me is. [ overlapping speakers ] they are already saying what it is going to look like in every city in america. Why is it significant . [ overlapping speakers ] he does not care. This is a guy, he has a cabin in clayton, georgia which is one of the best place to watch. My cabin will be the only empty one because i do not give a rat you know what. All he cares about is football. You know . I do not think he gives a darn. I am not saying he cares that much. Good for you. Smile and on. He likes to jerk peoples chains a little bit. The honest to god truth is, i do not care about the wonder of the earth and is ours. That is not my thing. It just so happens that i booked equipment. You have to book them months in advance. The driving test is today. I hope it is not dark. I will be at the dmv instead of the eclipse show. Tell me again. To be a good eclipse watcher i have to tell you. The truth, because you sound like a casual eclipse guy. Yes. I am. We thought we had an expert in and she talks about what it means and why it is important. Look. This is the First Time Since 99 years. Thats a big deal. Twain was doing that very thing that i will do today over the weekend with his son. The difference is, when he teaches his kit to drive, they are in a ferrari. Look at this. He let him drive a ferrari. I guess if you were going to learn, have a daughter who is ready to drive also. I do not know if i want her in my car. What else are you going to use . You cant rent a car. You have to teacher in the atlee. My wifes car is nice also. We will be. I have a bang around car. You want to borrow . I will rent it to you. Thats funny. They are just like us. You can look for 30 seconds and thats it, right . It is so gradual. Okay. I will give you the tip of the day. You know be cool. If you see shadows look at the pavement or something. If you see a shadow, you will see a crescent shadow on the ground. It is safe to check it out that way or with the Little Leaguers, you know, they have special glasses. The kid with the play, i guess i can show you that. That is fantastic. Do you see this . Its over the fence. That is great. Hey, how did you know with the rules and everything . Wasnt out . When i saw the ball in my love, i knew was out. That is fantastic. Have you ever seen a better one than that at any level . Absolutely great. The millennials, they are ruining everything. They have an article that the millennials in business, golf is one of them. They do not golf anymore. You know, fitness raises is in and stuff like that. I know the thing that is out . Hooters is out. They do not search for them on the internet. They do not go to applebees or the casual dining. They do not know like napkins. Why no napkins . Why do you need napkins . You tell me. Tell me why not. Why not casual dining . They eat at home and at home, they are not using napkins. They use paper towels. Is it an economic thing . Is a function of who this generation is. Wait a minute. I told you. Since 2002 do you use they do not know what it is. I do not use it. How about cereal . They dont. This stuff is for millennials. They are ruining many businesses. What is this guy doing . They pretend to play pool. They do stuff like cycling or yoga. The bar routine, you know what that is . No. Let me ask you one more thing about the eclipse. I am giving you my schedule. I will the radio thing i do starts at 10 00. I park 10 minutes until 10 and i work what down. What am i going to do . Do you have a welders helmet . No. You have glasses . Can i walk to work . Park your car. Since you do not have the helmet nor the glasses. Poke a pinhole in a piece of paper as you are walking and you can look through that or looked down at shadows. Do not look at the sun. Is there any way i can park my car, make my normal thing and not look . Absolutely. It will look like a storm has moved in. There you go. Everything you need to know about the eclipse. You were going to covert . I told you. The rest of the gang will be here. It sounds good. I will tell you if my son passes. Thats good. When youre son get his license, that is a big deal.
