Rob . The number of accidents between los gatos and santa cruz are at their highest level in 13 years. There can be no doubt that wettest winter in a decade has something to do with it but there are a number of reasons why accidents are spiking on highway 17. There were 983 acciden ts on highway 17 in 2016, 160 of them resulted in injuries. Thats the mostin thirteen years. Whats going on . I asked chp officer ross lee. Office ross lee chp its people driving too fast, changing lanes without checking to see if its clear, driving while distracted, following too closely. Clearly, the weather is a factor too as drivers coped with heavy rain, dodging mud slides and downed trees. But more often than not, accidents here are happening because someone is driving too fast says the chp. Officer ross lee chp as people come up from below, on 880 for example, the speed limit is 65, but when they get up here towards the summit, the speed limit drops down to 50 and for whatever reason some people just arent aware of that. The speed limit is clearly posted along the way and the chp has stepped up enforcement in recent years. Improvements like anti skid paving, new and higher median barriers, guard rails and better turnouts have improved safety but the chp says the road itself, however treacherous it may seem, is rarely to blame in most accidents. Officer ross lee chp occasionally we see a crash where we cant fault the driver but that is a very small fraction of these cases. The most dangerous part of highway 17 is people not following the safety rules. rob live another reason the accidents are piling up is the simple fact that there is more traffic on highway 17 as people are looking to santa cruz and the mountains for cheaper housing.
