Reporter all this month, a team of geologists will drill 20 30 foot deep holes in a line running east to west between san leandro and castro valley. They will also place hundreds of temporary seismographs in the same area. Researchers will then set off small detonations at the bottom of each hole and use the seismographs to record the shockwaves. By analyzing that data, they can then create kind of a 3 dimensional map of what the hayward fault looks like 5 to six miles underground. They may also be able to see if the hayward connects to other nearby fault lines like the calaveras and greenville faults. And we want to see how all of those faulte are releated.
