(male announcer) live from the kron 4 news station, this is the kron 4 news.another cruise ship mishap. a fire on board this royal caribbean ship. sent passengers to their lifeboat stations in the middle of catherine heenan has more on the scary night for thousands of passengers headed for the bahamas. >> catherine: the ship is named "grandeur of the seas," but it doesn't look so grand today. it left baltimore on friday for a seven=day cruise with 22=hundred passengers. you can bet none of them got much sleep last night. (not a drill, not a joke, >> catherine: passenger danielle miller says she was awakened just >> our stateroom attendant was pounding on our door, and i opened the door to see people running around yelling at us to get our life jackets on and run as fast as we can up to deck five. >> catherine: miller says the seas had been rough >> before we went to bed, there was a pretty bad storm and the boat was really rocking, so our first thought was that the boat was sinking. >> catherine: when she reached the deck, the sight was not reassuring. >> we saw the lifeboats being lowered down. a lot of people were really freaking out >> we were shoulder to shoulder with a ton of people who were just as terrified as we were and we didn't know what was going on for about a half an hour when they made an announcement that there had been a fire. >> catherine: it took more than two hours to put out the fire. royal caribbean decided to reroute the ship to freeport to assess the damage. the ship's medical staff said two people had to be one was injured. the cruise line says it's arranging plane flights home for the passengers and they will all get full refunds. catherine,now lets take a look at some of the other notable cruise nightmares this year. in february. acruise ship's engm caught fire. leaving it adrift for days in the gulf of mexico. among the conditions onboard the triumph at that time - no running water, overflowing toliets, and hardly any power. that ship was eventually towed back to shore. then in march -- what is believed to be a noro-virus outbreak, happened on a royal carribean cruise ship. more than 100 passengers and crew onboard the 'vision of the seas' got sick. everyone was treated on the vessel. and besides some stomache problems - and in their twenties. ruvin abel vazquez, jonathan jade mouton, and rosa maria falla a major crash in san jose sent two teenagers to the hospital early this morning. a car slammed into a tree around 2:45 this morning. at alum rock avenue and white road. the two victims are a boyfriend and girlfriend. both 17-years-old. according to police, the male driver had his foot cut off in the accident. and is also suffering from other internal injuries. he is currently in critical condition. his passenger suffered a broken leg. early reports from officers say, they smelled alcohol in the car. leading them to believe, drinking may have led to the crash. and the drinking may have caused the driver to go too fast for conditions. been looking at the damage of the vehicle it is pretty obvious that they were speeding. faster than the speed limit police have not finished the investigation into the crash, and the drinking allegation has not yet been confirmed. >> and the violence in san francisco. police are searching for the person or persons responsible for attacking a homeless man. while he was sleeping. officers say, it happened around 5 a-m near the intersection of morris and bryant. that's only three blocks from a police station. the victim was taken to san francisco general hospital with injuries to his head. his condition is still unknown. the investigation is ongoing. anyone with information on what happened or the suspect. is asked to cal the san francisco police department. >> a follow-up to this weekend's crash of a party bus in burlingame. a crash that killed a woman and injured ten others. kron-4 has confirmed. the victim killed is identified as sarah klein, a famous burlesque dancer who lived in san mateo. klein was known in the burlesque world. as "sparkly devil," these are photographs of her. her husband, raul padilla, was the driver at the time, and police say, he did have alcohol in his system. depending on how much, he could be charged with drinking and driving or vehicular manslaughter. >> pam: the proposition 8 debate was heard by the u.s. supreme court, but the rights of marriage may not ultimately be decided by the highest court of the land. the decision may actually come down to a technicality. according to the l-a times, protect marrage -- the group that sponsored proposition eight and is the defendant in the case -- has no standing. former governor arnold schwarzenegger never defended the ban voters passed, and the current governor -- jerry brown -- says it is unconstitutionaere to dismiss the case based on the technicality, the decision would then come from the california courts. a ruling from the supreme court is expected some time this summer. those celebrating memorial day in alameda got the chance to do so. in a floating museum that is also.as kron4's haaziq madyun shows you.a navy battleship >> reporter: over 100 people gathered up there on the u- s-s hornet in: alameda this memorial day the museum's classsic world war ii naval air planes and bombers servered as a back drop for those attending the 14th annual memorial day ceremonywhich included music provided by members of the original u-s-s hornet band the most anticpated moment of the day included a parade through the ship, carrying a wreath, that was cast overboarda navy traditionin memory of those who have died serving their countythat was followed by the casting individual flowers into the bayby veteran naval officers like theseto young patriot's like this little guy here honoring the fallenin alameda haaziq madyun kron4news , hundreds gathered at arlington national cemetery it was filled with music. at a monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers >> coming up at eight. we'll take you out to lafayette, where well- wishers are honoring those who have served and those keep us all safe. it's memorial day in the east bay -- on the kron-4 news at eight o'clock. >> catherine: on this memorial day. president obama was at arlington national cemetery. and aside from the official events - [nervous giggle] (male announcer) break the monotony. for more fun ideas visit spam.com. tom lost his home of 19 years in the tornado. all he owns now -- the clothes on his back, a new toothbrush - and now a little cash. he plans to use the money to get a pick-up truck. both of his vehicles were crushed in the storm. even in terrible times, the town of moore is still finding a way to honor memorial day. in the middle of all the rubble, an american flag flies. people say it's both in honor of memorial day - and a symbol of hope for the tornado-ravaged town. more than 12-thousand homes were destroyed in moore and the oklahoma city area. 24 people were killed and more than three hundred were injured. crews were out today in texas. trying to figure out the extent of the damage after flooding in and around san antonio. in "bear" county - more than 6 dozen people had to be rescued sunday. a lot of them had been trapped in or on their cars -- in the rising waters. more than 60 people had to evacuate saturday because of the flooding. some of them have returned home - and face a major clean-up job. two people died in the storm. downpours turned streets in quincy, illinois into rivers. this is video from early this morning. the flooding was so heavy -- you could see waves breaking on the roads. more than five inches of rain filled the streets.as drivers tried to maneuever through the fast-rising water. in central iowa, memorial day was also spent in flood clean-up. several days of heavy rain resulted in flooding in kellogg, iowa. just a few weeks ago, the town was worried about a long-running drought in the area. now - they're sand-bagging to stop flooding at a water treatment plant. city officials shut down the entire water system as a precaution. residents are being asked to boil and conserve water. and in upstate new york and parts of new england, they were hit with heavy snow. not what you expect to see on memorial day. as much as nine inches of snow piled up on mount mansfield in vermont over the weekend. great for skiiers - but it also meant treacherous driving conditions, road closures and power outages. at lower elevations, the storm caused significant flooding. vermont's governor has been urging people to stay home and avoid flooded roads. >> the snowfall in the sierras for tonight. with about a thousand feet. we will take a look at some traces of rainfall for the bay area. just traces. with a loop over the past hour. some light and isolated showers this evening. that is how it will be for the rest of the day and midnight. we could see some clouds over the san mateo bridge otherwise it is pretty cloudy for tomorrow, look for clouds and spotty drizzle. gusting winds and as strong as 40 m.p.h. for wednesday, a similar day. showers in sonoma. sunny for the afternoon. a big warm up. but i think that by the time the weekend will be here 80s by the bay and the nine these inland. nearly 100 degrees towards the end of the week but that is not a story tonight. those spotty showers. as they drift off to the bay area. by 10:00 p.m., we will see some areas of sprinkles. and we will see a lot in the way fre north bay, the south bay and it will be slow to clear. and the clouds will be peeling back from the inland valleys. sunshine for the rest of the bay area. temperatures not that bad. [ male announcer ] add a wireless receiver. call to get u-verse tv for just $19 a month with qualifying bundles. rethink possible. here's kron 4's gabe slate to help us tune in to the new trend. >> netflix takes on hollywood. this could be the end of tv as we know it the bluethe new season of the popular tv show arrested development debuted yesterday exclusively on netflix. and the internet exploded over it. it's all the buzz on the web right now here's the back story arrested development is a comedy that had 3 seasons on fox the show had a dedicated following but not enough viewers so fox cancelled it in 2006. years later netflix realized that the most streamed tv show through their service was this show that got cancelled early on. so they decided to act like a hollywood studio and make another season of arrested development. season 4 the show picks up right where it left off you can not see the show on any network channel you can only see it through netflix's streaming internet service which is $8 a month. and here is what is rocking the entertainment world the way tv is now you wait a week for a new episode to air so a season of a traditional tv series can take 7 months to get through. netflix has thrown all that out the door they released all the new episodes of this new season of arrested development at the same time you could watch the entire season in one sitting. or a la carte at your convience a la carte is what tv execs fear is the future..people don't like being told they have to tune in at a certain a time each week or set their dvr to catch their show they want it when they want it right then netflix is offering that. if this new arrested development season on netflix is a big hit, which it's looking like it is. could be the beginning of a fundamental change on how cable and networks offer you tv they might have to switch to an on demand system. gabe slate, kron 4 news. >> rutgers university still trying to get over the mess. so why did this woman is under fire herself? coming up. more news. gatherings recently. crowd at a republican dinner rutgers university is still trying to get over the mess left by former men's basketball coach mike rice. so why is the woman the school hired to run the scarlet knights program under fire herself? former basketball coach mike rice isn't the only scandal rutgers university faces. the new athletic director -- hired to clean up the program after rice was fired for abusive behavior -- is now herself accused of being an abusive coach. john berman reports. >> reporter: rutgers university faced tough criticism in the days after a video surfaced of its head basketball coach being abusive toward players. coach mike rice's aggressive behavior. hurling basketballs at players and yelling homophobic slurs. the university fired rice after a public outcry and the athletic director was also forced to resign. >> "i was deeply disturbed by the behavior the video revealed." >> reporter: this time, the university's president will have to answer to governor chris christie after reports surfaced that the new athletic director -- hired to turn the university's image around -- is herself accused of being an abusive coach. the governor's spokesperson said in a statement: >> "he's not going to be making any judgments at this time, but he expects to be talking with the rutgers administration this week to get the details." it has emerged that back in 1996, all 15 members of julie hermann's volleyball team at the university of tennessee wrote her a letter. the players wrote in part, "the mental cruelty that we as a team have suffered is unbearable". "we have been lied to, publicly humiliated, and ripped apart as both players and people." they said the coach had called them "whores, alcoholics, and learning disabled." one of the players provided the star-ledger with a copy of the letter. the paper says hermann responded - quote: >> "i never heard any of this, never name-calling them or anything like that whatsoever." hermann has promised she will bring a new era to rutgers: >> "it is a new day, it is already fixed and there is no one that doesn't agree about how we treat young people with respect and dignity and build trust." >> reporter: but at that news conference, hermann was asked about a jury award of one-hundred-and-fifty thousand dollars to former assistant coach ginger hineline back in 1997. hineline claimed she was fired because she was pregnant. in 1994, hermann was a bridesmaid at hineline's marriage. and in the video the coach said this about her becoming pregnant: >> "i hope it's good tonight. i hope it's not too good, because i don't want you to come back in february with any surprises, you know, the office and all, and it would be hard to have a baby in there." >> reporter: hermann responded. >> "there's a video? i'm sorry, did you say there was a video? there's no video, trust me." hermann is even seen here catching the bouquet. the university says its attorneys had investigated the case before hermann was appointed. but as it prepares for the big ten, rutgers has another big headache. >> catherine: that was john berman reporting. the 49-year-old hermann has acknowledged that she was an intense coach, and may have made mistakes. she says she's grown since then, and believes she's more than qualified to run the scarlet knights' athletic program. but that doesn't mean she'll necessarily be sticking around. rutgers is a state school. new jersey governor chris christie is planning to review her appointment before she begins her term on june 17th. >> coming up in shey, look!k! a a shooting s st! >> coming up in sports, the mamake a wish!h! i wish w we could lie e here forevever. i wish thihis test dririve w ov, so we e could headad back to thehe dealershihip.
