I spoke to several of them and they say theyre baffled and angry over the loss of their goodpaying jobs. Closing down the shop. It is happening all over the state right now. Reporter this solar city warehouse now in reno is closing its doors. The solar city installer says hell soon join the ranks of the unemployed. What are you going to do . What are your plan . That is a good question. As of tomorrow it is going to be my last day so ill be out of work. Reporter he and his co worker say the Company Offered to relocate them to another state, but they say for them thats not an option. Ive got three kids, a fiancee, truck payment, house payment, i cant move. The kids are in school here. Reporter he and the others say they loved working for the company. They told me their pay started at around 50,000 a year and included a big benefits package. They also say with hard work and promotions, they expected their salaries to climb to six figures. I came to solar city and i was looking at it as my last job. Reporter but they say the decision by nevadas Public Utilities commission in december changed their lives. The Commission Approved a rake hike at the request of the energy that increases the bills for the solar customers. That decision raised a fixed fee and lowered the value of credits solar customers earned. The employees say the decision makes solar energy no longer affordable in nevada. The commission argued the new rate structure is necessary so customers without solar are not unfairly subsidizing solar customers. But it is an argument the employee doesnt buy. What happened . P. R. Well, reno Police Say Two children who were in the car that crashed into a 7eleven this morning are safe and uninjured. The police say andre dawson was driving in the area of east Second Street with two children when his car crashed through the front of the store. The Authorities Say no one was inside the store and no one in the car was seriously injured. Dawson, also known as david jones, was booked on suspicious of driving under the influence of alcohol. The police say that dawson was just released from the Washoe CountySheriffs Office last night after being arrested last saturday for his second offense new numbers show how nevadas Education System compares to other states in the u. Reporter according to two reports, the silver state is not doing so well when it comes to education. Education week released a report at the end of 2015 ranking nevada as the worst state for k. Through 12 education. That report takes into account things like povertybased gaps and finance. Now, when it comes to higher education, nevada is performing poorly as well. At least that is what the Organization Young invisibles is reporting. They released a report card this week giving nevada an f. For its Financial Support of higher education. The report takes into account things like state student aid and equity of enrollment. I brought this report card to the Vice President of associated students of the university of nevada to see what she thinks of her schools it makes me really sad to see that. I have grown up in nevada my whole life and i went to school. I feel like i have been given a lot of opportunities throughout school and that i have had a great education. It is sad to see that on a national level. It doesnt seem like we have the great Education System here. Reporter today i also spoke to the chairman of the november d. H. Board of regents and the entire rim superintendent of public schools. They both say they expect nevadas scores to increase in the coming years. After some winter storm weather over the past few days, some roadways were impacted a little more than others. Madison corney joins us with our first look at the forecast and how the recent rain has rerouted some drivers. Thats right. A rock slide in Yosemite National park has closed one of the main routes into the yosemite valley. Road, an extension of highway 140, and the officials dont know how long it will take to clear the roadway. The rock slide happened early this morning. Fortunately no injuries were reported. Two other roadways are open to allow visitors into the valley, and you can head to yosemites web site to find alternative directions into the park. Turning to reno weather, a fun fact for you. The temperature at the reno airport today reached 40 degrees for the First Time Since december 23. This span of 14 consecutive days with temperatures below 40 degrees was the seventh longest going back to 1893. Todays official day time high did reach 42 degrees. The morning low, actually below average at 29 degrees and take a look at the record low, 18 below zero that was set back in 1890. Conditions. Were looking at 37 degrees with cloudy skies and winds out of the north at five miles per hour. On live doppler radar, were still seeing a few isolated showers out toward eastern those diminish late tonight and then were looking at a break in the storm on friday. We are looking at the possibility of freezing fog returning to the region tonight and early tomorrow morning, and then were looking to drop down into the lower 20s tonight. And then by the afternoon tomorrow, we do expect to hit the upper 30s. We are tracking another storm system expected to make its way in on saturday as this other system moves out tonight. Well take a much closer look at that and how much snow we could see in the sierra and on the valley floors coming up in your full forecast. Thank you. With all of this Winter Weather and snow, roadways have been really slick for drivers. Meteorologist kathy wilson met with ndot earlier today and how have they been dealing with all of these storm . Pretty busy . Reporter we saw some freezing fog yesterday and this morning, but it was two different cases. The freezing fog this morning fell on top of snow instead of directly to the asphalt, which helped improve the conditions so the roads were not as bad inches of snow fell, and that freezing fog. The freezing fog hit after the snow which is not as rough of an impact as the reverse situation. The Nevada Department of transportation uses a mixture of salt, sand and salt water to prevent poor winter conditions. It really prevents the snow and ice from freezing directly to the road. They actually use a local salt, and one of its past suppliers located here in nevada in fallin. They create it inhouse, a clean sea salt mixture and dilute it with water to create a concentration of 23 salt to spray on to the roads. And ndot is highly prepared for winter storms with sensors on seconds of the highway that measure the air surface air and surface temps. And so they know when their salts effectiveness is starting to deteriorate. Salt mix with the salt water, we actually can show a reduction in our salt usage overall for the year. Too much salt is not good, but you need enough for Public Safety and thats what were all about. The next time there is a major accident blocking the road in reno, it may open up faster thanks the a hightech gadget that will cut down how much time investigators need to be on the scene. The Reno Police Traffic division is the first in the state to use this new technology. It is called the pharoah system. The machine has a rotating mirror that shoots out lasers in 360 degrees. The lasers collect color and immersive 3d scene around it. The Major Accident Investigation Team will use this system to diagnose crash scenes much faster and more accurately. This is all made possible by a grant from the state office of traffic safety. This weekend the reno latin dance fest will be in town and tonight they are kicking off their show. This is their itth eighth year performing in the Biggest Little city and they will be dancing at the silver legacy. 80 Dance Companies from around the country as well as canada and mexico will perform for this fourday festival. A judge has ordered one of the officers in the freddie gray case to testify in the cases of two of his colleagues, and the attorneys for officer William Porter are trying to stop that from happening. Porter was one of six officers charged in freddie grays death a jury declared a mistrial in his case last december. Again, friday is a break in the sturm and in just a second ill carson city right at that freezing mark of 32 degrees. We have dropped down into the 20s at this hour around the lake tonight. On live doppler radar, were still seeing a few left over showers out there in Eastern Nevada toward elko and battle mountain, but were going to see them diminish as this last bit of low pressure makes its way out of the region. Friday we have a break before the next system moves in. I put this in motion for you. Were going to see partly cloudy skies across the state tomorrow. The sierra looking pretty clear until tomorrow an. We are going to see quite a bit of cloud cover move in. By saturday Early Morning, this is 3 00 a. M. , were going to start to see that snow in the sierra and rainfall right behind it in california and isolated to scattered snow showers across the region on saturday. Were looking to see maybe a few inches in the sierra and possibly an inch of accumulation on valley floors on saturday. Reno and sparks tonight dropping down to 21 degrees. A few isolated showers. A very, very slight chance of that, but still possible with 10 00 and possibly causing late night commute or Early Morning commuter problems with this freezing fog possible tonight and early tomorrow morning. Tomorrows day time high looking to reach 38 degrees clouds expected. Eastern nevada could still see a few left over scattered showers tomorrow, but it is just the slightest chance with day time highs in up ther 20s to the lower 30s. Degrees. Much cooler into the Single Digits tonight. Warmer for the day time highs. And even the lower 40s in hawthorn tomorrow. 36 degrees for that day time high in carson city. Down into the teens and 20s. We are going to see cooler overnight lows than what we have seen the past couple of nights. Were going to take a little bit of a dip. Tomorrow were looking at highs even above the freezing mark. Single digit overnight low in truckee at nine degrees with a slight chance for some lingering showers around the lake tomorrow as well. Were looking at areas of patchy fog and day time highs into the mid and upper 30s, and the valley floor tonight, teens and 20s. 18 degrees tonight in cold springs. And 16 for galena and the lower 20s for Golden Valley and really elsewhere. Again, we do have the mix of sunshine and clouds tomorrow, but then the next system moving in late friday night and Early Saturday Morning so in carson city, a 50 chance for that snow and around the lake, a 90 chance. Another break on sunday and then by the beginning of the work week across the region, were looking at another system. These are much weaker systems than what we saw this past week, but still the possibility of up oh an inch of snow on the valley floors on saturday with our day time highs warming up into the lower 40s with the next system making its way in.
