Rewarding program is sponsored by family life a Little Rock Arkansas. The scriptures offer a specific command for wives. Gryphus says a lot of women simply read right past Did you know you can read the Bible from cover to cover you will never find a command that says wives love your husband not there now it's implied for sure but you don't find this excerpt Haitian this charge is command love your husbands the question is why. I believe it's because of the number one need of your husband is not love. But what you will find over and over in Scripture is this command wives respect your husband. This is family life today for Thursday October 12th Our host is the president of family life Dennis Rainey and I'm Bob the pain what is the Bible saying when it calls on a wife to respect her husband and even as importantly what is it not saying we'll hear today from Trent and Andrea stated. And welcome to family life today thanks for joining us this is culturally risky territory where wandering off into today don't you think I want to say something I think if wives grasp the importance and the power of communicating respect to their husbands they would be amazed. At. How they might see their husband be transformed into more of what they wish he would become and more of who God created and exactly I think the easiest thing in a marriage Bob is to spot the weaknesses in your spouse and certainly women can see through men pretty clearly and there's a lot about men that's not worthy of respect but the command of scripture to women and the chanst chapter 5 makes it real clear wives respect your husbands and that means to hold them and in a steam and value them and communicate that value with their words their attitudes their actions and we're going to hear from a couple of great young communicators today Bob who are on our weekend to remember marriage get away speaker team Trent and Andrea Griffith Trent is the pastor of the harvest Bible chapel in Granger Indiana I've not been there but I've been close Bob but they're great couple they're fun lively and they have a lot to say on this subject that to I think our audience needs to hear they've tackled the subject of how a wife can show respect to her husband and I should mention Trent also did of a message of how a husband should love his wife it's a great message as well but we're going to hear from Trent and Andrea today as they unpack this idea of how a wife can honor and respect her husband Here's pastor Trent Griffith. Of fees in $533.00 is our summary verse and it says this however let each one of you that particular you is a Utah husbands you husbands let each one of you husbands love his wife as himself and let the wife see that she respects her husband so I remember a couple weeks ago we had a plan. Appearing and we kind of hypothetically talked about that husband that says you know Mo marriages did well the question is did you water it did you feed it because it needs some things from you and what did we say the number one need of a wife was what was it guys love so you got to constantly be loving your wife now ladies and as we turn our attention to you this morning here's something that may surprise you. In the span of 8 verses in features chapter 5 God tells husbands to love their wives the re different times Husbands love your wives husbands love your wives husbands love your wives ladies why do you think God had to tell your husband 3 times in the span of 8 verses to love you. Sometimes we can be a little thick headed we have to be reminded we have to be right over and over oh yeah I. Did you know you can read the Bible from cover to cover you will never find a command that says wives love your husbands it's not there now it's implied for sure Titus Chapter 2 says that older women are to teach the younger women to be lovers of their husbands and so of course you're supposed to love your wife but you don't find this extra Taishan this charge this command love your husbands the question is why. I believe it's because the number one need of your husband is not love. But what you will find over and over in Scripture is this command wives respect your husband why is that. It's because the number one need of your husband is respect and when he senses you respect him he will understand his love. If yes the wives in this room the wives that just to do you love your husband most of them would say they have love him but knucklehead. Are So here that wives have a natural ability to love a needy person God built that into you Ok. But wives have to be urged and encouraged in reminded in charge with this command respect him. And you say how could we respect him if he was respectable Oh listen if he was respectable you wouldn't need the command. In the same way that if you were always loveable your husband would need the command to love you. We get the commands because there's times when wives are not lovable and husbands are not respectable get it that's why God puts the command there and so we're going to study how to do that today Ok whatever one is this wife compliment your husband now be careful how you spell that as you fill in the blank that is a compliment within easy not a compliment with an eye it doesn't mean you're supposed to say your biceps or show. And and I love the way you change the oil in the car now that that we don't mind that kind of compliment ladies we could use more of that probably but that's not what we're saying this word compliment is like the word you used in your geometry class in high school the member complimentary angles. It means to fill in to complete to compliment in a way that you bring something to your husband he doesn't have it means to play a team role well and we're going to see that here in verse 22 So look back up at the fees It's $522.00 let's start verse $21.00 we've looked at this several times but it says submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ remember a few weeks ago when we talked about that message how to be a winner every day and one of the things that winners do is they fill their relationships with submission that means that we come alongside of each other we come up under one another we support we cheer on we say I want to be on the team I don't even have to call the plays I just want to believe in you. Do I want to go the same direction that you're going on to help you get there we fill our relationships with submission that's worse 21 then we get to verse 22 it is specifically targeting wives and so he says Wives submit to your own husbands as to the Lord. And ladies aren't you grateful for that little 3 letter word their own husbands. Isn't it great you don't have to submit to everybody's as mine. There's just one. And God's command is not that all women submit to all men God's command is that if you're a why you have one has been in that is the husband you are to submit to you say well I don't like that well then you should have got married you didn't have to get married but if you're married in your wife and you're a Christian this is a requirement it's not an option and so he says in verse 23 for the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church his body and is himself and Savior and so husbands have a role to play we are to lead we are the leaders in the relationships are the initiators of the relationship are the risk takers they were the ones that say follow me I know the way I'm going this way everybody come with me and that's the job of the husband verse 24 now as the church submit to Christ so also wives should submit in every way and everything to their husbands and so this is your favorite word ladies I know in the whole Bible and if you think it's hard to listen to just imagine how hard it is for me as a man to actually have to give you some instruction today. It's like walking through a minefield you may actually witness me blow myself up right here on the platform Ok now in order to prevent that I am going to need some help so I'm actually going to ask a wife that at times has to deal with a disrespect a and. A needy husband to come up here and help me Andrea my wife would you please come up here and help me from stepping on a landmine you know as we get into this there it's important we understand what submission is not and what submission is 1st of all understand this submission is not a statement of value man and women have equal value before the award God statement of submission is a. Statement of function in a role not a value Ok God has a different function a different use for a husband then he has for a wife and when we both player role Well we both win it's a statement a function not a value Secondly submission is not just a woman's issue. Everybody has to submit to authority your husband submit to the authority of God God is his head and has to submit to an employer and the reason why this is hard is not because you're a woman it's because we don't like to be told what to do we don't like to bring ourselves up under somebody else's leadership so it's hard for all of us and also understand this submission is not in a bullying sinful activity in your husband it's not blind obedience to sinful activity we have to obey God rather than man and when one authority conflicts with another authority which one do you obey the higher authority right you have a higher authority than your husband and so ladies if you're in a relationship where your husband is abusive or if he's asking you to do something that is clearly sin he would submit to that So the question is what is submission and so let's give it some some meaning here it simply means to give up control it means to yield it means to use all of your creativity and your intelligence and your intuition to come up under in just support the direction that your husband is leading a probably the best description of this that I've ever heard I can improve on it comes from John Piper no surprise and here's what John Piper says about this idea of submission submission is the divine calling of a wife to honor in affirm her husband's leadership and to help to carry through according to her gifts it is the display. Zation to follow a husband's authority and an inclination to yield to his leadership all of these words calling disposition inclination and then he says it's an attitude that says I delight for you to take the initiative in our family I'm glad when you take responsibility for the thing for things and to lead with love I don't flourish in the relationship when you are passive and I have to make sure the family works without you so many ladies have a hard job now we talked about how they've got a hard job and we can make their job easier by loving and leading the way God called us to lead ladies you have a hard job we admit this is hard. And yet by doing this you can make your husband's job easier to love and to lead when he senses that he has your respect and I remember one time when I was not getting We were living in Buchanan and I was home school in our kids and every night after dinner Trent would say hey let's go take a log and every night I was like No I have dinner dishes to do we've got to get stuff ready for tomorrow I just I had my own agenda my own plan my own way that I was going and finally one night he just stopped and he took me by the shoulders and he said. I am trying to lead you and all of a sudden I I thought it and I thought why do I always have to have a better idea or I can't get off my own agenda and so I was like Ok You know what those dinner dishes can wait let's go take a walk so we just started taking a walk after dinner and you know what. I love being outside I really needed to be with my husband as I was only being with kids all the time and so following his leadership was of great benefit to me when I came back to do the dinner dishes it was a lot more fun because I had connected with my husband and I found that to beach food so many times in submission for me though I never would have said this going into marriage submission has become kind of an adventure because I have one way and the trip says well why don't we do it this way it's a way I've never thought of I get a new perspective I get out of my box I get out of my comfort zone and it's fine and there's adventure there and there's also protection when he's saying don't do things there's been a lot of wisdom as I've just said you know I'm just going to step back because he's not in on this so many times we think submission is a statement of value it's not as a statement of value it's a statement of rule a function as we come alongside and help our husbands to be all that they were created to be as they leave our families so wife complement your husband Secondly wife respect your husband So what does this word respect main Let's give it some definition here so short phrases here it means to esteem to regard to value to look up to to admired to heed to notice to consider to recognize to defer to to honor to be kind to spare to take into account to uphold to appreciate all those aspects of respect are there now ladies please understand how God has wired your husband almost every husband or almost every wife would appreciate their wife their husband taking leadership but you. Fail to understand what fuels his leadership listen respect is a rocket fuel to leadership if a husband doesn't sense that he has respect from his wife ladies your husband will lose motivation to lead and he will fade into the background and if you start picking up all of the leadership responsibility your husband will be glad to let you have it. But if you will respect him encourage him and inspire him and motivate him he will pick up that God given role and lovingly the way God has called him to you maybe like me I found that I had a respect for true and like I had this feeling of respect but there was this gap in me feeling it in him hearing it from me there was this huge communication gap I didn't know how to tell him and he wasn't hearing the ways I was trying to tell him so one day I just asked him I just said how do you hear respect from me and I was so surprised that easy answer it had nothing to do with the way I was trying to communicate it so ladies that would be something I would encourage you to do just as your husband how do you hear respect from me and when they tell you just listen don't be defensive and if that goes well then go to the next question and say How am I communicating disrespect to you. Well again we've been listening to the 1st part of a message from our friends Trent and Andrea Griffith talking about how a wife can demonstrate respect for her husband I feed off of Barbara's respect for me and recall that rocket fuel it really is as it is that feeds the soul and every man needs a woman in his life besides his mom who would believe in him and expect the best of him and cheer him on and I don't think it means that a woman is less of a person for respecting her husband it's really a in my opinion a very noble assignment and one that takes I think some skill and prayer and asking God to show you to catch your husband doing things right where you can show respect this is one of the subjects that gets addressed at our weekend remember marriage getaways and it happens on Sunday morning while the men are here. Straight talk about their assignment as husbands and his fathers the wives get an extended period of time where it's just the women and there's conversation about what it is we're to do and to be as wives and as moms and folks who have attended the getaway tell us that last Sunday morning is really a highlight of the weekend for them most of us do not understand how to be a wife or how to be a husband and when the assignment that God has given us there's really nothing in life that would prepare you other than your family of origin and in many cases the model that was presented there was not a biblical one but unless you've been discipled and mentored by a Godly Woman How's a wife going to figure out what does it look like to truly respect your husband I think these kind of discussions like we're having here on family life today are really important to I think equip wives to be who they're supposed to be so the men will be able to lead and serve well in and love well in their assignment I've talked to a lot of men and a lot of wives for that matter who have said the time together at a weekend remember marriage getaway was transformative in their marriage in fact you and I were talking to a couple this week who said they were at a low point they were separated and God used a weekend remember as a turning point for them and now more than 20 years later they're thriving they are and they're impacting other marriages and you left out a detail or 2 bob you spoke at the conference where their marriage was saved 20 years ago and now here they are business owners impacting other people's lives they just left to go on a mission strip to Africa and I just think when all is well at home you can do a lot of stuff in the world to make an impact for Jesus Christ King but when all isn't well at home when you 2 aren't click and likewise we're I think rendered far less useful in the kingdom's work when we're not click and with us Miles the reality is that most of the people who are coming to a weekend remember are in a pretty good place in their marriage they would score their marriage you know above 70 percent. But those folks still need an adjustment a tune up because it's easy to slip out of tune in your marriage and that's what we try to provide at the weekend to remember an opportunity for you to reexamine recalibrate get your mind set in the right direction and then begin to live that out your marriage and again I'd just encourage our listeners to find out more about the weekend remember when you go to family life today dot com or call if you have any questions 1800 f.l. For a future blessing and future ministry so that God always uses have troubles them trying hard aches and persecution for something that is good. And whatever we're going through today God will use his preparation for our service in a ministry to him in the future. Well in talking with Dr Charles Stanley like any belief or a pastor faces difficult conflicts about position to the Gospel Dr Stanley knows what that's like and today we'll hear his story originally presented to a gathering of Similary students in 1809 with encouragement to stand firm with God in prayer Here's Part 4 of the prayer of wife of a ministry leader conflict is in evidence in the ministry of Paul would never have written this and if the Asian 6 which you know so well beginning inversed him he says finally be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil brow struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rules against the powers against the world forces of this darkness against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places and then of course you remember the next part that talks about the kind of armor we have to wear and he explains each one of those and then in verse 18 he says with all prayer and petition pray at all times in the spirit and with this in view the only alert with all perseverance and petition for All Saints and you recall that Paul said to me at the those who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution and he talked about suffering with him as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. So that's what I want to talk about and when conflict comes we usually respond in one of 3 ways we don't want to run into something that's easy or some greener pasture or we want to react and we want to buy our words verbal defend ourselves and blare back and often times get in the midst of the kind of conflict that makes those appear no tall and no stronger no higher no more guarded than the people who've attacked us but then there's one of the way to respond which is what I believe that Paul is referring to indications chapter 6 and you know we don't have time to go through all those verses except to use that as a catalyst and that is the say the right response is the response of standing in prayer that is always God's rightful response so what I would like to do a little different today is just to explore these simple truths by sharing something that happened in my own life. That maybe will be an encouragement to you it may scare some of you but I hope it's an encouragement to you and what I want you to do is not Remember necessarily the incidences that happened but I want you to remember the basic principles because you are going to have conflict so the question is how are you going to respond are you going to run are you going to fight back or are you going to use the most powerful weapon you can use and let's see what happens so let me begin when I came to Atlanta I came as an associate pastor the pastor had been there for about 16 years and I came as an associate past that to sort of help with the young people. I was there a year and the past the left. Immediately those folks would call me began to talk about me being the pastor but there was one man and a group of 7 men who said Over my dead body will he be the pastor that man convinced all of these are those that I absolutely should not be the pastor and so they set out by November of that year and the pastor left in September to get rid of me so it immediately drove me to my knees I thought God how am I to respond to this. And so for about a year I just lived on my face day after day because I did not ever know what was going to happen next and so I remember one day I was in the prayer room and I was just really weeping before God because I didn't know how to handle this. And it's like the largest said to me very clearly pray law. And keep quiet you cannot conquer strong prayer truth. And deep quiet this and that all would just whisper to me so quietly just trust me just trust me just trust. I want to tell you you're going to get hurt you're going to get disappointed but people whom you have great confidence and I want to tell you that up front you can't avoid it it's what you do with it that really matters and so God just kept driving me back to my knees and one day I was praying and I remember the Lord just showed me this so clearly because I was getting a little tendency to get a little anger and I wanted to fight back and it's like the Lord said no you can't sell war it doesn't make a difference what they say what they do what they accuse you of you must not say one word and so I had to wrestle with some really difficult things and I found out that the place you battle your battles is not in the pulpit. Not on the church mobile business meeting but on your face before God by yourself in the prayer room that's where you win the battle. So God just kept saying to me Be quiet don't say anything don't defend yourself keep preaching the gospel. Don't fight back but remember most of all you've got to see everything that you hear and everything that is done to you as coming from me. I saw found myself praying to God What are you trying to do in my life through all of this and somehow when I began to pray that God what your goal for my life and all of this somehow my feelings of resentment and a little bit of bitterness a little hostility in one defend must have all of a sudden I begin to realize I did feel that in them all then it became an excitement and God What are you up to in all of this I've been asked to come here I've not done anything to offend these people and what they accuse me of was that all our preached was about the Holy Spirit how to be saved the 2nd coming of Jesus not all I wish that were true in fact many things they accused me of I really wish had been true and so I just had to keep coming back to the Lord saying Lord show me what are you saying to me in all of this and I want to tell you something in persecution you learn some things about God and you learn some things about yourself and I learned some things about myself God in like. And I knew that when it was all over no matter what that more than likely God was going to use all of that to begin to deal with me to do some things in my life that probably he may not have ever been able to do without surfacing some added to feelings that I've had probably lying dormant all of my life here's what I want you to remember when the going gets tough and the persecution gets hot and he gets sticky if you up and leave and Ron You assume the responsibility for your actions. If you stand true to God and just stand firmly lovingly staying on your face before God. They have to make the decision and if they make the wrong decision they have to live with it not you so I was up in Bryan College speaking and. I heard one of my deacon friends call me he said it will Charles he said while you've been away this week he said the committee voted to remove you from the pulpit and so Ossett Ok that's all right and all that week I've been sharing often I've been working on Sunday morning sermons on a night so I came home and I realized what was happening and they were going to distribute these all this material the next morning so that everybody could know while they were remove me from the pulpit and so I came home and I was studying for Sunday morning sermon some reason I didn't have a message so the afternoon no message Saturday night nothing Sunday morning no message went to church that Sunday morning no sermon I walked out on the platform. No sermon Thank you. I mean when I say 9 I had none and the devil must have sat down beside me because I'm sure he must have said this to me Well well well. Now they're going to see what a fool you make of yourself when you walk out here on prepared to preach to the choir saying but here's what happened when they finished I stood up and walked up opened my Bible just flipped it open it flipped open to Proverbs 35 and 6 it's like God said to me you stand aside and let me handle this I started just like that but 45 minutes out caught up my heart and never skipped a beat I never mentioned the situation I never said a thing I preach the sermon on how to find the will of God I've never preached to before haven't preached it since don't have any earthly idea what I said. When I gave the invitation Here's what happened people walking down the aisle and going up the aisle they were leaving the choir it was like a bombshell it's so absolutely put these folks in distraught they were absolutely overwhelmed and I couldn't tell you anything I said it was just the power of God moving in the hearts that congregation and that night that place was loaded a Wednesday night we voted had a business meeting for 3 hours probably had about 2000 people they came to fight it out they were fully persuaded they were they were going to win and it was all over it was done. And I sat there and I had my Bible open to a passage of Scripture. That I'm sure that many of you have read many times it's the one the Lord laid upon my heart that night for I want to then this is what it says. 5417 no weapon that is formed against you should prosper and every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn this is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication is for me declares the Lord I'll tell you a strange thing. That night for 3 hours. Listen to them argue among themselves they tried every parliamentary procedure possible but here is the thing that amazed me in a 3 hour discussion to get rid of me not one person ever said one negative word about me if I were going to get rid of somebody I give you 40 reasons why should be Pastor Nobody ever said a word they wrangled among themselves and they found they voted and they voted to call me as the pastor. Well you can imagine what a happy occasion that was. When the vote was about 60 some percent versus about 30 so I'm on there about so then they call for me and they didn't realize I was sitting there watching all this well that humiliate them something terrible So all these folks left and went a block away and started their own worship service and they would come to Sunday school go down that I worship they would eat in the dining room a one and rest of us on the other end and then they would come to primitive. This went on for October November December and so I just kept praying to show me the next step and every Sunday people are joining the church people get to say that I was amazed you would think that with all the fussing and fighting going on and the things that were happening that people wouldn't come it's like God just began to draw people to fellowship and the more I thought of it I thought I won't take very long I'll be so far outnumbered they already are that they would have a chance to know what you need think all kinds of things and so. I was down praying and I want to say this again to you are know that some of you think you know how do you find God God's will that way if you live as long as I have been through what I've been through you'll know I was down praying it was January we didn't even have a church offices no Sunday School workers nobody because every time we had a business meeting the goal was to get rid of me and so we never got around to electing anybody so the largest player impressed upon my heart I had an ole Army colonel who was my son a school superintendent I said to him I'm going to ask this church to give me full authority to appoint all the leadership of this church he says I'm with you 100 percent. So I prayed about that for about a week to be sure I had God's mind on and on Wednesday morning I was praying. His the passage of Scripture God laid upon my heart. Hear my voice Oh God in my complaint and preserve my life from dread of the enemy had me from The Secret Council of evil doers from the tumult of those who do iniquity who sharpen the tongue like a sword they aim to better speech as the ara to shoot from concealment of the blameless suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear they hold fast to themselves an evil purpose they talk of laying snares secretly they say who can save them they devise injustice is saying we are ready with a well conceived plot but the inward heart in the heart of a man a deep. But gobbled shoot at them with an arrow suddenly they will be wounded so they will make him stumble their own tongue against them and all who see them will shake their head then all men will fear and will declare the work of God and will consider what he has done the righteous man will be glad in the Lord and will take refuge in him and all the upright in heart will glory. It's like just x. That in my heart I was almost fearful of going to premie that night and so but I went and so I call for a business meeting. On our call for business meeting these folks came pouring in on the outside they were never come inside and so I asked the church to give me full of started to upon all the church offices which they did well one of these fellows decided he wanted to say something sauce that was sure so you want to come up on the platform I remember what this passage says. So he walked up to make a little speech and he said and if Stanley if you don't watch out you're going to get hurt so I was standing right here so he backhands me in the jaw right there. Well my 1st response was not anger but pure joy. They go listen to what this passage says this passage says suddenly they will be wounded. And what that man did by hitting me was he categorized all of these people and a lady stood up in the front she said how dare you hit my pastor my son and he was 11 he came up out of the pew over here one of my deacons grabbed him just. He said and this valley is all over just don't worry about it and 2 of my friends came up whole this awful often people began to weep all over the congregation these folks got up began to leave in 10 days all 300 of them are gone half the Sunday School Leadership 40 of the 6 The Deacons they were all gone in 10 days God remove them I never argued I never fussed I never fought the only thing I did was to pray and I believe God and the trust him that he was sufficient to take me through the heartache. Now you probably will never go through anything like that and you wonder why am I telling you that simply for this reason the only way I survived it was on my face before God they after day week after week I found myself praying far more than studying but always had just exactly what God wanted me to have and I was there to preach. And I watch God do the most miraculous marvelous things in some people's lives and then I watch the effect of that upon my children. And sometimes we think well you know these things just destroy families they could if you don't include them if you don't involve them and if you don't pray together and my kids grew up watching all of this happen and they learn something that you obey God no matter what the consequences and when you do. It will always on other. Now they could have fired me but here's what the Lord showed me you win either way because the issue is not whether you beat the pastor or not the issue between you and me is whether you obey me or not that's the issue whether you win or whether you lose if you obey me you still win and if you can just remember that if you obey God You always win you never lose it doesn't make any difference what happens you always win. When you humble yourself before him you don't fight back you don't defend yourself you retreat to prayer and God will show you step by step what you to say what you not to say and you say Well suppose you had gotten fired. So what. If I'm in the center of God's will that is the only safe place in the world to be. You're listening to in touch with Dr Charles Stanley he continues this message tomorrow. Interesting thing that happened was this lady called me that I had not ever met before and I don't know who she was her name was Mrs Sauls So I want to say she said to me after we ate lunch she said I want you to go upstairs to my apartment I want to show you something so she knew that I'd been going through all this and she'd been sitting right there week after week she'd been a nurse of 50 some years and she said I want to show you something she took me up to apartment and we walked in she let me sit down she said no I want to show you something called me over and she had a picture on the wall and it was a picture of Daniel in the lion's den and she said Son I want you to tell me what you see saw I looked at the picture lost it well I see Daniel and he had his hands behind him and he was looking up as a red light coming in the prison and all the lines were there there Miles of clothes and some other lying down some of them looking up at the light and some looking at Daniel and and some bones willingness I told her everything that on a teller. She put her arm around me she said son. What I want you to see is Daniel doesn't get his eyes on the line. If Jesus himself had wrapped his loving arms around me nothing could have been more profoundly needful in my life what she was saying to me is don't look at your if you just keep your focus on God he's going to see you through this.
