Tunstall in the weeks ahead here on acoustic cafe. This week it's one of our Americana fest sessions recorded at sound stage Studios in Nashville last month our sessions in Nashville this year were made possible by the St Cecilia Music Center in Grand Rapids Michigan by the way this time it's John Hiatt John Hiatt arrived in Nashville in the early 1970 s. From Indiana he quickly got noticed for his songwriting which has produced hits for 3 dog night to Bonnie Raitt Eric Clapton with b.b. King to Jeff Healey to Emmylou Harris and dozens more but John also has had a long recording career with a couple of dozen albums since his 1984 debut but after the last 124 teens terms of my surrender John just couldn't quite find a good reason to continue nothing in particular was wrong he just wasn't feelin it eventually songs were written and recorded and now the eclipse Sessions has been released but to talk about that period between albums and play some of the new songs we welcome back John Hiatt as our in studio cast if you could talk a little bit about that period of time well you know I we toured terms of my surrender pretty hard and then I came home I hadn't written a song all that year and which was kind of unusual for me and then 2016. I started cutting my touring in half I did about 50 shows a solo some With that I didn't write anything in 2016 and I was. I don't know I just felt like I had I had an age that that time I was 64 I just kind of didn't know where to go yeah I just felt like I was somewhere I'd never been before and I didn't quite know what to write about or or you know or if I don't know I just there wasn't much inspiration to be had in terms. Of songwriting so I wasn't I didn't worry about it but it just was what it was and then I started toward the end. 2016 I the muse appear and I started writing some songs and it was one of the darker songs on the record actually was the 1st one I wrote which was Robert's highway to ask about yes if a cli addy which was a it was kind of a thinking over all my years as a troubadour and and empathizing with fellow troubadours who are who walk the broad highway out there and and I'm thinking about guys it and women who do it you know relentlessly various levels of success I call them lifers I call us lifers we don't it doesn't matter to us if it's if we're playing arenas or you know how to see clothes and we just walk was just keep killing Cain field and find your roots of one kind. Guy has not felt Gaga 39 sting. Mouthful of cotton feet of clay. I didn't plan on waking up today. I had a heart. In the rain. Now I don't know how many the same. Common Good mean jeez I'm Saddam was. Coming get me cause I can go on. I love my brother I love the smile. Frame. Only one way in this thing. Some. Down and dirty cheap only to the. One doing the one who was used to the do so where. I call word same string. Now I don't want to have any of these things. Come a Good Man Jesus I don't. Come and give me cause I go home. Shirt and pants coughing blood. Bushido crying. Fields of cotton fields of clay. Sun go in down on the. Wind then with. That same. I know understanding of any of these things. Coming Jesus Zaki. Coming in. It was the 1st song he wrote in the new batch and it is the final song on the new album called The Eclipse sessions robbers highway from our in studio guest this week on acoustic cafe John Hiatt robbers highway refers to the Natchez Trace it was called the Rogers highway because it was an old Indian travel to one point merchants would. Take their stuff on flat boats down the Mississippi and then walk back the Natchez Trace. From Natchez Mississippi and with the cat with the cash the money they had made and oftentimes they were they were robbed along the way and I just use that as a sort of an analogy for what you have to pay the price you have to pay to be a $2.00 door and you know it's still not to distant a job it's the best job in the world but everybody pays a price for what they do and so it was kind of just you know talking about that in wonder and where were the inspiration had gone and it's not a celebration of the truth of our life it's a very realistic look it it's unvarnished I was worried that it would sound like I was complaining there's a glamorous notion to this life understand that you know I could be digging ditches and I am grateful every day that I can do this for a living but you pay a price to be on the road it's a hard life that's why people do drugs and overdose and die you know. It's it's simple it's not that they're having fun you know and just doing it for yucks I see that you referenced 2 of my favorite albums from your past in describing the eclipse sessions. Bring the family from 1907 and crossing Muddy Waters in 2000 and both of those albums you know in their own ways they were immediate and loose and entirely comfortable. It was what was the parallel for the eclipse sessions Well I just felt like they kind of all 3 happened in similar fashion very serendipitous I wasn't really intending to make a record I just kind of was going into it because I had some songs and I really didn't have an idea of what kind of record I wanted to make and. My friend Kenny Blevins who has played drums with me on and off since the bring in family tour called me said you know Kevin McKendry who plays b 3 and piano with Adele of a Clinton and Brian Setzer has a little studio out behind his house in the country south of Nashville and he gets a really good simple sound and I want to get together and you know toss some of your songs I said Yeah I said let's How about you on a real broken down kid no crash cymbals just one Tom a snare and high hat and I'll play acoustic and sing and let's get Patrick O'Hearn who's played bass with me before and we'll just record is a trio It has a feel of wholeness about it like those to record stood you know it's all of a piece you can't plan no you can't just can't That's right and yet can you think it's something from your you know Vasquez like you're making records for a long tacky think of a situation where on paper this should have been perfect but the songs were there the leaders were and I was alone and you don't need to name names you're not and I can think of a number or a number of records yeah right I'm not yeah I'm not at my best when things are planned for some damn him down again if he is not true. He not That's crying to me from our in studio guest on acoustic cafe this week John Hiatt we recorded our session down at sound stage Studios in Nashville on Music Row during Americana fest and we will have more from John Hiatt from American of us in the 2nd hour acoustic cafe and coming up it's Candace Springs and I am a winner from 20. 17 and I live here.
