Hospitality show the 2 big operators Marriott and Helton they decided to show their softer side what I mean by this is they didn't promote their core or their namesake brands but instead Mary promoted heavily its autograph tribute and luxury collection brands helped and pushed its curio and tapestry collection Intercontinental Hotel they didn't disclose the name but they announced that they'll be adding a new mid-scale brand that's going to compliment their candlelit suites and their. Holiday Inn brands window they're going to debut a new middle scale if you will brand hotel call trademark with about 50 properties and the Trump organization they're launching a new hotel chain inspired by the president's run for office called American idea the 1st 3 hotels will be in Mississippi and they'll be capturing the history and heritage of small towns by using local artifacts and materials so why all these new hotel brands Well Mary and autograph collection for example it's one of the fastest growing full service brands in the industry ever and you know they're focusing on independent travelers 40 percent of whom by the way say they don't want to stay in America so. I mean I live and breathe this stuff all day and I can't remember who belongs to whom from time to time it is the who is going to. Like go to the cereal aisle you know $70000.00 different brands now or if it is Ok In other news 3 House Democrats have introduced legislation they claim will permit passengers to clear security at airports faster it's called the faster act and it would require the government to stop siphoning funds for general government expenses from the airport security fees that we all as passengers pay for every airline ticket. He's going to save the t.s.a. Could use the funds for their designated purposes which is namely airport security we'd have better and more staffing which would decrease airport waits about $0.33 of every dollar that you and I pay for airline security when we buy an airline ticket is diverted to the government's General Fund and the president's new so-called skinny budget aims to raise the passenger fees but continues to divert part of those monies elsewhere and say hello to another European low fare airline who wants to make inroads into the u.s. And from there the 688 passenger ship will cross the Pacific to Hawaii French Polynesia New Zealand Australia before turning northward to towards Asia for stops in ports such as Singapore Kuala Lumpur. Waterways dot com I just got to remember that a common look under sponsors for a direct link to waterways my next guest is a woman who well she calls herself a hobo So I looked up a hobo on dictionary dot com this morning and found a hobo means a tramp or a vagrant and I don't think she's either but she is a world traveler who has been travelling the world for 10 years and says she saved about $100000.00 of what she would pay deliver a more conventional life and her name and her name and Nora done nor welcome to the show and do you want explain to what the professional hobo what hobo means to us are you. Thank you very much of a read it's a pleasure to be here and yeah I was to be a. Professional hobo I was when I started travelling full time I sold everything I owned in 2006 including a busy financial planning practice and all the accoutrements of success and found myself traveling the world and people would say well what do you do because that's the 1st patient question we normally ask people when we're trying to get to know them and I didn't have a good answer for them so I decided to say you know I just to make fun of myself I said I'm a professional hobo because that's how like a bit of an oxymoron unto itself and the name stuck and I've actually taken the art of hobo Inger to be a vagrant or someone who doesn't have a home to work on the road and at a professional edge to it all right how may I ask how old you were when you left your job as a financial services planner where you were living at the time and were reaching you today for that matter I was living in Canada at the time I'm born and raised in Toronto I was 30 years old when I decided to sell everything and travel the world 10 years ago so you can do the math and I'm talking to you right now I'm actually I've spent the last 3 years on and off living in the Andes South America and you've caught me right now packing my bags because I'm leaving to spend the summer in Japan and I'm currently in Florida staying with a friend Ok We're going to Japan all over I'm going to be house sitting just outside of Tokyo for 2 months All right well there's one clue on how you've lived so inexpensive you've actually written a whole book about it now I mentioned that. I want to I want to mention that book to our listeners it's called what is it called it's on a different website I mean the name is a to rational level it's called You can find a book on my website which is the professional hobo dot com and the book of which I've written a few but this one in particular is called How to get free accommodation around the world are you doing this for 10 years nor And this is a long time and I will tell you you just gave the website professional nobody. Com one of the things I got a kick out of you being a financial planner is a pie chart of how much you spent on accommodation transportation food drink groceries phone internet personal business banking insurance gives medical tourism activities and education in the largest block is this isn't 10 years I gather up to 2015 Anyway you spent a little over $25000.70 the largest amount was on accommodations but 7000 dollars to live for 10 years most of us can live for 6 months you know in rental or mortgage payments for that so briefly how do you find free places are very low priced places to stay. Well the last couple of years have been have been a little different for me because in some cases I have actually paid for accommodation but in my 1st 5 or 6 years of travel alone I rarely if ever paid for accommodation at all and there's a number of different ways that you can get free accommodation around the world you can find volunteer jobs work trade opportunities where you volunteer time for a few hours a day in order to get free accommodation and sometimes free food as well and for me I found that also a very enriching cultural experience in a way to immerse in a local culture and experience being in that country in a different way from for example staying in hotels and being on the tourist circuit . Shortly thereafter I discovered how sitting which worked out very well for me because I work online as a writer so I get to enjoy all the comforts of home somebody else's home that is well I'm taking care of their home their effects their pets answering the mail while they're away on a on a trip of their own and I think it's not time to to do my own work and also to live a slice of local life and just how you feel like how stunning how do you find housing opportunities in a country a continent away or an ocean away and there are a number of websites that can connect you with work trade and house sitting opportunities there said if you have to do ones or trust a trusted house sitters dot com house it match house it world if you go to my website I can give you a whole list of resources that can help connect aspiring house sitters with homeowners that need their services one from talking to Nora Don she has the professional hobo that's her description of her life and for the last 10 years she has given up her professional life to travel around the world and and from the enthusiasm a voice I guess she's certainly join enjoying it. You do so you work along the way and then on you and on your website professional hobo dot com is a picture of you milking a goat and you this clearly didn't fall into the job description of a financial planner. No and that the. Go milking opportunity was actually the very 1st free accommodation opportunity I had after leaving Canada and and I marveled at the transition from being a former financial Tiger tycoon to resident goat milk or it's certainly taught me that to make running around in general. It taught me certainly that travelling the world in general acquires a lot of flexibility and over the years I have done some amazing things that I would never have the opportunity to do and trade for free accommodation I painted murals I go to I've helped manage retreat centers. Various I've done landscaping I like Eco tracks on llamas in Australia all kinds of very interesting opportunities have come my way by virtue of simply having my eyes and ears open to whatever might be coming down the road next to this is so much to do a lot of hostels are being days. I don't tend to because staying and staying in hostels in particular can be very exhausting I mean when travel is a full time lifestyle for me personally in order to keep it maintainable I need to go somewhere for a few months I need to to settle in the act of constantly packing your bags and moving beds every 3 days can be exhausting so I don't I'll stay in a hostel or hotel for a day here and there is I'm transiting from one location to another but for the most part I find places that I can stay in for a while and feel comfortable as your social life been affected the last 10 years if you don't mind. My social life has been fiber and I mean I have met and become friends with people all over the world many of whom I still stay in touch with thanks to the Internet to the ability to to email and and social media Stan touch with people my relationship to and people I mean have you fallen in love over yes absolutely I've had quite a few partners on the road. And have come with me from. Various parts of my journey I was going to ask how you how you how you tear yourself away but they come with you you don't have to some Yeah how I generally meet people who who are have a similar flexible lifestyle to myself There's actually a surprising number of people who are embracing a more flexible lifestyle one that allows them to work on the road and consequently to live wherever they want can you see you doing this another 1020 years. Well you know what I've come to learn. To roll with the punches and see what life throws me after 10 years on the road I found that my pace of travel has now slowed quite dramatically I enjoy spending at least a few months in every place I don't have to take list of places that I'm trying to take off to see in the world for me it's much more than a process of living around the world I've had a couple of home bases along the way and and yeah I look forward to seeing where my next home base is going to be good for you Nora Dunn is a professional hobo that's her Web site the professional hobo dot com She's written a couple of books if her lifestyle even for a year long 10 years sounds appealing to you check out our Web site professional hobo dot com Your Thanks so much for stopping in while you're doing a stopover in Florida and have a great time in Japan I envy you had Thank you very much it's been a pleasure. Fascinating fascinating find you've got to go to the festival about I can just look at that by chart of her expenses I can even do that thing in one place and she's done it traveling the world coming up next we'll talk with Andy Williams No not the singer but the president outdoor photographer will tell you if we have to start checking planes what you should think about. Workshop Ok so I've got my nightgown equipment and the t.s.a. Decides as they may that I can't carry that over my shoulder into the plane I'm worried about my camera getting stolen I'm worrying about getting damaged. What kind of advice do you have for us well the 1st thing I need to bring up for everybody who's going to travel with this kind of gear is that you you just got to have some extra insurance. The airline is not going to cover you your normal insurance that you would have for a lost luggage or whatever oftentimes your homeowner's may cover you if you're not acting in a commercial capacity or as a professional check with your agent but very often in common is you know to get a separate policy that will cover you for a lost or stolen or damaged high end expensive gear like a lot. Like your Nikon or Canon or Sony any of this gear that you may have to pack into the hold of the plane so my 1st recommendation insurance good advice very good advice so yeah there's a lot of uncertainty right I mean right now there is no ban for people leaving the u.s. We've got people over in Norway on a trip right now for 2 weeks they left the us. You know there's no ban in place but what happens if it changes and as we know things can change you know at the drop of a hat these days so you've got to be prepared one way is to pack your camera gear. In what's called a Pelican case a hard plastic case designed for electronics and if you were to pack that pack it that way it will be safe and secure those are designed for this type of transportation However it doesn't eliminate the possibility of theft which everybody is always concerned about right or lost luggage which you can't do anything about and we all prefer to carry it on the plane with us but there may be a time when we cannot and so the way to do it is to have a hard sided case that's specifically designed for your gear there is one other kind of interesting way that people are approaching this and that is they're going to ship their gear on a big trip using something like the h.l. Or u.p.s. I'm going to ship it internationally much higher chance of likelihood that the gear gets there and gets there safely but it is it does come at a cost Sure and I think one of the most important tips and you know it's something I didn't even think about so that you don't leave the phone you don't lose the photographs you already have your camera you do what Yeah so it's very important to carry your memory cards on your person and that can always go on the plane with you know never pack your memory cards and if you can carry your backup device your hard drive whatever you're using on your trip to make 2nd copies of your photos try to carry that. On the plane too and with. You know the solid state drives made by companies like Samsung they're very small even the thumb drive can be used to make 2nd copies but definitely carry those with you that is. You know I'm old enough to have used film for years and the trick is you can take your exposed film out and carried separately and put it back him but take that chip out before you hand that camera to anyone get separate insurance or get a rider on your insurance policy make sure not only your camera your laptop your i Pad whatever all covered in case it gets I mean as I think it will be. It's open season on theft and it will in some baggage rooms where where the good guys are and I really appreciate your joining us and make it what have you back to talk about your foot photography trips at some point if you don't mind thank you very much really we're staying on top of this check out workshops dot com for any kind of updates thank you and I mean to spell that for our listeners again and he Williams . Is Worth runs travel workshops for photographers who want to go abroad or he just referenced a group that apparently is in Norway now spelled am you eat and c h mutual workshop's dot com If you'd like more information on that and pour United Airlines a classical violinist flying from Houston to Missouri. Boy you can put a very expensive violin in the luggage space except it turns out small musical instruments are exempt from that she's now threatening a lawsuit there was some physical altercation and maybe damage thank you for being airline employees use common sense. 100. Let's get into our deals of the week Mary had it starts off all right sounds good well if you're going to be in Europe this summer and you have some extra time on your itinerary and you want to tack on another country or 2 this deals for you budget European airline Ryanair has launched a hung parliament sail based on already past 2 weeks voting results with 50000 seats across 60 routes on sale for as low as $99.00 on the British pound which is roughly about 12 and a half close to 13 u.s. $1.01 way the sale goes until midnight June 12th so you need to act fast to take advantage of these deals but to give you an example from a London stance that Stansted you can now add flights to Switzerland France Germany Denmark bug area Romania and Poland among others for as little as a roughly 1212 and a half u.s. Dollars Let's go really crazy Ok more a fair deal as I know is this summer I must not be any business travelers for flying but all business class airline luck upon you that only flies one route between Newark and Paris is the Charles de Gaulle Airport well they get 150 business class seats each day they get to sell so to help move seats during the summer keep in mind their seats go way back but they're not lie flat seats but still not bad if an adult pays $1300.00 roundtrip which ain't bad in itself you can take a child along for just a $1000.00 in business class these prices are good for travel between July 10th until August 27th so good part of this about 6 weeks you can find your information and look upon these c o m p a g and I use website and Air Lingus is pitching as this is something I've never heard of a split travel option for flyers from the northeast you can fly to Dublin in coach and return in business class I guess you know more people who fly business overnight getting there but it's not bad so it sells its business class seats to Dublin and needs to fill up coming back from Dublin So from July 1st through August 22nd you can fly coach to Dublin. Boston Hartford New York j.f.k. Or Newark and return in business class for a price as low as $1348.00 round trip but you've got to buy a home in the next few days get a purchase by June 14th and you'll be booked in a class outbound in a de class back from Dublin All right I'm going to switch from airlines to cruise and if you're a little short on cash in the cruise industry 1st Carnival Cruise Line they've launched their new pay over time program that enables travelers to pay for their cruise in 3 monthly installments travelers simply make their initial cruise deposit and then the balance of their cruise is charging 3 equal payments which are taken out automatically on the same designated day for 3 consecutive months travelers can either register for the program at Carnival dot com When you make your booking or. Are Ok to cover some hotels I'm a big fan of group on for local deals and group has a section on their website if you go to the website you go to get away as collection last minute travel so you do need to be able to flexible here but if you look under their deals under the getaways collection last minute travel you are going to find hotel prices One example is the Excalibur in Vegas 30 dollars a night family friendly hotels in the Orlando area starting as low as $42.00 a night Caribbean $79.00 a night and I was surprised to see that cancellation rules still apply and they will give you in many cases up to 48 hours prior to check and to still be able to cancel your deals so I'm a fan of group on so I mean I have found the deals that I have. Yeah this is great I have to. Tell you she's that friend you got out of this stuff. You know that's that's Mary always saving money right yeah it's right. If you use high end points to. Book tickets excuse me to book room seats of your I had gold passport remember that you can. Kember 5th get 10 percent of whatever points you use back into your account not a big deal but you got to register by June 30th and your say must be completed by Sept temper 5th and little footnote you have to have a high a Chase credit card to get a discount but anytime you get 10 percent of your miles or hotel points back I say . Think. Big big. Trouble with a. Minivan caravan or quite a caravan and we take them and we we convert them we put a kitchen in the back or. A refrigerator. Back and then on the top of the vehicle we have. What we call great a lot of pretty. Convenient driving a big. System so that they can be you can be running conditioning or running other things that are not running off the car engine which is nice but you know if folks if they haven't seen a Juicy Campus they're not hard to miss because you've got a very bold paint scheme in the green so I know you currently are operating on the West Coast only at this point Los Angeles San Francisco and Los Vegas you do have plans to expand I believe you get 250 of the many your visa to ram talk to us about what the costs are and who's your typical customer.
