In Los Angeles on result is Friday today but the 26 screen is always stab you along everybody is for gross d. Is for domestic p. Is for product defined as the value of all the goods and services produced in this economy it's right up there at the top of the list of economic indicators though not without some flaws which we will get to in a bit but I mention it because we've got what is known as the advanced estimate in essence the rough draft of g.d.p. Growth for the 1st quarter of the year this morning up 3.2 percent upside surprise is the word you're looking for there and it is the place we will begin our discussion of the week it was in this economy here to do that with her Catherine Bell from The Washington Post also Sudeep Reddy from Politico everybody. So Kevin let me start with you upside surprise and with the caveat that we are going to do a little dissection of this thing in about 56 mins with Nancy Marshall Genzer what what's your gut telling you about this number. Well the headline number looks good certainly better than was predicted the underlying guts of the number in terms of like the components of it that are a little more forward looking which I'm guessing you're going to get to more in depth later not the answer the number but your gut right I mean you know well look at our guts you know guts all around in the sense that like the consumption number it was disappointing that business investment number also disappointing and the main mechanism through which we were told that the Trump tax cuts were going to reduce the economy from here until eternity was of course in business investment and the fact that both of those components of it were a little disappointing is not encouraging it that said like there's no suggestion that there's going to be a recession around the corner which had been the fear not that long ago right speaking of recession and again not that we're saying that city but the rest of the world is not looking great right I mean Europe's in trouble in the Chinese you never know Australia for crying out loud is slowing down faster than anybody else in that part of the world we live now are leading the global economy zones up. Today just today just because there's in the world are looking at as and wishing they were if you go back 3 or 4 months though there were a lot of people watching a ridiculous 35 days government shutdown they were watching the the markets just tumble as a result of the Fed modestly raising interest rates or watching the u.s. Squabbling about tariffs it doesn't always look as good but just today we can say that the u.s. Economy has survived and maybe even thrived through all of these pressures these disruptions from the public sector and the private sector showing momentum and the ability to power through it we've seen this before with with chaos but the ability to maintain that momentum it just means that the recession is not going to come from from old age for the expansion it's going to it's going to come from something else I'm also going to happen Catherine I want to since she mentioned it I want to really briefly to the Federal Reserve Larry Kudlow the president's chief economic adviser came out today as he is wont to do on days of good economic numbers and which is his right and he said what he thinks with the economy growing at 3.3 percent in your eyes rate in this quarter what we really ought to do is have the Federal Reserve cut interest rates explain why you think he's saying that. Well so there is some tension between those 2 claims right it's like the economy is going gangbusters but the Fed really needs to stimulate the economy I just want to step back for a moment and and remind everyone how bonkers it is that someone of his level in the executive branch is commenting on Fed policy at all by the way because for decades we have had a norm that no one in the executive branch talks about interest rates to preserve both the practice and perception of Central Bank independence so that in and of itself remains inappropriate and risky but why does he want to cut rates you know he's traditionally a hard money guy because presumably it will help Trump's reelection chances so I think that's how you square that circle city but also equally briefly I want to touch on Stephen Moore the president's not officially a nominee but a guy whose name has blurted out more than once he would like to see on the federal service more as you and Catherine I were talking about before we turn the microphones on seems to be doing a whole lot of press as it were for a man who's possibly going to be on the Reserve Board do you suppose his chances are as good now as they were a week and a half ago maybe. Well what Trump nominees and officials have learned is that it's very wise if you want to win over the president to get out on the airwaves especially get on television make a lot of noise show that you're a good brand maybe raise your value in the market he's doing all of that he's probably losing a lot of the Senate as he does that if you had enough to get by in a confirmation he's probably losing more of that as each day only has a loose right only has to score but. You know I don't see it as likely that this will be the nominee who ends up coming in and shaking up up the Fed But it's it's intertainment and that's what Trump world is about at the moment entertaining a word here about an article that appeared in Politico today that you edited Ben wired who does Morning money and for Target had a piece on basically if Trump could stay on message and the economy stays solid 2020 looks very good for him but he can't stay on message talking about that piece and Ben's take on that he the president of the United States is living in a dream scenario right now he has growth strength and he has wages rising he has unemployment falling falling he's out has got markets rocking rocketing to new highs it is a dream this is the thing you should be going out and talking about every day should be building confidence among businesses to get even stronger hiring should be doing all of that and there's a split screen life we're going through right now where he's just trying to do some of that but he's got the the Moeller thing hanging over him and still quite a bit of anger about the 26000 election and all of these things that just aren't quite there so if he if he could maintain this it's 18 months to the election there's a long way to go both for the economy and for the president but he's going to come now into a period in a few months where he can say that I am overseeing the longest expansion in American history and that is what a president would love to have to get reelected. And we don't see that message quite as much spitball it for me and I mean like in 15 seconds do you think the economy is an issue in 2020 or have we all forgot about it by then and we moved on to some else as we are want to do. If it's good it's not an issue right now can only help if it's bad and about half of economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal said that they expect a recession next year I don't know if it'll happen or not but if it's bad it could be an issue because presidents rightly or wrongly are held responsible for the state of the economy even if they're not actually controlling it Catherine Bell The Washington Post. At Politico on this Friday afternoon thanks you too thanks thanks on Wall Street's new record highs as Sudeep was saying courtesy of that g.d.p. Number we will have the details when we do the numbers. So g.d.p. And as Catherine and I danced around a little bit the fine print the numbers that went into that 3.2 percent growth number if you will this morning some of them were pretty unexpected the innards the guts in a good way yes but also in a temporary way as Marketplace's Nancy Marshall Genzer explains I'm going to start this story by taking the advice of Bank of America economist Ethan Harris I think it's important when you get numbers like says to kind of stand to do a little bit of the smoke from let's begin with trade surging exports of autos and food and falling imports contributed a full percentage point to g.d.p. Growth those strong export numbers offset weaker consumer spending but they're not expected to last because Harris says u.s. Manufacturers were just trying to get ahead of the next volley in the trade war so products before new rules of tariffs come in something else juicing g.d.p. Inventories u.s.b. . Misses have been stocking up expecting consumers to keep up their spending but then but Vino is u.s. Chief economist at s. And p. Global she says those manufacturers and retailers need to unload their inventories before they restock or make more if they don't sell and that means that in mentors won't be a contributor going forward and that could be a drag later on still economists say the u.s. Economy will keep growing even without these temporary boosts Lidia soar is senior u.s. Economist at Oxford Economics So the economy remains on a sunny footing although it is slowing to soar expects g.d.p. To grow a little more than 2 percent this year a far cry from this quarter's 3.2 percent barring any big surprises that is in Washington I'm Nancy Marshall Genzer from Marketplace Amazon reported quarterly profits yesterday a record 3 and a half $1000000000.00 January through March because basically it has become the go to place to buy almost anything and get it in 2 days for free provided of course you pony up $101000.00 a year for Amazon Prime Wal-Mart and Target and all the rest though have gotten into that game free 2 day shipping and no membership fees so Amazon's next trick go to the head of the class Yes $1.00 day free shipping it's going to take a poly cash to make that happen though but Bezos and company are guessing it's going to be worth it Marketplace's Scott Tong has our $800000000.00 That's what Amazon will shell out just this quarter to quote evolve toward one day free shipping and those costs may rise predicts analyst Tuna Amobi at c.f.r. a Research he says a big expense is that last step in the transport chain when Amazon's local partners bring that box of top selling chocolate truffles to your doorstep this is something that will require the collaboration with that competition partners like that it's a new p.s. There was a report out from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York a couple of weeks ago that is both timely and alarming there is in this figures from the end of 2018 there is one point $46.00 trillion dollars worth of student debt in this economy alarming because a trillion and a half dollars Hello timely because we're getting to that time of year when a whole new chunk of college graduates is going to have to start paying down their student loans and for those college seniors degree in hand and hopefully with a job there is also a whole bunch of worry about their financial futures Marketplace's Mitchell Hartman talked with 2 soon to be graduates in some very different circumstances the private liberal arts school Whitman College is where 22 year old Rachel Glover has racked up $30000.00 in debt that's about average for college grads who take out federal student loans it's funny because I try to avoid thinking about this secret as a. Much as I possibly can because it's stressful the Environmental Studies major is sitting on Whitman sweeping green lawn on a windy day in Walla Walla Washington surrounded by students throwing frisbees hanging out and studying this year tuition room and board at Whitman is $66000.00 Glover grew up in Portland Maine where her dad works in insurance her mom at a grocery store I have a combination of financial aid scholarships and loans even after that my parents are helping pay for like the remainder she could have done college a lot cheaper I considered moving back home and going to state school where I could have gone for almost for free but something held her back from transferring I believed in the idea that going to a small private school would help me in a way that a state school wouldn't you put it in past hands I believed Do you still I definitely hope it but the flipside of that hope is the terrible fear that I've just put myself in thousands of dollars of debt and given myself no real advantage she's afraid what she's given herself is a huge financial mountain to climb with no clear idea how she's going to scale it she'll stick around and wallow all of this summer to finish her senior thesis but after that she doesn't have a job lined up isn't sure what career she wants to pursue a huge thing of the debt is done is made it feel inconceivable almost that I will be able to buy a home or having kids or even really buy a car just rent and groceries is hard enough borrowing for college can lead to buyer's remorse so financially in the end there as long pieces that a college Verrinder Oregon right where she's filling out financial aid forms to transfer to Portland State University the 41 year old mother of twins started at a local community college when her kids were infants and she's been taking. Classes for 5 years already she wishes she'd known how much debt she'd be taking on I think when it's all said and done because I'm a single mom it's taking me longer a 4 year degree is going to end up costing me close to $80000.00 she's borrowed $50000.00 so far and even though finishing her be a program in human resources is still a ways off she's worried it's terrifying when you hear these stories that there's no guarantee that you're going to get a job I'm so far and now that I don't want to quit and have all this debt on my back do you regret having started on this path Absolutely I would have sought going into this career 1st before going to school for it but she also didn't think she could reach her financial life goals working in restaurants and social service jobs like she did before going to college she's hoping eventually to buy a house but her student loans are in the way it's overwhelming comics I'm going to have to pay a month I mean you have this idea that you're going to keep it under control but it's almost like a credit card you just keep going and going Hayes is hoping once she graduates to earn enough to pay down her student loans before her twin daughters now $5.00 start racking up college debt of their own I'm Mitchell Hartman for Marketplace. There's an architectural preservation thing going on out in some parts of rural Texas people are trying to save historic dance halls built usually around the turn of the last century immigrant German and Czech farming communities using their kind of barn like these buildings are there use for dances or parties or just to hash out community business sometimes but with changing traditions and musical tastes as well saving those buildings is an uphill economic fight from the marketplace hub of Houston Public Media. Has that story. Fyi this is the kind of music you might have heard at a dance hall in the early 1960 is a song recorded in 1929 by Texas Czech orchestra bunch of a Cesc a capella historian in Texas music expert Joni Petoskey says dance halls weren't just for music they're also like a town square the 1st building where everybody meets is a dance hall in it's use not just for dances but she is for social functions it's when the community mates and wants to discuss affairs they all meet at the dance hall through the years traditional waltzes and polkas morphed into western swing and country music and eventually the dance of choice became the boot scootin Texas 2 step. Bobby Flores in the Yellow Rose band at a historic call in Goliad Texas last year Petoskey says the participatory experience of a dance hall is what draws people after the songs over people are applauding and cheering they're catching their breath and are going back to their seats and get another beer and get rested up for the next song there's been renewed interest in these halls in recent years they can hold hundreds of people so some have been renovated and turned into modern music venues with professional sound systems others like la but he had turned Verein strive for a more traditional feel but pull in money through wedding rentals. Royce Smith gold open a heavy wooden door into law but he was born and raised in here my parents my grandfathers everybody put this here a move for me and so that's when I just fell in line there's a minimalist beauty to the place white walled exterior smooth wooden dance floor drop down windows that let the country breeze in a nonprofit Schmidt leads owns the hall he says the group was broke just a few years ago but now has 40 or $50000.00 in the bank mostly thanks to rentals for things like weddings and we get them all the way from Atlanta to California to all over the country it is. Well the word of mouth I mean basically they came through here they wanted to friends got married here still that business has limits there's only so much you can charge for an old non air conditioned building in Texas and then there's the upkeep on their old buildings they take a lot of maintenance dead Fleming heads up a group called Texas dance hall preservation which has counted more than 100 historic halls across the state the group helps halls come up with new business models in promoting events the group also distributes grants for preservation work it's got about $30000.00 on hand for that this year Fleming says there's not one way to save a hall it's a matter of what makes the best sense at the time and being open to the possibilities of change. Down the road John throws unlocks the door to around top dance hall another historic building that's taking a for profit approach Priss he's basically breaking even round up also hosts weddings and the occasional live band but Prez pulls in money from a restaurant and bar next door as well he says a big challenge is that it's getting more expensive to throw a dance the price of entertainment and entertainers are skyrocketing to try to you know pay with the musicians or do your insurances and everything like that it's dead Fleming says a broader cultural shift is key to saving the halls if the next generation doesn't step up to really engage with these kind of places these places are going to die a slow death because many of the halls that are nonprofit are community halls are basically managed and maintained by people in their seventies and eighties Texas lawmakers are considering legislation that could help it would let small music venues applied to get a cut of the money back from alcohol sales taxes in Houston I'm Travis is Vinick from market. Friends Muslims. Buddhist Hindu We all do business together we all go for celebrations you know Christmas or anything we all get together he says he still feels that way even after last Sunday's bombings but not everyone in the neighborhood agrees we cannot trust them not because we were like families we cannot trust on people who are staying here the Muslims that's James Clifford Francis he's retired and ethnic tumble Christian married to a Sinhalese Christian we were like one family actually we fit the Muslims they come to our house they have we have parties and all those things we were living happily . You're telling me now that trust is shattered Yes. That sentiment helps explain why there were no services today at the 200 year old coach a cottage a mosque some other mosques in the city did open despite pleas from the government and religious leaders not to but the mosque is just a few 100 yards away from St Anthony's Church mosque chairman h. Michael Sullivan n.p.r. News Colombo now we're going to look at what's known about the people who carried out those attacks last Sunday here's how Sri Lanka's defense minister Rawan which described them earlier this week they play nicely played independent so that is a very active this is some of them have studied. Other countries fight related. Financially independent and well educated well Pamela Constable is covering the story for The Washington Post and she joins us from Colombo Welcome to all things considered very glad to join you before we get into the individual stories of these attackers give us an overview of what this group looks like collectively. Well we don't know about all of them and we know about some of them and yes they seem to be some of them are middle class some of them a little educated several of them are or were in the case of the suicide bombers remarkably the children of the sons of one a very wealthy and prominent Sri Lankan businessman Yeah Wii's attackers seem to have gotten the lion's share of the attention partially because they were connected to this well known spice trader in Sri Lanka tell us about that yes I mean obviously we don't know him but we've read a lot about him from the authorities here and there's been interviews of his neighbors and others you know he's described as a prominent well connected wealthy generous a lenth fossick a gentleman well respected by all it's not entirely clear whether he knew what his sons were up to although it would seem difficult to imagine that he didn't but we don't know that he has been arrested obviously he's being interrogated. But it does if there is such an income grew it is there and in addition to the 2 sons of this wealthy spice merchant there was also the wife of one of those sons who I understand blew herself up and killed 2 of her children in the process well as well several officers Yes So obviously we're talking about extremely dedicated and ideologically convinced people who were involved in something that we know about from other situations in other countries we have no indication that there was any such movement silk ideologically here that would have you know brainwashed were influenced or persuaded you know successful Sri Lankans from the privileged classes to forsake everything and become you know she would sidle ideological warriors. Is there any understanding of how connected these people may have been to ISIS which has claimed responsibility for the attack that's quite serious still what the authorities are saying is obviously as we know I think claimed to be connected to it but there's been no that's as far as I know no sort of hard evidence or proof or further explanation of what that means so it could simply have been a source of inspiration it could have been more it could have been financial They could have had people sent there or gone to their world to training but we don't really have any we have not been shown or heard any evidence. That and it made there is speculation that I think some sort of trying to coin a connection that may not need a barracks but that all that's really don't know me now but certainly be ideology that this is such an escalation of violence against Christians do you have a sense of why and why now now we really don't it seem to come out of the balloon the whole nation was shocked and surprised when there's no particular reason why it would have happened now or against the target constable of the Washington Post thank you for joining us you're very welcome we're. Weekend Edition Saturday no job in the military is off limits to women nowadays should women be required to register for a military draft Congress has the question to a ribbon commission learn. To play n.p.r. Or your station. From n.p.r. News. Secretary of State Mike Pompei o. Is marking a year on the job speaking to employees about what he calls the ethos of the agency Pompei 0 took over a State Department that was reeling from budget cuts and a hiring freeze and Pompei a promise to restore its swagger N.P.R.'s Michele Kelemen takes a look. At the State Department employees including a new class of diplomats were greeted with music in the main lobby and a speech by the secretary who one failed a massive new billboard with a mission statement an inspirational. And unifying statement the captures the attitude that I hope will become part of the State Department d.n.a. . And so without further ado I'd like to unveil it here. The statement begins I am a champion of American diplomacy and it speaks about professionalism and respect it's about disagreeing without being uncivil and building up our institution not tearing it down with journalist secretary Pompei o can be combative dismissing many questions as quote ridiculous or just wrong he once accused members of Congress of caterwauling about the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and in Cairo he gave a speech blasting President Obama for misreading the Middle East it was here here in this city that another American stood before you he told you that radical Islamist terrorism does not stem from an ideology. He told you that 911 let my country to abandon its ideals particularly in the Middle East former State Department official Aaron David Miller was stunned to hear palm Peo criticize a u.s. President in Cairo while praising Egypt's hardline leader that's highly unusual idiosyncratic and frankly I would argue very destructive Miller advised 6 secretaries of state and says usually partisan politics are set aside as America's top diplomat travels the world I think that clearly in the partisan polarized dysfunctional world in which we live has completely broken down and I think my palm Peo probably emerges as the most partisan secretary of state he says Pompei Oh has done little the smooth over relations in Europe take this speech the secretary gave last year in Brussels where he criticized just about every international institution from the European Union and the United Nations to the International Criminal Court sometimes it's not popular to buck the status quo to call out that which we all see but sometimes refuse to speak about pale calls this principled real ism Miller argues that this my way or the highway approach is no way to conduct diplomacy the mood at the State Department though has improved under Pompei o the secretary gets together with employees in his meet with Mike sessions and he lifted a hiring freeze imposed by his predecessor Rex Tillerson that has made some difference says retiring diplomat Piper Campbell the State Department's out of the i.c.u. But is still in the hospital we are still suffering from highly ineffective policy process chaotic decision making there is a feeling in the building that there are important voices important perspectives that are not being fully aired that's one reason she's leaving that apartment after 3 decades her last day was today so she stopped by to hear Pompei o talk about. The department if those the presentation and the emphasis may be something new but the substance is absolutely the heart of what foreign service officers believe Michele Kelemen n.p.r. Player has been barred from his team over suspicion that he abused his 3 year old son the Kansas City Chiefs say wide receiver Terry kill cannot take part in any team activities including offseason workouts on a newly released audiotape to people said to be hill and his fiance discuss a police investigation into the child's broken arm on the tape his fiance accuses hill of causing the injury Joining us now is N.P.R.'s Tom Goldman Hi Tom hi ari catch us up on the background to the story I understand prosecutors initially said they would not file any charges in this potential case of child abuse that's right the d.a. Said he thinks a crime you. Was committed against the child just couldn't prove who did it so on Wednesday of this week there were no charges filed against hill or his fiance who I should add is also now pregnant with twins and now there is this audiotape describe where it came from and what Senate yeah it emerged the day after the prosecutor made his announcement about new charges it was 1st played on a local t.v. Station in Kansas City Casey t.v. And it was described as a tape made in March while Hill and his fiance Crystal español were walking through the Dubai International Airport now we haven't independently verify that it's actually Hill and Aspinall but the tape is out there nobody has denied its authenticity in fact the Chiefs Hills team say they are deeply disturbed by what's on it the whole tape is about 11 minutes long we have a couple of short excerpts on this 1st one español appears to accuse hill of breaking their son's arm Hill speaks 1st and the child's name I should say is bleeped out on the tape I didn't do nothing and wait in. Line I don't want to go. Through this is that it was a lot of things on the doors and a lot about what happened all right now Ari in this next clip Hill appears to threaten Aspinall here it is he's terrified of you. But it's not it's not right it's to horrify he has to or you need to be serious about it. So Tom what have prosecutors said about this tape we haven't heard anything publicly from the prosecutors but there are a number of reports out today already that the d.a. Has reopened the case in light of this new audiotape and what about kill Has he issued a statement he has he released a statement saying in part quote I love and support my family above anything my son's health and happiness is my. Number one priority I contacted his lawyers today they declined to comment because of what they called confidentiality laws they have said that Hill maintains his innocence and that he has cooperated with law enforcement Tom this painful and upsetting story is unfolding in the middle of one of the N.F.L.'s biggest offseason events the n.f.l. Draft so what's the impact and that's right well the draft goes on of course but this is the kind of publicity the league obviously hates especially as you point out in the middle of this crown jewel moment that the n.f.l. Always loves as a way to you know keep sports fans consumed by the n.f.l. Even when there's no football being played so bad p.r. Again for a league you know that seems to often deal with controversy and also for the Chiefs which has dealt dealt with this problem in the past yeah you're absolutely right chiefs are one of the best teams in the n.f.l. They almost got to the Super Bowl last season but in fact controversy has been following them even before this week Kansas City star running back Kareem hunt he led the league in rushing yards his rookie season in 2017 last year he was videotaped shoving and kicking a woman and he was released by the team just a few months ago also the Chiefs just traded for a top defensive lineman named Frank Clark he was arrested on a domestic violence charge in 2014 and kicked off the University of Michigan football team that's n.p.r. Sports correspondent Tom Goldman thanks Tom You're welcome Ari. 23 year old dancer Rudolph Nuria was just becoming a household name in Russia when he became a Cold War sensation by defecting to the west movie critic Bob Mondello says that incident which took place in a Paris airport in 1961 is the centerpiece of a new narry of biopic called the White Cross charismatic Yes brilliant sure but a team player the film's Rudolf Nureyev is not at a glittering but tense welcoming reception in Paris Soviet dancers stand apart peering warily at their French hosts Nuria ignoring the glares of his k.g.b. Handlers crosses the room I know for you on your piano local and your Clermont I soon dance magazines we were wondering if you were allowed to speak to us I decided to give the bridge over for motive these events tonight if I had dust you would remember them all right then not a blushing flower in his brazen overture is earning him admiring press and once he's triumphed on stage invitations to dinner and nightclubs which is handler's reluctantly allow as long as he has chaperone Witold lot to speak to furnace as special remote for and outsource love to go out with them look to eat with them stay together Socialists only want you frightened What ever do construction is a street can do this to me you know but when you get back home can they make your life difficult that life back home is something the film shows us in flashbacks and in Russian with subtitles flashbacks to a childhood rendered in black and white and to a teenage Rudy struggling to catch up with his peers he didn't get into a major ballet school until he was 17 and then drove himself so hard that his instructors wife started bringing him soup to keep up his strength after an injury she and her husband who's played gently and in Russian by the film's director Ray Fine's taking Rudy into their one room apartment and from there things get emotionally and physically complicated as one of Maria was made. Well lovers' notes we like living with the suits who does it and that it's the friends talk about things I don't want to be friends of his played by Oleg event Co a Ukrainian dancer making his acting debut here and a credible one his strength though and the reason finds cast him is the film's dance sequences where when he's not whirling dervish like he seems at times to simply hang in the air he makes arrogance understandable even as it annoys his handlers and leads to the airport confrontation the film has always been building to when the k.g.b. Tells Nuria he's not going to London with the rest of the company but back to Moscow they're trying to kidnap me who's panicked he begs his new French friends to stay with him and one of them alerts the airport police the rest as they say is history my name is there that's not if I want to stay in your country I want political asylum the film structure is unnecessarily complicated and may leave audiences confused about what's going on in the head of its impetuous young hero but white crow is smart about explaining Nuria place in the art form he championed in an era when choreographers tended to treat male dancers as heroic statues who lifted the ballerinas who got the applause this insolent Soviet 23 year old insisted on holding the audience's gaze himself and for a brief moment for reasons both on point and politically pointed the whole world watched I'm Bob Mondello.
