News. Hello I mean you're listening to the b.b.c. World Service and the sound which is backstage at b s t Hyde Park this is an enormous music festival spread across 3 weekends in July in the biggest park in sexual London and this year's lineup has attracted 7 big big music names Bruno Mars d.n.c. Eat Pink Floyd's Roger Waters Everett Clapton collegiate Paul Simon's final show his last ever tours x. Place here the son Tom at Michael booth played the q. Or festivals big business it's estimated that the music festival industry is worth the rebuilding and dollars globally and it's growing see that this year's Barclaycard presents British Summer Time Hyde Park the sun is shining and the policies happening at the arts I was backstage to bring you a feel of what it's like to be in the crowd and what goes on behind the scenes to make sure it all runs to me and of course we'll be talking to some of the performers it's a lovely day I think it's like 28 degrees it's really really hot but it's just a lovely vibe we've got to play with some legends recently we play with Average White Band the other day I play with a Sister Sledge 2 days ago we've played with now Rogers before so we're accruing our funk library growing up in the city of New Orleans I like to see that New Orleans as a country inside of a country when you come up play music and being from there you have a commitment to represent what would made us who we are the stamina. My whole life you know I have the passion to for the stage and I've been doing the same amount of energy since I was like teenager this is a beautiful. Naomi skillets dn c. Is it good really good so do all of you speak a smattering of Korean Ok I'm not here and they go by always we've got some Ok I'm hungry. I would beg and I think there's a grey suit d n c e for listeners who don't know what is the meaning behind the name of the band the short and sweet it's could be a reminder of dancing having a good time for us it was a misspell and we're not perfect and we thought that it could kind of work for us and everything else was taken so we were did see you guys have a reputation for getting everybody up down saying and is that something that you have to build your own energy for you know we don't really think too much we go out there we play how we feel we want to even exchange of energy so we've given everything we have and we hope to get back the same energy from all the people in the audience when we look at some of your massive tracks a cake by the ocean being watched I don't know how many hundreds of millions of times on You Tube and in tears a collaboration 7 You've collaborated with a really interesting divests artist so pollutions of Do You Think I'm Sexy is more shit then something with Nicki Minaj kissing strange I mean how do you choose who to collaborate with while we are chosen people. Were solo. Good to collab with songs such awesome legendary like artist like like Rob story in the can not it was so much fun funk music is something that that is common in for between all of us we've all grew up with different backgrounds but funk is where we meet in the middle and rock and roll so we've got to play with some legends recently we play with Average White Band the other day I play with a Sister Sledge 2 days ago we've played with now Rodgers before so we were accruing our funk library but. You have been so busy that and I do wonder how you keep your energy up whether it's right now in this interview on the stage is it fitness is it food is it levels of fun what what do you do it's really the stage for us like you and I the I the Tigers It's the stage for us and if we can get up there and do what we love then we know everything else is going to work itself out all the months where we're we're on and off to off time and we're going crazy but he tells her about it a stage will be fine so it's a gentle and gets you going adrenaline in just being alive in its own music this helps us what is the a little bit we won't name the brand because we're on the Vegas What if you go in there this is Grant granddaddy's cough medicine I doubt if that little bit of bourbon maybe and then all wound up the mole boys have to make you go from strength to strength thank you so very much. World Service I'm Nikki Beatty and we're about British Summer Time High drama a huge music festival in the heart of London's kilometer west and hawks west and there are thousands and thousands of fans about me basking in the sunshine tossing to the sounds of the fans they love a new act that they'll love opticians day always great when you get everyone's bus in are quite like the fact that there's a lot of children families that spark good vibe and to be fair this is a 1st ever festival concert other being to I've always been a bit scared because of see it with all the crowd and things like that so I didn't think it would be it's it's good it's ways but you know I think it's quite nice and friendly and so yes this is a very good. Some believe it was last year was a little bit but more like crowd with just the spirit is a lot of. Them believable crowd and I think you. Know most was great he's a nice calm crowd and yeah it's actually a good day out for the family we wouldn't be good for kids but so far so good so whatever and the vibe is going to be on point and that makes a good festival I was fantastically battle of the day we've really enjoyed it haven't been before and we've come back next year with me definitely it's really vibrant I mean I really don't do a concert with this is boy as a birthday present for my wife and I've come because I like Bruno Mars but. The bonds that's going on before I'm a really clear this food year there's drink beer this done swell more you want to spin it's been a great day so far it's amazing this loads of people here and it's lovely everyone's chilled to the lads I just saw a guy with it in his bit it was waves that was the only thing I sold that was way to me it beats a pink slip it. Gets his way the deliriously happy. So it's 3 really satisfied customers. At Bestival of this scale and then. The night they show the man behind the festival director. They so much that has to go right with the biggest challenge if you've seen it coming today I mean we're landlocked and you can't just all of sudden drive dozens and dozens of trucks in any time that you so wish to do so so yes so that side of how the event is actually Bill how the infrastructure is is installed that's arguably the biggest challenge there is because as I said before we can't just turn up with 60 trucks on the morning of the day that we want to start to build much as you can of a stadium for instance car. Film from these difficult everywhere is a challenge everywhere and none more so than when you're in the middle of the West End of London again the story in a ton of problems with bands playing here and people saying wasn't fit for purpose because you couldn't play loud enough and you know it's a tripartite equation that needed to be sold which was obviously the band the fans and the community and you had to we had to resolve it for all of those to load the fans are like You're so therefore they get you know they criticize the band and therefore the bands don't want to come. Too loud or too unmanaged I should point out and he's a problem for the community so you know we went and spent a ton of money invested in most latest technology and we actually recreated what you see out there Hyde Park and. In another location and we put all the monitoring points in there we put a full sound system in there and we just tested it and tested and tested and tested it for weeks and all that investment paid off because we actually fit then found the right sound system that we needed the right configuration of delays and ever since we've done that balance of playing is allowed in Hyde Park and any major music force in the country which he would have been. 6 years ago you know I would have thought that would be that would be impossible I thought so I think that the quality of equipment has changed dramatically as well in the science now which is behind a lot of the speaker systems is dramatically different from what it was a few years ago whereas before you know the way that a lot of these speak up and cities are intimate again today is just the throes of sound as officially as possible you know as far as possible and that's the last thing that we want to hear you know we want it to be contained we don't want it to be thrown as far as possible so there's a lot of noise canceling technology you can do computer by systems now which actually allow you to create sound field and limit the throw of the actual of the actual sound and that's really one of the tricks to what we've been out to achieve . We don't play a new song now I think the marketplace is evolved dramatically and for the better I think that the the bonds that fans now place on outdoor music experiences are on a par with what they would expect in an indoor music experience and we set out from the start you know what I always thought it was just a lazy excuse that the service levels would drop just because you're in a field and you know there's no reason for that you know the technology is there the expertise is there within the industry to actually deliver a 5 star experience just because we're outdoors the weather is the weather you know if it rains it right in the sea that's going to in some cases of the going to dampen down the experience somewhat but outside of that the technologies that to deliver the same level of production experience that you would have indoors so there is a romantic view that of those types of shows it took place like the Stones in 69 where you open the gates produced for the stage and half a 1000000 people turn up and from evade producer perspective you know you want to operate in a very controlled environment which is incredibly safe and obviously you know the world has moved on substantially for health and safety and everything else since you know in the last 50 years I think the biggest aspect is actually wanting to live it with delivering the show you actually want to people to experience both the artist and the fashions and you know in order to do that and hopefully you would have seen some of these b.s.t. Hypot shows they're incredibly you know well produced very very high production values and very very high customer service values and that's what we like to do you know just open the gate and have a 1000000 people turning up in the not be sufficient toilets or sufficient bars on the food was rubbish and you could hear it and you couldn't see it and stuff that would be a nightmare for me I wouldn't want to be part of that. King vs the Hyde hot festival director reflecting on a hot season festival that's in safety and. To a deeper century to get you can join the conversation to just use the hash tag b.b.c. On our. Show and then show us one of the 5 lights of today's lineup his name gives you a clue as to the instrument he plays but let me tell you a little bit more about him he's 33 years old he's from New Orleans the birthplace of jazz and as well as his solo career 5 albums and counting he's played with big names like Mark Ronson Celo Green Eric Clapton Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and he's here fresh from appearing as the special guest with the Rolling Stones and Poland I grabbed a few minutes later on the show as he earlier to ask what he'd learned from performing with just a showmanship and how he commanded 60000 people and Ira thing just seems to be so comfortable like they were playing in their backyard with all of those people and and they were very strong you know even at that age they were very strong and everything they were their commitment to the sound of music or we have a song we were playing was very very inspiring to me and it just makes me want to go out there and be even stronger. And the showmanship that Mick Jagger's have than our lows dance moves and moving around a stage it just makes me want to move even more so is it was a great lesson and a great thing to be able to put on my resume that we actually play with the Rolling Stones the biggest band in the world it was just my band and their band but I've performed with Mick Jagger before and I keep riches and New Orleans and but never with the Rolling Stones with on this actual show we just played before them we were in New Orleans Louisiana last year for the Arts our on tour and we had Christians got to turn a day or 2 on the stage we also had the Hot 8 Brass Band and what I notice is that all of you musicians from that region have a real commitment to the city to the. People to the office and the music that where does that come from growing up in the city of New Orleans I like to say that New Orleans is a country inside of a country you know we have our own music we have our own language some time we have our own food and it's such a magical place that I can't really explain but when you come up playing music and being from there you have. A commitment to represent what made us who we are and we all have a job to do our interpretation of whatever style of New Orleans music that we want to play but it's just one of those places you can never take out of our heart and I don't I don't think I will commitment would be like that if we were from any other place in the world but New Orleans has as a hold on us and our sound and we definitely understand that we wouldn't be playing music or being able to represent the city if it wouldn't be for that city and we have a lot of great mentors and people that pass along knowledge and different things to us and and it's just up to us to do it and take it to the next level so that I don't know I probably have a voodoo spell on a lot so it's just a magical place that I really can't understand and we never had a discussion any musician from no we never said down and thought about why is it why does it have a big hold on us but it's just one of those things you know to see some youngster playing in the street right now they have the same commitment it goes without saying and it's it's just a beautiful place to be and I reach everybody to come see what I'm talking about because I can't really explain it and to eat the great food. Great music great food and lazing people speaking of New Orleans you were in a number of episodes of trim they went to the. Post the levees breaking post Katrina more acting jobs coming up for you now well you know the latest thing I was a part of showed up in The Simpsons when you are surrounded. By people here a yellow light that you've really made to in life is that right yeah I like the thing so you know it's a it was a such a great I once again I was able to represent the great city of New Orleans and you know to trim a thing as far as acting go it you know they called me and I was able to do it and I really enjoy it but I'm really focusing on music and have some other jobs come up to walk and I have time and it permitted that I can do it I'll look into it and try to do it but I'm still working on becoming a better musician so that's always my focus for. Your operations the legend is there anybody that you are dying to collaborate with right now. Yeah like to collaborate with Eminem and Dr Dre and 9 Inch Nails all together if I can pull that up yeah if I could get them all together I would be great if not I'll take them along out of town one by one and tell us why you know I'm just a big fan of all those guys music and I grew up listening to it and. And I'm always inspired and trying to take bits and pieces from that the put into my new all in sound and I make a big musical gumbo but I saw 9 Inch Nails that a day before and Montreaux and the light show was great to songs are great and I didn't want to show to stop but I'm always listening to different things and and always inspired by different things outside of the city of New all and so I can have a great influence around the world to some kids I want to play the trombone a trumpet a woman or whatever. Maybe and let them know that we don't have to stick to one particular style you can do whatever you like so what sort of sets a you playing set b.s.t. Hyde Park are we going to be rock n roll you know it's going to be a lot of funk a lot of high energy dance music and represent New Orleans the way we do it and we'll have a great time I've been hearing about this place for a long time legendary venue here and I'm just really really excited to be able to be here and also see my good friend Bruno Mars perform and he's won when yanks merely. Prez's me in President hell out of me to not a level and I've been able to work with him in the studio on certain occasions for a couple of years and just to be able to see him perform the night that means I got to step and step it up and do the best I can because I know he's following the. Black white Hispanic whatever it is you can see all of these people at my shows and you can see a mob jamming getting together and and we all dancing in one and one harmony and the most important thing to me is just like what no judgment to no one which is here and a name a love in music happens to be one of the strongest points back and bring that message apart on stage or whatever it may be without saying it you know it's just an unspoken thing but my most important thing coming from the city of New Orleans is that we love everyone no matter what it may be how you want to live your life we support you and that's the way that I grew up and as the way I was raised and it's always been about love my mom always told me we play music or you should always play music the way that we do here in New Orleans which. It's always about Joy you know no matter if we play out of a funeral in the city is always we enjoying life and celebrating a life so that's my whole purpose is just to get up there celebrate life and bring some sounds of New Orleans to people to where we can bring love and unity because I grew up playing in the street parade in New all and so we touched people did touch as we're able to dance with him and see him so I have to feel that connection it is a very hot day by London standards you're probably more used to this level of heat in New Orleans what do you do to prepare for a show like this where you go have a little lie down there oh we have hot cup of tea What will you do I'll just go get my horn to start warming up and we will jam in the dressing room as if we plan on Bourbon Street and we'll do a parade in the dressing room or outside and we just get ready but knock a lie down. I'll be too low key for the show yeah and I'll try to take a nap before a show one time and I was just too comfortable and relaxed you know I like to have the energy but before my show I don't really do much besides warming up my voice and warming up the Han and then we find ourselves in a jam session and then manager has to say stand there actually go play on stay there we had so much fun and then after that will walk off stage plan and finished a jam session. World news. Welcome back to the art backstage at the b.b.c. World Service I'm Nikki Beatty and we are sweltering and partying for you at the British Summer Time Hyde Park Music Festival a 6 day series of cancers held in the glorious surroundings of Hyde Park in central London the line ups are fantastic and we've already spoken to d.n.c. And Trombone Shorty Bruno Mars' he's headlining today can lead Syria and veterans like Pink Floyd's Roger Waters Eric Clapton and pull Simon have all delighted their fans on the stage is here there is something for everyone if you can afford the ticket prices the refreshment charges and the price of a sun protection factor lotion it's our hot top London day I think it's lovely I mean it is the 1st time I'm come here I just moved last year to the u.k. We didn't know it was like this kind of event so. Are you already knew which showed to you know that. We just saw them there and they were really amazing they shared everything everyone was credible is this is amazing honestly it's my 1st festival. And. These festivals are larger economy but really Africa is a must see for coming here today Stephanie chamomile there are different every time in many movies Vesa party b.s.t. Is really is wonderful just positive ever and happy for us for some very different stages have a different feel so whatever you want you can go and find you know your header like 7 o 7 the same reason and music is great and visitors from all around the world are enjoying the facilities the atmosphere and of course the music here today Hyde Park has plenty of previous form as a venue for big music concerts the Rolling Stones thing with Lee played a free concert here in 1989. The crowd was estimated to have been up to how many people well things have changed a lot since and I speak to a man who really knows just about everything there is today about the music scene His name is Emanuel overall he's the American editor of Music Week magazine in Washington d.c. So how much did ticket prices affect experience ticket prices do matter especially for younger audiences because they will choose festivals based on how much the whole experience is going to cost them then you have festivals that are definitely made for people who are over $3035.00 who can afford 15225350 pounds or dollars and you have the super super rich who can afford to v.o.i.p. Passes $81500.00 or $2000.00 or pounds and that's the whole economy also has changed because you have people who make choices based on the kind of comforts they can access and how much is going to cost them and just how big is the festival scene internationally well the music festival scene internationally is pretty big. And keeps on growing you have to put that into the context of the global economy of the live industry it's about $20000000000.00 globally the festival industry is probably about 25 to 30 percent of that and probably a bit more if you add all the sponsorship because once the ship is about a $2000000000.00 industry with the live music so you know you're talking about a significant business and when perform live concerts and gigs ease the money that they are reaping in also to do with the merchandising that is being sold merchandising has always been an important part but it's getting bigger and bigger Economist have a sense of you know how much you can put into pricing so that goes into the price of the ticket but also in the price of merchandising how much can you extract. Act from your fans without being too greedy and that's it's a fine balance but if you are if you have a dedicated group of followers they will buy the t. Shirt the sweatshirts the you know the caps or whatever you're going to try and sell them can be about 10 percent of your revenues when you're touring you know big bands like Metallica out of stones make a lot of money through merchandising and just. On the evolution of festivals What's the biggest changes you've seen in festivals save the u.s. The biggest changes in festival is the way consumers are treated the word I use a lot is the experience but it's true it's how can you make people who come for 3 days how can you make their experience the best possible and another trend that is very interesting is that festival try to be greener How do you manage all the the recycling and things like that and some festivals are very good at that you know you only have paper cups you are a couple reasons made of bamboo or you know wood that can be recycled things like that so that's a new trend Another aspect is there is a huge movement and festivals pledged to have as many female performers as male performers and I think at the moment the ratio is 80 percent 20 percent and the ideal is to get to a 5050 balance that also is a major revolution what makes a great festival is a combination of different things music matters of course but the environment matters the quality of the sound matters the quality of the food good access to toilets that's fundamental if you look at how professional the whole thing is from the parking Stu how you get from the parking to the gates how you pass the gates once you are inside the festival where are the facilities and so this has become a huge business imagine you're creating a city for 3 days out of North. And suddenly you have 180000 people gathering It's incredible in terms of the just ticks Emmanuelle are grown there explaining the organizing process behind or didn't music festivals if you want to share your best best of all experience get in touch using the hash tag b b c arts hour. You're listening to the arts our backstage on the b.b.c. World Service I'm Nikki Beatty back to the acts on stage today Naomi Scorsese a hugely talented British singer and actress last year she played the Pink Power Ranger next year you'll be able to see her as Princess Jasmine in Disney's live action remake of Aladdin and there's a rumor that she's going to star in the next Charlie's Angels movie but today it's all about her music Ok Naomi what sort of set did you do today how did it feel out there it was lovely It's a lovely day the sun is shining it's I think it's like 28 degrees it's really really hot but now it's just a lovely vibe you know you come out I was the 1st one so you know warming up everyone but it was it was so much fun it was so much family and I have faith you're very religious so how does it influence your music for example. It's a good question I think it's more. I mean is more the idea that I believe everything creative comes from God anyway and any gift that I have I believe it is a gift from God So I think that's more how I see I don't you know sit there and go Ok I need to buy a song about you know b. Has to be spiritual I think it's a natural thing I naturally you know I grew up in church I grew up listening to gospel music and voices like Kim Burrell and you know some of these really amazing artists and which I think influences me and I definitely want my music to have meaning I think it's important even with pop even with commercial music you can still be saying something it doesn't always have to be super deep but. I think yes . Thinking about the message you're sending out there is important so your acting career is going from strength to strength your music career was going from strength to strength what you ever got to have to be choose between the 2 music was my 1st love so music was something that I I mean I started out in music I started writing and and acting just happened and took took me away which was the best you know accident you could ever ask for don't get me wrong but it's given I think it's actually worked out really well because it's given me time I think sometimes when people enter it with with a sound or something a very young age it can be difficult because you don't always know what you like so I'm really glad I've been patient and just take my time with it so that now I'm in a place where I'm just so excited for people to hear the music that I feel like it's going to be my coming out kind of entry point obviously the people that listen to my music previously then great they can they come along and and they come along with me which is wonderful Were you cannot promise not to jump on. a triple threat rising stars who cannot sing and dance she's about to be big I'm Neki baby and you're listening to the b.b.c. World Service and this is the arts hour backstage at British Summer Time Hyde Park and I'm having a blast I'm wandering around backstage I may see the our chairs and the people working behind the scenes to make it all go seriously the way your lovely I love my job one of the artists are you really really wanted to be a b.s.t. Height was Charlie Wilson so he has been in the music industry making music for decades I 1st knew him when he was part of the gap bounds I love that. He's now a solo artist He's had 11 Grammy nominations and 2 days artists like Kanye and Ralph all have huge admiration for him. He's outstanding. So. You aren't just admired Charlie find the many contemporary musicians and x. To day you actually work with them so Nicky Minaj Conniff the well Snoop Dog. The list goes on but how do these collaborations actually work do the artists come to you was the god daddy of groove them Funk do you go to them on all all the globe originals of that I've been on or about as I was you know came and asked me to come get on with them and it's a lot of people who've asked me just this year alone a lot of people want some collapse and I was like well I'm really really busy right now as I'm on the road so much but are they've always been so blessed to be able to still be in this game and to be a rock 506-0000 seats you know you got to have some stamina and some. Yes it's way back. Where should I start with the swag all of the stamina What is your swag of this. Kind of watch a little preview to swear you know the stamina I got up and had it all my whole life you know I have the passion for the stage and I've been doing this have the same amount of energy since I was like teenager it's just natural for some time I haven't had suddenly and I'll be back to pass out I knew I should have eaten something but I'm just so eager to get to the stage the sometimes i forget to eat that's not good but. You know at this stage of my life I'm so happy to be able to still perform at capacity and to be on festivals with like people like Bruno and I'm just elated you know d.n.c. And all these guys this is a beautiful day to. Be. Right . Like you and your. Kids and you know you know people love the Nickelodeon girls. My kids like place to. Place the little place what was it like doing a gig slash festival with The Gap Band compared to today what's changed well then it was sex drugs and rock and roll. This Out. I got caught up in the drug thing and I was and I was it for a long time you know I ended up homeless and so I come up and so were 23 years and thank you so much and so I've been on a mission ever since then to get it I'd get back everybody turned me down and some labels and things I start was seeing me perform to do this do to still got some going and that's how I got my deal back and you know I found some people my team Charlie is. Everybody on the same mission. Before like. Scatterbrain all on the same mission so this is the reason why. I have really a good group of people around me now and when you get on to that stage what do you think it is about performing live to a crowd that really energizes you because it evidently does. You do. This is it but. This isn't just. Say I'm sorry Charlie Wilson. Thanks so much happening behind the scenes things the public never gets to see Simon Jones is one of the team for the festival organizers a.t.g. To select the film and I am one of the because of. Paul So what's your criteria for choosing bands and acts Well 1st of all we take a look at it from a macro perspective once we have a headline is in place. And we like to make sure that the whole bill a whole day's complimented accordingly throughout the day so that the people that are coming to see the show 1st of all get to see a broad church of what they're into in terms of the headliner so that it complements their music taste throughout the day generally it's not the same genre across the day but it complements it very nicely so people get to see brand new stuff branding music burgeoning acts and then very very established acts and when we book artists headline artist we book it in conjunction with the artists because it's their show and you know we're almost housing their show and obviously we have a great event name and everyone's used to coming to be a city but this is a Brit Marsha and he wants to have the best possible lineup so all of the acts Bruno's listen to Bruno is heard and he wants to make sure that across all the stages that he is having the best artists on his show for today. And so it's curated in conjunction with the artists and Jim King who who's the event director. You know deals we deal very very much with the artist camp to make sure that they are getting their best lineup that they can possibly walk into on the day and they know that their fans again a great show we found as the years have gone by as a as we've done this event we found that more and more people are coming from further afield because you get lots of people coming into London doing 11 big show and sometimes acting as a European it sluices you know and so people travel for miles and miles and miles I met someone from South Africa that came to see Marco you travel the life of South Africa just to see the show incredible Simon Jones from revealing the negotiating that goes on to create a balanced satisfying day full of musical acts you're listening to the arts backstage from the b.b.c. World Service at the Estee Hyde Park and smoothly run fast. Doubles aren't just about the acts you see on stage the job description for Jenny home our events producer here has a lot of aspects to it it's I specifically focus on events sustainability disability access customer journey and all the non-music content so it kind of goes across a lot of different departments account to break that down 1st of all what's known music content so the artists and then we decide what the ticket types are going to be what the areas are going to look like what the food is going to be what the bars are going to be what they're going to sell and then we also have our midweek content so that's the free 20 bit between the 2 weekends and I program all of that as well and when you say sustainability does that mean no single use plastic bottles allowed and things like that yes we ban plastic straws are events a few years back which is great We've always had biodegradable food packaging so any food trader you go to both public and staff all up acting as biodegradable and cutlery and then this year we're doing a new initiative called the closed loop Cup solution so basically all the cups you see on site we've got the specific bins you'll see dotted around the green so that's great we're cutting out single use plastic as far as we can accessibility needs can range from anything from wheelchair users which is actually quite a small percentage of those with disabilities right through to mental health problems visual impairments hearing difficulties so I make sure that the access at the event is accessible for everyone as possible and that's both prevent So our booking system and our information at the event so you see the viewing platforms the rich sign language interpreter has the lower counters the accessible toilets all of that. Right through to post about making sure all the feedback that comes through is inputted and then things modified and improved for the next year's event as well so it's kind of a year round process and we work with a company called attitude everything in their charity and they consult us and they also score us so with silver lever moment and we are heavily trying to get. The gold standard because we basic want to make sure that our phone is as accessible as possible I run the customer service team on site as well so all the guys you see out there in the pink t. Shirts and it's basically making sure everything's joined up so whenever a customer asked a question to anybody they're getting the same and the correct answer and that is a big job to do on an event of this size so it's a year round job even just coming in from the underground station walking through the park the steward was so fabulous they had a little laminated map they looked at everything they all said the same thing as you suggested I'm very impressed so far how far in advance of the festival do you start planning this and working we've already started working on next year's now so we literally go around the event site and go right what we do better next year let's make sure that's fed through the deep freeze happen as soon as the fest was over and then we go straight into planning and building the project for next year if there's anything we can learn from other events we we for sure do there's a ticketing without barriers coalition that was set up my attitude is everything consultancy and we meet once every few months or promoters or festivals or me in the same room to discuss how we can make our vote more accessible so that is a family than it really is everyone working together so it's asked you know a Live Nation everyone all in a room together working as a team as to how we can make things better joining our murder doing a $1001.00 things as events produce it to make attending festivals a better experience for everyone and we have one more artist to meet in the arts backstage before our time here at b.s.t. Hyde Park is out Alex and is a soul singer with a whole lot of soul think a new generation Etta James meets Amy Winehouse she's a Londoner but her huge success began in Europe is specially in France she supported Bruno Mars on his 1st ever European tour and he's now tapped her up to play the main stage here. Hyde Park I asked her whether it's feels different performing live on a stage outdoors indoors it's harder think that on the outside venues I mean because of the sound and being more open and I'm I'm I'm not I'm one of those performers that hates in is really really explain to our listeners what in is means so in is a like these horrible little things and more that you ears and they cut off the sound around you and give you is like having had like headphones but directly right now is and it was very tricky because you kind of depend on person doing this and a 100 percent and you don't feel not feel the environment 100 percent that kind of cuts your fellow but you're in a bubble so it makes things a little bit harder and I am more of an organic perform I like to feel and and hear stuff bouncing off the wars and stuff is just the way I am. And you have a new album release saying later this year you pulled your heart and soul into it and you say that you have a lot of baggage and that back it includes the def suppose you Father question after him your sister when you were younger so when did you start writing and singing was it it directs reaction to that I feel like I'm fortunate I've had quite a rough journey but I think that's probably what makes a lot of storm do singers you know because I mean you can't really communicate existence without living you know you need to if you can feel reality and it's because it's real and I am not telling other people's stories and I think it was I probably started younger because stuff happened to me that were younger you know in a younger age and then it grew to just get work so gradually it was and and I found refuge in music because it was the only place where I could you know my diary as a little girl you know instead of like putting it down so I'd have a diary in that was my my my lyric book for the whole record not about pain I just want to precise I'm not like a baby doesn't really have a good track because you know life is always you know it's love there's many other things but there's another one love. You toured with one of today's headliners. The mighty 3 name Oz What did you learn from him not to drink whiskey and light a cigarette before the game that was the one as I was Iraq and no I had lie I would like I deserve to be came up to be and he was a so nice everyone said no he's really nice it was to do what you think until I was so scared and he basically he came up to you like a. Nice focus he's like what you got there a counter is x. And right I went apple juice. And I went that's whiskey out of my Yeah and he goes to disarm advice check that out but you sit around and warm up your vocals and he told me you actually do we had to do these really embarrassing hardcore exercises. At ease I do with me on a mark not that there's just pain for every show. He probably does a lot more than he told me but yeah he did any any to me and I because I would just for the nose I'd like a shot of whiskey maybe double from honest and and from Mission and been doing that I don't do that anymore wish I had today with the heat and everything. Just to. Give me a chance to change my love life. That was pretty self thing Alex Hepburn on the back stage of the b.b.c. World Service with me Nicky Beatty ending our visit to British Summer Time Hyde Park in London spread the word about the programme on social media using the hash tag b.b.c.
