News. Hello and welcome to News after the b.b.c. World Service we are coming to you live from London I'm James Menendez and we begin with our top story today the term all that's engulfing as well and ever since a young opposition leader declared himself interim president this week hundreds of thousands of people poured onto the streets of the capital Caracas to support one quiet though he's also received the backing of the u.s. Canada Brazil and a number of other Latin American countries but the elected president Nicolas Maduro seems to be going nowhere on Thursday Venezuela's armed forces declared their support for him we'll have more on the relationship between the government in the military in just a few minutes time but let's bring you up to date with developments over night and in his 1st interview Mr Garrido told the t.v. Network on that he would consider granting amnesty to President Maduro and his acolytes if they stepped aside and. In other transitions similar things have happened happened in Chile in Venezuela 958 we can't discount anything but we have to keep our eyes firmly on the future and we have to be set firmly on attending to this humanitarian crisis for his part President Maduro said he was closing Venezuela's embassy in all consulates in the United States in response to President drums recognition of one why though his interim president he made the comments during a special session of the Supremes court yes he'll regular Saturday full of people much because. I have decided to recall all diplomatic and consular staff for our country and to close all consulates in the United States I think there is no doubt in the world that Donald Trump wants to bring in his own de facto unconstitutional government a coup d'etat in Venezuela against the people and democracy let there be no doubts that Donald Trump in all his madness believes himself to be the world's police the . He believes he's the boss of Latin America and the Caribbean home where go is expected to speak publicly about an hour's time but we'll see likely to say at this stage that the b.b.c. Is give them all more is in Caracas and I spoke to him just before we came on the air. And in Venezuela now has turned unpredictable but it seems that he keeps his lead he is still insisting that he is the legitimate president of Iran as well as his Nicole's mother who has begun us are brother and well he's gathered a lot of support inside the country people who have turned out to the streets to show that millions of them are fed up with. Mismanagement of the economy and he also has gathered a lot of international support we just heard of how he has been his government has said that it would recognize one way though as 'd illegitimate interim president of Venezuela if a free elections are called soon so it seems that one way though is not about to give in the press conference he has called for just one hour and how do we know though what is next step could be I mean what are the options open to him Well that's a very tough question you know the situation the political situation in Syria Robin market here some some politicians and political figures as we are going on the challenge very outspoken openings of the opening goal as Moto has said that there might have been some kind of negotiation be had behind the scenes between the government and and the opposition and the foreign powers trying to push away the presidency by the c.d.a. Sion is really really really empty or nobody can say what's going to come next how nervous are people that you've been talking to you how nervous are they about what might happen next general and history of this country has has made people a little used to political turmoil they've seen in 2017 a huge wave of Broder's that left dozens of people dead in less than 4 months they've seen almost a century in 2004 dan so that they. They are now like. I would say it's a mix of hope and certainty some of them are optimistic some of them feel that there's wide at the end to our political change that might help to build a better future for the country but so more there are rather skeptical or just fear that has joined the center of international crisis and that is why. Bloodshed. There was abuse is good I'm almost peeking to be from Caracas Well let's take a closer look at the military's role in all this speaking at a news conference in Caracas on Thursday evening in full dress uniformly Venezuelan defense minister General of Libya but 3 No Lopez pledge his loyalty to President Maduro and condemned the opposition's move wore off a lot of what you don't know what for a long time a vulgar coup d'etat has been forged against the legitimately constituted government of Venezuela by sectors of the far right brazenly supported by imperial agent this criminal plan which flagrantly threatens the freedom sovereignty and independence of our nation yesterday reached extremely dangerous levels with efforts to open a de facto parallel government devoid of legality and of popular support with the dark purpose of generating chaos and anarchy in our society so what might be going through the minds of the top brass today Professor Brown from Secor is an expert on Venezuela's military He's with the Department of Politics and International Relations at Florida International University and joins me from Miami Welcome to the program 1st of all how close is the military to the moderate government. Well certainly the senior leadership in the military has been purged over decades the last 2 decades you've seen a purging of the military that is essentially favored loyalty of course to the regime and so most of the senior leadership is incredibly indebted and loyal to the material regime him away and said Is it just ideological or is there more to it than that you know I think there it's largely transactional as well much of the military has been part of the pervasive corruption that's taking place at the top ranks of the Venezuelan government including in inclusive of the military they participated in widespread corruption drug trafficking other forms of illicit trafficking and so the military is tied to the regime not just out of loyalty but also out of survival they are now purged and they are now sort of grouped into I think much of the wrongdoing that the Venezuelan government has been giving due credit for the fighting through the drug stright Yes it does. I think there's lots of public evidence out there about senior military's role in either creating an environment a passive passive environment for the illicit trafficking optically drug trafficking and some cases senior military leaders have been indicted and charged certainly from the u.s. Perspective of being a part of the drug trafficking trade presumably many soldiers and their families are suffering because of Venezuela's economic crisis to we have any idea what the rank and file think about the situation no I don't think we have any any real strong evidence supporting sort of their perspective I think the small uprisings that you see are indicative of the increasing pressures on the traditional rank and file within the military and I think this is part of the biggest challenge that the Venice a military leadership face how do they keep a fracturing institution together and what point does the fracturing institution and the survival of the institution outweigh their loyalties to to the president or to President Maduro I mean I've had reports that you know it's in some barracks said to simply isn't enough food yeah that's a that's accurate you know and it's not just sort of it extends beyond the soldiers themselves it extends to their families their immediate their distant families their friends that they grew up with you know the widespread suffering in the socioeconomic context I think has is very visible among most of the rank and file and also keep in mind this the rank and file out in the streets that have to come into face to face confrontation with the extreme poverty and suffering of innocent people on this offer of an amnesty by a long while the opposition leader might that appeal to some senior offices I suspect it does and I think that's you know sort of the design behind it is you know it's important understand that the military is central to anything that it goes forward in Venezuela whether you have a full transition to you know what many in the West or are sort of classifying as the legitimate president. You know one why the. Of Dennis Whalen or maintaining loyalty to to to the you know the regime at the end of the day part of the challenge in making that decision for military leadership rests in sort of that baggage that they carry about you know with regards to being part of the crime and corruption of the Venezuelan government so I suspect that many of course in the senior ranks are thinking about this the challenge remains is that there is a window right if the military if military leaders jump too soon in the but there remains in power in those military leaders that jump to the side of one while will be on the outs and if you jump too late then sort of the surge in the opposition's control of the Government will you know will again kill play its course for those that didn't join the opposition in time Pronk you very much in a Professor Bronfman secretary came to us from Miami where we can talk now to Amanda animists a member of the National Assembly who's from popular will the same party as honk why the welcome to News out just on the subject of the military How disappointed were you that they came out to express their support for President Maduro Well you mean that's presses support of the president you're especially supportive pressing the goto. The high ranks of the military does not they don't represent I'm sorry. The majority of the military in here and they of course are. Involved in corruption. Not to trust the King and. Corrupt my knee in all the Missoni 'd and part of of our country so of course they have to pledge their lower teeth to mature a bit yes. They are their. Allies in wrongdoing I mean ality actions and criminal actions only own one of those move to declare himself and interim president. What are you going to do now well actually that's not true he didn't not declare has said himself this president he's sworn into office is into office as an interim as interim president well yeah that's what it cost to sions this according to articles 233333350 let me read you the Article 33 of occupation sites are we on the for amount amount of time time is quite limited but I just I'm just trying to get an idea what Klunk why though might do now given the Nicolas Maduro has made it clear that he's not budging the military is expressed to support him I just wonder what Mr why those next move might be. Again they have ranks does not represent all of the military and that what it press and can to in this case of why don't they do may mean the 3 things. They deal with finances and international finance international finance and that's where what his team is working not just with international allies who are supporting him. It's more than 30 countries right now and where spectators in a European Union declaration today actually you're not in but he's not in power that's the point of what's he going to do to get power Well 'd it's not a palace it's what you can do what you can actually do for the people so if you tell him that he does not have military power well that right now and because there is no military power actually because it's fracturing so there's no rank and command in India in the files of the military but always but also 'd also means they're dealing with international finance and economic measures and he's working on that and also diplomatic measures we have been recognized at the Organization of American States and we are Beardsley we were working on. 'd destination of diplomatic track to a man I want to have to leave it I'm afraid we're out of time and thank you very much for joining us I was among the Imus a member of the popular will when one of those parties in Venezuela. Still to come on the program the lucrative business of homemade guns in Ghana. This is such a simple watch everything we've got to. Heat up that metal and then that's on. The show and then the one bench where they can actually put together and it's quite amazing how such a simple in. Such sophisticated weapons that can make it. More like coming up in about 20 minutes time headlines from the newsroom this hour the Greek parliament voted to accept North Macedonia as the name of its northern neighbor will have moral not after the news at half past and Roger Stone a former advisor and long standing ally of President Trump's been arrested and charged by the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the Us elections more details on that in just a moment's time. This is James Menendez with news not long from the b.b.c. Not to rush or interfere in the United States 2016 presidential election campaign and if they did they receive any help from American citizens those are the questions the special counsel Robert Muller has been investigating for over a year and a half now and while he still hasn't produced his report on burning issues public statements that mean plenty of criminal indictments as a $33.00 people charged before today many have been Russian but a number of people directly linked to Donald Trump's campaign for the White House have also been indicted including his former campaign chair Paul manifold his former deputy campaign manager Rick Gates and the man he chose his national security advisor Michael Flynn Well today we can add another name to that list lobbyist Roger Stone he was detained by the authorities adorn this morning in Florida and is due to appear in court shortly I'll be finding out more from a man in Washington d.c. And. Roger Stone is a long time u.s. Political operative who goes back all the way to the days of Richard Nixon and he likes to boast about being a master of the political dark art someone who has got his finger tips on insider information and knows the dirty tricks his ties to Donald Trump both as a confidant and kind of an informal adviser they stretch back almost into the 1980 s. He had been involved in previous times Donald Trump considered running for president and did some work for the Trump campaign formally in the early days and although they parted ways because of disagreements he maintained contacts with Donald Trump's campaign and his his advisors throughout the 2016 race tell us about the indictment is pretty long 24 pages I think what does it relate to exactly what do these charges relate to well the thing about this indictment is that up until now Robert Muller had been building this case that it was the Russians behind these hackings of Democratic and Clinton campaign e-mails and that they had used the organization of Wiki Leaks to inject this damaging information into the American political bloodstream at key times in the 20. 16 race to cause of most harm to Hillary Clinton who they wanted to lose and to help Donald Trump what mother hadn't done up until today was proved any kind of link between Wiki Leaks and Donald Trump's presidential campaign and what he's saying in this indictment is that Roger Stone was connected to both that he had information about Wiki Leaks and that both before and after this October release of damaging information Roger Stone was in communications with senior Donald Trump campaign officials keeping them up to date on what was going on and after the information was released to how ranking Donald Trump campaign official texted Roger Stone and said Well done what these indictments are about is that Roger Stone obstructed justice conducted witness tampering and lied to Congress about this involvement to attempt to obfuscate and obstruct the investigation into Russian election meddling that Robert Muller was conducting but throughout this indictment there's evidence of these contacts between Roger Stone and Donald Trump's campaign do we know who that senior campaign official is we don't and that's going to become a big parlor game here in Washington speculating who in the trunk campaign was in communications with Roger Stone and what this could mean for them whether this is just the 1st piece that leads even closer into the very heart of Donald Trump's presidential campaign you know perhaps we will we'll get more clues about that in the times ahead we have any response from Roger Stone to this indictment of Roger Stone was arrested in the early morning in his home in Florida he has not made any comment but his lawyer has come out and he has denied the allegations against him he says that the charges are ridiculous and that this is a minor charge about lying to Congress about something that was apparently found later of course he doesn't address the fact that it seems that Robert Mueller has evidence of these communications with the Trump campaign and. And Roger Stone's ties to Wiki Leaks The B.B.C.'s Anthony Serka speaking to me from Washington d.c. . This week's or a grim statistic from the a burglar epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo 14 new cases were reported close to the country's eastern border the largest one day increase since the outbreak was declared back in August last year most of these latest cases were in the district of Qatar in North Kivu Province a part of the country plagued by insecurity and conflict Well that's raising fears that the disease may spread to a major city Stacy Min's is one of the international aid workers trying to contain the outbreak now she is from the International Rescue Committee and is in Qatar right now so what is the situation currently where 722 cases and 439 deaths the last 4 weeks in particular have been very challenging the security situation has been very dynamic and volatile in the last month we've seeing unrest in protests we've seen attacks on health facilities attacks on it by the response work is the structures that we put in place to to screen and identify about in the cases where which astroid were banned by community members and all of that is taking place on you know an ongoing background of active conflicts and attacks from rebel groups Stacey just tell us a bit more about the attacks on treatment centers Why are those taking place is it because of local suspicion a combination of fact is what we saw in December was that these were directly related to to the election period there was an announcement that the populations in Beni and Tembo would not be allowed to vote in the national election because of the ongoing about outbreak so as a result of that decision and that communication we saw on the rest of the protests in Beni as a result. What about the wider security situation we know that this part of the Democratic Republic of Congo has suffered a lot of violence over recent years how is that stopping health workers containing this virus I mean essentially it's affecting the ability of response workers to move when there are active conflicts or acts of kidnapping by the rebel groups this distrust movement so your response what has be that your surveillance teams are vaccination he means you will say viral teams that just are able to get to where they need to go is it fair to say if that hadn't been the case then this could have been contained by now given how much I guess has been learned since the outbreak in West Africa absolutely I think the the underlying insecurity here has made this outbreak extremely difficult whether or not without the underlying insecurity we would have been at the end of this outbreak is impossible to know but we do have a good example you know early last year over an equitable province and the Aussie there was an outbreak of Ebola within 3 months we managed to contain the outbreak utilizing new tools we have learnt since developed from West Africa such as the vaccine so absolutely I think the underlying insecurity here has has made containment today difficult and will make containment moving forward difficult Yes What more do you need at this stage or do you have everything you need apart from the ability to actually get around and do your job I think there's also a need for more resources in the response because we not only need to spend resources controlling the situation in some way like Benny but we also need to maintain those activities there so as we see the outbreak actually spread further into areas we actually then need more act as an agencies and more resources on the ground to support response and as someone who works in this field and has a lot of experience I mean how are you feeling about it at the moment are you optimistic that things may start to improve or are you worried. This is going to start to spiral out of control I think a mixture I mean it's important also to slog that we have seen some positive developments in this outbreak we have seen some areas where we have controlled the outbreak but Admiral I think the situation here is very worrying I don't think that we've seen the heights of this outbreak yet so I think the things are likely to get worse while last to see a lot more cases before they get back on the road so the ends to fully containing this outbreak is likely to be a long one and that was Stacy mans of the International Rescue Committee speaking to me from North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Coming up on News Hour in the next 30 minutes why having skinny jeans that's jeans with a g. Might be the secret to staying slim also the Greek parliament voted narrowly to approve a new name for its northern neighbor North Macedonia and why hundreds of thousands of fish have died in southern Australia is it the heat wave all that's coming up after the news. B.b.c. News with David Austin the Greek parliament has narrowly voted to accept the new name of its northern neighbor as the Republic of North Macedonia the vote ends of disputes nearly 3 decades old and came despite widespread public opposition because the word Macedonia is viewed in the country is being part of Greek heritage a long serving political advisor close to President Trump is to appear at a court in Florida later following his arrest by f.b.i. Agents Roger Stone was indicted in the request of the motoring Choir which is examining Russian interference in the 2016 u.s. The World Health Organization says Congo's Ebola outbreak is spreading south to areas where there is a greater risk of conflict it said most of the cases reported this year have been in Qatar south of the original center of the outbreak the city of Beni Novak Djokovic is through to the final of the Australian Open tennis tournament how to beating the Frenchman Lukas Pewee in straight sets in the final the world's number one will meet Rafael Nadal the 2nd ranked player b.b.c. News. Welcome back to News and now why can some people eat whatever they want and never perch on any weights while the rest of us struggle to stay in shape while how much we consume is clearly a factor and obesity is on the rise across the world but it seems that some people simply have skinny jeans that's according to a new study by scientists from Cambridge University Sudduth a rookie as Professor of metabolism and meds and there has been explaining to me what they found we studied almost 2000 people who were healthy but thin we looked at their d.n.a. And we compared their genes to 10000 people who were normal weight and other 2000 people who were really heavy and what we found is that people who are thin have specific genes which are protecting them and keeping them thin and also if you look at many of the genes that we already know contribute to weight problems and add them up and make a score that school was really low in thin people so they really lucky they've got a lot of genes that are keeping them thin if you do look at people's lifestyle the same time so we did so particularly to focus on the thin people we excluded people who exercise a lot and weak stupid people with eating disorders or people who had signs of other health conditions really just focusing on people who are biologically probably driven to be thin and that's where we found the strongest genetic effect didn't we know this already I mean I remember learning about sort of ecto more so I think that people are naturally thin and more people have got bigger frames a number of ages ago so we kind of anecdotally know it what we didn't know is the actual hard evidence that the genes are affecting weight and that's what we have here and now of course we're pinpointing specific genes that can affect a person's weight but just to be clear it's not the only reason why people do become obese I mean lifestyle must have an important role to play so lifestyle clearly does have an important role to play but I think people have often assumed it's only lifestyle at least 40 percent of the variation in people's weight is driven by their genes. We've underestimated the effect of genes in biology and I think it's time to be less judgmental but if you've got the wrong genes that doesn't mean you should just give up and go Well you know there's nothing I can do about those people don't tend to do that because of course nobody wants to be overweight and struggle with their weight if you have got the genes or predisposing to you to be overweight actually what we find is when we tell people that and we explain that to them it helps people who often have struggled with their weight because in fact they usually know that there's some must be something going on it's just that people have not accepted that it could be your genes I've been hearing a lot this week about Gene editing and Gene drives Is there anything that we can do with this to try and well space propagate those genes that keep people from n n and stop those genes that are making people fatter I mean is there any way of sort of changing people's makeup in the future at the moment probably not changing the genes but it may be possible and it's likely to be possible that we can figure out what those genes actually do and if we can figure out what they actually do in their cells and in the body then we may be able to target that to develop treatments for people particularly those with severe obesity and that was Professor for Ricky of Cambridge University You're listening to music. This is news hour live from the b.b.c. In London I'm James Menendez. That. Was the sound of members of the Greek parliament cheering after a majority voted to accept the new name for its northern neighbor Macedonia will become the Republic of North Macedonia and being a dispute that goes back nearly 3 decades when it may sound trivial but it is a dispute this prevented the country joining the European Union and NATO because of Greek moves over the years to block membership once talked to the B.B.C.'s Mark Lowen who's in Athens for us Mark how much opposition was there. 146 out of the 300 M.P.'s in parliament voted no James one voted present so that the vote wasn't counted for or against and about on the streets of Greece there has been significant opposition until today from Syntagma Square outside the Greek parliament and I can see just a few 100 protesters now but last night there were a few 1000 here there were there were there was tear gas that was fired to disperse them and last weekend there were tens of thousands who gathered here from right across Greece because Greeks are a nation that if there's 50 attached to it history and they believe that Macedonia is a quintessentially Greek name it was the birthplace of Alexander the Great and it is the name of the northern Greek province so for 28 years Greece has been objecting to its northern neighbor using the name Macedonia Republic of Macedonia and as you say it is blocked that countries e.u. And NATO accession are finally disputes which may seem rather obscure and simply referring to 2 countries in Southeast Europe it actually has taken on wider geopolitical significance because of Russia's involvement in the conflict to try to a resolution has finally been resolved so what happens next is it all done and dusted it will become Republic of North Macedonia and that's it. The country will officially. Tell the United Nations that they are changing their name from. Carney The former Yugoslav Republic Republic of Macedonia to North plus of their India and NATO has a ready said that they look forward to swift Session in for the for the country and the reason why it has taken over new to European Union they have been worried that Russia has been meddling to try to stop Macedonia from joining NATO to try to keep the Balkans in the Russians fear of influence and in return Russian politicians have have criticised the West for blackmailing and bribing Macedonian politicians in their words to join NATO so so really after 28 years there was just intense pressure on Athens to compromise and finally to bring an end to one of Europe's most intractable disputes Mark many thanks for joining us it was a b.b.c. Mark Lowen and apologies for the break ups sharing interview a few problems with that line to Athens but let's turn now to the donors Georgiades vice president of the opposition party in Greece New Democracy welcome to News out how you feeling about the way the vote went. First of all thank you for the invitation I feel terrible as the majority of the Greek people things today you can see from London only what happened in the Parliament but in all the polls. 70 percent of the Greek people is against of this deal and you have to know that and I hope I won't be wrong I will be proven wrong. This will be a very bad day for our relationship with the so-called Not much since day one in what way you see what you were saying before it was as if Greeks were the bad people that wanted to blow firearm of entering into the NATO alliance or not see them be happy or anything else this is not this is totally untrue really that's what's happened over the years the normal. The only state in the region that doesn't has any claim against this country is Greece Boogaard El Baradei and Serbian they want to take a piece from the state only Greece want peace and stability in the region but our main objection from day one and they won is not when they were splitting they won is March before the 2nd World War about the Macedonian issue from 19th century and from the state it started when the communist leader Tito invented this nation after 2nd World War Just because he had the conflict was startling and will garner Ok I took Let's bring it up to 2019 I mean the reality is that there are just so it's just hold on a 2nd the reality is that Macedonia has had to concede in a way and has had to change its name which is a pretty big concession but why isn't that enough for you I will I will extend very easily to you I was my father was born in Florida this is a cd of Macedonia in Greece and since my birthday I know that I mustn't Dhoni and I'm Greek Macedonian with this deal I had like said that I'm not Macedonian anymore and Macedonians are the people of Skokie and this is something I will never accept this is something that will make me and the other people in the cities of northern Greece of Macedonia a real mess and Donia that will feel very unhappy and trying to find a way of having a good relationship with people that feeling very unhappy is a very bad. Very bad way to do it if you will if you yeah if your party were to win a majority in the future government well you on pick this agreement will you scrap it. We have Explain to our voters very clearly that for international law it's totally impossible to stop a deal that has been voted and has been an international deal because since the day the state has taken some obligations and the state does not change just because in that sense of the government but as our president messenger bags said yesterday to the Parliament we will use all the tools we have and we will never let the Greek people feel with no dignity you see since the day the Greek people and the vast majority and this is something you don't seen London they feel without dignity and the majority you saw in the parliament to our point of view it was just a matter of personal deals of some employees that they were elected let's say for example with parties from New Democracy one misspoke or step or from. Mr Cummins party Mrs going to run Mr Cochran Oh you're in the elections where promising to their voters that they were never going to vote something like that yeah and sadly Mr t. Pressed offered them a ministerial chair and they suddenly changed their mind and that's a look that is a little out of you it was just a matter of business of Mr t. Press and has nothing to do with our young people dignity the prime minister but that is the way parliamentary democracy works there are just just briefly having lost the vote in the future would you support North Macedonia becoming a member of NATO and or the European Union. And yes. Since this deal is being voted they will be a member of the NATO alliance because a Greece with this agreement said that it will not block it anymore so. The state the firearm state will be a member of NATO after some weeks Ok thank you very much for joining us we'll have to leave it there out of time there was a donor's Georgiades his vice president of New Democracy yet one of Greece's opposition parties. Now the production of homemade guns is big business in West Africa according to the Pan-African think tank the Institute for Security Studies or I assess these weapons can be bought for as little as $9.00 and they've been used in armed robberies organized crime and conflicts across the continent is thought the blacksmiths in Ghana produce as many as 200000 illegal guns every year from Ghana the b.b.c. Sally Lanza sent this report. Her the sound of men preparing for patrol. These officers from the Ghana police service patrolled the streets day and night. I have come to a night checkpoint quite a nice past popping checking account. Stopping the flow of weapons around the country is a priority. And defense is the commander of the gunmen counterterrorism units you contacted the co have time to check every aspect of the vehicle you can be surprised that they're hoping the end game and side of the vehicle and hide weapons when to stop motorists look out hoping the seats and they were point can be heaving to. 90 percent of armories in Ghana are reported to involve the use of homemade guns it is such an issue that the police have set up a special operation to do with the problem using a combination of patrols quick response time and checkpoints like. This hoping to make a difference. In meaning and gun shows and was the price of these guns slow but the human cost is high and back I saw his notes not only a son to his father was killed when he interrupted an armed robbery on the way home one night I had a gun rerun a 2nd time I had it I get my so he was laying down absent some myself that's not found say around happy and same far I thought Brad was coming. When I look at this picture. I cry a lot he love me ice and daughter he do everything for me he care about it. But why do the guns come from. I went to the voter region to meet the men who make them. In areas of the bush there are many workshops producing Fallon's of illegal guns every year. This is such a simple workshop where everything happens they've got to bellow that heats up the metal and then that's on. The metal is hitting the ship and then this is the work bench where they can actually put together and it's quite amazing how such a simple and basic workshop can such sophisticated weapons like I make it but. We agreed to conceal the identity of this blacksmith so that we can show the production process to make their firearms smaller ones then what is there in to one hand then a 5 round he had Mitzi doesn't know where they will end up for one bite my friends think twice because I don't know how it where you see it if you hear that someone has been killed with a locally manufactured gun what do you think about it I'm not privy happy for that issue makes engage the police in a shootout glose an add on Drew Brees make the news nearly every day and the government recognizes the scale of the problem. June. Runs the small commission we have. The board. This one is too one thing to get. To this day guys a rouse got what he wanted Traficant got to use for drug trafficking and yes that got me. Off got. To vote. On our poll from Guyana by the b.b.c. Suddenly. You're listening to news from the b.b.c. World Service to stay with us in a couple of minutes time we're going to be heading to Australia as another heat wave strikes the southeast of the country. Distribution of the b.b.c. A reminder of a top story today here on News at the u.n. Human rights chief sound of a alarm about the worsening political crisis in Venezuela the country's opposition leader one way though has declared himself interim president but has no control over the armed forces despite that his party colleague out Amanda out of us told us that in the midst of why they are still has the ability to influence events on the ground it's not a palace it's what you can actually do for people so if you're telling me that he does not have military power well that's right but I would also means dealing with international signings and economic measures and he's working on that and also diplomatic missions one of the headline today The Greek parliament voted to accept North Macedonia as the name of its northern neighbor ending a decades long dispute. This is James Bond us with news and let's turn to Australia now another heat wave in the states that include the major connotations of Sydney Melbourne and Adelaide Melbourne in Victoria is expected to record its hottest day in a decade today with temperatures approaching 44 degrees Celsius hundreds of thousands of people are currently without power there is air conditioners cause demand to surge the temperature in Adelaide in South Australia reached 47.7 Celsius on Thursday breaking an 80 year record and I've been speaking to Andrew guessing of risk from tears a consultancy in Sydney that specializes in the response by climate change he's been telling me more about this summer of extremes stroy is experiencing a series of heat waves which really started back in November last year in terms of how they sort of stack up well we're still don't really see the whole summer come together but the thing in a story it was the warmest on record 2008 saying was the 3rd almost either destroy has experience or we are seeing the state waves especially this year being quite extreme end simply in the last day we've seen temperature records being broken at like and it was very warm again across the country today resulting in blackouts and we see some fire conditions now in Victoria and Tasmania with bushfires there business is knowing the cause and obviously impacts on people's health and safety if it's not a stupid question What what's the the reason for this exceptionally hot summer we are saying mean temperatures in a straight increase will likely with climate change so that means that we will see more heat waves in the future with future climate change and the need to really be considering what our climate change policies are in terms of thing out to reduce our carbon emissions and and reduce the risks associated with climate change and what does this mean then for people and businesses farms and so on in this part of Australia which is you know the heart of the economy I guess what that most did. Only natural has it in a strike larger than the sum total of all other natural hazards in a strike you know much bigger than bush fires floods etc The people most at risk the elderly the very young and those with chronic medical conditions in terms of businesses they certainly can lose production absenteeism can also be an issue and simply that they need to close because if lost power or simply it's too hot for their workers to be outdoors 20 percent of fights Halliday's have actually occurred as a result of workers being outside what about agriculture I mean if this pattern continues in and I know it can be erratic but if there are in the next 10 years say more years like this I mean can agriculture survive as it stands at the moment and certainly some cultural impacts to occur during a heat waves you know just a few examples no production goes down because of the heat stress in the in the council we see vegetables affected last year in a stronger drink similar severe conditions we had shortages of several types of vegetables there's a lot of consciousness in their culture communion history about the possible impacts of climate change and you know considerations of about how individual industries may need to adjust their practices more into the future as well 100 getting well Andrew mentioned the drought that's affecting the region and it's something that's likely to get worse officials are blaming this severe water shortage or for the recent deaths of hundreds of thousands of fish in the Darling River but small farmers in conservationists say this ecological catastrophe as they're calling it is because of big business diverting too much water from the river through irrigation from Sydney Phil Musser sent us this report. This is the most Scots thing I've ever seen him on a lot this is a man might just last a look at these animals walking up let me feel are crawling again farmers Rob McBride and Dick Arnold posted an emotional video online after vast numbers of native fish died suddenly at Menindee a 1000 kilometers west of Sydney they blamed mismanagement of the Darling River by the government and the cotton industry politicians and cotton growers manipulators it's the river and nature biting back off just saw along of being absolutely destroyed Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson Young says that too much water has been taken out of the struggling river system where at a situation where big business big cotton their interests have been put a head of the community and a head of the environment and I'll say this this isn't about drought this is about caution about corruption and about climate change. New South Wales Minister for Primary Industries sailed past protesters near the site of the mass fishtail without stopping Nile Blair has received death threats over the disaster but says he appreciates how locals feel there's no doubt the fact that we've had these like for some years ago relations that have been put down the system and into South Australia certainly have dropped the levels here and that's something that I totally understand is frustrating a lot of authorities say several factors conspired to kill fish it Menindee including a long drought and this sudden drop in temperature that caused l.b. To die as it decomposed oxygen was sucked out of the river suffocating the fish in a statement Australia's cotton industry said the water it's taken for irrigation wasn't to blame the recent fish deaths that mean he was a devastating site however it is wrong to blame cotton growers for the sea incident as an industry we are growing the. Very tired of being the whipping boy for all the problems that are being brought on by these crippling drought these events have happened in the past and i will happen again the Federal Minister for Agriculture and water resources David little proud also blames a lack of rain it's just that the drought and we have to be honest about that it's not just fish that affected this effect it west in Quezon West you said Well as we've seen thousands of kangaroos that have died because of the drought which stopped we just haven't had the right it's the heart of the astronomy and push into this landscape time to have this journey it brings people from far and wind the agency responsible for managing water in the Darling and Mari rivers that snake through some of Australia's most important farming areas also denies it's to blame for the Menindee disaster but the mass fish kill again highlights Australia's battle to balance the often competing needs of the environments and agriculture it's massive we've not seen anything like this on any of the rivers in the Mary dolling up to now Professor Richard Kingsford and the director of the Center for ecosystem science in the university New South Wales this is a tension that's not special to a strike many parts of the world are trying to tackle this what I think is interesting in Australia is that we are the driest inhabited continent these issues are very acute and I think one of the few countries in the world that is actually trying to buy back water from the irrigation industry to put back into the river solar power generators are being installed a New South Wales to boost don't suggest levels in vulnerable waterways but they aren't a long term fix to wrench will rain will of course help but more mostly dry conditions a full cost for the months ahead. And that was the p.b.c. Film reporting from Sydney brings us to the end of this edition of these after me and the rest of the team here in London thanks for listening until the next time. With the. World Service Hello I'm James Menendez today President Maduro of Venezuela accuses the us of launching a coup against him I think there is no doubt in the world that Donald Trump wants to bring in his own de facto unconstitutional government a coup d'etat in Venezuela against the people and democracy were lost just how rock solid is the military support for the government also the Greek parliament has just voted to accept nor the Macedonia as the new name Prince nor the neighbor but some say it's a betrayal. And he started he ran and he did get it.
