World Service on that Miles 175 years in prison the sentence handed out to the former u.s. Gymnastics team doctor Larry NASA the sexually abusing his former patients it is my belief to send him to you because you do not deserve to walk out by the prison every time you also today the former Brazilian president Luis de Silva has failed to have his corruption conviction overturned We'll look at what impact another attack on aid workers in Afghanistan will have on humanitarian efforts there and later a raw in the u.k. After allegations of sexual assault at a men only Charity Dinner Well I think it does just show that sexism is still endemic in our society every time you get on to social media news the word feminism you get a whole load of onslaught of people saying all the time it's gone too far I think this shows us that we haven't gone far enough that's all coming up after the news you're listening to the b.b.c. . Ally Marion Marshall with the b.b.c. News the former doctor for the USA Gymnastics Team Laurie Nasser has been sentenced to 175 years in jail for sexually molesting young female athletes judge Rosemary Aqualina said Nassar remained a danger and did not deserve to walk outside a prison again more from Regina vij an arson for the past week the courtrooms heard harrowing testimony survivor after survivor of sexual abuse reliving their ordeal not just in front of a judge but also their attacker Laurie Nasser through the course of this hearing more than 150 women came forward to say they'd been abused by the former Team USA Gymnastics doctor his patients included decorated Olympian including the gold medal winner Simone piles but instead of treating them he abused them the u.s. Citizens are banned from dealing with those on the list Michael Bristow reports these sanctions were above and beyond those imposed by the United Nations included in this list of 2 China based firms which the u.s. Says have done nearly $100000000.00 of trade with North Korea selling metals and computers Washington has long complained that China is not fully enforcing u.n. Sanctions against Pyongyang or those targeted include North Korea's all ministry and 5 shipping companies officials who Luling commune Workers Party in a number of bankers who also identified the new president of Zimbabwe Emerson and ghagra who said that here in short transparent elections by July and would respect the result if the opposition wins he was speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Switzerland David Bamford reports this is the 1st chance for World Business leaders to meet Zimbabwe's new president and his message to them was that he is a stable influence that would start to get Zimbardo. Way back on track ahead of elections to be held by July at the latest while nobody he said was immune from prosecution Robert Mugabe and his wife would be treated with respect Mr Mugabe would continue to enjoy his salary and benefits but there would be 0 tolerance of corruption a court in Brazil has rejected an appeal by the former Brazilian president at a Silver who was convicted last year of corruption and money laundering $2.00 of the 3 judges at the appeals court recommended increasing his original sentence to just over 12 years in jail despite the ruling will be allowed to run for office again in October the main suspect in the 1st criminal trial over the Paris attacks in which $130.00 people were killed as appeared in court in the French capital Jawad bender would is accused of providing shelter to 2 of the attackers while they were on the run in the aftermath of the atrocity 2 years ago Well news from the b.b.c. Dozens of people who hid in a safe room when militants stormed the offices of the charity Save the Children in eastern Afghanistan have been rescued a survivor told the b.b.c. a Gunman tried to enter the room where he and about 40 others were hiding but was unable to get in the Islamic state group said it carried out the attack in the city of Jalalabad the French President Emanuel McCraw has urged world leaders to overcome what he called a crisis in contemporary capitalism he told The World Economic Forum in Switzerland that the leaders who had gathered there every year had forgotten that there was a limit to what people would accept to achieve high growth Let us not be naive to declaw that is the nation in general is going through a major crisis. And this global challenge requires for sure collective fought from international organizations States companies civil society in order to find and implement So if Garner has said the 2 former Guantanamo Bay detainees will remain in the country as refugees carted out doobie and Mahmud Omar bin at if both of Yemeni origin were deported to Ghana 2 years ago following an arrangement with the u.s. But the deal expired earlier this month the original decision to allow them to stay caused huge controversy Elton John has announced that he will stop touring in order to spend more time with his young children speaking in New York the musician said he would say goodbye to fans with a series of concerts spanning 3 years Elton John has sold more than 300000000 records and is one of the world's most in demand life performers a British charity is to close after a reported hostess's at a men only fund raising event by the organization were allegedly sexually harassed the president's club held a black tie dinner at one of London's leading hotels undercover reporters who took host s. Jobs there said many were groped and propositioned b.b.c. News. Thanks You're listening to the newsroom from the b.b.c. World Service with Nick Miles it's a case that's gripped the United States and many around the world as dozens of women lined up to testify about the abuse they suffered at the hands of the former national gymnastics team doctor don't see the frustration big Sasha and the sadness the emotional and physical trauma that haunts my every day and my every move we were alternately strong enough to take you down now when I won but by an army of survivors we are Jane Doe is no more what was done to myself and these other women and little girls and the fact that our sexual violation was enjoyed by a very matters it demands justice and the sentence you imposed today will send a message about how much these precious women and children are worth Sterling right when Caylee Lawrence and Rachel then the Holland who today became the last to address the court in Michigan about Larry NASA the judge Rosemarie i.q. Lena was clearly moved by their testimony she sentenced him to 175 years in prison saying she was signing his death sentence as a Rogers it was my honor and privilege to hear his sister survivor it is my honor I believe to sentence you because you do not have to do anything really to walk out by a prison every minute and. You have done nothing to control those urges can you any remarks destruction or her or our correspondent in New York tough it has been following the case very long sentence and some extremely strong words from the judge. Yeah absolutely the judge at one point bred a letter that he had originally written to her defending himself before he entered into a plea agreement and she then said to him you are guilty aren't you do you want to take back your guilty plea because in the letter he tried to justify the abuse by saying it was medical treatment but the judge said that there was no medical treatment defense and he was forced to go into that guilty plea but that he still didn't fully understand what he had done and she said that if he should never walk outside of prison because he could still be a danger to those who are vulnerable so very withering statement from a judge who really has lent her courtroom over these last 7 extraordinary days to his abusers to be able to confront him and she's called them sister survivors and at the end of each kind of statement from these women she's urged them to kind of leave their pain in the court room several of the women said they tried to report the abuse but they've been ignored and even criticized by the u.s. Gymnastics Association So what's going to happen on that front Well the u.s. Olympic Committee after the sentencing announced that an independent 3rd party would examine how the abuse of this proportion could have gone on detected for so long and of course u.s. Gymnast gold medalists were among those who he abused and one of them Ali Raisman had said that she believed that USA Gymnastics was rotten to the core and she was calling for an independent investigation and all of this of course has really rocked the sport who was supposed to protect these young women in their care so now we have this news that they will in fact launch an independent investigation now you mentioned some of the biggest names in women's sport came forward to say they've been abused does that raise the profile of the issue for the victims in other sports as well do you think. I think absolutely I think this case you saw in the beginning the judge said 80 women would come forward by the end of it you had nearly 160 women come forward among them 7 a limb pick champions of the sport now it was very hard for these women to come forward publicly you know in the midst of world attention and many of them spoke to that fact that forever that they would be linked with what Larry Nasr had done to them but that they gained strength from the other women and decided it was important for other young women athletes to hear what they were saying so that they didn't face the same threats and so I think in light of the whole Me too movement in light of this case there's been a new recognition that there is a space for women to speak up and be taken seriously even amongst sports where there are officials with so much power never Tofik in New York thanks very much. He stepped down 7 years ago but Luis in the Lula da Silva Brazil's former president is still seen as a bit of a champion of the poll by his supporters. So that's why fountains of them came out on to the streets near a courthouse in the southern city of Porto Alegre today Lula does the divide opinion and there's been an equally vocal demonstration against him nearby Both groups were waiting to see if Louis conviction for corruption was going to be overturned our correspondent commit Acosta joins us now from Sao Paulo Camilla understand there's been a develop development in this within the last hour or so. Yes the 2nd judge has voted also in favor of keeping of considering Lula guilty and increasing his sentence to 12 years in one month in prison and prison his previous sentence was of 9 years and 6 months now the 3rd judge is starting to read his vote actually and we're waiting for the final verdict on the case so what will it mean for Lula came here appeal this to a hard courts to. Well there is now obviously a majority in favor of condemning Lula But if the 3rd judge actually votes against condemning him if it's $2.00 to $1.00 as we say would have more avenues so to speak to appeal to a higher court even if all the 3 judges condemn he can he can still take the case to the higher courts and his lawyers say that they will do just that and this is important for Brazil because Lula is not just a former politician is he wants to run in the elections later this year for President exactly and Lula is actually still a very strong political force and Brazil's very fragile ised political very fragile political scenario these days I mean we have to remember that only 15 years ago in this very day the 24th of January Lula was in the same city in Forth Allegri giving one of his 1st speeches as the president of Brazil newly elected I remember I was there remember the electricity the hope for change and many people still hold that kind of hope really for a new government a new look after me Ok afterward so when will be the result of that 1st judge's decision. Camilla Costa in Sao Paulo thanks very much. To Afghanistan now. Another attack by Islamicists a suicide car bomb exploded outside the offices of Save the Children in Jalalabad in the east of the country gunman then stormed the building 3 of the agency staff were killed Monica Santa really the head of the i.c.r.c. In Afghanistan said this latest attack would force organizations that were delivering aid to reassess their operations in the country the security situation there is never being good now of course if there are strings of a complex attack across the country that will highlight may be an increase in security but in fact the humanitarian have been targeted already since a long time so it's not a matter of the last 6 months or 2 weeks and it's something that any other organization has been looking at security as a main concern and restraint chain for delivering humanitarian aid in this country well our correspondent in Kabul succumbed to come on and told us more. This is an attack that lasted really through much of the day here in Afghanistan it began at around 9 am when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the gates of the offices of Save the Children in Jalalabad after that a number of gunman it's not clear yet exactly how many rushed inside the building and began opening fire I was speaking just a short while ago actually with one survivor who told me how he and around 45 other members of staff managed to rush to this secure safe room in the basement of the building and locked themselves in there but he told me that one of the government was really just outside like the other side of the door of this safe room he and the others in that safe from later managed to escape they were rescued through the back exist of a building but he told me the other members of the staff had managed to get into the safe room and were just hiding elsewhere in the building it seems that throughout the day the security forces a commando units had to fight against the militants a number of them were killed during the day but at least one stayed alive and continued firing right into the evening the attack has been claimed by the so-called Islamic State group which is quite strong or has its kind of strongest base really in the province of nanga ha which is in the east of the country in the city of Jalalabad as the provincial capital there so the compounds being fully retaken now but it's likely to have an impact on humanitarian work in Afghanistan a midget. Yes absolutely I think certainly in Afghanistan a number of foreign aid agencies had already over the past few years begun to reassess their operations in light of the deteriorating security situation across the country really last October the International Committee of the Red Cross and out that it was drastically reducing its presence in Afghanistan after 7 members of its stars were killed. In different attacks in Afghanistan Save the Children has said that it's temporarily suspending its operations in the country until it can be sure that it's safe for its staff again there was a conduct commodity in Kabul You're listening to the b.b.c. World Service Marion's here with a headlight a former doctor for the u.s. Gymnastics team Larry Nasser has been jailed for 175 years for sexually assaulting young female gymnasts over several decades judges in Brazil have rejected an appeal by the former president had a silver against his corruption conviction and the u.s. Treasury has announced further economic sanctions to punish North Korea for its nuclear weapons program. Just over 2 years ago 130 people were killed in a series of gun attacks on Paris bars and at the batter clan concert hall today the 1st criminal trial over those attacks began in the French capital burned old is accused of providing shelter to 2 of the attackers as they sought to escape Schofield reports from Paris. Because it issued. This was Joe would bend on the morning of the police raid and send an e. On camera he explains that it was indeed he who let the flak to the tree wanted men but he'd had no idea that they were terrorists he was just doing them a favor he said that he was led away by police more than 2 years on he's now in court in the 1st trial stemming from the Paris attacks Ben Dowd is accused with another man of giving shelter to terrorist. The 3rd man is charged with failing to disclose what he knew to police these were not frontline organizers of the Paris attacks or to dish you is their degree of knowledge about the 2 attackers who they helped build around McConnell who suffered terrible injuries at the start to France on that night explained what he wanted to hear from the defendants. I expect to hear the truth of this trial is taking off the inception phase the logistics who took part didn't I want to hear these people explain themselves and to admit that what they did was a mistake if they say that they made a mistake I won't see them as terrorists I'll see them as idiots who participated along with to oh yes that's different but for now I see them as terrorists lawyers for victims say that Ben Daoud represents that outer layer of support and sympathy without which terrorists would find it much harder to operate they say that with a massive manhunt underway Ben Daoud must have known who the 2 men were to whom he gave shelter he says he was just naive The trial is set to last 3 weeks he Schofield in Paris President Erdogan of Turkey has threatened to extend his country's military operation against American backed Kurdish fighters in neighboring Syria our correspondent Mark Lowen sent this report from in northern Syria close to the front line of the Turkish offensive. At the main police station in the house as the local commander is practicing drill with a few dozen of his heavily armed troops behind them to flank painted on the Playstation Turkish and Syrian the 2 sides working arm in arm. And as near the Turkish border is controlled by the Syrian opposition backed by Turkey troops from here. Reporters are pacing in the offensive against the white p.g. The Syrian Kurdish militia that Turkey says is linked to the outlawed Kurdish militants the p k k as an shabu is a Kurdish commander with the Syrian rebel fighters and I called the last number I am taking part in this offensive not to fire the Kurds but to save them from the tail of the y. B.g. I am not a traitor I am coming to liberate the Kurdish people. Sitting inside an armored personnel carrier with Turkish troops patrolling the frontline just had a couple of coming mortars landing pretty close to here Turkey says his ultimate aim is to push the white b.g. Away from the Turkish border. Near the front line refugee Mahmoud Han tells me God should bless the military offensive the Kurdish militia stole our village killed our young people and displaced us Arabs. Kurdish activists say the Turkish air strikes have killed civilians though that's denied by Turkey the Turkish government has faced international criticism for the offensive particularly from the u.s. Which backs the Syrian Kurds but Turkey's president said his forces will push on until in his words the last terrorist is neutralized Mark Lowen an armed group in Libya says it has arrested a gang accused of kidnapping and torturing Sudanese migrants near the northern town of Sirte videos apparently showing the torture of the captives had caused outrage the newsroom's James Copnall takes up the story the videos doing the rounds in Sudanese Whatsapp groups and on Facebook are horrific young men with very visible scars on their bodies lying on the floor from time to time they are beaten in one particularly disturbing scene what seems to be a burning plastic is poured on to a naked man who rise in agony every time a drop hits him the man a Sudanese from the western region of Darfur they'd almost certainly fled the war and uncertainty of their home region looking for a better life in Libya or Europe. Their kidnappers were torturing them on camera because they wanted to convince their family members to pay ransoms for their release the videos provoked huge anger in Sudan the Sudanese government called in the Libyan ambassador to complain the African Union said ated ordered an investigation into the matter and working quickly social media users tried to trace the kidnappers through middlemen they'd used then a Libyan armed group lol The national unity government announced it had freed the migrants and arrested a gang made up of 5 Libyans and one Palestinian the migrants have been taken to a hospital in the nearby town of Sirte coming just months after footage emerged of a slave market in Libya the case is a reminder of the horrors many Africans face in the country as they try to make their way to Europe that was James Copnall here in the u.k. And investigations been launched into an exclusive men only fundraising event where young women hide as hostesses said to have been groped and propositioned it came to light of to an undercover reporter for The Financial Times newspaper Madison marriage became a hostess for the night. If you want to run an event where women are voluntarily walking and the knowledge that they will be great and fine made that clear in the hiring process but that wasn't made clear and there are plenty of women in there you have absolutely no idea what they're letting themselves in for the co-leader of the Green Party Caroline Lucas wants the Charity Commission to look into the matter well I think it does just show that sexism is still endemic in our society every time we get on to social media news the word feminism you get a whole load of onslaught of people saying oh the feminist have gone too far I think this shows us that we haven't gone far enough and we need an urgent Charity Commission investigation let's talk to our London correspondent Rob Watson Rob tell us more about what went on at this event well to judge by Madison marriages accounts and her accounts of conversations with other hostesses was a pretty unsavory affair that 130 women who were by the way selected on the basis of being tall thin and pretty were told to dress sexy including apparently a black on the job to keep the wealthy guests happy now apparently at 1st behavior wasn't too bad but at the end ranged from unwanted groping to one man feeling the need to get out his penis and the people who are attending this event senior businessmen many politicians there as well a very different parties and a lot has been said in the House of Commons today to about this well it's become intertwined with politics in the sense that such was the outrage that an opposition m.p. Raised the issue in an urgent question in parliaments one female on piece of the women had been used as bait and one of the organizers of the design dinner resigned from his job in a government ministry but I think the reaction has not been political though in this sense and that is that attitudes in Britain have changed so much in recent years that you wouldn't find any politician or political party defending the holding of dinners like last Thursday's even if it did raise nearly $3000000.00 and yet it still was happening in only came to light because of these undercover reporters so. Presumably still is happening in many parts of the country Well absolutely but the president club says that's the last in of They'll be hold holding and we'll await to see an investigation by the Charity Commission but I think it would not because I think too much controversy early to say it's it's pretty clear organizers of charity events are in future going to be more careful to conform with the more how should I put it in social norms of early 20th century Britain Yeah I'm sure the world Rob anything so what's merits here with some of the stories from our news desk Francis has released a message condemning what he called the evil of fake news and its role in creating division for political or economic gain the pope compared the spreading of dissin from Asian to the biblical story of the servants temptation of Eve saying success then its appeal to human greed it was he said a sign of intolerance and lead only to the spread of arrogance and hatred flood alerts have been issued across France with the River Seine in Paris so swollen boats can't get under the bridges water levels in the capital are expected to peak at the weekend a 73 year old woman drowned after falling into the river Bruges to Strasburg it east in Italy the father of a man who died 20 years ago has launched a campaign to locate the person who received his son's transplanted heart Mario Batali has hung banners in his home city of Livorno asking where is your magic beat the departed he said he had always been happy that his son Christian's heart and given life to someone else the search was not to try and make the recipient feel indebted he said but simply to allow him to rest his hand on their chest and feel that magic beat again. Thanks now what do you look for in a Camel where a many features to distinguish a prize animal height shape he is and also a full droopy lip camel beauty contests in Saudi Arabia are big business but scandal has him brought the largest pageant in the Gulf where a dozen camels have been disqualified after Botox was used to enhance their earlier our correspondent Nick Cannon who's been funny out. The camel has many fine qualities beauty you might think isn't one of them but for the Bedouin of the Arabian Peninsula you relied on the camel for centuries the animals not just a beast of burden of remarkable strength and resilience but also a close companion and yes beautiful its charms have been celebrated for years at the King Abdul Aziz festival which features camel races camel auctions tents for tasting camels milk and camel beauty pageants and what makes a camel beautiful why the shape of its hump its muscular physique the delicacy of its ears and its leathery droopy lips the festival was recently moved to a new purpose built heritage village as part of a government initiative to emphasise traditional culture and the prize money on offer is enormous around 40000000 pounds little wonder perhaps that some owners attempted to cheat shortly before the 1st of all of it was caught red handed performing plastic surgery on one camel and the judges got the hump when they discovered some owners were using Botox to enhance their animals parts the beasts were disqualified. News. This is World Business report from the b.b.c. World Service I'm Mike Johnson in the program today a big fine for the u.s. Silicon chip maker Qualcomm for abusing its market dominance from the Commission's point of view it didn't give in talent it's dropping apple if you don't get a shot at Apple you're losing out on a huge market judges in Brazil hold a jail sentence imposed on for President Lula da Silva for corruption and money laundering We'll have the latest this new scandal over sexual harassment in business an undercover reporter tells us what went on at a fund raising event attended by top chief executives I was groped several times by men there I was semi propositions one man asked me whether it was true that there's an after party at midnight till 2 am and asked me whether it was true the after party was wild a response from one of the business world's most senior female bosses and not just for kids the toys proving a big hits with the grown ups to. When you buy a phone or a tablet computer there's a fairly high chance that the chip it contains that's the devices brain was made by a u.s. Company called Qualcomm but has Qualcomm achieved its success fairly The company has been fined $1200000000.00 by the European Commission for allegedly abusing its market dominance e.u. Competition commissioner or great Avesta said Qualcomm paid billions to a key customer Apple to use its chips payments which effectively shot rivals out of the market this case is about Qualcomm having taken measures to avoid competition on the merits the final reflects both the seriousness and the duration of the infringement and is also aimed at tearing market players from engaging in such anticompetitive practices in the future don't go there Qualcomm though said it disagreed with the decision and would appeal it for what is a reporter for The Financial News Group Bloomberg in Brussels and she's been telling me more about what the European Commission believes Qualcomm did roll Qualcomm paid billions of dollars to Apple over 5 years and the European Commission says this is harmful to competition and harmful to consumers because it meant that Apple only bought Qualcomm chips and it didn't buy any others they said that Apple was thinking at a couple of stages of shifting to intel that didn't because it would cost too much money would have to pay back rebates or got already and it would stop her stream of money that it had coming its way what is significant is that the commission says when the agreement was about to come to an end in September 26th seen that was when Apple finally went in Tallinn started looking at introducing Intel chips into its products which are i Phones and i Pads sounds like a bribe is that too strong a word or news of a bribe. It doesn't from the Commission's point of view it's not fair are they right for it fair that it didn't give in talent cropping up or if you don't get a. What Apple you're losing out on a huge market what does this mean for Qualcomm do you think how bad is the news of this fine for Qualcomm it's a big fine but what's more significant is that Qualcomm is fighting for its life in some ways right now are the management are they have a hostile takeover bid on the table from Broadcom and they need to show their shareholders that they're in charge of everything that they know what they're doing this isn't the only case the only problem that Qualcomm has to deal with it's hard fines from China from South Korea a lot of litigation with Apple over the license fees that it charges it's got a case in the us as well with anti trust regulators and presumably if Qualcomm knows that the European authorities are on its case it can no longer offer these kinds of inflated payments so that means that rivals like Intel will be much more competitive now does it in terms of companies like Apple buying their chips well that's already happening and has happened since this deal came to an end the end 2016 and the commission side that says More competition is now in the market how we notice that is a good question x. Our chips getting cheaper that's the key question while chips are only a small proportion of what a phone costs matters a lot to these companies. You haven't noticed Apple phones getting much cheaper No not all right so that's going to make some people curious as to what's happened to this money that's no longer being paid us. Well I suppose more significantly there are very few companies in these markets from announced just point of view it doesn't look great when you only have a few big suppliers out there and if it's impossible to capture a big customer like Apple if you can't get their attention if you can't get a little bit of those sales you never have a chance and Apple of course happily received these billions of dollars no repercussions though for Apple the commission said no while Apple did accept this deal if they didn't have the choices of picking another supplier I suppose it could have bought more expensive chips from Intel but then I guess it wouldn't it would have done that well the commissioner did say that Apple was considering at some point to switching to Intel but it wasn't allowed to that the dealers had agreed with Qualcomm just wouldn't allow it to change that if a white at Bloomberg speaking to me from Brussels share markets in Brazil have risen after judges they're up held a jail sentence imposed on former President Luis in the last year the silver for corruption and money laundering the man known there simply as Lula still harbors ambitions to run again for president later this year joining me with the latest is our South America business correspondent Daniel Gallus in Sao Paolo Daniel before we talk about today's events let's take a step back what's the background to the silvers appeal against this original sentence why was he handed that sentence initially. Well he was sentenced to 9 years of it and a half of jail because of corruption at state oil company Petrobras it's a large graft scandal we've done many stories here in World Business Report basically politicians getting money from construction companies that were offered contracts to pet her brows little himself was accused was sentenced for ricin for allegedly. Getting a gift from one of the company's beachside apartment which he claims was never his so that was the original sentence and this is what the judge has kept today that decision they kept today yes or 3 judges white that appeal what have they been saying Yes Well there are 3 judges to rule 2 of them have given their sentence and the final judge is now giving his and the score today's very important because all because of timing 2 of the judges said that Little did actually take part in this corruption corruption scheme but markets and everyone else want to know whether the 3rd judge will agree because a unanimous decision was sort of end Lula's legal run in this matter and it is likely that he can go to jail sooner rather than later and also more crucially he won't then be able to run for president of Brazil because if too if he didn't get a unanimous decision he'd be able to file a longer appeal and that would maybe not be in time for the elections so all he's trying to do is actually not be jailed and run for president again and he is leading all pools Ok why of the markets then although he's very popular individual an iconic figure you could say what why the markets warhead about the prospect of him possibly returning as president. Well Lula has been saying that this is all part of a big conspiracy to to put the Workers' Party in jail to put him in jail and to end a government that helps poor people at the expense of Brazil's elite So what he promises to do is actually to revoke many of the economic reforms that were done in the past year by the pro-business government of President Michel Thurman and come in with a different angle with more spending with what his rival say are populist measures on the market see him as a populist who'd spent too much money and would therefore make resumes economy collapse once more Daniel thanks very much indeed our South America business reporter Daniel Gallus there how much progress has the world of business made when it comes to achieving equality between men and women not very much judging by reports of widespread sexual harassment at a charity fundraising dinner attended by senior figures in business and finance last week at the Dorchester Hotel here in London by something called The President's Club this was a man only black tie affair offering auction price including lunch with British foreign secretary Boris Johnson an afternoon tea with Bank of England governor Mark Carney But according to undercover reporters for The Financial Times who were there her steps is employed for the event were gropes and propositioned for sex the pipe story had an immediate impact charities have said they'll be refusing donations advertising giant double pay which paid for a table on the night said that it was severing all links with what has been an annual event for the past 33 years and the Bank of England has withdrawn or its offer of tea with Governor Carney he says he was deeply dismayed such an event could take place Madison marriages one of the Financial Times reporters who went undercover as a hostess for the evening she's been telling me what happened to her I was hired as a high stress to a. The President's Club holds an annual charity dinner at the just a hotel and I arrived to start my shift at 4 pm and I laughed at about 3 in the morning and when you were there tell us a bit more about the sort of things that you saw I suppose that for you came as a real shock partly came as a shock is a part of the reason we wanted to investigate this event is that we had heard from former hostesses who've worked at it in the past and bearing in mind it's been running for the 33 years so there's a long ass of women invited the previous day that the female hostesses weren't treated very well on the night so it's a male only event with about $360.00 and of high profile business men in attendance and $130.00 odd women hired to wait on them as hostesses we knew that there might be bad behavior on the night but we didn't know that it definitely would happen I was that a to witness it firsthand so what happened to you personally I was groped several times I was kind of semi propositions for man asked me whether it was true that the officer is an after party at midnight till 2 am and he asked me whether it was true the after party was wild that all the houses were up for it before to me that he had a room up stairs one of those dresses on the same table as me was asked whether she was a prostitute she wasn't another woman said the man had shown her his penis during the course of the dinner and another woman was crabs and told to down a champagne rep of phonecalls and dance on a table although you went into this event thinking something may go on how just recall your feelings as this was happening to an extent you were prepared for it but how we feeling in the moment shocked and alarms didn't really sink in until like I got back to the hotel room that we had rented on the road that was used as our going to base camp our headquarters for the day. And got back a 330 and I was so overwhelmed with. Shock and dismay do you feel this sort of thing may may go on elsewhere in different places in a different time and I think there's there's definitely an issue with sexual harassment in the business world almost every industry so in that sense it's not unusual what is unusual about this about is how secretive it is and how high profile the guests are it's literally a room of the most influential people from every sector imaginable from auctioneering to the arts to academia to finance to politics shipping you name an industry and there were some in that room he's either a c.e.o. Or chairman or a director and it's kind of is the institutionalized level of this kind of treatment of women which was so shocking I suppose some people may say look we're just taking this all a bit too seriously we're being a bit too poker faced about it what would you say to those people that griping and other forms of sexual harassment are an assault they're not appropriate you wouldn't hurt a waitress or 2 and our hostess it's not acceptable in this environment or any other environments I suppose whether the people present the Stinnett behave badly or not do you feel that events like this which parade women on the stage as they did these hostesses including you as well you were paraded on the stage for all these men to see before these things took place should that sort of thing happen at all. There's a reason for questions answered I don't have a problem with the last act or. Yeah I think female entertainers and dancers and such like that it is totally fine it would be nice if there was a mix if you got a mixed audience perhaps you could have mixed and detainers they don't need to be women in skimpy outfits and you're a financial journalist the rest of the time if I could put it like that does it make you wonder just how seriously to take all the things that big corporations say these days about the need for gender equality and how much they're doing about it yes I think the companies that were there sponsoring tables that have his actives who are repeat attendees at this kind of event I think they'll be a lot of questions today from their senior female star and a lot of those companies seem to be stepping back from this event dissociating themselves with the advertising giant w p p a sponsor the table now says we won't be doing that in future the Bank of England has withdrawn one of the prizes afternoon tea with Governor Mark Carney what do you make of the response that's. Happened so far. Quite predictable and how are you feeling now. Quite tired of announced but the brilliant thing has been the hugely positive feedback in response to the story that we've had obviously there are a few people who don't like the story and that's their view but overwhelmingly on social media and you know my email inbox has been a a really kind and understanding response and I think people are kind of fed up I think other people are shocked that this kind of thing is still happening in $28.00 in financial charge reporter Madison marriage the President's Club has now declared that it will not be hosting any future fundraising events and will close as fresh reports of sexual harassment in the corporate world of forcibly making waves at the World Economic Forum in study devil where in between the skiing in the schnapps businesses have been finding time to promote what they're doing to improve gender equality at work we lost a few people that's devil us if they believe real progress had been made. Under the crew and deputy prime minister in Belgium from a human perspective it is a mistake not to give boys and girls the same opportunities with even from an economic perspective it is a big mistake why would you only invest in half of the population knowing that any country that gives women more opportunities actually have more wealth creation give more opportunities and if you continue at the current pace it will take us more than 200 years to solve that my name is best Porter So I'm a woman c.e.o. The people that I'm found in the company with have select me very much for my skills and my background and not because I'm a woman and putting me in that position because they get some gain out of it they could just as easily have hired somebody or selected somebody who is another man but in fact I bring expertise that is unique and they thought that I would do a good job but it's not always the case and there are people who get selected for these jobs because they're trying to make a point Michael Roth I'm the chairman and c.e.o. Of i.p.g. The Interpublic Group when I joined. I.p.g. It was basically comprised of white males it was clear to me that we had to change the organization now we have 52 percent over a senior managers are female and actually I'm on the next phase of this now in terms of total inclusion and a concentration on people of color in our industry I am free to Polly I'm the c.e.o. And co-founder of a company called metrics but I do think that events or lounges like the girl's mom versus where we're sitting here helped to wards that goal of gender equality however I do believe that the overall participation of the audience here at Davos is still fairly heavily skewed towards a non diverse group so I think the short answer would be not enough progress another firm which has flown executives to press the flesh at Davos is the u.s. Consumer products giant Procter and Gamble it makes brands including aerial detergent and Crest toothpaste the companies group president for North America Karen and test it is also responsible for gender equality she spoke to me on the line from Davos and I still teach by asking for her view of what went on the President's Club Denah I think it's a terrible thing and I think this is all of the reasons that we need to get more and more voices more businesses more organizations standing up for gender equality and we have to call out this behavior as completely unacceptable because Procter and Gamble your company is one of the biggest companies in the world how big a challenge in 20 E.'s gender equality for you still about 45 percent little bit more than that of our managers are women we have 50 percent of our entry level managers that are women and then at the executive level of our company it's about a 3rd that are women why so few. The progress that we make will only be made with intentional and very dedicated effort which is exactly what we're doing you know as women we hear these conversations all the time and I'm sure you've heard them as well women doubt their abilities women need to be a little bit more aggressive women need to control their emotions the underlying subtext of that is you know the workplace is fine we just need to fix the women and from our perspective so clearly the women aren't broken the women don't need fixing but we have a definition of leadership is really based on male behavior in your company what exactly is it that stopping more women getting to the very highest levels because clearly some of the easy is it your inability to recognize that talent or are you saying it's their fault for not thinking enough of themselves and it's neither of those and there are so many things within the system that we have to address so as you think about progressing from entry level and getting into executive management there are life stages that get in the way as women have babies as women leave the workforce to go and start a family what we have to do is systemically make it easier for them to come back how do we work very intentionally on that we have to talk about paternity leave we have to talk about parenting leave in total it could take 217 years to close the gender gap at our current rate of progress our focus is is not on finding fault because I don't think that's constructive our focus has to be on the solutions so how long do you think it will be before that one 3rd becomes 50 percent before the proportion of senior managers a new organization is evenly split between men and women so much to ask is that how long will it take. Yes Somewhere in there. Probably somewhere in there that's quite a long time I think it's better than $270.00 How difficult have you found it you're the senior position with one of the biggest companies in the world has that been a struggle for you to achieve that group president for North America the biggest challenge that we have is to deliver results we have to be working and Vironment where we can bring our full selves to work I've got 2 daughters and so my husband and I both worked we both took a great part in our kids' upbringing but I couldn't have done it without my husband do you think having a family set your career back then absolutely not Ok so you think you were unusual in that given that you've said that it can be a bit of an issue when it comes to improving the ratio of senior men to senior women in large organizations and I think what you have to recognise is that some of that is just individual life choices so we just need to understand the overall situation but nothing is only one cause right we have to make the system better that's Procter and Gamble's group president for North America Carolyn tast at Wilson divorce is the u.s. Treasury secretary Steve he's been saying a few things about the u.s. Dollar and his comments have been getting quite a lot of attention in the financial markets as I've been hearing from Chris Beecham at markets he said that they're very happy to see a weaker u.s. Dollar that is good for the u.s. Economy now the dollar's been declining for over a year now a long term decline of it has been given a sort of green light if you like by these comments because obviously the weaker dollar makes u.s. Exports more competitive around the world helps boost the u.s. Economy so that's why you've seen further declines stay the market rethinking that the u.s. Won't do anything to arrest this decline of just let it continue Ok I mean while the pound the u.k. Currency investors responding to the latest news on British employment Yes More good news for you came plume and you seen once again hit record high but the issue here is that wage growth isn't keeping pace now way to grew by 2.5 percent year on year. In the month of December that's good it was better than expected but when you've got inflation running at 3 point one percent you can see that prices are rising faster than wages and you've got what's called a squeeze on income so people are actually worse off than they were despite the fact they've seen their wages go up and this is a major issue not just in the u.k. But around the globe you saw the pound strengthen the back of this good news that of course is tied to that weak a dollar story as well you see the power levels is no had since before the BRICs vote so it's very interesting dynamic at the moment the you've got this good news you can call me even of course with Rex a negotiation is the Round 2 is still yet to start Chris Beecham London's main 100 share index fell 1 point one percent to $7643.00 in New York the Dow is currently up a 10th of a percent at $26241.00 currencies in New York the euro's at one dollar 24 point one pounds at $1.42. Now kids are big business in some countries the market for so-called Kidulthood toys often bought by adults for adults is growing 3 times faster than toys overall it's a big theme of the annual Toy Fair now under way here in London our reporter Liz withhold some has been channeling her inner child. I'm at the Linton toy fact it's the biggest event of its kind in the u.k. With thousands of retailers money factories and bias in fact the only thing missing is the children and in a way that's pretty appropriate because nowadays adults are increasingly likely to be buying toys for themselves. My next Meghan Clements I'm a toy demonstrates that I wish with the laser x. Game the cat comes with 2 of the face x. And justice and every time you get a shot make this and. We're not twenty's and we've had lots of fun with it today celebrating its 25th anniversary this year is our ranges although you might to satiate it with children I don't suspending hundreds of dollars on priced pieces from the range. I'm David Holmes on port manager at the. Power Rangers and go to Golden Palace often my husband which is the more. We go to. We get a lot of off just as power ages so you get adults coming dressed to as the favorite pair range or yeah that's why I like to boast which includes things like figurines also doing a roaring trade Eva Doris is head of marketing figure of the Middle East and Africa at Sun Kay which makes products based on function approach here we start with our songs range she's buying these 9 centimeter tall figurines if you'll die hard fans that love us b.v. And there are now well into the adult hood and they're still loving Star Wars and they've got the new fans what do you think will be paid for 2018 Harry Potter is going to continue to really well put also doing little in the style chicken quintessentially British licenses just at the moment we're launching the royal family he's got a lot of. People that love the royals in North America that's a sin I don't scrapping fun is about getting back to basics made its case found at San Francisco based University Games traditional games are doing really well because there's still this token back to your childhood so new versions of Scrabble or out new versions of monopoly are out safely again called fishing for words which is a dice game what's that based on. Word games all are based on Scrabble which was the 1st word game in the most popular but right now the marketplace the trend is for new word games so what happens is when you play this game instead of Scrabble where you have to do all hope board in the game takes about an hour this game takes less than 10 minutes you roll the dice each time he has letters on it and then you try to form a word so I'm going to form a word here with the letters that I have I'm going to form a question and it moves very quickly each person only makes 7 words in this game words in Scrabble you're making more than 4 dozen words what would you think you play these games. Night time any time you can do it in the during the day you can do it at night some people put on swimming costumes and play these games it's anytime anywhere with anyone. Spoke move co-founder of University Games speaking to Elizabeth Holtzman some news just in before we go on that appeal by a form of Brazilian President Lula to Silver against his jail sentence for corruption all 3 judges involved in hearing the appeal is now voted to uphold that conviction is being seen as a major blow to his ambition to run for president again later this year that's all from a finale Thanks for listening you're listening to the b.b.c. World news on.
