And welcome back to coast to coast Paul David's with us again we'll get your calls blowing America's mind that he wrote with John Selby and both of them were in the m.k. Ultra program really didn't even know what it was at the time Paul what do you think the CIA wanted to do with the results what do you think their plan was. Well let me take a step back and say that in 1052 when this got under way I'm not sure that they knew what they they wanted they were reaching out in many many different directions to test they had a list of 139 drugs they wanted to test they put deep noses Rajapakse ours wasn't the only one into effect and as it developed over time when Richard Helms was appointed the head of the CIA the 1960. 466. In any event he brought he brought in for the m.k. Ultra program a long time CIA employee Dr Sidney Gottlieb. Who'd been a chemist and he put Gottlieb in charge of all of these projects and this got completely out of control. In all there were a 149 projects that we know about that were. Using human subjects many without any knowledge or consent. There were 86 different institutions involved in these included universities like Princeton University and Columbia University we have articles in the book taken from the time period one saying when the CIA told 1st told Colombian Princeton of the secret behavioral research that it was going on in the universities told the administrators that from New York Times. So the public was never supposed to know about any of this and Richard Helms ordered Sidney Gottlieb to destroy everything and a lot of the m.k. Ultra records were destroyed but we don't know why but they were 120 boxes of information about m.k. Ultra that survived at Langley at the CIA. Mislabeled as having to be the having to do with the financial records of some other kind of project and somebody stumbled across it after Helms was gone what have they ever been part of document disclosure or anything like that well it all burst forward in the mid 1970 s. I think it started in 1975 but most of this hit in 1977 which was like 10 years after John Selby and I got through the program and then it was all the newspapers in the country this was the headline story everywhere you know we we were inspired to use our title of our book blowing America's mind it comes from an l.a. Times editorial. At that time in 177 when it was all hitting the fan where there editorial was called the CIA blowing America's mind and it said you know that the nation confronts the question of how to prevent its secret intelligence agencies from destroying the very freedoms that they were intended to protect and this was a destruction of the freedoms that they were intended to protect Why did it end all or did it well Gottlieb said in interviews before he died that he felt that it all came to nothing that Paul their efforts that you know they never created the perfect assassin. That they never found the perfect amnesia drug Helms came into the agency hell bent on resurrecting mind control projects that had already been set aside he resurrected them he put them under Gottlieb and. Then Helms got into a lot of trouble himself you know he had to testify before Congress lying lying to Congress he was charged with trying to remember that you know I mean he he was given that terrible punishment of something like 1500 dollar fine yeah you know but really honestly when you look at the descriptions of the m.k. Ultra projects that we have this is not the stuff this really is for example some project number 68 Dr Cameron McGill University doing what he was called Psychic driving on patients some patients that came in for not really serious psychological problems you know maybe depression and the things that they were put through I just want to read some of it partial sensory isolation. Depriving or inducing continuous sleep with drugs for $7.00 to $10.00 days at the end of the program see sensory deprivation using cure artery which is a poison on these people to mobilize them. And use of loud sound on them for long periods of time using loose and agendas like l.s.d. There's this information about someone who was given l.s.d. For like 150 consecutive days they were using it as a weapon this this drug that people such as Timothy Leary and Terence McKenna and many others all this Oxley who chose to pass away under l.s.d. At a time period what an era Yes. It was a drug that was related chemically to the flesh of the gods the sacraments of the Mexicans and yet they were using it in absolutely perverse ways and mixing it with hypnosis for human control and inducing bad trips and suffering and it's it's hard finding when you look at what this went through then there was the Church Committee investigating all of this this was I think around 1987 or a year or so after and Ted Kennedy was part of that committee by that time Stansfield Turner was the head of the CIA I think that was under Jimmy Carter who was a new administration and they whitewashed everything I mean for one thing they claimed oh we're going to find the subjects we're going to recompense that and we'll find out whether they're Ok they did nothing Were you mad what they did to you Well I had mixed feelings I mean I asked to be part of it but you didn't expect that I didn't I think that. There was extreme manipulation of John Selby which I saw where one of the doctors at the institute. He may have been bisexual and he was certainly partially homosexual and had an attraction to the boys who were working in the program and there and you'll see this in the book the very deliberate efforts to use hypnosis to cause John Selby to break up with a girl that he was very much in love with them I thought you could not use hypnosis to change someone's real mind well you know if you couldn't make a guy for example if you never wanted to kill someone you couldn't hypnotize him to kill someone you know what we're talking about being in love with somebody where there's always ambivalence isn't there you know you're talking with somebody it's never been married it's his 1st serious relationship but here's some interesting things I need to add in that I hadn't said John Selby grew up on a cattle ranch he was really a fish out of water at Princeton we were 2 completely different personalities it was like the Midnight Cowboy How do you even end up at Princeton Well the story by itself yeah he had been a foreign exchange student in South Africa and had really interesting experiences there and he was very smart and he was very athletic and he rose to being one of the top fencers you know the top fence around the Princeton fencing team he was for a while number 4 in the country in fencing and this hypnosis the flashbacks. I don't want to give away you'll see in the book what happened to him as a fence or and I get out of this very interesting study so you know I'm more angry for what happened to John Selby because I got out of it before I think any you know lasting damage and you just walk. I quit and I talked to them I was having real depression at that time and because of all the stuff you were doing Yeah and and they suggested private psychotherapy for me with one of the doctors from the Institute again keeping the control you know the control actually kept it in how I had one session with him and he was into sort of a touchy feely touch therapy kind of thing you know I talked about the homosexual tendencies so I had that one session and that was the end of it I was it for you know and I'm not going to say I never went back because I went back to the institute 20 years later and what I discovered was that the Bureau of research was shut down and boarded up boy it was it eerie they still do it they changed the name it was now the New Jersey developmental center you would never know from that that it was a psychiatric institute with full time psychiatric patients I mean they had psychotics there who were there you know for the long haul. But they shut down the research and I went to the building I went up I went up the stairs I was able to get in and then looked around everything's covered with dust and cobwebs and you know I had real patterns and I was taking some pictures and then one of the guards catches up with me and. I explained I used to work there you know I get tried to do a song and dance but he kicked me off the premises. As far as my overall feeling you know I was it of vulnerable young naive stage of my life I think I learned something from the relaxation of hypnosis would you do it again Paul No I wouldn't and I look with great interest on how hypnosis is now used in the u.f.o. Field you know my great interest and you follow Joey and your great documentaries to thank you and then the film I did for Showtime with comic Laughlin Martin Sheen right as well it's you know it's a classic I think most of your listeners are probably saying it. And yet it is a fact that hypnosis is used to recover memories. And. Does it work can it work well we know it can because we know of the case of Betty and Barney Hill we know in that case the 1st nationally known abduction case they underwent a sure did Dr Benjamin Simon Yes he wrote a book about it I interviewed him when I was a 21 year a reporter in Detroit y'all I think it's called The Interrupted Journey and what was written by John for oh he wrote the book about Dr Simons where That's right so Dr Simon. You know I I I don't know what his final conclusion was but I think well let me tell you what it was because he told me and I asked him specifically tell me he was from Boston psychiatry's in Boston and I said the Dr Simon did this really happen to Barney and Betty Hill were are they lying to you what did they say under hypnosis and he said George what ever happened to them and I do not know what happened to them but whatever happened to them they believe it to be true and their stories matched so it's right so the stories they are telling me that I took separately about the strange encounters with these beans they both believe that that's exactly what happened to them so he said to answer your question bluntly they're not lying that's right I don't know what they're saying I don't die I don't get this well but they're not lying when I was a segment producer for f. Lee Bailey on his television show Lie Detector we had that he was a guest and she passed the lie detector test there. And I believe that and I do believe hypnosis was very very useful in that case I think that the danger is. Confabulation or being led by the hypnotist in the direction the hypnotist wants to take it so I'm not convinced that everybody who feels they have recovered memories of an alien abduction you know we're really had that experience being but. Some do I mean sometimes it's accompanied with so much emotion Whitley Strieber I know very very well and. You know I believe his stories of what happened when I did and when he's a guest by the way next Friday good going to talk about his new work that he claims he wrote with his. Dead Wife and yes yes you know anyone sorry he was part of a film I made called The Life After Death project and you interviewed me about that yes remember that and that's that's still out there but you know something a couple of other things I want to get into well yeah and then we're going to take calls when we come back after the break Ok a couple things that you know Timothy Leary was so prominent in proselytizing l.s.d. He was a professor from Harvard Yes shots fired it was fired and then he set up the league for Spiritual Discovery up at Millbrook New York in a state that he was sort of gifted by Peggy Hitchcock's from the Mellon family Nixon called him the most dangerous man in America Yes yes amidst a just man alive and I made the by the 1st full length feature documentary of Timothy Leary's life with him the year before he died did you like him. Did I like him he's he's fascinating he's brilliant he has so much he's contributed so much but you know he was an irascible grumpy angry old ex-con by the time I got well they destroyed him to live by years in prison he said it was productive he wrote most of his books in prison. He's one of the most prolific psychologists who's ever lived in America I have a bibliography that just lists all the things he wrote with the power graph on each $1300.00 page bibliography it's just a list of everything he's written it's incredible he went to prison for just having a joint of Marijuana Dinny Yes Well that was the 1st conviction out of Texas and then there was a subsequent conviction that he claimed it was framed in California and pointed different times that I don't want to get to that issue of how marijuana has been used in suppression and back then I'd love for your listeners to get a picture of just how direct Kone and it was on 1st of all we came out of the Puritan era in this country we used to have the Hayes commission that censored everything and television the films and you couldn't have married couples shown sleep in the same bed together so there was the prohibition on sex but the prohibition on marijuana if you were caught I mean when I was at Princeton there were a couple of undergrads who were arrested for having some joints in their dormitory and they were thrown out of school never to be sold by God Yeah it was the evil of evils to Jersey I think it was I think they were being prosecuted to be sent to jail for 10 years for a joint and I said one of the books that I really love is the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test that's the story of author Ken Keyes e he didn't write that book Tom Wolfe wrote that book but Ken Keyes he wrote One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and sometimes a great notion to really extraordinary works when he was in his mid twenty's and the law caught him. With a couple of joints and he had a lifetime of harassment and legal problems times of change is now we've got 29 legalize marijuana states yes and how many others have just simply legalized it but what's really interesting about about the Kent keys the story is he's the one that bought an old 130 school bus painted up with hippie dayglo designs and went around the country with a 1000000 tabs of well they weren't tabs he put the acid into Kool-Aid and they would distribute it to whatever city they want now this was one l.s.d. Was still legal he did this in $64.00 and l.s.d. Was legal until 166 put it in the Kool-Aid Yeah I mean he served it to people in cities they would have had but they didn't know what they were getting. Well he would tell them it's the acid test oh he would Ok everybody you know you're going to take the acid test and so he turned on so many people and the acid he was giving them came from a man named. Owsley Stanley you remember Owsley I do not Ok Owsley was apart from Sandoz in Switzerland he was the biggest manufacturer of l.s.d. At that time and Owsley was the founder of The Grateful Dead Ah Ok And what do we get from the Grateful Dead we got acid rock and we sure did We're coming back Paul for more when we roll along here on coast to coast am Plus we will take phone calls next one of the perks of being a coast insider is that you can participate in our twice monthly live chat sessions or read the transcripts later George Norry chance with the insiders on the 2nd Tuesday of the month and a special guest who's featured later in the month click the coast insider link on coast to coast am dot com to get started. fairgrounds commercial buildings be advised this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see 40 to 80 percent on a hot tub in swim spa this weekend only Friday through Sunday silver dollar fairgrounds commercial building 18 month interest free financing our factories have demanded we sell 1000 hot tubs and. Welcome back with Paul Davids and one of the authors of blowin America's mind let's go to the calls you've been waiting for a long time Thomas and La Jolla California go ahead Tom you are just thank you for taking my call returned and all I wanted to ask you Paul about what the prob Ishaan. Made Sika tropics you know legal after 966 but before 966 they were street legal and there were many communities that were consuming psychotropics for creativity in the 1940 s. And 1950 s. Articulate what then the Hollywood entertainment. Industry and also within the science fiction community yes within the 1940 s. And 1950 s. . Robert Silverberg science fiction writer has written a monograph about the use of psychedelics by the science fiction writers in the forty's and fifty's such as Robert a Heinlein Theodore Sturgeon. Andre Norton who was actually that was a pen name for Alice Murray Norton Philip k. Dick explicitly wrote about psychedelic experiences in the light fifty's and early sixty's and his works and then you had the artistic community such as Mary pinko Meyer are down but how do a little later you know also a strange wife to CIA agent Couric Meyer and she was passing out Alice Stacy Sandaza pharmaceutical grade Alice state a politician said I just interrupt and say that Timothy Leary said and he says it in my film didn't the Leary's dead that she gave j.f.k. L.s.d. In the White House absolutely and that would have been of course the sixty's I don't know about the 1040 s. So much because Albert Hofmann discovered. L.s.d. He discovered its properties in 1950 in 4242 but you mention the Hollywood community Cary Grant I think yesterday was the anniversary his death Cary Grant underwent l.s.d. Psychotherapy when it was legal and used in treatment and it was one of the 1st. National. Well the publicity caused national awareness about l.s.d. And that it had value in psychotherapy it wasn't until the boom came down that it became so black and and l.s.d. Research other psychedelic research was. Stopped people couldn't get grants. They couldn't get the drugs of research quality and it's been that way for for many many decades and I think that that prohibition that level of prohibition is ending out I think where we're reading about things that the f.d.a. Is experimenting with certainly with. Is it called m.d.a. The. One of the drugs that they feel might be helpful for post-traumatic stress disorder and you read about other research that's reemerging now and you also read that l.s.d. Is making a comeback among the young This is one of the reasons why I feel that our book long America's mind is relevant now again you know it's about what happened in 1907 at a neuro psychiatric research institute and yet all the things that we experienced sort of come back to the fore now that we're in an era where someone like Steve Jobs has said that l.s.d. Was a great help to him in making breakthroughs that led to some of his advances in technology I believe Steve was next at the same thing and these are being used more in micro doses I understand in Silicon Valley. So and then of course we have the widespread legalization of marijuana now as a great social experiment. I remember during the Just Say No era under Ronald and Nancy Reagan that things were so strict freedom of speech was so limited about these things that even the comedy Cheech and Chong movies which we all know were doper movies that was about they were comedies about smoking marijuana they took the references to marijuana out of the Cheech and Chong movies and made it that they were importing dime in this rather than marijuana and that's how crazy it was. But I just want to say I think you make a really really good point about the fact that those drugs found a very constructive use among creative people before. Before all of that the terror stories were were spread around let's go to Chris in Oklahoma now Paul Chris welcome to the show go ahead. Thanks for taking my call Sure thing Chris you can answer my original question earlier about. If you thought it was the whole experiment on human subjects so I was going to ask you Have you researched eery. Last year recently Charles Manson and his commune was funded and pretty much manufactured. I haven't heard that one have you Paul No no I don't but we all know that in terms of sociological history that the murders perpetrated by Manson and his followers kind of marked the end of the of the love fest of the psychedelic revolution that's that's when it all began to really turn dark. It was a it was a it was a dividing line because there was a lot of celebration you know there were the b. Ends and the festivals of love in San Francisco and all the concerts and the Fillmore all room and the Avalon all those things that were happening back then and of course Woodstock. And then you had some prominent overdoses that were here image not psychedelic drugs but between Janice Joplin Joplin and Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison and you have. You know you had the dark side get all the publicity and and. You know then everything changed but again I think with with blowing America's mind that one of the great values of it is that. You get to feel those times as we live them and people are what their toe into the psychedelic pond again and looking for that looking for what we were looking for out of it let's go next to Buffalo New York 1st time Caller Hi Bob go ahead. Yeah hi can you hear me yeah thank you George and call Frank you are an excellent show. That we're looking forward to buying a book. Called from the heart of the Hudson Valley so I'm sure you were about 20 minutes from now I want to make a comment and ask a question I have experimented with l.s.d. In mid seventies through after researching it and reading about it in different periodicals and then. It led me to discover the substance another. List in other substances like we grow seeds and morning glory seeds and it definitely didn't give me enlightenment and and. Opened up what they call yours there and I you know. Definitely may be more creative but I know so the question also Paul is why do you think. Still you could obtain with those seeds and one of our seas gleefully but l.s.d. Is of course a legal I don't to do the eat of course we heard about morning glory seeds back then. And. I don't know what do you have to take a pound of them in order to get a 2nd don't know what Woodrow seeds you have to peel the coating off because it's supposedly contained strychnine and you crush them in the morning test or the blender or whatever and it's about a tablespoon dose to swallow with water and it is psychoactive I have had trips on it. A little bit different analysis. But isn't it a lot different. It's more or want to ball it's not as much as you don't get digitals as you do with Alice you know the tram and you don't get. You don't get the collar you don't get you know there are a lot of other psychoactive plants and I think back with a smile on my face to the singer none of and then the 1960 s. Who sang a song electrical banana it's going to be the very next phase the very next craze I don't know if any of you remember that song but they were talking about running electric current through a banana peel you know eat the inside of the skin it would be like a marijuana I've never tried it I don't know whether it worked but you know there are a lot of different things people lick toads that have psychedelic properties of a skin I think it's all you know it's I guess people will experiment with anything but I think it's a shame that the pure psychedelics that are best known whether it's l.s.d. Or mescaline are still so I've been are not legally available as marijuana is becoming available I mean the word psychedelic means it's scary to a lot of people it is scary. It is and. And the results are unknown you know but you know I have a friend who took one puff of pot once and couldn't handle it you know and he was out of it for a week from one puff of pot and other people can take 500 micrograms of l.s.d. And and and and function so it's a very individual thing I think like with any drug and I don't think blind self experimentation is a good thing but why can't there be centers Why can't there be trained guides Why can't there be. Screening tests to personality tests and to understand who might be able to benefit from these things I mean we know that alcoholics can benefit from from them we know that hospice patients can go out with more peace from this so the research needs to come back we need a whole new set of standards and rules were groping with that right now with marijuana it's a huge social experiment going on right now we don't know how it's going to sort down we don't know what the end result is going to be but we do have a major major schism or conflict in this country over the fact that marijuana has becoming legal in half the states and it's still against federal law and what does this do to respect for the law for all laws for all laws you know you think back to prohibition one of that due to respect for the law and they had to give up prohibition it doesn't work so. I'm glad we could have this evening and talk about all this now because this is all a lot of it's been forbidden subject for just too long you know and I'm older now I'm less afraid of it I'm less afraid of going public with it and that's why we published blowing America's mind now did it take a while to come forward to do this you've been thinking about it for a long time obviously a long time you know we started writing it and soon after it happened and I think you know the last 15 or 20 years John Selby and I have been enjoying our careers I've made one movie after another you know I wrote Star Wars books for George Lucas on your well respected poll Thank you know we're there we go you're there people love you thank you I really appreciate it now I'm putting on these magic shows you know I'm a member of the Magic Castle I did you didn't see it but in Laughlin Oh what a hit my magic shows were I love I love the enjoyment people get out of that and so you know but in order to have the courage to come forward and say look I'm going to talk openly about these drugs now and admit that I was part of this dark program when I was in college took me a long time to come to the point of saying I want to put that out in the open and now it is out in the open Anybody can read the book at John Selby 2 by the way a highly respected author I think I think he's written about 40 books psychology self-help philosophy adventure stories terrific writer you know but after all this happened he went his own way I went my way we never collaborated on anything through the years until I picked up the phone to him in January this year and I said John Selby. I love that book that we never finished I love the characters pock pock is I mean he's like a character out of Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To me I mean he said Philip it's a work of literature we must finish it and we did and I'm proud of it let's take another caller to Derek in Texas go ahead Derek already got Yeah I'm a. Very big friend of yours so well thank you as well thank you. But the main thing I wanted to say is brother. Got cancer 30 years he used to pickle what I asked him he used to say he told me that when I was a kid he told me that he saw Jim Morrison by talking to him I mean I don't know if. You want to speak on that or not but. I really really thought you saw Jim were doing. Well that was his experience and he told you that's what he felt but I mean you thought you were George Harrison Yeah I was told I was. For one session I know but as far as communication with people who have passed both George both you and I are experts on that you've written your book and I've done the life after death project and also the book an atheist in heaven and I we had that wonderful caller who talked about the science fiction community one of my best films is called the scythe 5 boys about the history of science fiction and special effects and movies I love that community I love forest Jackman and I became convinced that he was still interacting with me after he died and I offered. Evidence of it through things that happened that scientists studied in that book so can that happen I believe it can happen I don't know if it really happened to your brother but it's a great thought. It's a shame Jim Marston died so young that they all did well that's true the name of the book boy in America is mine by Paul David's and John Selby it's amazing about the CIA's m.k.
