And by contributions to your pbs station from viewers look you. Thank you. Please welcome our guest back to the program. President of the nations leading latino civil rights organization. He and Community Leaders just released their assessment of the Trump Administration first 100 days. And they say it is dismal. Good to have you back on the program. Thank you, a pleasure. Well talk about what we have seen in the country and around the world, on may day, protesters having their say about immigrant rights. Let me read the way mr. Trump saw or sees, saw at this late hour, this day. President trump proclaimed monday to be loyalty day. He wanted to call it not may day. Loyalty day. Time for americans to reaffirm their commitment and i quote to individual liberties, to limited government, and to the inherent dignity of every human being. With pledge of allegiance ceremonies and display of american flags thats what he called for. May day for again protesters around the world, meant something very different today. It is about really having the dignity of every immigrant respected in this country and around the world. As you know, this is an issue not just here, but in other countries particularly in europe. Here in the United States, biggest challenge we have had with the new president and his announced rhetoric. Around immigrant rights and around immigrant, immigration enforcement. Were you sur priprised to se violence some protesters were met with . We are at a polarizing time when it comes to, use. Some folks see immigrants as a scapegoat. Folks like donald trump really tapped into the base perhaps inspire that reaction. And there are of course folks who recognize our common humanity and recognize, the rights of immigrants, migrants. Refugees, to be treated with dignity and respect. Thats what our constitution is about. Thats what our history in this country is about. Want to get more into your report in a second. Dismal report, not the report dismal. The report where you are calling his actions dismal. Before i get into that. Seems to me, you, disagree with the notion. However bad it has been it could be worse. Which is to stay he has been pushed back by a number of courts on muslim ban, pushed by courts on sanctuary cities, that issue, he has been pushed back by the court system on a number of fronts that i would think, suggest to you, and others, that it could have been worse. Well, absolutely. I think 100 days could have been much worse. What we have seen, a series of court defeats for the Trump Administration not just, on the muslim ban, recently on sanctuary cities. We have also seen congressional defeelats defeats. Border wall defunded and first budget voted on this week. What woo have see have seen is was expected. What we have seen a dismal failure by any ones likes with respect to this issue. What have you seen that has disappointed you . What we have seen, a campaign to terrorize families of immigrants. Children, United States citizens. Many of them, with a great fear of what might happen. And thats been created by the rhetoric of executive orders including leaked executive orders never issued. By statements. Jeff sessions, john kelly, donald trump himself. That, that regularly demean, immigrants that regularly, are designed to make people afraid of what might happen. Coupled with that. You have got no Central Control, so, ice agents, cvp, Border Patrol agents across the country are being told do what you will. We are not going how to have send tr Central Control that existed in the obama administration. Shocking. Cretary of homeland security, he was a military general. Cant imagine a military general running a military operation with no Central Command and control. Thats what we have got going on. Rhetoric designed to care. And no Central Controls. You got ahead of me which is fine. Let me follow you then. When, you reference this, the budget. And how essentially this, this big idea for the wall, that he counted off like a campaign. Essentially defunded. How did you read that . I think a strong indication. Conservative republicans are not going to stand for that kind of colossal waste of money. I think they know it is not necessary. They know that it is going to stand as a monument to the failure of this administration. If it is ever built. And they dont want to see the money wasted in the way that, trump would look to see it. Uhhuh. Of what of ice, raised them a moment ago. The fact this is enforced here and there at will. How do you push back on that presiden . Set some limits when Central Administration isnt setting limits. We are going to have to depend on the court system. To set some of the limits. Telling them you cant do enforcement, sensitive location for example. You cant hang outside courthouses and think that is legitimate immigration enforce. Tactic. You cant target those, who engage in free speech for arrest when theyre engaging in that free speech. You cant decide that you are going to engage in a street raid without any basis for doing so. We will have to see, courtrts sp in. Set limits. Because so far, the Central Administration, isnt setting any of the limits. Since weep ju just discussed. The muslim ban. Sanctuary cities. Defunded the wall. This budget, budget hearings. This round of budget hearings. So only thing left in my mind is, is the language. It is the fear. The fear mongoring. He is trying to intimidate people. Is that working . Well i think when you have the president of the United States engaged in rhetorical warfare against a group of folks who feel because of the election, a little concerns about their future in the country. It doesnt have an impact. We have to push back. Creating counternarrative says you have rights as an immigrant, undocumented or not. You have the right to exercise those rights. Without having to waive them. We are going to see that, ice agents are going to try to get folks we have seen to waive their rights. When you exercise the right, you are going to be supported by the community. With resources, legal representation and the kind of support that is critical to standing up to authority asking you to waive your right. What do you hold or expect that these protest around the country and around the world to day will mean. For this fight. Hope it means there are leaders in the house and senate that will interpret strong indication they should step up and place some limits on the rhetorical warfare waged by the administration. Hopefully kid taking proactive steps to address the need for Immigration Reform. Flaws in the system that left us with so many, millions, contributing every day to our economy and without legal protections. Over the past few years. At the center of this, so much talk. Some of it legitimate. Is that term old school, any hope that we are going to see, meaningful Immigration Reform any time soon in the country . My hope is we might have incremental movement on some of the necessary reforms. For the moment i would say anything that would address the majority of the flaws in our immigration system doesnt have a chance with this president to move forward. What do you see movement on . Movement to protect. Deferred action for childhood arrivals. Those received under the Obama Initiative protections. The president , President Trump said on a number of occasions he is not targeting that group. They should not be concerned. If that is the case, maybe a chance to move forward protecting that cohort. Not nearly enough. There needs to be substantial Movement Getting to a pin the that leaders of both parties understand the necessity of reforming broadly our immigration system. Firstly to protect those raising families and contributing to the economy and so sigh teciety. And second, to address the flaws that created the issue to begin with. Starts with removing discriminatory National Origin quotas and the like. You have a president like donald trump in the oval office. Keeps leaders like yourself. On your heels. Which is to stay it keeps you on the defensive, which leads me to ask, do you get a chance to be on the offense . If so, how do you, how uh do yo push an agenda not just what you are against but what you are for if this guy is keeping you on your heels by rhetoric . When it is rhetoric. Makes it easier to talk what should be substitute fing for t, rhetorical warfare, positive steps to be taken. On top of that. The Latino Community has a role in not just pushing back on the policies of the Trump Administration. But proactively trying to, seek out and eliminate conditions that made it possible for some one to be elected president after announcing their campaign. With a slander against the entire mexican immigrant community. I think there are ways to do that. Starts with increasing civic engagement. More naturalization. Working towards voter registration. More voter participation. Stins with a sense across the country importance of the Latino Community. Immigrant community. And incorporating the perspective of the communities in every element of life from corporate leadership to media to governance. Any community that, that is smart, knows the value of having people on both side of the aisle. Donald trump did get in with some support from the Latino Community. I dont know who your go to people are on the inside. Just asking, whether or not now that he is in, there are latin e oz in the inside. You can work to tone town the rhetoric, change the agenda or not possible to have that conversation with this guy . As you know, there has not been a lot of progress in filling a lot of positions the president is permitted to fill. So a lot is unknown about who is going to be where. After announcing a cabinet that included not a single latino. With drauf his lab nominee, led to alex acosta nominated and affirmed last week. And, alex acosta, while republican, conservative, some one in the latino commune knity can work with. Whether he will have the access to the white house necessary to have influence there is an open question. The bigger question, who is going to fill all empty positions. Right now, i would have to say we dont have a lot going on inside ally know what comes from inside through the rhetoric, executive orders and the like. We have got to counter that. Put forward as you said, an alternative agenda. Prthe final question, is the a political agenda that needs to be waged between now and the midterm elections . I think the agenda is to ensure that leaders in republican party, house, senate. Understand it is in their own best interest to put limits on the rhetoric. Put limits on the announced policies of the administration, with respect to immigration. Otherwise they will face a kons dwens that i think will overwhelm them. Leadership will have to decide to to step up. Differentiate themselves and move forward on alternative agenda rather than towing the line with this negative rhetoric and policy pronouncements from the president. All this week. Taking a look at the Trump Administration. I think tomorrow night, tuesday, issue of gun control. A major speech at nra upset a lot of people. Talk about that issue. And ted koppel is here, great journalist. Talk about the role of the media. How this relationship between trump and the media existed, the first 100 days. And then, economy and all star panel. Guests this week. Look back at the first 100 days of the administration to the night we discuss immigration with our friend tom. Good to have you here. Like wise. Next, remember Academy Award winning director, our friend, jonathan demme. Stay with us. Last week the world lost one of its most prolific filmmakers with the death of jonathan demme, probably best known for rachel getting married. Philadelphia, and silence of the lambs for which of course he within, a best director oscar. Over the past few days many have penned obituaries and tributes attesting to his artistic genius, most importantly to his humanity. A humanist. I believe at his purest when making projects, driven by love, passion, and connection, to the heart our others. Here a clip from his first appearance on the program. Back in 2007. Discussing his documentary right to return, about the residents of new orleans fighting obstacles to rebuild their lives and their communities. Great to be with you in new orleans. And let me start by asking, where you got the idea. To do this project. Spend the time you spent in this, in this city, in this, part of the city. Through the many months. All of us who lived outside of new orleans were heartbroken by what we saw. In the floods that followed. And i talked to my friend from new orleans. New years day. 2807. And cyril was describing something i didnt know about. Something that the media wasnt telling. How, there were people down in new orleans, hardest neighborhood. In the ninth ward. All over town. That were literallyighting to have the right to return to their homes. And the more, the more cyril talked about it. We need to bear witness to this. If you are a filmmaker. Have a camera. Have a little camera. Need to get down there and find some of the people. Record the struggle. When we start airing this series, five nights this coming monday. Whats different about the treatment you have given this documentary. One could argue not nearly enough. How the treatment is different on this particular project. This, this piece. We call it new home movies from the lower ninth ward. Sort of what they are. Wept down the first two seasons. Joined later. We visited homes. Like the house here. Welcomed them into the homes. Welcomed the opportunity to share their experiences with us. I think as far as i know, we are the only record thus far. Of, of they literally to me. Heroic struggle of trying to, keep your home. Rebuild your neighborhood. When you say heroic struggle. Tell me what you mean by that. We use it in a glib sort of whey. When you say hero. In this area. Against all the odds. Coming back to the lower ninth ward. What do you mean by hero . It is really interesting. I think probably coming down. We didnt know what it was going to be like. Probably a sense that we were going to record, the the victims of a tragedy. Victims. Aftermath of a tragedy. What we discovered were these extraordinary, person after person after person. Wherever we went. People who dare dare to come back to this one. And people of new orleans said were not helping you. The state of louisiana made promises they didnt keep. Certainly the federal government. Did nothing to help. Yet they came back. And in a pioneer way. All businesses in the ninth ward. Lower ninth ward. Every single one. No drugstores. Farm sees. No gas stations. There was nothing. Fight for the right to get home. In those days there was a very real threat that, that, the powers that be wanted to kind of bulldoze all of the homes away. And rebuild new orleans as a boutique city. His first love was music. Movies came second. So, it comes as no surprise, then one of his final projects was a multimedia. Rock n roll hall of fame. Premiere july first. Final feature. And back in 2012. Discussed his eclectic music taste and work with neil young. One can come to the conclusion you are a lover of music. That your music taste is eclectic. On one hand you have done neil young, bob marley stuff, have you done, are you, you really do love music that much . Very, very much. Early days of television. I know. Thinking of this lately. My two flashes of me as a little boy. One, standing in front of the radio. Freaking out. And singing lady of spain, nat king cole. Stuff out of the radio. And guy williams, singing wild horses out of the radio. It was magic. That introduction. Im not the only one. Meanwhile, going in the other room. Tiny little tv screen. Here is king kong, and Yankee Doodle dandy coming over. Maybe i was a lenly kid. Spend too much time on the radio. In front of the tv. I was in ok rated with that. As a filmmaker. Now that i get the opportunity to, to, to film. Neil young. Great music with cinematic approach. Its heaven for me. I love it. Country western version of neil young. Heart of gold. A valentine to nashville. Country music. Grand ole opry tradition. Hank williams. That was a beautiful. Handcrafted. Elegant piece we did for film. This, this piece is he was on tour with the show. And you know here it is. His electric guitar. Filling up with this extra ordinary sound. When i saw the show. Got to film this. Nothing like it before. Probably what makes beautiful. Viewers got a chance to see some of that a moment ago. Tell me about the treatment that you gave to the subject in this piece. Interesting, because the two previous films we did. Heart of gold. Neil young trunk show. And, a lot of other musicians. At one point. 23 players on the stage. Part of what is magic. The way he interacts with the other musicians. And we capitalize ton that, heart of gold. With a smaller band we capitalized on this tremendous kinship, and interplay. In neil young trunk show. Here we go on this tour. Him alone. Noe, we have lost one of our corner stones. Which is this intimate, interplay. Now what we have gained is we can just, give our undivided focus. Dedicate a camera to his guitar. Every moment of the concert. Dont depend on tying him in with any one else. Our goal was to make the film become. A cinematic expregs of the stories he is telling, the songs he is singing. I think one of the intimate pieces. You know, thats been done yet. In addition to his many appearances on the program. I have been honored to work with him on projects, such as right to return. And, new orleans. Been in the storm too long. Last december. We visited the Standing Rock nation. To document the protesting of the access pipeline. Our last collaboration. We had stuff to record on the way over. We got to Standing Rock this afternoon. And we, we, brought a load of firewood down into the veterans village. And and, has we were driving out. We saw that they were starting to form up the lines. Forming a chain. Holding hands. Beautiful. Prayer moment. Continued in the car, heading to another part of the camp. More and more segments of line coming together as we pass. While that was going on. Certain point. You heard some one shouting. They just spread the news that the, the army corps of engineers denied the permits. And we are trying to wait for more information before, before freaking out. The veterans showing up like this has really stuck it to themmen a wthem en in a way they cant ignore any more. [ indiscernible ] been here since august 4. 50 people here. To stand here today and hear, the army corps denied it, it really, really made me so many miscommunications. And so, until, like it really happens. Really, really excited. Just that edge. And they, it seems, seems really real. And really, really excite the about it. And oh. Jonathan demme survived by his wife, joanna howard, brooklyn, ramona, and josh. Jd you, are missed, brother.
