U. S. Secretary of state john kerry called the elections nonelections, a great big zero, noting opposition contenders were are not able to participate and many people in areas held by rebels does not vote. Robert ford criticized the United States this week in an interview. What was the biggest mistake you think the Obama Administration made . We consistently have been behind the curve. Events on the ground are moving more rapidly than our policy has been adapting. And at the same time, russia and iran have been driving this by increasing and steadily increasing especially the iranians their support to the syrian regime. For more, we are joined by skype, bureau chief for the Washington Post who covered the syrian elections from there. So behind the curve, the former ambassador made this charge. A fair criticism . Yes, i think thats a very fair criticism. I think weve seen since the beginning of this crisis in syria, weve seen the americans way behind the curve at every step of the proceedings. We saw them wait a very long time to ask him to step down, but then said they would help the rebels but very little help arrived. And the extremists were getting a lot of arms and money and got stronger at a time when the americans were still really holding back on helping. And now assad has excererteded control over the country about that. And iran considered this election a victory, a defeat over western influence. Its really hard not to interpret it that way. Iran has certainly been trumpeting this election as a victory. Top military officials called it a defeat for america. And its all very well for the americans to call the elections meaningless as john kerry has done, but really when you see how they have capitalized on the pictures that youve seen on the division of all the adoring crowds turning up to krovote fo him, the mere fact that he could hold an election across the country in almost every town does tell you hes the power to be reckoned with. So lets talk about the aids situation. In your report, you said the u. S. Title now could be up to 2 billion in humanitarian and other aid to syria. What is the u. S. Hoping to accomplish with this . Well, its been part of the u. S. Policy all along, they have been so reluctant to get involved with helping the rebels. But at the same time, they know this is a huge and horrible humanitarian crisis. So they have been very careful to get out in front of that crisis on the humanitarian level. The Obama Administration would ref prefer to see this as a hugh p humanitarian and not a political issue. So theyre very much involved in pushing more money than any other single country into the humanitarian effort. Most of that is channeled through the u. N. And we know that 90 of what the u. N. Provides to syria in aid does go to regimeheld areas. So basically theyre just propping up the u. N. Effort which is a good effort, but its not actually making a difference to anything. It is helping on the ground, but not helping all that much and not helping people who dont live in regimeheld areas. And what about the Ripple Effect of the refugee crisis . There are probably a Million People in lebanon where you are. Yes, this is an enduring and intractable part of what is going on in syria right now. You can sort of see how assad believes he will settle the problem in damascus by crushing the rebels wherever he can and asserting his political power with iranian help, with russias help. Bu but you have these 2 billion refugees, growing every day. Very destabilize. And that problem has to be solved before the Syrian Crisis can be solved. All right. Thanks so much. Thank you. This week marks the 70th anniversary of dday, allied invision of normandy. And we bring you the stories of two American Service men who fought that day. Of normandy. And we bring you the stories of two American Service men who fought that day. And things did not go as planned. He shared his experiences with or colleagues. Susan murphy reports. We sat in our steel bucket seats and the takeoff time was 10 41. Tom has vivid memories of that night 70 years ago when he flew across the english channel. I cant recall exactly how long the flight was. Maybe 57 minutes, maybe 59 minutes. Only 22, he was among the oldest of the 58 paratroopers on board the military transport plane. The once avid runner says he had no time in the flight to worry. He was busy assisting his jump master with equipment. I moved up to the front, made sure that everybody was alert and awake and cigarettes were out. Their mission dubbed Operation Overlord was to parachute between enemy lines. They were to secure bridges, roads and canals just hours before a massive sea and land invasion of 5,000 ships and nearly 140,000 american and allied troops. For rice, the mission was the culmination of a year and a half of intensive training. There was 45 aircraft in a v shape. I was in the third one to the right. From the planes open back door, he watched enemy fire streaking up from the ground as they approached their jump location. We were pitching trying to get away from the flack. Heavy fog and enemy fire caused pilots to panic and break up the formation. But still the red light above the back door of the plane came on. That means we have five minutes to go. So we got lieutenant got us all standing in the order there, stand up and hook up. Rice was always the first jumper out of the plane. So when the green light came on, he jumped and got snagged. My arm pit got caught in the lower left hand corner of the door. He swung himself out with a load of gear on his back that outweighed him. I normally weighed 137 pounds. That night, i weighed 276. He says he twisted, freed himself, opened his chute and plunged in pitch darkness toward heavily armed germans miles from his intended drop soezone. He made a hard landing. Only 15 of us got together for the first five or six days. Rice spent 37 days fighting in normandy and equipped with just three days of food. He says he lost many friends and saw things hes never forgotten. No, that stays. His living room mantle is filled with memorabilia and awards including a bronze star and purple heart. These are two medals that the french gave me. He hasnt always openly shared his war stories. After retiring from the military, he got married, had five children, and was a history teacher in chula vista for 44 years. But his students were never aware their teacher was a walking history lesson. They figured i was in the military, but i never told them a word about i was in the airborne. Now at 92, rice uses every opportunity to share his accounts of dday and world war ii. He knows his aging generation of dday veterans is fading. I developed a lot of camaradercomrad camaraderie with those guys. Rice plans to commemorate the 70th anniversariry likeannivers out of an airplane. Rice was among the First American troops to set foot in norm normandy. The day continues to shape his life. And from wttw in chicago, dday veteran Charles Thomas recalls those first moments approaching the beach. I didnt take time enough to pray. Charles thomas was only 20 years old and thousands of miles away from his home in chicago when he took part in the most audacious military invasion in world history. It was rough. I wouldnt say exciting. Trying to stay alive was the main job i had myself. Clarls thharles thomas was a of the division which on june 6 was among the first allied forces to land in normandy. Only a year before, thomas was a recent High School Grad living in chicago and he enlisted in the summer of 1943 and less than a year later, he was making a historic 100 mile crossing of the english channel. We were 12 miles out from the beach when they let us go. A long ride in the rough water. Two hours sleep probably. Sea sick. We all got sea sick. We had bags to throw up in. Paper bags to throw over the side. But you hit the beach, or get near it, you get off the boat, you forget everything. Youre not sea sick or nothing. Just trying to take care of yourself. You see the tracers coming back tracing the water. There was a Museum Dedicated to them on the sprawling estate once owned by colonel robert mccormick. Among the displays is a vivid exhibit recreating omaha beach. Visitors here can get some idea of what the troops saw as they stormed the beaches of normandy on dday. As you leave a landing craft, you land on omaha beach, you count counter the ob ob kells. This detickepicts the single important day. The plan didnt work out as well as the planners had hoped and the soldiers took the fight into their own hachppene hachbd hand the victory. Thomas suffered a concussion later in the war, his only injury. Among his possessions, he still has the wallet he carried on dday which held a photo of the girl back home. He didnt meet his wife until later. Thom satisfias is now 90 years. While many might see his service as his greatest achievement, he prefers to tout another accomplishment. I raised a family of five, married 63 years to my wife. All in a lifes work for a dday hero. And finally tonight, one world war ii veterans Successful Mission to nor norman day. Bernard headed to the ceremony commemorating the ceremony in france. He wasnt expecting his trip to cause such a stir but it didnt arrive me. He arrived back at portsmouth this morning, his last minute dash to normandy a success. How is to be back . Marvelous. Absolutely marvelous. This is a smashing country. What was it like being over there . There was just time to pose for the photos before he was driven back. He was worried hed be in trouble. But this is what was waiting for him. Hed always been popular here and they certainly let him know it. And so it was less trying to explain what had happened. I think he just thought off im going so he took himself. Why didnt he tell you . I dont know. Thats snag may coomething that out in the wash. But once they set their mind to something, they dont let anything get in their weay. Bernard jordan was determined to be there 70 years on. He will be 90 this time next year. And says hell do it all again. Watch a british soldier who took part in the allied assault on dday recreate the parachute jump he made 70 years ago. Returning to iraq, at least 60 people were killed today in baghdad when multiple car bombs tore through the city. Up to a dozen blasts. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.
