Welcome. The dows record run is over. The blue chip index fell today on rising tensions with north korea. There were reports today that u. S. Intelligence analysts assess that north korea has produced a miniaturized nuclear warhead. Though it is not believed the capability has been tested, but in response, the president said north korea better not make any more threats against the united. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. He has been very threatening beyond a normal state and as i said, they will be met with fire, fury and frankly, power th the likes of which this world has never seen before. And that sent the sock market lower today. The dow snapping its string of record closes falling to 22,085. John harwood is following the story from washington. What prompted the president to issue his Statement Today . Tyler, after the United Statesed nations voted sanctions unanimously over the weekend including support from china and russia, this was a victory for then saw the north korean leaders say that there would be physical reactions from the north koreans. Didnt really specify it beyond this general statement, but it sounded like a threat. We know that President Trump does not like to be threaten et. He is a personality that favors dominance, so he responded sharply. We know some of the documents about developments about north korea, but advancing a nuclear threat. Theyre getting closer, faster than most american analysts had expected. First, youve got to show the nuclear weapon, then have a missile cableabcape bable of delivering and then youve got to make it small enough to fit on the missile. It appears t cle to that step and we saw the recent test of anint Intercontinental Ballistic Missile and suggested they have the capacity to reach the u. S. Mainland now. We have to leaf it there. John investors are also watching earnings. Tonight, we heard from dizmy. The dow reported a drop in component and revenue, but its shifting its strategy. It plans to take bigger stake in bam tech and is launching its own streaming service. Th earned a 1. 50 a share. Shares fell in initial after hours trading. Zwl this play it is the groundwork for the company to do a number of things. Provides uz with option att it and y we havent had b to do it, you need a really Strong Technology engine and the talent that has the experience to manage customers in a comp different way than weve managed customers in our media business. Certainly in the past. No comment from disney on services will launch or how much theyll cost, but the company says this announcement today represents a strategic shift in how its bringing its content directly to consumers. Im julia boorstin. Google fired an employee who reportedly wrote a memo suggesting men are better suited for Technology Jobs than women. It hit a nerve in Silicon Valley, which has been criticized for its lack of diversity. Josh lipton has more googles c spot. He wanted employees to feel free to express themselves, but doesnt want to be thought of as al bi and bullying at his company. He decided the om option was to fire james demore. He said that the engineer had violated the companys code of conduct. That code says googles are expected to do their utmost to create a culture free of harassment, intimidation, bias and unlawful discrimination. He believes he violated that code when he wrote a tenpage memo arguing that innate differences between the sexes coul lack women working in tech. For example, he wrote, women on average have more openness directed towards feelings and aesthetics rather than ideas. Women generally also have a stronger interest in people rather than things relative to men. These two differences in part explain why women relatively prefer jobs in social or artistic areas. Googlers were outraged by that memo. Some even threatening to quit in protest. He was accused of sexism and some believe he made the right call. I think he wanted to create the controversy and the discussion and got his opportunity. Despite the fact he didnt get his chance to talk, he got plenty of chance to talk and this is the consequence of what he did. Others disagree, however. He also argued in that memo that google alienated his conservative employees. Commentators came to his defense, including rich, editor of national review, who wrote it is one thing to disagree with the memo. Another to believe the views should be forbidden. It speebing to a broader topic this Silicon Valley. The treatment of women in tech. A hightech issue after uriber got hit with allegations of sexual harassment. After being charged with inappropriate behavior. Demore did respond to requests for comments for his story, but despite might not be over. He is now apparently considering legal action against his former employer. Im josh lipton, San Francisco. Here to discuss the memo and how companies can manage important but controversial dialogue are suzie welsh and bill george. Welcome to both. So happy you could both be here. Suz suzie, your point of view is your controversy about this memo could have been avoided if google had created an environment or had a culture where a conversation on a topic as important as diversity could be had and created a kind of forum where maybe a politically unpopular point of view could have gotten aired could you explain . It seems that this employee took to this memo because he felt he had no voice and needed to get his opinions out and he wanted them discussed. My question is was there a way that he could have done this, that didnt create this fire storm . Did he for instance, approach googles Diversity Team and have the conversation with them. That would seem the appropriate way to do it. Do they invite people with different views to come forward and have conversations . Are there forum where feel safe to raise those issues . It seems there maybe wasnt sugsalized mechanism for this individual or others like him to come forward and express t dang. Especially in a place like google, which is perceived, because it is, to be so powerful in our lives and in tech. Bill, what about that, that there needs to be b some sort of way for employees to express within opinions and the other issue is though its those opinions viewed as discriminatory and they are expressed a company, what can they do about it . Well, there are ways . Ive been there three times in recent years and they have ways. Its a very open culture. Its one in which youre encouraged to express your view, but that doesnt give you the right to stereotype people based on race, gender or any other type. You have to look at the real people. I dont think this is a political issue at all. I think its one that perpetuates a culture that discriminates against women, against minorities and makes it all the more difficult for google to right the imbalance that exists in Silicon Valley and frankly, on wall street and many other places, and so, i think having a code of conduct, which is clear about this, by the way, its the same thing with foul language like we saw general kelly enforce in the white house. Or inappropriate sexual advances in uber. I think its totally appropriate to have a company speech doesnt give you the right to say thin. And so, i think he did the right thing. Id like to follow up with you, bill. My question is would you have fired this individual . For that memo . I would have, yes. And we had a very open culture. Forums. 00 lines. All kinds of things, but putting a memo like that, that is overtly discriminatory and stereotyping women in particular is wrong. Look, as a man, i take offense to the memo. Id like to think im an open person. I dont want to think i dont have empathy, im not cooperative or that i like things and not people. This kind of thing gets away from who is the authentic person, so i take offense to it as a man. Though i have to admit, i havent like this. To your point about mechanisms being in place, i take the point if there is a legitimate beef with the company or you feel that youve been wrong, but this was diskr discriminatory langu do it still hold there is a legitimate forum in which to express that through a companys procedures . Can we take this man who wrote a memo at his word where he says i believe in inclusi inclusiveness, i believe sexism exists. He says a lot of things at the beginning at the end of the memo that seem to suggest that hes not against women being what e saying is i dont know his heart, is im not sure the way were going about increasing diversity is right. Can we have a conversation if our techniques about increasing diversity are right. He has to be out of his mind in the context of Silicon Valley to write a memo that says i think diversity is wrong, especially since he knows enough about the internet and compus eyedt was g revealed. So, hed have to be an absolute fool to do that. Now, i think he tried to say about the beginning of the end, i am not against inclusiveness and women, but are there differences . Were not succeeded. Can we talk about whether were toing doing this the right way . Thats not an illegitimate question to ask. We could spend a whole hour or more on this. And with you two would be great. Thanks so much. Thanks. Still ahead, a manufacturing revival . Im Brian Sullivan in wisconsin and perhaps the key thing that delivered the presidency to dont j.
