An email leak rocked the democrats and british cyclist chris frolme won the tour de france. Here are the sights and sounds of the week. Reagans statemented assassin is out. Japan, people have arrested, stabbed to death for a home for disabled people. Turkey orders journalists. Investigating the leak at the Democratic National committee. There is no question that the dnc was supporting Hillary Clinton. Rose this is above my pay grade. I dont know. Prosecutors dropped all charges in the freddy gray case. As long as this was a fair process, justice was done. Rose verizon buys yahoo. It represents a huge amount of scale for verizon. Rose an englishman triumphs in the tour de france. I accept your nomination for president of the United States she always wants to move the ball forward. Grandma would be so, so proud of you tonight nothing truly prepares you for demands of the ofl office. There are oval office. There are times whether i disagree with Hillary Clinton. But let me tell you we should put them aside for the of our country. I want to see a woman become president but it cant be her shes a disaster rose a solar powered plane circles the globe. The first ever around the world flight without using a single drop of oil. And so, my friends, it is with humility, determination, and boundless confidence in americas promise, that i accept your nomination for president of the United States rose Hillary Clinton made history thursday night when she became the first woman ever to be nominated president by a Major Political party. If fighting for affordable childcare and paid family leave is playing the woman card then deal me in rose it has been a bruising primary season and the nominee reached out to the disaffected on both sides of americas political divide. Whatever party you belong to, or if you belong to no party at all. If you share these beliefs, this is your campaign. Rose and Hillary Clinton was on the attack. Highlighting the differences between her convention and Donald Trumps convention. Hes taken the Republican Party a long way from morning in america to midnight in america. Rose she cast doubt on her opponents integrity. Donald trump says he wants to make America Great again. Well, he could start by actually making things in america again. Rose she challenged her opponents readiness. Donald trump says and this is a quote i know more about i. S. I. S. Than the generals do. No, donald. You dont. Rose and she also questioned her opponents temperament. Imagine him in the oval Office Facing a real crisis. A man you can bait with a tweet is not aman we can trust with Nuclear Weapons rose joining me from miami in nbc news in new york is megan murphy, Washington Bureau chief of bloomberg, and Jonathan Karl and john heilman, the cohost of with all due respect. I begin with john heilman. Does Hillary Clinton advance her cause, did she do what she needed to do at this convention and how will i. T. Benefit her . I think big answer is yes. I think by a common consensus among people who are interested in image, that is what the conventions usually are, in addition to unifying the party they are a television production, this was well staged well crafted convention. Whether that translates to bump in the polls or not i dont know. Advancing the kind of case she wants to make against this particular republican nominee it laid it out in a very rigorous and powerful way. Rose katie. I think what the convention did a relatively good job of doing was try humanize Hillary Clinton and what you had at this convention there, speech after speech, who Hillary Clinton was behind the scenes as a wife as a mother how she has played into this completely world we live in now for the past 30, 40 years and i think they did a good job of that. The question is, does that translate to voters . I was speaking to republican operatives today and did that get to her trust worthiness and that didnt get to that today. We have flown her for three decades in the public eye and thats what we see journalists and people in the media talking about, were they effective in humanizing her . She seems like an elusive figure. Rose lets come back to that. I think they did humanize her. Did they raise her to the caricature figure, are we see seeing the real Hillary Clinton the first time . By bra this the optimistic vision, american greatness themes that have been central to the Republican Party since Ronald Reagan, now found its way to thing democratic convection. That began with the barack obama speech. It did. Consider that speech for a moment. Weve never seen a speech like that from an outgoing american president. Usually its a perfunctory passing of the baton. This is not simply a praising of the Hillary Clinton but a take down of donald trump by the outgoing president. You didnt have Ronald Reagan going after Michael Dukakis in 1998. Bill clinton never mentioned george w. Bush in his the convention in 2000. I know the system better than anyone else so im the only one qualified to fix it, obviously Hillary Clinton seized on that. A real politico would have looked at that and said this line should not be in this speech, it does come across as crazily self focused and ego maniacal. To hear that in his own words and to be able to throw it back and say america is not about one person who can the fix things, america is about we not about i. That became a true in obama speech and hillary speech and it leaves obama to a critique that could be very powerful. And something that katie is talking about. Elizabeth warren is here, shes the senior senator of massachusetts this is day 2 of the convention in philadelphia and she made a remarkable speech last night in which she showed her own convictions that made her become elected as senator in minnesota. The Democratic Party and the campaign for president. Did she call you up and say i want you to know ive decided on tim kaine . Yes. Rose im sorry elizabeth. She didnt tell me who, she said it wasnt going to be me. Rose what did you say . Bad choice hillary, you have missed a chance hillary, you v could have done better hillary. No, tim kaine is a truly decent human rose but how different is he from you politically in terms of where you are in terms of policy . Well, we have our differences. Rose on trade . Trade. But tim says hes going to be with hillary on this. Rose vice president. Thats right. Least going to stick with her foreign trade. Rose what else . Wawments, financial regulation, but heres the thing. He is a decent man. Hes had a lot of experience. And he will be helpful to her, both in the campaign and he will be historica helpful to her as e president. Rose what does she have to do, convince america to trust her, she has to trust america to believe in her. I think she has to reveal more of who Hillary Clinton is. Y who is she that we dont know . You know shes a fighter and theres something that drives this kind of fight. This is a woman whos been punched at for 25 years, right . And she keeps getting up and keeps fighting for same thing. For women for children for health care for human rights. Theres something deep in you that makes you stand up and do that kind of fighting and i think thats what shes got to show people but i tell you this. I like women who fight. Rose i do, too, very much. Good. Rose one last question about the senate. Sure. Rose Washington Post had a stories about you emerging as a power in the senate. Is this elizabeth warrens diplomat . I feel like right now, america is here warrens moment . I feel like right now, america is here and the congress is here and its time to get the alignment of the American People are. There are a core set of things we ought to be doing in this country that i that have huge st for republicans and democrats and minimum wage, we ought to expand social security. Thats the sort of things that most americans just think are good common sense change. Rose you cant do that without republicans. Im glad this is not republican america has to convince them. America will convince them. Thats whats going on here. Right now. The shifts you see, what we talk about, is because america understands that we have a problem. This country is no longer being run to strengthen the middle, to give opportunity rose do we need to fix system . For working families, we got to fix the system. Its good to see you charlie, you take care. Rose the man who led the team that brought Hillary Clinton to victory when she was nominated for president in philadelphia is a Young Political strategy gist named robbie mook. Im not an International Affairs specialist but russian state actors broke into the system they stole these emails and as a result they are likely the ones who leaked them for the purpose of disrupting this convention, disrupting the campaign. And hurting Hillary Clinton. I think the other thing weve seen in the last few weeks is that donald trump said that he doesnt think the United States should necessarily defend our Eastern European allies against the russians. The republican platform russian friendly. Rose you say the russians tried to influence the election and hacked the dnc. They are liked the ones two took them released them and did it for the purpose of helping donald trump. Rose thats the points, probably did it, there is no evidence that they did it to influence american election. I think its awfully convenient timing this these emails were leaked on the eve of the convention. It is a highly suspicion coincidence. We need to have the american authorities investigate this. We are told that rose see donald trump elected president anybody . No one has made that direct connection yet. What we know is the dnc was broken into. We do not have knowledge that the rnc was broken into and we have not seen similar leak to hurts donald trump. Thats what we know. Rose what is next in the story,. The dnc is conducting. Review, obviously, appropriate action will be taken. We are proud to know that we ran bernie sanders. We ran a primary on ideas, those ideas are reflected in our platform and we are going to be working together. Senator sanders has said he will work on behalf of secretary clinton. Rose are you surprised that having been in politics as long as she has, first lady of arkansas, secretary of state, candidate and nominee of the Democratic Party that there are still questions about character and about trust and about who she is . Hillary clinton has been a pioneer for women in this country. And she has fought hard. For things Like Health Care reform, you know she fought for Health Care Reform in the 90s she failed what did she do she got right back up and kept fighting. Worked in Newt GingrichsRepublican Congress rose as first lady. What does that do, that puts a target on you. She has been the subject of relentless attacks for decades, why were the republicans investigating benghazi . They said themselves i. T. Wa tho suppress poll numbers. Rose you have determined that the election is going to be a dive down, the worst in terms of insults in terms of character assassination we have ever seen and does that turn people off . I think it i think election could be that. I think the Republican Convention was that. You heard doom and gloom. You heard a lot of talk about Hillary Clinton. We barely heard anything about specific ideas that donald trump would actually make a difference for people. Hillary clinton is going to talk about how we can make our country stronger by coming together, making investment in jobs bigger than 70 years, but my overall point is this can be an uplifting election. We continue with matthew dowd, chief political analyst at abc news and steve mcmahan, political strategist. In a sense the weakening of Political Party . I think youre watching something significant that occurred in america in the last 150 years, i think were headed towered that and headed towards a growth of something influence, new party, something new, change Democratic Party, change Republican Party but were head thread. Rose multiple parties . Multiple parties. If you think about the common strain of the Donald Trumpbernie Sanders campaign they are basically exaibs of agriefment and an argument to middle class voters, you dont get what youre supposed to, you are working harder and making less. Trade deals, donald trump says its trade deals and immigration, but its trade deals. Can you conceivably have a working Peoples Party not necessarily a socialist party but its kind of we get what we deserve kind of thing. Rose how much is going to depend on the group of economic people who basically have income insecurity, who feel like the best in life has passed them by, and are frustrated, angry, how large is that group and is that group, if its large, can they determine the election . Well, i think what youre seeing is the real fundamental pivot in this election, which has not happened before. This is not a geographic election, this is a demographic election. The pivot is on working class without college and with college. She is overperforming whites with college degrees, he is overperforming whites without college degrees. Is there enough voters in that group to do it . Donald trump could win this collection primarily because he turned out to be the change they wanted even though slightly ifnlg risky. Rose thats interesting. How does she make the case to be a change agent . For a lot of different reasons, of course she has been around for a very long time and she is as matthew suggests the establishment. On the other hand, they even have a sense of the position shes held and some of of the accomplishments shes responsible for but i dont know that they have a very good sense of Hillary Clinton the person. And one of the things that you see in political campaigns all the time, it is why candidates start their campaign with a bio. A shared vision of the world, i dont know athey have that with her. Rose than the interesting, one of the best known people in the world, parts of the things that her friends know are not known. Its interesting that two of the people who voters dont really know what they are like in private, fundamentally, donald trump and Hillary Clinton. There is a sense of these mammoth public individuals, but who are they really . Its what ivanka tried to talk about. There are a group of voters that dont like either one of these folks, that dont trust either one of these folks but theyre looking for a signal what should they do. Rose what happens between the end of the conventions end of july and labor day, when the campaign really kicks off, what can happen in that period . A lot of people feel it goes dark, but i think not. It is going to be the most important vetting period of the entire campaign. Labor day gets on a campaign, august is a vetting period. There is a vetting that needs to be done on the republican side and mike pence, and vetting on tim kaine and Hillary Clinton. To me august is going to be nasty but its going to be a serious vetting of these candidates. For much on the 1950s and 60s, the photographer de dion arbus, the photographs taken in her career are on public displ display. Here is our story. So we are here at the mt. Boyer museum in new york city. With the curator in charge of the department of photography. Why dont you start by telling us a little bit about dion arbus as an artist . Dan was born in 1423, and in 1956 she explored the streets of the city. These photographs have never been seen before. We have this space and were calling it met broyer. Each of the pictures is on its own wall. We have an individual relationship one on one with the pictures. Just like she did with her subject. Why dont we take a look at a few examples. Fantastic. You get the discover the images on your own just like she did on the streets of the city. And this is one of my favorite pictures. Its from 1956. And what were looking at is an interaction that she had with a pedestrian on fifth avenue. And what i find so remarkable and what shocked me when i discovered this image is that she sort of has the ability to separate the individual from the society. We also have a really nice picture of the most common figure in new york city, probably still to this day, a taxi driver with passenger or two in the back. This is a picture again that has never been seen before. Were presenting it for first time. And when you get close to it you can see theres sort of this theatrical set. Theres a protagonist and minor character and then boouferl beal backdrop which is the city of new york which wraps around the taxi and wraps around this figure. Photographs are still images but she was very aware of narratives and story telling in all of her pictures. So what would you like the viewer to take away from this exhibition . That dion arbus, explored who we are in the human condition, she wanted an interaction with her subjects, she wanted to have this sort of magnetic relationship, she accomplished it and that really is her achievement. Rose here is a look at the week ahead. Sunday, the final round of the pga championship. Monday is army day in china. Tuesday is Opening Night for Broadway Revival of cats. Wednesday the 2016 world yoyo contest in cleveland, ohio. Thursday, the annual lucille ball comedy festival in james town, new york. Friday, the Opening Ceremony of the 31st olympiad in rio. The floyd fest, Music Festival goes all weekend in virginia. Rose and on saturday, barnes and noble stores hold parties for harry potter and the cursed child the newest book in the series. Thats charlie rose the week for this week. For all of us here thank you for watching. Im charlie rose, well see you next time. Funding for charlie rose was provided by the captioning sponsored by rose welcome to the program. We begin this evening with a recap of the Democratic National convention which made history by nominating the first woman to be president of the United States. We talk about Hillary Clinton and more with john heilemann, katy tur, megan murphy and Jonathan Karl. Michelle obamas speech in talking about how important toifts her daughter to have a woman as president , i thought that was one of the most powerful and gavel niegz moments for Hillary Clintons campaign. Yes it was about a progressive optimistic image in contrast to trump but it was also this is symbolic, a day of reckoning and a choice of ages for where were going on the pathway. They did a good job. This is a serious moment for our future. Rose also this week some of the speeches and the bes
