Trump preserve, protect, and defend the constitution of the United States. Reporter withreporter those 35 words, the transfer of power was complete. The 45th president had won a mandate to be a disruptor to politics as normal. Pres. Trump today, we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another, or from one party to another. We are transferring power from washington, d. C. And getting it back to you, the people. On ther if the vips podium were starting to feel uncomfortable, President Trump was just getting started. He painted a hellish picture of america, different from the one barack obama said he was leaving behind. Pres. Trump for too many of our citizens, a different reality exists. Mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities. Factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation. Withucation system flushed cash, but which leaves are young and beautiful students deprived of all knowledge. And the crime, and the gangs, and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and rubbed our country robbed our country of so much unrealized potential. This american carnage stops right here, and stops right now. Jon and then a message to the rest of the world. Dont look to us to bail you out. Weve got different priorities now. Pres. Trump we assembled here today are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city, in inry foreign capital, and every hollow power. From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. Trump we will follow to rules, follow two simple by american and hire american. Jon and been an appeal for unity. Pres. Trump it is time to remember the old wisdom our soldiers will never forget. Whether we are black or brown or white, we all bleed the same red blood of patriots. Is onet surely if there take away from this inaugural, it is that President Trump intends to govern as he campaigned, uncompromisingly. Pres. Trump together, we will make america strong again. We will make america wealthy again. We will make america proud again. We will make america safe again. And yes, together, we will make America Great again. Andk you, god bless you, god bless america. [applause] enormouscrowds werent , sadly nothing like they were eight years ago for Barack Obamas inauguration. But for those who came, this is a day to remember. For others, a day to forget. How painful must it have been for Hillary Clinton, who pulled 3 million more votes and donald trump, but lost the electoral college. Later, the new president would salute the one he vanquished. Pres. Trump there is something i wanted to say, because i was very honored when i heard that residents bill clinton and secretary Hillary Clinton was coming today, and i think it is appropriate to say [applause] pres. Trump and id like you to stand up. [applause] jon after the ceremony, the final exit of the obamas. They are now private citizens. A u. S. Marine helicopter standing by to ferry them out of the city to start their new life. Earlier this morning, one final act in the white house for the outgoing president , a handwritten letter to his successor. And in the formal welcome. Barack obama and michelle greeting the new occupants of the house, donald and la nina trump and Melania Trump. From the outgoing first lady to her successor. And the 44th and 45th president s together. Theceremony was over, and moment is done. Now donald trump is making his way along pennsylvania avenue back to the white house and the awesome responsibility of being president of the United States of america. And now the real work begins. The parade is another central piece of the pageant on Inauguration Day, with military bands marching through the streets. At this being donald trump, there had to be one surprise, and it came as he was approaching the white house. He got out of the car, near the but moreing, importantly, right across the road from the Trump International hotel erie it international hotel. Donald trump the businessman and donald trump the president seemed to be going handinhand. Surprisefter his election victory, barack obama said the world would keep on spending, the sun would continue to rise. He is right, it has. But this morning, washington, america, and the rest of the world has woken to another to an uncertain new dawn. Jon sopel, bbc news. Katty for more on what we heard today and what we can expect from the trump administration, i spoke a short time ago with former Virginia Governor and republican president ial candidate himself, jim gilmore. Thank you very much. I want to ask you about the president s inaugural address. It has raised quite a lot of concern around the world. This is going to be about america and America First. Should americas allies be worried . Mr. Gilmore i dont think so. I dont think the message is america only. Its that this president intends to take care of the forgotten people in this country, who there is a sense that the previous administrations have not necessarily looked after them. Now it is time to put them first. But just because america intends to look after its own interests, every other country in the world does the same thing. The fact of the matter is, their allies can come together and it does not have to be mutually exclusive. Katty imagine, for a moment, a german leader making those comments. Mr. Gilmore i can, and i would expect them to, but that does not mean we are no longer allies of the germans. We are and will be. The fact is, if america grows stronger and we are more able and are a stronger and more solid people, we will be better allies to our friends. Katty this is a president who takes office with record low Approval Ratings. You have long been a supporter of donald trump, although you had your own president ial bid before that. It could have been used standing you standing up there, governor. Are you concerned that he takes office at a time when a lot of americans are not happy with their new president . Mr. Gilmore i am not, and thats because this particular president does not want to walk in and say, my single achievement is being popular. I think what he wants to do is to achieve his goals. I think he wants to carry out his program that he defined in the campaign and defined today as well. That is his mission. His goal is to not please skeptics or to suddenly get good poll numbers. Its to do the job. Katty should he reach out to the people who did not vote for him, who are unhappy . Mr. Gilmore he can, but it is the purpose of persuading them to get on board with the idea of making America Great again and carrying out these programs. No one wants to be excluded, but at the same time he does not what he believes is the best need to give up what he believes is the best interests of the country just to make some money happy. Somebody happy. Katty governor, you have been in politics for a long time. This has been your life, your work. You know how difficult this job is. You have seen someone come into office who has never held Political Office. He has a cabinet, many of whom have never held Political Office as well. This is an unusual moment, however optimistic you might feel. This is an unusual moment in american politics. Has the country taken a bit of a gamble . Mr. Gilmore i think the country has chosen a direction. They had a clear choice in this election between more of the same, and even doubling down on more of the same with Hillary Clinton with her background, and donald trump and the new direction he wanted to take us in. I think the choice was very clear. I think that most people expected Hillary Clinton to be elected, but to our surprise, working men and women chose otherwise, and as a result of that, donald trump is the president , and i think he will lead us in a new direction. Katty jim gilmore, thanks for coming in. As we saw, tens of thousands of mr. Trumps supporters came into watches swearing in, but away from capitol hill there were also clashes between police and protesters who were opposed to donald trump. Police say more than 90 people were arrested. Every little thing is going to be all right reporter when american president s are sworn in, its usually a time at least to talk about healing divisions, but few have had such divided states to try to reunite. On one side is team trump. Hundreds of thousands of them turned out from across the land. Once people see give them a year they will see they have more money in their pockets, they will be like, this is a good deal. We dont need anybody else talking like, blah, blah, blah. I feel like wishing that President Trump fails is being on a plane and hes pilot and hoping it crashes. Hes president , so youve got to wish the best for him. Reporter an underground movement of the disillusioned and dispossessed rallied around the trump campaign. Today they came from parts of the country many feel have been forgotten. Emerging for the dawning of a very different day in america. I think it is going to bring a new era of hope and prosperity for our country. The thing i like about donald trump is he is an alpha male, as opposed to our previous commanderinchief. Hes an alpha male. He is a shaker and mover. He has no agenda other than to do the right thing. Reporter which is pretty much the opposite of what todays protesters think, as they swarmed past a car of Trump Supporters. Who are you . Reporter bbc news. From london . Awesome. We are conservative. This is ridiculous. Reporter you dont think they have a right to object and protest . At the right time. Not this. There is no class in this. Support the usa reporter there was anger on the streets of the capitol today, but even more striking was the sense of fear about what the next four years will bring. Hundreds of people have come to washington, d. C. To protest the inauguration of donald trump. This is a real expression of the anger felt across america by many people. Some of them are objecting to the policies that trump plans to introduce. Others question the legitimacy of the 45th president. Not my president reporter he may have lost the election she may have lost the election, but dont expect divisions to heal anytime soon. I feel afraid. Reporter what are you apprehensive about . I think there are a lot of people who are vulnerable in our country who will suffer under this presidency. Reporter from anger to violence, some businesses were attacked by a small group of protesters. Dozens were arrested. It seems donald trump will have to work hard to be president of the United States of america. Ian pannell, bbc news, washington. Katty we should say most of the protesters were peaceful, but i have covered five u. S. Inaugurations and i have never seen island protests like these today. Violent and just like these today. They are not part of every inauguration. Bbcs laurahowever, trevelyan is there. Whats happening now . We just had a unit go faster. That shows you what a different america it is. This is a parade showcasing Rural America and americas connection with the military. Very different. You were talking about previous inaugurations. , with barack obama, the inaugurations were a lot more about americas cities. Here it is very different. For Donald Trumps supporters, this is a joyous day, but even amongst his most loyal supporters, ive heard people say to me, i wish he had done a little more to reach out during his speech to the other side, to those who did not vote for him. You can see americas divisions reflected, even here along the parade route, with a lot of protectors. But the Trump Supporters here are thrilled that the president got out of his limousine and walked down pennsylvania avenue. Completely thrilled by that. But this is definitely more subdued and previous inaugurations ive been to. The viewing stands behind me were packed in 2000 nine, and some empty seats today. Not surprising given what a Bruising Campaign it was and how divided the country remains. Divided the country remains. Katty any sense among donald Trump Supporters that you have spoken to over the course of today, laura, of his low Approval Ratings, whether they are concerned about that, whether they believe the polls that show him coming into office with the lowest Approval Ratings of any president . Reporter katty, some of them would say the polls were wrong during the election, and they think these polls are showing that are showing he has lower Approval Ratings are some nonsense. But those who have reflected more on the nature of the campaign and how the president elect behaved are concerned, and they want donald trump to heal the divisions in this country. , among even bring back our jobs and stop illegal immigration. I heard people say unite the country. When you say, how you do that, people are not very clear. There is a sense that they would like the new president to tone down his rhetoric a bit and bring in those who voted against him. They Laura Trevelyan on parade route. You are watching bbc world news america. It still to come, what can we tell about Donald Trumps presidency during the town from the tone he said during the course of the day . We will look ahead. , washington, d. C. Will bbc news a womens march, which is expected to draw thousands of people. It is a Grassroots Movement highlighting issues such as race and gender equality. We spoke with those behind this event. We are marching for womens rights. I am marching because i care about our planet and all of its inhabitants. Black women, latina women, all women are strong. Reporter the womens march began when women were devastated about the election of donald trump. Then it morphed. It morphed into a movement. This march is not about donald trump, because it transcends donald trump. It is not about Hillary Clinton, because it transcends the 2016 election. It is for women who dont even march with us. It is for women who support the new president , not that we dont, because the new president is our president , we do support him. But it is for all women. People were yearning, i think, for a way to see and enact change. You can literally see the change you are making. I received a note from a woman who says she cant go to the march because she suffers from ptsd as a rape survivor, but she made hats to send in. What i would not want President Trump to do is ignore us or diminish us in any way, because womens rights are human rights. That does not have a political affiliation. That is simply something that needs to be. Katty lets get more on the inauguration. The fence are still underway in washington. Today, donald trump speech gave us a clue on how we use on how he is going to govern. Joining me is the director of the school of media and Public Affairs at George Washington university. You have listened to many inaugural addresses. How is this different . In many ways. First, his declaration was that is big theme that he brings to washington will be to default power from washington back to the states. Thats going to govern everything. To bang, its America First. Several things were not mentioned, but this theme of America First pervaded. Thirdly, maybe firstly, is a very dark view of america. The same dark view he projected. He talked about schools flushed with cash, but not teaching children. He talked about shuttered factories. Thats fine, but it also comes at a time that americas unemployment is below 5 . Our cities, while crime has ticked up in some places, generally surely generationally it is down. A very complicated mix of themes. Pictures ofve americas first family just taken over the white house watching the parade route. Trump, rump, melania baron and donald trump. This is not just a change from a Democratic White House to a republican white house. Change of power, tone, policy, almost every single thing you can imagine is about to change in washington. Guest the first thing i have to say is, when Melania Trump walked out, the first thing i thought was jackie o. Just remarkable. There is going to be a glamour to this presidency, a billionaire president , a glamorous wife, fifth avenue, a penthouse lifestyle. Katty the first family always looks immaculate. Guest we have not had that in quite some time, although Michelle Obama brought glamour herself to it. This president is the oldest america has had, 70 years old, and he is the only president america has had that has never served the country in a capacity. Hes never been in the military, never held elected office, never been on a school board. His flame of reference is entirely that of a corporate titan and a media celebrity. Govern where you have to build coalitions and operate at a different level is also going to be something to watch. The family,re is both in terms of influence in business, that is going to be much broader and more pervasive than we have seen before. Already had some reaction from around the world to the days events, particularly to the inaugural address and make America First message of that address, and then some concerns. Allies right to be concerned about this president . Guest yes. They are certainly right to be concerned and wonder when donald trump said the other day that essentially he equated Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel and im going to see how it goes, whoa, thats very interesting area when he speaks offthecuff thatsks about how very interesting. When he speaks offthecuff and talks about natos role, that is a big departure. Katty thank you for joining me.
