The pair were found guilty three weeks ago at a trial but for , legal reasons the media has been unable to report it. The counterterrorist chief has spent almost 20 years trying to convict him. Heres our correspondent jim june kelly. Tossed out and new york, moscow and new york, and some of clever, charismatic, and dangerous. Anjem choudary has long been a provocative figure could four years police and intelligence agencies have been monitoring his speeches. He knew this and as a trained lawyer, he knew how to stay on the right side of the law. Until now. He posted extremist material online, and if you look at his influence and impact it was , available to people across the world. Without a doubt the speeches and material he posted was used to radicalize others. In my view the u. K. Is a safer place with him behind bars. June choudary has been convicted of inviting support for socalled Islamic State. The jury wasnt told that one of his keenest followers fled the u. K. While on bail and joined i. S. He is suspected of being the new jihadi john seen in this video. He posted this picture of himself when he arrived in syria. His newborn son in one arm, an ak47 in the other. The injustice done to the Muslim Community by the blair regime june amongst the others was this man to fall under his spell. He went on to murder on the streets of woolwich. Richard dart was another choudary disciple. June here choudary was actually converting him to islam. Three years ago he was jailed for terrorism offenses. As a filmmaker, his brother met the radical preacher and saw how he operated. He is kind of like a father figure to these young guys. People hang on his every word. He knows what buttons to push he radicalizes people, he , indoctrinate stem with the extremist ideology. June choudary wasnt always so antiwestern. As a student he liked to drink, and was not offended by pictures of seminaked women. From his 20s, he became a political zealot. Anjem choudary delivered speeches on streets like this, meetings, and on the internet. He has been linked to countless extremists in this country and abroad, but he was never charged with any serious offense. It was the conflict in syria which changed this. In the summer of 2014, the i. S. Leadership declared the establishment of an Islamic State. Choudary pledged an oath of allegiance to it and invited others to support it. The leader who blessed being at who relished being at the center of events had crossed a legal line. The verdict could not reported until the end of another trial. After two decades, the inflammatory rhetoric of Anjem Choudary has finally been silenced. June kelly, bbc news. Katty a conviction that took decades. Russia opened a new front today using an air base in iran to launch strikes. The u. S. State department calls the development unfortunate but not surprising and that washington is still assessing the extent of russianiranian cooperation. For more on the developments, i spoke with former state Department Official vali nasr, now at the Johns Hopkins school of advanced international studies. It is unusual for the iranians to allow a foreign country user base and the russians to use another countrys base in the middle east. Why now . Vali the stakes are very high for both of them in syria. Both countries have reputations on the line and they cannot afford to lose. The ramifications elsewhere in the region or globally would be quite high. We have seen that the battle of aleppo has not turned out the way they planned, that the turks and arabs have successfully supplied weapons to the opposition to break the siege of aleppo to a good extent. They need to escalate. They also need to send a signal internationally that they have a stronger relationship than is advertised in the west. The russians want to say that they do have options in the region, and a Strong Alliance in the region, and the iranians want to send a signal to arab neighbors, turkey and the United States that i have an ally in russia. Katty militarily what difference does it make . Being able to fly from iran, which is so close to the russians . Vali well, tactically it is closer but the larger issue is strategic. Both countries are signaling that if the u. S. And the arab support the opposition, the price will be a close relationship between russia and iran. Iran and russia can also escalate in their own ways. If you are sitting in washington this is quite surprising. This is not unsurprising. Having the russians develop a tighter military relationship with iran, pushing iranians, who history with russia going back to the 19th century contemplating opening the base , to the Russian Military is a significant strategic development. Katty where does this leave the prospect of washingtons own political negotiations with russia over the situation in syria . Vali well, we are increasingly losing leverage. What is the leverage to bring the russians and iranians to the table . Theyve indicated they are willing to escalate and deepen ties. We have not come up with any new strategy about syria. Katty ash carter, secretary of defense, is clearly reluctant to think that he is the person that seems to be saying i dont know if the u. S. Can work with russia. Does this strengthen voices in the administration saying we cannot negotiate with moscow at the moment . Vali no, we can always negotiate, but we can always change the terms of the negotiation and if we are able to find a leverage over russia. We cannot keep going to the table with the same head and try with the same hand and try to get a different result from the last time. It is not going to work. We have to change the game plan on russians and the iranians. Either that or we have to come to an agreement that assad is going to stay and we are only interested in fighting isis. That is a different conversation. Katty thank you for coming in. The Guantanamo Bay detention facility have been released to the united arab emirates, marking the largest single transferred detainees. Some republicans, including donald trump, were critical saying that it will harm national security. All adams has more. It is the largest release of prisoners so far from the controversial Detention Center in cuba. Some have been held without charge for more than 14 years. Throughout his presidency, barack obama has been determined to close the camp. President obama with this plan we have the opportunity finally to eliminate terrorist propaganda tool and enhance our national security, and most importantly, uphold the values that define us as americans. For many years it has been clear that the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay does not advance our national security. It undermines it. Reporter the process of clearing detainees for released is glacial. It is unlikely the latest announcement was timed for any political purpose. It does serve as a riposte to republican president of candidate donald trump. Mr. Trump but i said i think we should go much, much, much further than waterboarding. Reporter there were once almost 700 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. After years of releases, there are now just 61 left. Campaigners have given the latest move qualified welcome. They will be returning in some places to places where they cannot meet their families. There often sent to countries not connected. Not be to be travel will afforded to them. They might not be able to see their children now grown into , men and young women. They may have missed the deaths of their parents and young and other relatives. Reporter the Obama Administration wants to put remaining detainees on trial in the u. S. , a move fiercely resisted by congress. The long torture solder of Guantanamo Bay will rumble on long after barack obama has left office. Katty the bbc has reported from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility earlier this year. You came back just a few months ago. What happens, according to your reporting, to these detainees once they get sent back somewhere like uae . Reporter the same thing that has happened to other detainees, confined in a sense in terms of how they travel and communicate with people, certainly for the first year, on this probation period, and then they are able to travel and communicate much more freely. The worry is that some of these will embarrass the u. S. By reentering militancy. As has happened. Katty after this release was announced, there does seem to be debate in the u. S. On the figures of recidivism. Are we clear on how many of those who have been released in the past have returned it to jihad or extremist action . Reporter they are talking about 5 of people who have been released from guantanamo who have reentered militancy and rejoined militant groups. That is what the government is saying. There are those in the opposition who are saying that it is much higher than that. That is what is being talked about. There are those within the government as well as president obama saying that just threw it symbolism, it is a recruiting tooljust through its similar some it is a recruiting tool around the world. The captives in orange jumpsuits, for example. There is another thing. Something that i saw when i was there. It is a huge, sprawling complex. We are down to 61 detainees will , detainees, but it is very expensive. I was there in spring and early last year and there was construction work going on. It is very expensive. The government says that if you dont agree that this needs to be closed on moral grounds and if there is a way of holding these people in a perfectly safe way on the mainland, at least in fiscal terms as something that needs to be closed. He has made no traction in that respect. We have heard from human Rights Groups saying that they are very worried that when president obama hands over power there is still going to be this offshore facility and the next president can do whatever they like. Katty at least 10 people have been killed and thousands of homes destroyed in historic flooding that has struck louisiana. Many have needed rescue after being trapped. With the floodwaters moving south, there are additional concerns. Jane obrien has the latest. Jane the overwhelming scale of the disaster is hard to grasp. The figures only had at the catastrophe. In louisiana alone, 40,000 homes have been dilute by floods. Eluged by floods unlike hurricane katrina, the storm has no names. It was in a Tropical Storm or hurricane. Y times people and people underestimate the impact. This is unprecedented and we are seeing unprecedented flood levels as the waters move south. The human toll is only starting to sing in. Sink in. This couple returned to their home to salvage what little they could. Is my entire life that i worked my entire life for, washed away. It is the end of her life, the end of your world. 30,000 people have been rescued from the rising water, unable to reach land, they have been plucked to safety by helicopters and boats. We picked up a lady trying to get her dad. Boats and are trying to do it we can. In a time of crisis and disaster, it is time for everyone to pull together if they can. Rogan, ith communications it is unknown how many others are missing or dead. Automobiles lot of that are not where they are supposed to be. They have been washed off of roadways. We will have to search and mark each automobile and pray that we do not find any deceased motorists in the automobiles. Makeshift shelters survivors continue to arrive. Government Financial Aid is already on the way. In the midst of this human tragedy lurks the dark side. A nighttime curfew has been declared to stop looters. Still the waters rise. Katty dramatic pictures from louisiana. You are watching bbc world news america. Still to come on the program, it is not only Donald Trumps words, but his hands. We ask an expert to walk us through the nominees favorite motions. Was heldphotographer by the socalled Islamic State for 13 months in syria after being captured in may of 2013. Tortured in the first weeks he tried to commit suicide. He was held with james foley, who was executed. He was released in 2014 after his family raised 1 million in ransom. I was pretty sure that i would never be able to come home alive after what they basically started doing with me. I was like, my family and should not witness me being executed in a video, or whatever. I might as well, you know, do it myself. For me, that was the only thing. After that, they make sure i couldnt do that again, even i wanted to for a long time. , it was the fact that we were people together. Even though sometimes we hated each other more than anything goes we were sitting in a small room, that was the thing that kept us sane. Is the thing that helped us. The reason i try to take my own life, after two weeks in captivity, if i had been together with a person, that person mightve said, dont do that. Right away, i was very excited. All of completely lost the excitement inside myself. I felt so bad. I felt so ashamed about the we havei had, because this thing that we wanted to leave together. We had an idea that when we were going to be free, we would go to a hotel and eat everything from the buffet. We would have lunch. We would imagine how we would experience this together. Katty to the olympics. Date 11 delivering action. In gymnastics british athletes made their mark, but it was american gymnast simone biles, who picked up her fourth for a floor exercise. Chris mitchell is in rio. We said simone biles had a wobble, today, not so much. This was the event that she has dominated since 2013. She even has a move on the floor. That is what she was competing on. Biles. Alled the she executed it perfectly almost. It is a double backward somersault with the body fully extended, and the blind landing. It is difficult to describe. She makes it look easy to do. Aly raisman came in second. Note prize, no surprise. Amy tinkler got third place. Simone biles has 4 gold medals and one bronze. She is only 19. She has been doing gymnastics for 13 years. You have to say word for her coach who discovered her. She was adopted as a young child. Her life couldve gone in a different direction. It went in this direction. She will go to tokyo as the woman to beat. She was sensational. Just the one wobble on the beam cost or five gold medals, but 4 isnt bad. Katty i have been impressed, im sure you have been with team gb. Due to the performance and cycling. How have we done . Chris another fantastic night. Just behind me in the olympic park. British successful athlete winning her fourth gold. It is a double double for her. She won two in london, she want to hear. Won 2 here. Cycling events. She won by a mile. Characterry bubbly from a place near london in england. You would not believe it to look at her, but she is very small. On a bicycle, she is incredibly powerful and look some readable. She is watching her fiance, jason kenney, trying to get cold. Trying to get gold. That is delayed because a couple of riders made a technical infraction. There is great tension. Jason, trying to win his sixth olympic gold. Between the two of them, that would be 10 in one household. Imagine, 10 gold medals in one household. Katty amazing. I havent even gotten one in my household. Usain bolt was fabulous. The 200 meters, how will that look . Chris well, he only came 16th. Dont worry, it was 16th in the heat. He basically walked down the track. Easy. Es it look so he qualified 16th. The semifinals tomorrow. Justin gatlin goes through as well. The frenchman goes through. The real action starts tomorrow in the semifinals. At theon every day athletic stadium. The organizers got something right. Get bolt in there every day. Atty they did indeed from sports to politics. We have spent a lot of time talking about Donald Trumps words. We will look at his body language. A lot of us talk with our hands, but the republican nominee takes it to a new art form. An expert broke it down for us. Trump is a new york city creature, and new yorkers tend to use a lot of hand gestures. We all do. He is entertaining even if you dont buy a thing he is saying. I dont think he has been coached heavily on his body language. People pick on that in an instant. They pick up his authenticity. Mr. Trump we are going to take care of our veterans. It is a baseline an alternating i hand gesture with the lshape. It looks precise. Not wishywashy. He has got this nailed. Mr. Trump people are shocked, people are shocked. Uses this as cautionary could look out, this is a tough competitor. He will say we dont know what , is going to happen. Scares people. Whoa, hold him back. It is defensive. If you scare people and here is what we need to do, his prescription, youve got a good package. I am taking the gloves off. The nono is pointing at people. Pointing at people. In fact, clinton kind of backed off on that im talking about bill clinton and he started to do more of a pinch towards somebody, less accusatory. Mr. Trump done by obviously a government camera. Slicing means this is precision. We have got to do something about this. Mr. Trump they were trying to get me to hit the first ball. I dont want to hit anything. He gets people whipped up with his gestures. They can feel a sense of chaos. With his we dont have a plan that is his chaos, and then he follows it up with precision. Elect me and we will get to the bottom of this. Mr. Trump i want a gorgeous wall. Katty fabulous. What more can i say. Donald trump as you have never seen him before. Watch the hand gestures next time he is on the podium. Get the news on our website. The latest from rio is there. Thank you for watching, i will see you back here tomorrow.
