Its first appearance caught on camera by this man. At this very moment, the truck actually did not run over anybody yet there was a motorcyclist trying to approach, trying to open the door while driving. There were Police Opposition any here at the corner and they fired gunshots at the driver and so up until then, its a place. Andvehicle accelerated right into the middle of the crowd. Laura returning now to the reports of a military coup in turkey. A presenter and editor on turkish radio joins us now. Thank you for being with us on this very dramatic night. Does it feel there as though a military coup has happened . No, it is really interesting. Two hours ago, the Prime Minister spoke via telephone to calling it not a c oup but an uprising of some element in the military. 10 minutes ago, the president himself speaking via telephone and with a video connection on one of the private new channels, he used the term military coup attempt. He also said some elements in the military and the government will be able to overcome it. Incalled the citizens central areas of all the cities to resist this attack, what he calls it. Hasrestingly, the military taken the news channel. The military issued a statement saying they have taken control throughout the country. They are calling a curfew. About half an hour ago, that state channel went off the air, which is understandable because the government seems to be controlling some areas. A very confusing situation. Istanbul, some roads are blocked by military and some are blocked by police. In the next hours, it is understandable. Army, orents in the whatever, they are trying a coup attempt and we will see what happens. Laura one statement said the coup was in the name of secularism. Is that every action against president erdogan . Classicalt is a excuse by previous attempts. Similarly, we will see what is behind it. Thepresident himself blames military faction, the leader of since 1997, so for the past couple of years, this government has been hiding clear ly the sections of the government. That faction, the religious faction, preventist faction claims they have overtaken it which they call a parallel state. Himself mayident be behind this coup attempt. Hasa president erdogan urged people to take to the streets to protest. Have you seen any signs of this happening . I have not seen that. Some of the ministers speaking on dairy is tv channels have called civilians to attempt it. President is speaking now i can see him now. Thes repeating his call, civilians, thio resist this cou. He is calling the armys top generals to resist this coup. He is saying we will overcome this. He is now speaking as i am speaking to you. Laura thank you very much indeed for joining us live from turkey. For more, im joined by joshua. He used to work in the u. S. Embassy in ankara. Thank you for being with us. Just how surprised are you by what has happened by this attempted or even successful military coup in turkey . Joshua nothing in turkey surprises me now but i am surprise of the timing of this. In many ways, this was a 1990s turkey we are used to and having coups. This is still a problem. You spoke to a person is this a coup or attempt . It will see who will be coming on top. Laura erdogan spoke about this being a faction. How faction allies is the army . Joshua it is very polarized. What the caller as described is the in some ways have been broken down. If the reports are correct, that the top military leaders have been taken hostage, that has been in agreement before. This would be outside of the norm therefore it has the a lowerlevel. This is like the 1960s when the madeels envelope it. L laura can the foundation of a multisecular turkey the values . Joshua they are the defenders of the legacy. As the military has evolved, with the military go outside of its barracks in terms of something that many in the world would say is not legitimate, to overturn a process. I think that war we are seeing, the president on tv right now, it will be interesting to see because right now they have put out a statement but have not said very much. Showing thates are bridge over the bosphorus is now closed. It is symbolic of their role of the bridge between europe and asia, just how threatening is this for Global Security at this time . The fact that turkey is over a coup. Joshua i think it is more dangerous. All the airports are closed. The two bridges are closed. If there is instability were turkey have to focus inwardly, we cannot even talk about the places in syria, iraq, places where the entire World Community need stability. Laura what would it be a faction in the military so object to in the president and his government . Joshua they cannot beat him through the polls, they cannot be the president with the democratic ballot box so the only way is a slow and creeping authoritarianism. And saying we had to do this in the honor of our country. The statement that came out was classic 1990s. We have to figure out what this is all about. In turkey, nothing is ever as it seems. Laura the white house is monitoring the situation but how alarmed will they be inside the white house . Joshua the state department, white house, every connection is alarmed and spending the friday evenings into saturday up his on this question because of how important this is to turkey. There was a big conference next week. The Turkish Foreign minister is supposed to be year. Will be travel . Who will emerge as the legitimate government . laura turkeys military wants to be a Strong Partner in nato. Doesnt want to increase the fight against Islamic State . Doesnt have a call with the president tehre . Here . Joshua there are arguments you can make an say the Turkish Military during the cold war was actually america and the wests strongest ally. Before we can get to the arguments, we have to focus on our principles. Unfortunately, coups have been principles in the middle east. For discussion between the bridge we have talked about from asia to europe, will be treated like another middle eastern country or the democracy . This happened in the western part of europe. How will will respond. Laura he has called on people to protest against the attempts. How popular is the president . Would you expect he will be listened to . Joshua this could get ugly very quickly. His supporters in certain pockets of the city, not just in istanbul but in anaka will try to resistra civil arrest. If there is a mutiny within the ranks, this will make it even more difficult how the president or the military attempt will be successful and a lot of lives will be lost. Laura how much is at stake here . Joshua i think this is the most critical moment of the last decade for turkish democracy and where we are in the global scale of the countries that are on the brink. Countries we thought we are were on our side and always with us. This is a turning point and a very significant one. We talked about the brexit. This is a another moment like that that europe will have to face and the committee has to face together. Laura this must be very upsetting. Joshua it is. It brings back bad memories in terms of that. A number of terrorist attacks that have been hitting turkey day after day will be important. Laura thank you for joining us. That brings todays broadcast of a close.
