Official released the transcripts of emergency cault he made while carrying out the attack. A shake up in Donald Trumps email. The controversial manager of his campaign is south amid talk of infighting. Nd taking a walkon the wild side with photographer danny lyon. A show highlights some of his iconic shots. Welcome to our views on Public Television in america and around the globe. It has been just over a week now since the gunman entered an orlando nightclub and killed 49 people. Today people released trap scripts of the 911 calls he mad during the attack. In the phone logs, he pledges awe allegiance to Islamic State and its leader. But the investigation into this crime continues. The bbcs reporter reports. As orlando continues to come together in its grief, more information is coming to light about the horrific events that led to so much loss of life at the pulse nightclub. The night of the attack, it is now known police were negotiating for nearly half an hour over three different phone calls that with the killer. The f. B. I. Has released partial transcripts of those calls mean identifies himself as an islamic soldier, saying america had to stop bombing iraq and syria. At one point he says he has a suicide vest and threatened to blow up a vehicle outside the club if anyone did anything stupid. But no such explosives were found. While we are not releasing the audio, what i can tell you is while the killer made these statements, he did so in a chilling, calm and deliberate manner. The f. B. I. Says it is still looking into the motives of the killer, including issues surrounding his mental health, his own Sexual Orientation and the means by which he may have al radicalized. Efforts in the senate for better gun control. The first votes on the issues are due in the coming hours, but getting agreement and effective solution for that and the 0 other debates thrown up by this attack are not going to be easy. A short time ago, i spoke to the bbcs reporter who was on the ground in orlando shortly after the shootings happened and covered the aftermath. You are very close though this story and have spoken to many of the families affected. What kind of insight did these transcripts give you into the meantime of omar mateen . Some of this we did know. For example, we know from eyewitness reports and even what the police said at the time is that the first shots were fired at pulse nightclub shortly after 2 00 a. M. We had heard reports as well that omar mateen had called emergency services. He dialed 911 shortly afterwards. We know now in these transcripts that at about 2 35 he contacted an operator. He dialed from inside pulse nightclub and had a call that lasted about 50 seconds. What is so interesting is what happened after that. At 2 48 a. M. , he engage inside three different phone calls with crisis negotiators from orlando police, one call lasting 16 minutes. As we saw in that report, during that call he described himself as an islamic soldier. He said that he had explosives on him. He said there were explosives in a vehicle outside the nightclub, but also on him and said he had explosives like the kind they used in flans. Interestingly he said in the next few days aring doctor you are going to see more of this type of action going on. Shortly after that he hung up and multiple attempts to get hold of him failed. The f. B. I. First of all released the edited version of the transcripts and then the full ones. Why the controversy . Initially they decided to release partial transcripts they said out of respect to the families and victims. They said in the initial transcripts as we saw, they had with held the name of the gunman, omar mateen, and also the fact that he has pledged allegiance to Islamic State. Hat did cause a bit of a political controversy, the speaker of the house saying that was preposterous. They said they did not want to provide a platform for extremists. But i think after that political stir it caused, they then decided to release the redacted verses. At the end of the day, it is worth noting that 49 people lost their lives in that gay nightclub. That is what we should remember. Thank you for joining also. It was another wild day in Donald Trumps bid for the whitehouse as he fired his Controversial Campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski. Just two months ack, mr. Trump stood by lewandowski as he faced battery charges for forcefully grabbing a female reporter. Key exit from the campaign mean trump may be striking a new one heading into the general election . I spoke with a correspondent a short time ago. First of all, Corey Lewandowski maintains he doesnt know why he was fired. Perhaps you can tell us why . It is a very disastrous few weeks for the donald trump campaign, first over the , to his a judge disappointing response to the orlando shooting. Instead of saying perhaps this is a problem of National Security or saying actual policy, he said i was right. He has had a terrible few weeks in the press, and so he has decided to shake things up and by doing so, he said he is going to fire Corey Lewandowski. Corey lewandowski said i havent actually been in control of the came pain since april 8. That is when paul came in. But what difference is it really going to make to the campaign when it is so based on his donald trump and his outsized personality . That is really true. Every time his Campaign Staffers have said he is going to get mature, going to be president ial, and he gives a couple of speeches on a teleprompter, and almost immediately within two or three days, he has reduced himself back to hurling insults. It is him standing up there at a podium, nobody telling him to say these things. He really has to show that he is capable of making this turn and being a disciplined candidate. How much is this is reasuring nervous republicans just a month awhat from the Republican Convention . Absolutely. As he has become more unstable, as he is lunching there gaffe to gaffe, a lot of reps are saying he is not capable of being our nominee, and we need to think about replacing him. Three or four weeks ago when he locked down the nomination is now being called into question by people saying he is not going to cut it apparently Donald Trumps children were influential in this. What does that tell us . His daughter basically runs his businesses at this point. She was the Real Driving Force behind the firing of Corey Lewandowski. I am told it was because he and her husband did not get along very well. It does show he is very influenced by his daughter and family. For all these comments he makes about women, every woman points to ivanka saying he really does empower women and that speaks to it. This is something. Every day we are talking about turmoil in Donald Trumps campaign and talking about what a mess of a candidate he is and represent infighting is a great day for hillary clinton. Thank you. The latest on the twists and turns of the trump campaign. Tonight we are learning that a man arrested over the weekend trying to wrestle a gun from a Police Officer at a donald trump rally in las vegas said he wanted to shoot the candidate to death. Charged with d is violence on restricted grounds. This thursday, british voters will go to the polls with a major decision to make. Should she stay in the european or vote to leave . It has been a highly charged campaign on both sides. Warnings on the con cowenses of everything from the economy to National Security. Our correspondent joineded me a short time ago. This is a momentous week for the United Kingdom. What are the closing arguments that voters are hearing in the last days thfer campaign . Well, i think it is fair to say this is a huge group of people go past me here, it is fair to say that the close are arguments of the two come pains are similar to the arguments they have been making all all. Vote leave feels they have struck a rich vein with their slogan take back control, and they are repeating it time and time ago. They believe that enough people here in the u. K. Feel that too much sovereignty has been eroded, too much power has gone from westminster to brussels, they are persuaded that to leave would be per two them. David cameron is not officially leading it, but he continues to push the economic argument. Today we had sir richard branson, bosses from hungary car firms here in the u. K. , all making the point the Prime Minister has been making, to leave the european, this huge Single Market and trading pollock would be det mental to the u. K. Economy. Those are the two points. Both believe they resonate and both are pushing hard right up until wednesday night. You are there in scotland. What impact would a vote to leave the e. U. Have on the United Kingdom itself . Would it stay united . Well, this is a point. We have had major warnings from the remain campaign. A brecksit vote would endanger the United Kingdom. Let me sketch out a possible scenario here, one in which the majority of scots vote to remain in the european, but the u. K. Votes to leave. Many beam believe that would create such a tension betwee the will of the scottish nation and the decision of the u. K. As further at a independence referendum would have to be called. We had onetwo years ago. If that happened and there was a vote out, suddenly you end up with an independent scotland, and the u. K. Changes fundamentally. But, and heres the big twist, the first minister here in scotland, leader of the s. N. P. , the Scottish National party, is urging voters to remain and to stay in the european union. Put simply, she believes that scotland needs to be in the union needs nd the to be there. Thank you. This weeks vote is obviously going to be a widespread impact. In Northern Ireland, the debate is focusing on whether a lead vote can affect the economy. This report from chris paige contains flash photography. The border between Northern Ireland and the republic of ireland winds waits way through lakes rivers, fields and forests. If you drive across it, you may miss it there are no bare yes, sir, no customs, no passport checks. Many businesses trade across the frontier. This furniture manufacturer is on the u. K. Side of the border but has lots of customers in the republic of ireland. They think that may change. From a business point of view, i think it will be a disaster along the border. I can remember when we started business here, and it was basically farms. You had duty to pay. But not all Business People think that way. The owner of this restaurant says the e. U. Has caused damage. It is firmly for big business, big banks and big politicians, and the small to mediumsized businesses have been stifled by over regulation. The frontier nearby used to go one of the most contention in the world. A conflict known as the troubles lasted for three decades over whether Northern Ireland should become part of the republic of ireland. There was a Peace Agreement in 1998, and since then the capital city, belfast has been transformed. Funding from the e. U. Has helped to pay for landmark new buildings, improvements to the transport network and projects to encourage reconciliation. Although Northern Ireland is in the u. K. , belfast has responsibility for most government affairs. The first minister thinks Northern Ireland would be better off outside the e. U. We could strike our own strayed agreements. When we go to do trade deals with china and the middle east, e are constrained by the urine regulations. This would free us up to do more deals in the middle east and the far east as well. She is a unionist who wants to maintain Northern Irelands union with u. K. Her partner is in ireland. He is campaign for the u. K. To remain in the e. U. For us to see a situation where effectively the island of ireland is divided in such a dramatic way visavis the north effectively being tied up to english and scotland ways and an exit decision, against a back drop of the republic being in europe. It creates many barriers. Very few people think the peace here would be in danger if the u. K. Came out of europe. But the results will affect Northern Ireland more than most places because it is right next door to another e. U. State, which lies just across the u. K. Only on land border. Bbc news. But friends and critics described him as a chameleon for his ability to change himself for every role. He was a very terrific actor, very vum initial and intelligent. When i interviewed him a few years ago i found him such an interesting guy to speak to, very committed to his craft. He also starred in one of jody fosters movies. She said today he was a serious thinker. He was also fun, a rare and beautiful soul. 2015 had the dubious distinction of being the most dangerous year on record for environmental defenders around the world. That is the conclusion of a new report by the Campaign Group global witness. Among the countries singled out was brazil, where 50 people have been killed for protecting land from illegal loggers. Here is our report. Brazils indigenous tribes are as diverse as they are numerous. The one thing they have in common today perhaps above all else is a rehadntless insatiable pressure on relent let, insatiable pressure on their land and resourceles. The people are fewer than 2,000 in number. The jungle it their home, their source of food, and they have minimal contact with modern brazil. But their lives and lands are under constant threat. There is our land, and we will fight to defend it says the village chief as the Tribal Council meets to discuss the latest threat. Since 2008, six leaders have been killed for trying to protect their land from illegal loggers and miners. They are maintaining a traditional way of life, living in and off the forest is what their existence is all about. They are prepared to defend it. But it puts them in direct conflict with others from the outside who want access to the resources. More than 5,000 square kilometers of the amazon rain forest is lost each year. 80 of that is thought to be illegally cut and exported timber. Brazil agencies are fighting back, but they are often up against powerful and corrupt business interests. We are facing a situation of organized crime, well structured and supported by people with money, using poor people to do their dirty work. A new report says at least 50 environmental defenders, sfwidge us in leaders and rural campaigners were murdered in brazil a lone last year. The perpetrators are rarely if ever caught. The man who shot her husband have certainly never been arrested, although she says everyone knows who they are. A broken cross mark marks where he fell, the family having since fled their home and their land. My life has no value now, nothing. My husband was threatened day and night, but refused to leave this land. I wanded to stay where he died. My son wouldnt let me. While threats and intimidation have forced some communities to give up the struggle, it is not an option for the kapur. Small in number with their own language and traditions. This is more than a fight for their land. It is a fight for their survival. Bbc news, the amazon. Killed for standing up for their way of life. Now over the course of half a century, photography, writer and film maker danny lyon has captured the civil rights movement, motor bike gangs and the harsh texas prison system. His journalism has been compared to tom wolfe and truman about capote. Now a represent speculative has opened at the Whitney Museum in museum. Michael has gone to meet the man behind the lens. A woman who i knew said we saw your pictures. We thought you were a biker who ot arrested and put in prison. And people often said to me they met me and said we thought you were a black guy, and that was a great compliment. And many years later i met angel franco, a latino who works for the times. He said you are the only photography who takes pictures of us as people. That was one of the greatest compliments that i ever received. I think the idea of me being a political photography or activist, i think that is overrated and can be misleading and bothers me. Any artist, writer, whoever they are, people are engaged in the times they live in. I think you should be. So there is a side to me that is there. But if you want to send a message, go to western union. Meaning if you are using a film to send a message, you are probably making a very bad film. I was a serial photographer so. Once i got into a project, then it fed on itself, and i was busy. But when it was done, it was like ok, what am i going to do now . This guy was working on my motorcycle in the shop. I said do you know any motorcycle clubs . I want to photographer one. He said i am a member of the chicago outlaws. Why dont you come to a meeting . I go to the meeting, and one of them said why dont you join the club . And i did. E know, many years ago, you know, many years ago, there was a museum in aspen. She said did you join the outlaws for the adventure and excitement. I was so insulted by this question. That is outrageous. I was a journalist. Of course i joined it for my pure, higher elitist journalist reasons. But the older i have gotten, i have begun thinking that is baloney. That was one of the happiest experiences of my life. Did i that because i loved it. I have loved everything i have done. The world seen by danny lyon. Now at the Whitney Museum in new york. That brings todays broadcast to a close.
