Im a sick woman, dying possibly. The lady in the van, rated pg13, opens new york and l. A. January 15. And now, bbc world news america. Katty 10 u. S. Sages captured by iran are now released, bringing a swift end to the situation with countries were eager to resolve 10 u. S. Sailors. And why denmarks proposal to seize valuables from immigrants is causing such concern. And dreaming of winning the ticket what would you do with 1. 5 billion dollars . Americans playing powerball hope get the chance to find out hope they get the chance to find out. Welcome to our viewers on Public Television here in america and also around the globe. U. S. Secretary of state john kerry has thanked iran for the Quick Release of 10 u. S. Sailors who were captured after straying into iranian waters. The speedy resolution of earth a potential diplomatic crisis, just days before the nuclear deal between tehran and world powers is due to be implemented. Our Diplomatic Correspondent has more. James a drama neither side wanted to turn into a crisis the 10 u. S. Sailors were detained by iranians after one of their vessels apparently broke down and drifted into irans waters in the gulf. Although this all played out on Iranian Television with the american weapons put on display, both sides were also working the phones to try to find a way out. The state Department Says john kerry spoke with his iranian counterpart at least five times overhe course of 10 hours. They agreed the Quick Release which followed could be a good story for both sides. Thank thewant to iranian authorities for their cooperation and quick response. These are always situations, which is everybody here knows, have an ability if not properly guided, to get out of control. James the american sailors were apparently well treated, and one of them made an apology. It was a mistake that was our fault, and we apologize for our mistake. James the iranians accepted that. Neither side seemed to lose faith. We have concluded that the passage of americans in our territory was not a hostage hostile passage of espionage. It was due to the error in their navigational system. James what a difference a decade makes. In 2007, 15 british sailors and marines were seized for weeks. Then president ahmad extracted confessions and propaganda. Bad relations got worse. There was a time when iran regularly took hostages, most spectacularly just after the Islamic Revolution in 1979. More than 60 americans were seized at the embassy in tehran. The United States was the great satan, and the street chants were death to america. Finally, iran, the United States, and key world powers reached an historic agreement. Iranians celebrate at the prospect of sanctions crippling their economy being lifted. That can now happen within days, allowing irans oil well to flow again, reopening the country to global business. None of this means tensions between washington and tehran are over. The formidable u. S. Presence in the gulf will remain. The white house repeated it is still concerned about what it calls iranian sponsorship of the two countries back opposing sides in the syrian war, but for u. S. Sailors at least, it is not so much free at last as free so soon. Katty is all of this a sign that iran really is changing . I spoke with the former special assistant to president obama. Are you surprised at the speed incident in the gulf has been resolved. Dennis not really. The only reason i say that is because the iranians have about 100 billion worth of reasons to resolve this quickly. They have sanctions relief coming soon, which means they gave access they gain access to all these frozen accounts. If they help these sailors, i think that would put that at risk. If they already had the sanctions relief, my answer would be different, particularly because the interplay of forces within iran affect the revolutionary guard have often done these kind of things and without the guidance from the central government, and things would be more complicated in a circumstance where there was not a very strong incentive for iranians to be sure they did not have a problem before they get sanctions relief. Atty it does seem there was different tone, different approach, different willingness to cooperate than in 2007 when the british sailors were held for almost two weeks. Dennis theres no question about that. One, there is a communication not havehat we did before. The british have that because they had an embassy at the time. The one big difference is they have a stake right now in resolving this, and in 2007, its not clear what the steak was. Katty you seem to be suggesting that in a couple of weeks time, diminished. Ould be dennis very possibly. We have an interesting indicator of what the real balance of power is with what happens in the elections for parliament, but even more to the point, i would say does the Guidance Council permit those who represent more of a pragmatic point of view, those who might identify more with iran, will they be allowed to be candidates . That may be a better indicator than the results of the elections. Katty you think it is premature to say that the speed with which this particular incident was resolved and the way in which the iranians handled it it is too early, you think, to say this shows that there are possibilities there have not been before . That is the think case. Clearly something is different, that is for sure, but before we draw strong and more definitive conclusions about what this tells us, i think we need to see how they will behave in a few weeks time. Once they have had sanctions relief and ask frozen accounts, then we will see. Katty the threat of sanctions being opposed again is not the threat of sanctions being imposed again . Dennis once they have access to the accounts, they have access to the accounts. Expect it to be really very different let me put it this way i do not think they are going to shape in a demonstrable way that would put sanctions relief at risk because they could be reimposed. I do think the likelihood of them cheating along the margins is very high for no other reason than just to test the verification. Two french schoolchildren and a ukrainian skier have been killed. One man thought to be a teacher from the group, is seriously injured and being treated in hospital. France asd in eastern our correspondent reports. In the crook of this alpine mountain, the chilling lineup of disaster. Mountain rescuers and Police Bright against the snow. Buried inside it, 19 pschoolchildren and their teachers. The avalanche came an hour or so before dusk, 300 meters of it, a frozen slab of snow sent sliding down towards them by high winds. Asswept the teenagers away they tackled the tricky slope. Two were later found dead along with a loan ukrainian skier, one of the teachers seriously injured. Were notpils who caught up in the avalanche contacted us immediately and confirmed no one in the group had an avalanche detector. Traveledhool party had from the outs. The slope where the children lay buried had been closed all season. Weather conditions had apparently left it too dangerous to ski. No one predicted disaster, but with several other skiers already killed this month by avalanches, the question is if someone should have. Obviously, people going down there anyway. All of my colleagues are that devastated and shocked. The government has already warned of a high risk of avalanches. The outs are notorious for them. Katty lawmakers in denmark began deliberations on controversial immigration measures that include seizing assets from asylumseekers. They would then be used to pay housing and health care costs. It is part of a broader plan by the government to get tougher on immigration, but these proposals have then condemned by the United Nations and human rights , as our correspondent reports from copenhagen. Reporter denmark does not exactly welcome migrants. Its government would rather they stayed away, but over 20,000 people sought asylum here last year. More are expected. This, the centerright ruling s latest and most controversial attempt to deter them. They planned to confiscate cash and valuables worth more than 1000 pounds from asylumseekers. If i needed social benefits, i would have to sell my car or sell all my valuables to get social benefits, and if i as a dane have to do that in order to get social benefits, i think it is most fair that the same rules are for people coming to denmark. Not everyone agrees. It is not yet clear how and where assets would be seized. Wedding rings and items of sentimental value are exempt. Its dehumanizing in many ways. It seems like the intention of this bill, ransacking people, looking over them for jewelry, just is meant to send a signal to refugees to go somewhere else. These refugees told us they arrived from syria, iraq, afghanistan with little money and few possessions. We are here because we have many problems in our country. Denmark is overhauling its immigration law. There are those who believe the plan is unworkable, cosmetic. Its like they take everything. They dont have anything, and they take those small things which they do have. We have to treat asylumseekers like we treat our fellow danes on every aspect. We also have to require them to spend a fortune. Reporter the United Nations are clear they won the plan could fuel fear and xenophobia. The plan denmark toss problem is that it lies between the European Countries which have in most welcoming to refugees, but sweden has now all but sweden has now all the closed its border, and germany after the cologne sex attacks, is toughening laws on deportation. Theres a sense that across europe, attitudes toward migrants are hardening and governments are having to follow suit. What denmarks Prime Minister describes as misunderstood legislation could be implemented as soon as march. Deal with to immigration a big question in europe at the moment. Last night, president obama gave his last state of the union address, talking optimistically about his administrations achievements and his aims for his final year in office, but several may have been distracted, busy perhaps picturing themselves at that podium next year. Election campaign, we have talked a lot about the contentious race on the republican side, but the democratic contest is getting a lot tighter, too, in those early voting stages states of iowa and New Hampshire. Polls show senator Bernie Sanders pulling ahead of Hillary Clinton. Think a lot of the world has been watching donald trump and ted cruz and the republican race, but they have probably forgotten there is a democratic race at all. Is there one now . Philip there is. I would not have put it past people to have ignored it for a wild. Hillary clinton so far ahead that most people assumed it would be easy for her, which is the same thing that happened in 2008 as well. At this point, she is basically running neck and neck with Bernie Sanders in the first two states. Both are happy to have a fairly close because it energizes their supporters and donors, but hillary would probably still rather it be three months ago when she was up by a mile. Katty does this mean we have the prospect of senator Bernie Sanders actually being the democratic nominee for the u. S. Presidency . Would you think that is a viable proposition . Philip i think it is a viable proposition. It is hard to say whats going to happen. I do not think it is terribly likely. One of the things about iowa and New Hampshire as they are both very white states and Bernie Sanders has done much worse with nonwhite voters. She is of a large amount in south carolina, which is also an early state which has a Large Population of nonwhite voters. He is not barack obama. He is not as compelling and will not be making history in the way barack obama did. His path to presidency is not as clear to see as was obamas eight years ago. Mentioned the 2008 raise a couple of times. What has Hillary Clinton learned from the experience . Watching her on the campaign trail, do you think she is stronger or worse or better or whatever it is candidate . She has actually gotten better over the course of this campaign, too. When she started out, she was very withdrawn and did not seem to get out very much. She still does not get out to talk to the press very much, but she seems to be getting out more and talking more than she was. Of course, it is also closer to election day. Other than that, there are a lot of parallels between this and 2008. It is hard for candidates to change who they are on the campaign trail just as it is hard for them to change who they are in general. She is running a similar sort of campaign as she ran in 2008. I think her opponent this time is weaker, which is advantageous for her. Katty are there very big policy differences . Lip that is interesting Hillary Clinton has started to espouse more liberal policies than she has in the past, which was seen as her trying to prevent Bernie Sanders from sucking up that entire left side of the democratic party. Regardless, he is still doing very well with liberals. There are some policy differences. She likes to point out the differences on guns and Bernie Sanders background in voting on guns. Other than that, the real debates. E you see in the ever exciting American Election race. This was ago, cuttingedge special effects. Now, when theater is bringing it back for another run. At least 15 people have been polio outside a Vaccination Center in southwest pakistan after a suicide bomber blew himself up. The victims of the attack were guarding those working at the clinic. Militant groups say the campaign as a cover for western spies. Shannon the bombing happened during morning hours. Most of those killed were policemen protecting the clinic. It was the third day of a Polio Vaccination Campaign aimed mainly at the countrys tribal areas and religious province. The wounded were rushed to a local hospital, many still in shock as doctors scrambled to help them. This was supposed to be a day about protecting children from a paralyzing disease. Instead, it became another brutal reminder of the violence these campaigns face. Polio workers have been targeted regularly in the past few years by islamist militants who oppose faxon nation and claim it is a by the west. Todays blast shows those working on polio campaigns and those protecting them are still at risk. The official response was defiant. We want to assure the people will notpolio Campaign Stop and will go ahead without any interruption. We will add more resources to boost the campaign. Shannon as the campaign continues, questions will again be asked about the safety of those who do what remains one of the most dangerous jobs in pakistan. Katty go to any movie or production these days, and special effects are, of course, the star of the show, but 250 years ago, creating thunder for one of the most famous scenes in wasespeares king lear quite the undertaking. They resulted using cannonballs, but now the contraption is being dusted off and brought back. A very modern production of sleeping beauty, but hidden in the roof, a reminder of old things passed. To mark the building cost 250th birthday, David Wilmore has restored a piece of theatrical history. The thunder room, this is actually it. This is the great peace of sound technology in the 18th century. They might not look much, but these channels may georgian audiences below gasped and a solid schmidt. Heavy balls would be rolled along them to make the reader goers feel like they really were in a thunderstorm or battle. Imagine somebody who has never seen hdtv or digital sound. This is coming into another world for them. It is a place of escapism. Now for the first time in living memory, the thunder run is going to rumble again. I have been waiting a very long time for this. Should we actually release the balls . Absolutely. Lets do it. Are we ready down below . How was that . That was pretty good. Pretty good. I am quite pleased, i must say. You can feel it in your whole body. The whole thing rumbles and reverberates. Thats very good, isnt it . It takes us back to that intimacy, to what theater was like. This theater now is fully equipped with the very latest technology, but we need to remember that in 1766, this was the latest technology, and everyones in a while, its great to get a sense of what it was like. Lets hear it again. Tom was so impressed hes going to use this thunder run for a production of kingly or later this year, and its not the only special effect he is bringing back for the theater cost 250th anniversary. This is a wind machine. Tom has got the rain machine. The heavens will open. Theaters perfect storm. Katty i love it. For theirlining up chance at a 1. 5 billion jackpot. The powerball drawing shattering previous records and lead to office pools and longer than normal lunch breaks to go and buy tickets, never mind that the odds of winning stand at one in 292 million. On a frigid winters morning, new yorkers arrived or work wishing for a lifetime in the sun, so in the midst of rush hour, qs for the powerball lottery. Confident of winning . You never know. Is a heck of a lot of money for people. I would probably be somewhere close to costa rica right now. No, i would not. The 1. 5 billion jackpot is so large that for players like holdinghe has given a new meaning to the american dream. Powerball fever is highly contagious. In california, people queued for three hours to buy their tickets, but the probability of winning is one in 290 2 million, which is akin to tossing a coin and seeing it come up heads 28 times in a row. These restaurant workers in new jersey thought they won the powerball last that are day, but it was a heartbreaking case of right numbers, wrong draw. Litigation, the lottery has urged people taking part in office pools to sign written contract to avoid legal disputes afterwards about how the jackpot should be shared. No one has won the chat pot november. That is why it is so big, but someone could wake up in the morning a billionaire. For everyone else, it will be just another day and just another dollar.
