A Community Moorings the loss of nine people shot on a College Campus. President obama makes a plea for gun control. Is capitalism broken . The author will explain what is worth saving. Welcome to our viewers on Public Television in america and also around the globe. Russia has spent a third day carrying out bombing raids in syria. Moscow says its warplanes carried out multiple strikes launching six at Islamic State targets. The members of the Usled Coalition renewed their criticism of russia, charging they are hitting areas where there is no i. S. Presents and demanding they cease immediately. It came as president putin was in paris attending a summit on ukraine. John simpson starts our coverage. A morning you may find some of the images disturbing. Wa warning. John this was to be Vladimir Putins day, having wrongfooted the western countries over ukraine, he is now a doing the same thing over syria. When president hollande welcomed him to today some todays summit. Ukraineskel and president had gathered to talk about russias involvement in the chaos of Eastern Ukraine and how to calm the situation down. But mr. Putin has decided to go easy over ukraine. He has got other concerns. Inused to seeing america british cockpit videos. This one is from a russian jet. The target . Amateur video filmed on the ground is said to show the russians had not been concentrating on Islamic State, as attacking much groups trained and armed by the americans. Mr. Putin has his own agenda. He wants to protect the syrian president bashar alassad. Unverifiedres also are said to show the aftermath by one attack by mr. Assads forces on the outskirts of damascus. The russians have been accused in a joint western Statement Today of bombing civilians rather than concentrating on Islamic State. President obama regardless of what mr. Putin said, he does not distinguish between isil and a moderate sunni opposition that wants to see assad go. From their perspective, they are all terrorists, and that is a recipe for disaster. John David Cameron seemed a lot more guarded. David cameron the u. S. Are saying this is indiscriminate striking. We need to examine. We need to examine very carefully the evidence for what has happened. I believe looking at the evidence first and making a comment afterward. There wasr the summit the same apparent reluctance to condemn russia to strongly. Angela merkel and france while hollande talked about the need for russia to concentrate on attacking Islamic State, but the german leader also stressed that any solution to the syrian problem had to involve russia. It had to be music to mr. Putin s ears. Any agreement on syria . John he left pretending not to hear questions about the bombing of syria. To him, it had been a fairly good day. So, the really important subjet at the ukraine summit turned out to be syria. Why . Well, because president Vladimir Putin wanted it that way. Hard to avoid the conclusion that he was the dominant figure here. The strikeson russia is waging in syria, i spoke with admiral james to free this her formerly served as supreme allied commander at nato and is now the dean of the Fletcher School at tufts university. He joins us from boston. Thanks very much for joining us. How harmful to you think this russian interventionist to the u. S. Strategy in syria . Its roughly like pouring fuel on a burning fire. Fanning thejust flames. This is adding real fuel. And i think this is going to add a minimum prolong this conflict and possibly could lead to the entire breakup of syria. Isthis chaos continues, this utterly unhelpful what is happening now. How do you actually stop this . President obama can say stop to Vladimir Putin, but past history shows he does not listen. I think this is going to become part of the discussion tied with the sanctions in ukraine. In somewhat, i think putin feels as though by taking on this counter Islamic State campaign eh can ingratiate himself with the west and have the sanctions removed on ukraine. We cannot let that occur. We have got to keep that lover of pressure on. Secondly, the u. S. Needs to step up into a more direct leadership role. Granted, we want to take on Islamic State as priority one, but we should not fall off our stated goal of removing assad. That is going to. Mean some tough negotiation with russians overtime the closest thing to this is probably the balkans back in the 1990s. Way totely, we found our a solution, but it is going to take some tough negotiation and some real combat hit it has been more than year since the coalition began strikes in syria and iraq. What is the next step then . I think first and foremost, we need to put more capability, military capability in the hands of the kurds in the northeastern part of syria. Dish state area itself. That provides pressure coming down from the north. The Bombing Campaign is working in the west. We need to redouble our efforts with the Iraqi Security forces to put pressure from the south. If we put Islamic State under three axis pressure we will see they are not 10 feet tall. Thanks very much for joining us. It is a pleasure. Information, more is coming tonight about the gun man who shot dead nine people at a Community College on thursday. Mercer hadd chris six guns on him at the time. And seven more found at his home. Mercer appeared to be targeting christians. Here is our north american correspondent james cook. The unitedagain, states have settled into a from mill your ritual. This massacre like so many before it has its own rhythm. Horror, grief and anger. What is missing is any sense of surprise. Even those trained to deal with death have found it tough. In these mass casualty situations, it bothers me when i get home. I mean, i got home and cried. Doesnt make sense to me. James this was the killer in a shootout with police. 26yearold chris harpermercer posing with a gun. He lives near the school but he was and appears to have supported the ira. At home in california, his bereaved father seems stunned. Anything to say . I do not want to answer any questions right now. It has been a devastating day. Devastating for me and my family. James a horror of what happened here at umpqua Community College is becoming clear. Active shooter. 1140 college road. James the killer is reported to have asked for any christians to stand up before telling them they were about to meet god and shooting them dead. No one knew for sure what is going on. The next thing you know we hear three or four more gunshots. And everybody just looked at each other and we knew. We knew something was going on. This is real. James there were heroes. The family of 30yearold chrismans says he was shot seven times as he tried to stop the gunman and survived. He locked the door to keep from gun man from coming in. Hes shot three times, hits the floor. Looks up at the gunman and says gets shot two more times. This little town is the latest the bear the scars of a mass shooting in a nation weary with sorrow. Well, in a recent interview with the bbc, president obama described his inability to strengthen gun laws as his biggest failure in office. And he did little to disguise his anger at the latest strategy. Here is jon sopel. N bullied or not, this is training that teachers are being given as a gun man burst into their gun believe it or not. The progun lobby is one that teaches so they can fight back with rounds of ammunition not tennis balls. But that is not the way in exasperated, angry, but ultimately powerless president sees it. Thatdent obama we know other countries in response to one mass shooting have been able to craft laws that almost eliminate mass shootings. Friends of ours, allies of ours. Great britain. Australia. Countries like ours. John in his statement he referred to an interview he gave vent towhreere he gave his feelings. The one areama where i feel i have been most frustrated and most stymied it the united fact states of america is the one advanced nation on earth in which we to not have sufficient common sense gun safety laws. John why . After the sandy hook shooting and december 2012, even modest gun control measures proposed by the president were voted down by congress, despite the public apparently backing them. Step forward the National Rifle association. It gives the money to many congressmen and women and ranks them and how solid they are on the issue. The nra opposes virtually any limitation at all on any type of firearm. Members of Congress Really are often fearful of getting a low score by the nra. Issue,he nra weighs an when they say this is an issue important to them, it tends to concentrate the mind of a majority of congress. John there has been a regular mass shooting since barack obama became president , of her session you expect to end anytime soon. And even in the unlikely event the gun laws are changed, they would almost certainly be challenged in the supreme court. The right to bear arms and seems the one unchangeable fact of american life. Irrespective of the cost. Economy today. Hiring slowed sharply in september. But according to former labor secretary robert writes, the problems go much deeper. For decades, the system has been skewed towards the wrist the rich. He makes his case in his new book saving capitalism. Thanks for joining us. Your book is about saving capitalism. What you think has broken in the first place . Reich it is not just the economy in the United States. It is the politics that goes along with the economy. As wealth and income concentrates at the top, the people at the top have more political power to make the system work for them and not for average working people. Who are you blaming . The people at the top, politicians and big banks . Reich it is not just politicians and big banks, it is everybody else giving up on politics. If they give up on politics, they give up on democracy and big cede control to the banks and the politicians who are not working for them but are working for big corporations. So, if everyone is to blame, how can everyone fix what you say is broken . The purpose is to help people see that the old divides are ideological between free market and government have no significance. There is a possibility for people on the left and the right to come together in common cause. What is one of the Biggest Challenges you think, or one of the things that need to be worked on . You mentioned income inequality. Is that the biggest . Robert reisch it is getting worse in almost every rich country. It is also insecurity. Job insecurity is rampant. Stagnant low wages, wages in the United States and other countries. Persistence ofhe poverty, despite the fact our economies are growing. It is also how to assimilate others, immigrants. All of these are interrelated, and all of them depend upon making the politicaleconomic system. Notice i said politicaleconomic system worked for the many. You have worked in government yourself. Is there enough of the political will to actually get things done . Robert reisch there isnt now. What we see in United States we may see a little bit in britain and elsewhere is a wellspring of populism, people saying, we have had it. We dont want business as usual. We want something that is much more responsive to us. You say there is not right now. Areeyou saying president obama has not done enough . Robert rice no president can do it on his or her own. You need not only your legislature or your parliaments, but also need the public behind you to push all of this. Inpresident s very often say, america and i think prime ministers also say, i cannot do it alone. I cannot do it if the public is not mobilized and organized to help me do it. Do you think in america, a nation which has huge aspirational value in its culture, do you think people are prepared to give something up to help the greater good . Robert reisch absolutely. We did it between 1901 and 1916, the progressive era. We did in the 1930s after the great depression. We did in the 1960s in terms of civil rights, equal rights. This country has an ability to put ideology aside when they understand the nature of a problem. Sleeves andtheir get on with what has to be done. I think we will. The question is one.
