A fierce battle for the afghan city where the tally with a taller than where the taliban have raised their flag with a show of force. President obama promises all possible means to defeat isis. Flying high in south africa. In one of the poorest areas of johannesburg, trampolines are making a huge difference. Welcome to our viewers on public publicion on television in america and around the world. This site of a fierce battle after Taliban Forces took control on monday. Now, local troops are trying to take back take it back with heavy fighting on the ground. It is the first provincial capital to be seized by the taliban after they lost power in 2001. This current show of force is raising alarms. The bbcs World Affairs editor reports. With the taliban captured the city yesterday evening it was a huge shock. The biggest victory they have scored since they were chased out of afghanistan 14 years ago. Nduz tellsess in ku the bbc he was prevented from leaving. There are too many inside the city. People trying to leave the city, but the highways are impossible. It has been exactly one year since the president was elected, which is why the taliban with their shrewd pr sense has done this attack. He promised to retake kunduz but said it was not be easy. The problem, he says, is that the enemy has use civilians as human shields. This is the talibans new leader. He is actually a supporter of peace talks. Yet, even so, under him the taliban has been more effective. The worrying thing about all of this is how far across the top of afghanistan the taliban stretches. They have been fighting in their traditional strongholds and elsewhere in the south for years, but in the city of kunduz and the surrounding kunduz province, they are far away from the original taliban support centers. Now that the fighting is printed the talibant makes look more and more like a nationwide opposition. 11 months ago, british combat troops withdrew from afghanistan. The official line was that the Afghan National army was now Strong Enough to carry on the fight alone. His record has not been bad. His record has not been bad, but it has not stopped the taliban, as the fall of kunduz shows. Haveth the Afghan Forces shown over the last year is that they are pretty resilient. When they do seize territory, they very quickly regroup and retake it. With american air support that may happen soon. The shock to the Afghan Government has already been immense. John simpson, bbc news. Jane for more on the situation i spoke with the director of the International Security and Defense Sector at the rand corporation. How much of a disaster is this for the Afghan Security forces . It is a very serious setback. This is the first time, and many people have said this, that a provincial capital has fallen in the hands of the taliban since 2001. What is particularly important is that this is in the north. The area where the taliban, then he considered to be among the weakest. They are strongest in the south and east. The fact that this is in the north in a city like kunduz has very serious golf vacations the near future. Jane how have they managed to gain so much strength . They have done 2 things. They have taken advantage of continued grievances against the hani government. There is no minister of defense. There is a lot of friction between the upper and lower houses of parliament. There is friction between the ceo and president. Theres a lot of friction. The taliban have been methodically pushed into the interest around kunduz itself. There pushed in fighters, weapons, and then when that was in place, they moved into the city itself. It has been a longterm planning effort. Jane president ashraf ghani says the situation is under control. What can he do to show that it is . The territory needs to be taken back. My own involvement has been rural riding in afghanistan. This is urban combat. This is different. This is the deployment of special operations forces. It will be aircraft and helicopters involved. This has the potential to do serious damage in kunduz. Whos air force . Done isthe u. S. Has limited airstrikes. They have provided intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance above the city. Intelligence pictures on the ground. The commandos that are going in and the Afghan Special forces have been trained and jointly used by u. S. Special operations forces. They will be very close cooperation in kunduz between the u. S. And Afghan Special forces that have been deployed. Parallelsy any between afghanistan and what happened in iraq . Not really. The fact the u. S. Is still there and other nato forces are there in the ground, and they can push in aircraft if they need to means the taliban is not going to make the advances that they did in mosul and western iraq. Jane seth jones, thank you for joining me. Now to the United Nations with the threat of militants was at the top of todays agenda. President obama discussed the combat terrorism. He spoke about the resources being poured into battling Islamic State in iraq and syria. He also touched on the broader reach. President obama as isis tentacles reach into other areas we are increasing our partnership with other areas like tunisia. We are increasing support to nigeria as they push back against boko haram which has pledged allegiance to isis. We have a new clearinghouse to support countrys counterterrorism efforts, so our efforts are as effective as possible. It will not be enough to defeat isil in the battlefield. We have to prevent it from radicalizing and recruiting others to violence in the first place. This means defeating their ideology. Jane president obama speaking earlier today. A brief time ago i discussed the summit with Laura Trevelyan and the u. N. I spoke by speaking about the odd bedfellows in defeating the Islamic State and how far the u. S. Would go in cooperating with iraq, iran, and perhaps even the assad regime. Laura it is the milliondollar question. We will see. In some ways we saw this in miniature earlier in the year in theirand the fight of against the Islamic State. The americans were very uncomfortable about the fact that having carried out those coalition airstrikes, which was giving iraqi troops on the ground enough unity to go forward, those iraqi troops had senior commanders alongside them. That was a classic case of strange bedfellows. This was before the iran nuclear agreement, before there was any kind of official detente between the iranians and americans. You can imagine similar scenarios that might come to pass. One thing that has been theussed between them and americans is airstrikes, the russians have said that they might to be prepared to take part in airstrikes, but whether they are in support of president assad or against the Islamic State, it is unclear if they have to be authorized by the United Nations. A confused picture, clearly, these are the kinds of issues which are going to have to be dealt with on the road ahead. Issue raised in the summit is Islamic State recruitment. Around 30,000 foreign fighters are now in syria. What are they planning to do to talk about . Laura the human secretarygeneral the human the u. N. Secretarygeneral called into data a 70 increase in the number of foreign terrorist fighters from 140 Different Countries and going to conflict regions around the world. There was a lot about the need to try to confront the ideology, confront the mindset, and what to do you do. One of the most eloquent people, as he has been all this week, was the king of jordan. The jordanians who had to deal with the problem of is of the Islamic State. He said it was a responsibility of muslim teachers to confront those distorting the faith. Jane thank you for joining me from new york. One more issue raised that the introducingek was the prospect of a prisoner swap. It was suggested that tehran would release 3 americans if the u. S. Freed a number of iranians jailed for violating sanctions. Among the citizens is a correspondent for the Washington Post who was arrested in july 2014 and accused of spying. Barbara sat down in new york to get his reaction to the suggestion. His really should not be tied things that he had nothing to do with. If that what it takes to get them out, i will not to judge it. I just want him to be free. What you think when you hear president rouhani say things like that . We did not know what the iran he is wanted. They said they wanted justice system. We went through that process. We have been waiting ive weeks for a verdict that should have been by law brought down five weeks ago. We know there is no evidence. Is whatame, if that they need, it would at least give us hope of getting him out to somehow. He does not deserve to be there. Changedhe atmosphere is since the Iranian Nuclear deal was agreed . Like people were not paying attention before, but since then it has become a part of a lot of peoples conversations, whether it is likewise they should or should not to do the deal, or other things. Im happy that there is more knowledge of jason in the case, but on the other case, nothing has changed for him. There is suggestion such a brother was a victim of internal politics and iran. What do you think . It is unfair, and inhumane, to take an innocent person and thatthem part of that if is the case. I do not know. We have seen the indictment. We know what kinds of evidence they claim to have, and it is nothing. He did not commit any crimes. We do not know why they even picked about. When was the last time you or your family spoke to him. What is the sense of how he is feeling or how he is . That is one of the good things. My mother is in iran right now. Jasons wife is there. They are allowed to see him once or twice a week. They actually go into the prison and meet with him. They are able to have several phone calls a week for five minutes each. That is a big difference than early on when he was completely isolated and not able to talk to anyone. Now, both his wife and my mother are able to see him. What is his condition . What are his spirits like . Meetings like this and talks of deals get his hopes up. Then he gets really depressed. He gets expectations. I think that his spirits are really low. They are as low as they have ever been. 20 scenes when he sees people come over from the United States and the deal is made, and he is still there, he does not understand why it can happen. Rezaian talking to barbara in new york. We will keep you uptodate on any negotiations and if a deal is reached.
