Visit, but not before getting in a full leg of events, including becoming the first pope ever to address a joint session of congress. He took on some of the most contentious issues of the day including climate change, immigration, and the Death Penalty. Our religious correspondent reports. Caroline an exceptional visitor for congress and an unusual audience for a pope. The first time americas lawmakers have invited a pope to speak. Pope francis i am most grateful for your invitation to address this joint session of congress in the land of the free and the home of the brave. [applause] caroline he tackled the subject of the deep Division Head on. He called to help migrants and. Efugees pope francis we must not be , but aback by the numbers rather view them as persons. God bless america. Caroline there was something for everyone, democratic and republican alike. The pope eventually called for america to put the Death Penalty to an end. Democratic senator bob casey, a catholic, says the pope may not change minds on issues like funding for abortion and contraception, but he has challenged people to think. Part of his appeal and part of the power he has is that of inspiration. if he can inspire folks in washington at least to relate to each other in a more positive way, that alone would the a significant achievement. Caroline the pope took to the balcony to address those outside as this become of the house, a catholic, was overcome with emotion. This is a pope that everyone has tried to claim as their own, both left and right. But today, speaking to congress, he called on america and the ofld to confront every form extremism and polarization that would divide the world into us and them. Laura for more on the address, i spoke a short time ago to father thomas reese, a Senior Analyst at the National Catholic reporter. To congress. Spoke was he being deliberately diplomatic knowing that he was addressing a divided house . I think so. I think he had certain things he wanted to make as his point, but i think he was very smart and brilliant in the way he gave that address because he started by affirming the good things in america freedom, liberty, progress that people have made here, the way peoples dreams have then fulfilled by coming to america. But you cand into do more and lets keep going. He was very specific on the refugee crisis, telling americans not to be taken aback by the numbers. Very much so. I was touched by the way he identified himself as the son of an immigrant family. Its very personal for him. He knows what its like to be the child of immigrants. I love the way he used the golden rule. Put your shoes laura do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Absolutely. Walk in the same shoes as these people. If you were fleeing violence on prejudice and persecution and war, wouldnt you want to be into a country . He was so articulate. Noted that polarization and all of its forms should be confronted in fronn of this congress which is so polarized and deadlocked. Absolutely. You are exactly right. He was referring to polarization in the world but also in our country. We are so partisan. We are divided. Hes basically saying get over it. Sit down, get to work, listen to one another with respect and Work Together to solve our nations problems and the problems of the world. Francis first visit to america. How you think hes finding this country . He has certainly done his homework from the speeches he has given. He has found enthusiastic people who love him and are cheering. Im and admire him he got a very warm reception, but i was impressed by desk even though he has never been here before, he has a good take on this country. He knows our idealism. He knows our love of freedom, and yet, he also calls us to a greater responsibility. Laura thank you for joining us. good to be with you. According to the german transport minister, volkswagen admitted to so companies in europe were fitted with the same software as cars used tt cheat on admissions test in the u. S. On emissions tests in the u. S. We knew volkswagen had cheated on tests to make cars look greener in the united states, but in the company do the same in europe, to tackle the german transport minister indicated that it had. Weve been informed that also in europe, vehicles with 1. 6 and twoliter diesel engines are affected by the manipulations that are being talked about. We will continue to work closely with vw about which vehicles are affected. Its almost a week since volkswagen admitted it had yet,ed emissions test, and we still do not know of other carmakers have done this as well and what the implications are drivers and the owners of volkswagens. Will the schedule his sales of diesel vehicles that the at this specialist retailer, they will are not convince. At the end of the day, theres always a time and place. People on a long journey, people traveling up and down the country. But some customers thinking of buying a volkswagen are thinking again. Thinking about a volkswagen, if there are 11. 5 million cars with this fault, its a depreciation of their value. Is the b w brand and the value of their cars damage for good . Not according to one longterm industry watcher. The status keeps the value up. Thats why people buy used. It gives them more status than anything in the class, but now theres a lot of confusion, so values will soften, but eventually, they will come back up again. Today, shares in tm w fell sharply. The company had to deny reports it had manipulated emissions test, too. The entire Auto Industry is under the microscope. Who knows where this will all end . Laura still to come, after thousands of miles, she has made her way out of syria in hopes of a better life. We will have her story. Have earnedfighters through california, and lanes are now coming under control due to thousands of our writers, more than a third of whom are prison inmates. Heres why a few signed up for the dangerous job. I like the intensity of it. Its hot, and youve got about 40 pounds of gear, so you are constantly sweating. Im in the best shape of my life right now from literally being out there and writing fires and death. In prison, its pretty much every man for himself. When you are out on a fire, you have to rely on each other to get the job done and come home safely. We are the largest fire camp in the city of california. We house lowlevel inmates. Theft, drugrelated offenses, alcoholrelated offenses. Back in 1946, california conservations darted the program to assist with wildlife fires, and they wanted to utilize inmate labor. I got some time no caps off i got some time knocked off for coming here. Months off mysix sentence. Its the most successful Rehabilitation Program we have offered. All the lines are kind of a race because the job has to get done. Everybody is there to do the job. Everybodys opinion on each other, civilian and inmate alike, is to keep each other alive. Before, i just lived daytoday, but now im trying to settle down. It makes you feel like youve made a difference, you know . People in the community are just thankful for the work we do to stop fires from destroying their homes. Laura chancellor merkel of germany warned at the migration crisis is far from being solved despite the measures agreed from eu leaders to help refugees in the middle east. Our special correspondent followed 116yearold who has traveled thousands of miles to germany where she is now applying for asylum. Heres the latest report on her progress. There are big plans being made now, but nobody really end. How or when this will if any plan can stop the arrival of tens of thousands seeking a najim,e in europe, like who we first met on hungarys border trying to reach her brother, already in germany. A disabled 16yearold with big dreams. I want to meet the queen. Buddy europe, including britain, would prefer Syrian Refugees stayed in the middle east. Thats why one billion euros has been pledged to help countries like turkey. From where she set out to try to reach germany with her sister, help by a emily and. Turkey wants to kick you out of this country. I did not feel welcome. By the time we met her again, they had been detained in slovenia. Europe was struggling to find a coherent response to the crisis. People were pushed from border to border or held in centers like this. This is another way station on the long journey that many of these people have made, and its a way station on europes trail of alien to do with this crisis. For this district trip to germany, this is a problem any government that says yes to her coming will be faced with questions from many other people demanding why not been. The same day, the two were moved to another camp in slovenia with other refugees and migrants. Do you know where you are going or where they will send you after this . I dont know. Im lost here. Human rights activist pressure the government. She was released, and here she her nearly 4000 mile journey on a train to meet her brother in germany. Join needs no translation. Joy needs no translation. Ive heard a lot about what europe can give to them, but let me ask you what can your family give to europe . The most important thing we can give heres to give a good example about our people and about the countrys just a country we came from. In northern germany, shes on her way to apply for asylum. As a syrian refugee, she has a good chance. Palsys born with cerebral , but she believes advanced medical help here could enable her to walk. Place. Me to the right im hopeful they will help me. When you look into the future, do you ever see a day when you might bring your gift, the great gift of inspiration you have, that you might bring that back to syria, to your people . Im not really sure. Its going to take a long, long syria gets back up. Will syria get back up . Yes, she will. Im sure about that. But many millions have already abandoned syria, and today, thousands more were arriving in the eu. A nation that loses a child like najim is losing its best. Laura as the migrant crisis continues to test the response, english football star David Beckham was in the United Nations calling for children to be at the center of a bold new plan. The day ahead of the adoption of the Sustainable Development goals which aim to illuminate poverty and hunger over the next 15 years. I spoke about what he hopes to accomplish. We cannot bring forth the children of the world here, so we brought their voices. I think its a powerful thing to be able to do and to try to get World Leaders to actually really focus on the future and really focus on children. What is to stop World Leaders ignoring your plea to put disadvantaged children at the policy . Their theres only so much ignoring you can do. When you hear children speak and see the devastation going on around the world and the devastation happening around the world to children you know, im a father. You do not ignore that. So many children are being war and con in syria, iraq, afghan is an. Refugees who were children are turning up. Do you have any plans to highlight the plight of these refugee children . One thing im not as a politician. Tores a lot better people handle and discuss these situations than myself, but one thing i am is a there. When you see the devastating images that have been out there they might be refugees. They are human beings at the end of the day. They are children. As a father and as a parent, you how much pressure and how much devastation is going on around these children. You have been a United NationsChildrens Fund goodwill ambassador for 10 years now, and the places you have been around the world, which stories have moved you the most. Unfortunately, every time i go on the ground for unicef, theres another story for another 10 stories or 20 children that want to tell me their story about their children. Thats one of the reasons why im so proud to be an ambassador for unicef, so proud to be part of an organization that does so much for children around the world. It has been a good 10 years, and im looking forward to the next set. When you were visiting children in cambodia recently, what stories did they have to tell . Visiting the different centers, seeing poverty and seeing the destruction of so part of thein that world, but mostly seeing young girls being put to work on the streets. That was difficult to talk about. It was difficult to see, but what was great to see is centers that are being built and being put therefore these young girls being something that is helping. What difference can you with your celebrity really make to the plight of disadvantaged children around the world . I can shine a light on situations. Thankfully, i have a voice people listen to. Thankfully, i have something to say and important to say about unicef. The Manchester United fund said there are only for worldclass players in the history of menu man u. He did not include you. Are you insulted . No. I was lucky to have played with the players i did in the team and be successful with the club that i loved and still love. I tend to agree with the manager. Theres certain players that you can call world class. Thankfully, i played with many of them. Laura David Beckham speaking to me earlier today in new york. That brings todays broadcast to a close.
