Almost every entity across the globe. Success takes partnership and only through discipline and trust can we create something greater than ourselves. Mufg, we build relationships that build the world. And now, bbc world news america. This is bbc world news america reporting from washington. In a sea of misery, two miracles. A boy and young woman are pulled alive from the rubble. Five days after. Brought together by their common humanity to save a single life. Police in baltimore wrapup their review of the unexplained death of freddie gray. The event that sparked the violent protests. This cheetah looks cuddly but if you are an african farmer they are less lovely. Conservation. Welcome. Tonight we have some good news from nepal. Five days after an earthquake, there have been two dramatic rescues in kathmandu. Bbc crews were on the scene of both of them and a teenage boy who said he survived bike ty eating butter. A frantic search has just begun. A sevenstory guesthouse collapsed. Five days after the earthquake hit, the sound of a survivor. A mad scramble to reach him as quickly as possible. Inside, we have heard a voice. There is a person communicating who says he is 15 years old. He asked for water. They were able to handle him a bottle of water and now all of these people are trying to get to him. Its unclear how he survived under the rubble. Rescuers are tunneling through the concrete and using cameras. About this wide and this tall. You can see his face. One of them crawls through and reaches him. [speaking foreign language] then. The miracle moment. [speaking foreign language] he is out. He is alive. After more than 120 hours buried in the ruins, he is finally safe. [applause] the 15yearold boy rescued. Look at this rescue team. They have been here since yesterday and this is the first time i have seen them smile. This is a small victory. [applause] in the absolute tragedy that has hit the country of nepal. The officer who pulled him out is the hero of the day. [cheers and applause] we pulled him out. And i think this is great. There is a family to help him. He did not have a father and his mother had to go abroad to earn a living. At the hospital, doctors tell us they were surprised at his strength. After a quick checkup, we are allowed to see him. There were two bottles of water and butter. That is what i ate. I drink water from a squeezed cloth. There were people around me screaming. I could hear them. After almost a week, his rescue has reignited hope. More people could still be found alive. As if the rescue of him was not extraordinary enough, that wasnt the only welcome news. A young woman named krishna was also found in the rubble. After hours of struggling rescuers were able to reach her, too. It is midday in kathmandu. Rescue teams are looking for survivors of the quake. There is a call for silence. A tapping noise heard from the bottom of a collapsed building. Could someone be alive . Someone alive inside. Rescuers use their bare hands to clear the rubble. Whoever is trapped cannot be far from the end. Probably injured dehydrated and terribly weak. They are continuing to search to try to find the exact location from where the sound of what may be a woman who is alive are coming from. The authorities are trying to work out how best to get to her. There is disagreement. The french team has one idea the norwegians and israelis have another. Tension boils over. Dont shout at me. They compromise. They decide to dig from three directions. Is she still alive five hours on . A medic is called in. I held her hand and i have barely seen her face. She is awake and lucid. We managed to get to one hand and put in on young iv. We are giving her saline to rehydrate her. The path to her is blocked by a dead body. Six hours since the rescue began. The body is now being removed. Two hours later. Success. Her name is krishna. This is what the last 8. 5 hours have been all about. All of the effort, all of the sweat. Rescue teams that did not know each other before today. Brought together by their common humanity am a sustained a single life. Thousands are still missing after the earthquake. Many presumed buried under rubble and collapsed buildings. As time goes by, hopes of fighting more people alive, just like krishna, are dwindling. I spoke to clive just a short time ago in kathmandu. Has this given the rescue teams hope they can carry on to find more people . It seems extraordinary. It does. Five days on, two survivors pulled out today. There have been a few more in the last couple of days. It does give the rescuers and the search teams hope that they can find more people so long after the earthquake struck. What youre finding here in kathmandu, a lot of the buildings that have been pushed together as a result of the earthquake. There are pockets of air beneath the rubble. People have the ability to survive in those pockets of air. There has not been on young enormous amount of rain or flooding. They have crush injuries which are indicative of buildings collapsing on top of them, but they have been able to survive to a degree. We heard from one report that a young boy survived on butter. That is what he ate. One woman they pulled from the rubble today, she didnt have anything. She managed to survive. Was badly dehydrated and incredibly weak. One of the first things rescuers managed to do was put in an intravenous drip to give her a saline solution so she could build up the strength to get out of the rubble. It is five days, to the day since the earthquake struck last saturday. The longer the time goes on, the more difficult it will be. As a result, hope is dwindling. For many, hope stays alive. Thank you so much for bringing us some good news. The police in baltimore today announced they have completed their investigation into the death of freddie gray. The young black men who died in police custody. Reports are now being delivered to the chief prosecutor. His death sparked mass protests which turned violent earlier this week. Tensions are spilling over into other cities as well. Do you think the release of this preliminary Police Report will called tensions at all in baltimore . No i dont think much of anything will calm tensions right away. One of the things that the president mentioned ins remarks on tuesday is that it seems like we are in a cycle where every week or two bomb we have on young incident. This goes back to august. We had the shooting and killing in ferguson, missouri. It is not just this one incident or resolution. This goes back to august but also much further that. Rodney king in 1992 and the urban riots in 19 627. There in 1967. There were many that year and a lot of them had to do with Police Action in communities. It is amazing how long this has been going on and how little has been done to resolve it. When you look at the polls and the difference between africanamerican confidence in the police being held accountable and white confidence, you see why these reports dont have much effect. The unfortunate reality is those poll results are not new. What you find is that most whites think that Police Treatment is equal and fair and most blacks think it is not. That goes back decades and i have never seen a poll that does not show that. That rebills a fundamental mismatch on how we perceive Race Relations in society and a fundamental disagreement on how race operates. Do you think the events in the last six months will have done anything to make africanamericans feel confident that this issue is going to be addressed . I think that what has happened is that you have this stuff aint sustained dialogue. Something people are talking about in a way they havent before. You also have a White House Task force policing in the 21st century. A black president and black attorney general who are clearly concerned. I think, income and asian with all of those factors we may the able to make progress after more than a halfcentury. What would be the single most important thing that could change . The single most important thing would be that everyone realize, particularly policeman that young black men are not that different from young wightman. Young black young white men. Young black men are 21 times as likely to be shot by cops. It has to do with the fear that cops have. There is this image of fearful angry, dangerous black men. That is an image getting black men killed across america. An image that has to change. Thank you for joining me. A look at some other news. 10 militants involved in code planning the attack on school years in pakistan have been sentenced to life in prison. Malala who is targeted for campaigning for Girls Education was shot in ahead by pakistani taliban. Last year she became the youngest person ever to receive the nobel peace prize. Nigeria says it rescued more women and girls kidnapped by boka haram. 161 and women were freed in the forest. None of them rescued inclusive that schoolgirls. For many, the thousands of migrants who risked their lives to get to europe, their perilous journey starts long before the water. Increasingly, they start in the Subsaharan Africa and make another track across the sahara. Some never survive. This year, thousands of migrants will pass through this town and it is from there that we have this report. It may look pictureperfect but beneath the surface it is unforgiving. Merciless. We drove through a town owned by smugglers. The commodities are not just goods, but people, too. In this murky and secretive place, we negotiate with the traffickers to see the migrants he will soon send to libya. This is where the exodus begins. These young men do not want to hear how many have drowned in the mediterranean. They all have a friend who has made it to europe and they believe they can make it, too. Sally is 19. He left hoping to play football and coeurope. What does he think he will need . Money and prayer. Thats all . I think so. That will get you to europe . And be confident. You cannot be here without having confidence. I do think so. Even if just a handful of migrants made it, more would follow. Those who profit from this lucrative business have always adapted to europes new plans. Traffickers know the rules. They know everything. They have always done that. I think we will continue for sure. If we do not use trucks, we will use camels or something else. This is the first see that african migrants have to cross. A sea of sand. 2000 kilometers of desert. When loris get struck traffickers abandon them. Many die in the extreme heat, but you will never hear about it. Corruption and a lack of education and jobs feed human trafficking. An african government remains largely silent. The migrants are on a truck today. They may be on a boat tomorrow. Extraordinary scenes from the sahara. Youre watching bbc world news america. Still to come, the men who want to become britains next Prime Minister answer tough questions from the voters. On saturday, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will square off in the boxing ring. The money is extraordinary. In one corner you have Floyd Mayweather. The undefeated champion and richest sportsman on the planet, expected to increase his wealth by 200 million more. That dwarfs the sum the man in the other corner will receive the same fight. Manny pacquiao will pick up on young estimated 100 million. Despite the incredible sums on offer, mayweather taunted his rival. Im happy to see that manny is on floyds mind. There are more important things than money. That is not only my sentiment that is mannys sentiment. We like money but we are not obsessed with money. Pacquiao may not be obsessed with the bottom line but he will be happy to check his bank balance come saturday. It wont just be the boxers making a profit. The mayweather fight is a license to print money. Every time he gets into the ring, he brings in hundred Million Dollars 100 million. This firm has been working with mayweather for the past year. Normally they would expect sales of merchandise to be around the 400,000 mark. It has been projected this year that sales will go past 300 million. The entire town is excited. It brings in a lot of business. Normally in vegas, it is only the house that wins. On this occasion, whatever the result, the fighters and local businesses and already hit the jackpot. Just one week from now, the polls will be closed and accounting of ballots will begin in the british election. The Major Political parties had a chance to make their case in front of an television audience. This time it was voters asking the questions. Looking at the snap polls on these events, it looks like David Cameron won it. Is that a reflection of the general polls . No. They tend to be more evenly balanced. Can i say i was wrong. I thought giving some of the other Television Debates being frightfully tedious that this would be the case. It was not bad at all. British campaigns, the politicians are sheltered from the voters as they speak to a dohring hands and are kept away from People Like Us asking if the goal questions difficult questions. Here they are, in the way that lions who smell we meet get hungry. It was absolutely fascinating. Does it reflect the polls . No. Will it change very much that David Cameron did well and the others troubled . Struggled . Probably not. I tuned in a few times and i did hear all of ed miliband and David Cameron being called blatant liars. Is that reflective of voter dissatisfaction . Im not sure whether that reflects entirely across the country but you hit the nail on the head. These were voters saying let me at them, i want to get at them. It is fair to say that ever since the scandal over empty expenses, there is an awful lot of voter mistrust. Of course, that on top of the Great Recession means that politicians and voters are not best friends. Your vast fortune, which way will you put it that night . I am not. I think it is incredibly close. For a brief moment, people think it will be easy to form a coalition generally, i think britain could be on the brink of something uncertain and that maybe much more difficult for these politicians to form another type of agreement after the votes are cast. In the darwinian world of big game, there is always a conflict with humans. In africa farmers see big cats as a threat to their livestock. Now conservationists are trying to save a relationship and they are using technology to save the local cheetah population. Rescued just in time. A month old leopard that had its foots in the jaws of a trap. It was set by a londoner to protect his livestock from carnivores. Leopards, cheetahs and wild dogs are caught in a conflict with farmers this team is trying to resolve. We try to give them a solution. To not work against them. That is always the challenge. Finding a way to solve these problems, because they make a living out of farming. Working with the network, the team is developing ways to protect livestock and conserve predators. Using guard donkeys. When raised, able kick and bite to protect their herd. It is not always easy to lament implement, it is a new kind of thinking. I think a lot of people are trying to implement new methods. To learn more about the carnivores, the team needs to catch and track them. We have a call from our researcher carl, he has caught a cheetah in one of his box traps and we will go down. The researchers and the farmers they work with have you main cage traps. Humane cage traps. When it is trapped it has to be fitted with a collar. Even in the desert, conditions can be unpredictable. [inaudible] this young male cheetah is still sedated. They fitted him with this gps tracking collar. It brought him back here to the same sites where he was tracked. When he wakes up he will know where he is. This animal is one of 60 colored predators that the team is sharing with farmers. We can identify when he made a kill and then we can prove or disprove whether specific animals are causing conflict by praying on livestock. A few specific cases of cats hunting livestock. Theyve shown that most only occasionally take a calf. They are finding ways for homes to thrive in the ways of some of the most threatened and feared predators. That was not just an excuse to show you cute cheetahs. If we save these animals, the Farmer Welfare has to be taken into account. That brings a close to this weeks program.
