There is frustration it is not coming fast enough. The horrors human trafficking. Bbc get an inside look at how it is done, and who suffers the most. Behind the trade is a complex criminal and tribal network. Almost nothing is being done to stop it. Laura experts are trying to restore antiquities after disaster strikes. Laura welcome to our viewers on Public Television and america and around the world. There is growing frustration in nepal at the slow pace of relief operations after the devastating earthquake that killed more than 5000 people. Survivors are in need of basic supplies. The government is struggling to cope with the scale of the disaster. In a hospital in kathmandu every breath is painful. His ribs were crushed by the weight of his own home, toppling during the earthquake. He survived, his wife did not. I lost my wife that day, but i do not know what happened, he said. We were at home, then i woke up here, and was told my wife was dead. Kathmandu, last saturday, sunny and above ground, but below, a shock awaits. The cct images record the earthquake at 11 52 in the morning. We do not know if anyone died here. His niece shows what it did to her family home. Wow. This is the house . Were you close . Is there any way that this can be rebuilt . No. How to . Others join us. Eager to talk. You were saying that the government is no good . It is a view echoed by everyone. There is the thought that aid is not reaching survivors. Eight has been arriving, so why the delay to getting it to those in need . They are constructing warehouses at the main airport to hold the aid that is coming in. Experts will say that the first few days of any earthquake is taken up with search and rescue. The fact is it adds fuel to the critics arguments that the government is not handling this crisis properly. Search and rescue operations need to continue for a little while longer. This is a british team in the remote northeastern part of the country. In kathmandu he was pulled from the rubble 82 hours after the earthquake, and is thankful no one he give up on him. His survival dependent on drinking his own urine. After any major disaster, alan singh search with a distribution is balancing search and rescue with a distribution with aid distribution is tough. Katty he was on the ground in nepal when the earthquake hit. Having been there yourself and having seen the destruction, what is the biggest barrier to aid reaching those in need . Is a combination of several factors. The difficult logistical situation on the ground, from the airport, dealing with the fact that this was an earthquake that hit a large area with difficult terrain. The roads are bad to start with, then landslides, then rain that triggered more landslides, it is a combination of things that make it challenging to get aid to those who needed the most. I have to stress, theres a big effort underway to scale up. We are working with the government to address the bottlenecks and get aid to those who need it, everywhere there is a need. This is a vast disaster. Any country would have problems dealing with this situation, and nepal is a poor country with limited capacity. We have to stick together and make the best out of a challenging situation, get the aid out that is flowing in despite the logistical challenges at the airport. Katty laura how is the monsoon season going to complicate matters . When a hard rain hits, it will complicate it quite a bit. We know that from experience. That is why we need to work with the government, and local communities, in making it work. People on the ground, societies in nepal are stepping up and doing fantastic work on a volunteer basis, helping each other. We need to tap into that. And also people around the world supporting the nepalese government and people in this difficult situation. Laura 1. 8 million children have been affected by the earthquake. How do you help those that were common and separated from their parents . 1. 7 million children in the need of help. They need everything from Safe Drinking Water so we are bringing tablets to clean the water they need nutritious food, they need shelter, and they need help in dealing with the trauma they have experienced whether it is the loss of a family member, parents or siblings, or people entered in their communities, and they themselves were traumatized by the earthquakes and to the aftershocks. Theres a huge effort underway. We are working with our partners on the ground. In nepal there are 40,000 child clubs that have been organized over the last few years. From age 13 to 18 they are working together to improve the lives of children. They have made great progress, and this is a tremendous resource, that children themselves can help each other. Laura thank you for joining us. The European Parliament is calling for countries to share the burden of dealing with the migrant crisis in the mediterranean. This comes after more than 750 people died crossing on a boat from libya 10 days ago. As Quentin Sommerville reports. A badly kept secret is uncovered. A somali woman and her babies were hidden here for two days. No food, no water, and they could hardly breathe. This is what they go through even before the horrors of a sea crossing. Terrified migrants were packed in each truck. Crawling into the light, a pregnant woman. The journey nearly killed her. He, in the middle, thought he would die, as well. We found him inside this libyan jail. I paid 1700 pounds to be smuggled. They treated us like cargo. Quentin with so much money at stake, the smugglers are shy of publicity, but one decided to speak anonymously. He has grown rich off of the trade. The amount of money is phenomenal. A fishing boat worth 20,000 pounds can be worth 100,000 pounds with smuggling. Some of them get there, others will die. Quentin does it matter to you that so many will die . The emigrants are told everything before they get on board. If you pay 300 pounds, you get on a small boat. If you pay more, you get on a better boat. Quentin the signs of a booming business are everywhere, especially here at the morgue. He lost his sense of smell years ago. The bodies putrefy in the heat. We are worried about the increasing number. Last week we buried more than 20 bodies collected from the sea. Sometimes it takes a month to collect them all. Quentin libyan trafficking is worth at least 100 Million Pounds a year. Sometimes the people smugglers abandon the migrants in the middle of the desert. They tell them to follow the power lines, and you will eventually reach a city. Many dont make it. The migrant numbers are so large, fortunes are being made in the sun. Behind the trade is a complex criminal and tribal network, and almost nothing is being done to stop it. Every day, more arrived. Here, another truckload. Libya does not function as a country, but in trafficking, it is untouchable. It is africas, and the worlds, smuggling state. Britains Supreme Court says that air pollution must be reduced under european law after the u. K. Reached the limits on nitrogen dioxide. More on this phenomenon. Sometimes, you can see the gray haze of pollution in the air. Usually, it is the invisible stuff that does the most harm. Eddie connor suffers from asthma. He used to run, now he can only watch others pass by. Eddie especially during the summer, when there is very little breeze, it sticks in the air and i get scared it could facilitate a dangerous attack. The u. K. , like a number of other European Countries the Supreme Court rolled a must be a new plan for pollution by the end of the year. After a fiveyear legal battle we have our rights upheld for clean air. We hope that whatever the next government is, they will come forward with a really good plan. That plan can only work if it tackles traffic, diesel engines in particular, a major source of pollution in urban areas, in britain and the rest of europe. The problem is so many people have been in courage to buy diesel, because they are cheaper than petrol engines and give off less carbon dioxide. Making a switch away from those will be a difficult challenge. The Environment Ministry says the air quality is getting better, but after todays judgment the next government will face more pressure to clean up. Laura in baltimore, the schools will reopen, and the streets are quieter after mondays writing. The city remains in a state of emergency. They are preparing for a second round of curfews. Peaceful protests continue. You may have seen this mother going after her son for taking part in the violence. She spotted him with a rock locked eyes, and pounced. I was saying, how dare you do this. He went to the funeral of freddie gray. If he wanted to do that, i would have allowed him to. Even if you wanted to stay home from school to go to the funeral, i would have allowed him to. For him to do with you was doing, it was unacceptable. Toya graham. As the city that you live and report on a person of the second night of curfew, what is the atmosphere like . Things have been tense for the last couple of days. They eased up yesterday. Into last night, as the curfew take 10 at 10 00, things got tense. There were arrests and tear gas. In the morning, without a lot of violence overnight, things cooled down. There are marches this afternoon that has people on it, but how big they will be, they start at a main railway station, penn station, and goes to city hall. There is a big Police Presence and National Guard troops at city hall. It will be another test this evening. Laura when you were in the thick of it on monday night, did it feel like this was a crisis over policing, or something more profound . I think theres something more profound, beyond Police Brutality and complaints from the Africanamerican Community about their treatment at the hands of police and the criminal justice system. There has been a Church Edition of aggressive policing in baltimore there has been a tradition of aggressive policing in baltimore for 10 years. That has led to problems where young men cannot get jobs because they have a record. They get out of prison and cannot find employment. That idle time leads to more problems. There is more going on than just complaints about Police Brutality. A lot has been bottled up over the years. Laura baltimore and saw a riots in 1968. What single change do you think would help the city avoid more violence . People who have been there since the 1968 riots they see this event as an aftershock from even then. Things have not progressed aggressively enough to where the rest of baltimore has experienced somewhat of a renaissance. Theres Economic Activity and a lot of good things, but it has not filtered out to every community. There is a push to get Economic Activity into the neighborhoods but not focusing around the inner harbor. I have been here for 12 years, theres a part of the inner harbor that has just become part of the skyline, while some neighborhoods have gotten worse with boarded up housing. There is a push to do more Economic Development in the neighborhoods, and that is what people are pushing for. Laura doug donovan, thank you for joining us.
