Welcome to our viewers on Public Television here in america and all though around the globe. Today, an American Health care worker who caught the bolo while volunteering in sierra leone arrived in the u. S. For treatment. The National Institute of health is the patient is in serious condition. The World Health Organization released figures showing that more than 10,000 people have died of virus, mainly in west african nation. One of them is skinny. Is guinea, where dr. Friedman joined me a short time ago. Lets start with the American Health care worker. Can you tell me anything more about their condition . Dr. Friedman not about the condition. We will have to he have echoes. We have a large team on the ground in the field where the infection occurred to determine if there are other people at risk and how they could be monitored so that if they were to become ill, they could be rapidly isolated and treated. Kathy ginny does not have the highest number of debt from ebola, but it does prove to be difficult in terms of cracking the virus. What did you find there . Dr. Friedman it is larger than the other two countries combined, both in population and area. It is heterogeneous. This is a significant challenge. I think this type those challenges, ginny has made real progress. They did not have the kind of explosives guinea has made real progress. They did not see the kind of explosive spread the other two countries did. There may be more resist ends resistance or pure people willing to say that obama is a serious problem and takes them or fewer people willing to say that ebola is a serious problem and willing to take some serious action. People have traveled by helicopter hiked, traveled by canoe and boat. In the forest area of guinea, we have seen no cases of ebola. It is an area the size of sierra leone, and they have basically been able to clear it. Even to travel to a relatively nearby place, i went by helicopter because the roads are problematic. It takes so long. The population makes it a real challenge. It is going to be difficult, but we can still get to zero. The guineans, the french, the World Health Organization all of our partners are doing a good job there. Kathy the outbreak began a year ago. Do you find that your team of doctors is still coming up against cultural hurdles resistance to the kind of treatments needed . Dr. Friedman when the disease gets to each new community, it sometimes has to go through a painful process. The imam have been very sup word of and clear on supportive and clear on messaging, but the resistance to care is quite strong. I talked to a doctor who cared for a nurse and two patients. The two patients sadly died. The nurse survived. Because the nurse survived, the community would not let him back in. They said you killed these other two people. The misconceptions have made things very difficult. In the forest area it took months to overcome objections. In the urban area, it has taken weeks. The challenge is to get that done in each community where ebola rises as eckley as possible. Kathy thank you so much for joining us as quickly as possible. Kathy thank you so much for joining us on the program. Swedish prosecutors say they are prepared to question wikileaks founder Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy in london where he has sent almost three years avoiding extradition. They have explained the change in position by saying some of the crimes he is accused of, includings x offenses, sex offenses, will expire. Longrunning diplomatic and legal wrangles are no closer to being resolved. It has been getting onto three years since Julian Assange fled to the Ecuadorian Embassy in. The founder of wikileaks first made headlines in 2010 when he published hundreds of thousands of american documents. He says he fears being extradited to the United States, but it is actually sweden that wants him to face charges of Sexual Assault right to women. He has always denied the allegations. He was briefly arrested here and a battle ensued over his extradition. He lost. Now with the swedish statute of limitations looming, prosecutors have offered to come to london. We have been asking for this to happen for over four years. The only thing that is irritating is that it comes so late because it has kept Julian Assange in the embassy for over two and a half years now. We are happy they will go, but we are irritated they didnt go before. The Foreign Office says it is willing to facilitate the swedish prosecutor. It could be welcome news for the metropolitan police, which has spent well over 10 Million Pounds making sure Julian Assange doesnt slip away. Kathy the iraqi army, together with shia militia, are attempting to take back the itty of tikrit from Islamic State in iraq. The latest battles the city of tikrit from Islamic State in iraq. The defense minister has called this a turning point. For more on the significance of this battle, i spoke a short time ago with robin wright, a distinguished scholar at the u. S. Institute for peace. Do you agree that crete is a defining battle . Robin most of the operations up until now since last summer have been either cashmere or kirk kurdish militias in the north. This is the first time we have seen the iraqi army back in force. It will be a test of whether they are in effect of fighting force. An effective fighting force. They are only a quarter of the strength they were in 2009. This is a moment where you find no many shiite militias involved in fighting so many shiite militias involved in fighting a sunni military force. Kathy describe to me whose command they are under and where they are getting their intelligence and instructions from. Robin they are in the city that was the birthplace of saddam hussein. It involves about one third of the forces. Two thirds are shiite militias aligned with the government in baghdad who do not always cooperate with their sunni counterparts. Then you have sunni tribal leaders. All of them are largely under the command or strategic advice of iranian generals from the revolutionary guards in iran. Kathy and america is nowhere to be seen. Robin that is what makes it so interesting. The United States has been a major player from the air, but has been unwilling, like most of its allies, to engage on the ground. The iranians have come in and done the most. Kathy you said that tikrit is like ground zero between the terrorists and washington. Robin the United States between iran and washington. Robin the United States has been in the air and iran has been on the ground. Ayatollah khamenei has been ubiquitous on the war front. There are pictures of him on instagram. Kathy they are ceding control of this rattle to battle to the irani ends come iranians, apparently. Robin iraq has been involved in the decision as well they did not want the u. S. In this aim place same place. Kathy briefly, will they win tikrit . It will be bloody but they will get it . Robin i suspect isis will retreat, but that does not mean they are a defeated force. In a city twice as large as tikrit, they have managed to increase their forces. This is a game of cat and mouse and not to straightforward victory yet. Kathy what is happening on the ground in iraq is extremely complicated and has global applications for the balance of power in the region. As forces worked to defeat Islamic State new footage has emerged of three british schoolgirls who are thought to have traveled already to syria to join the militants. The images show the girls on the Turkish Border near syria. In the hands of the people smugglers in the turkish town close to the Syrian Border three girls changing vehicles with the same distinctive luggage they were seen carrying at the airport. Filmed three weeks ago, this is the last stage of that journey through turkey before they crossed into syria. The three girls left their homes three weeks ago last tuesday and flew to the stumble flew to turkey. There they waited in a bus station for 18 hours. Yesterday, this man in a brown jacket who seems to have filmed the pictures was arrested by turkish police. In an odd twist, he was described as a spy. It is someone who works for an Intelligence Agency that is from one of the countries that is part of the u. S. Coalition. The girls are learning how to be members of the socalled Islamic State. Kathy the mystery of the teenage girls. A quick look around the world. President obama has been visiting with the american the family of the american aid worker who was killed in syria. She was working in aleppo in 2013 when she was taken by the group. The International Criminal court in the hague has officially terminated its case against the kenyan president. Hireable. James started coding in the third grade. At the ripe old age of 29, he has little interest in joining a big company. Management has helped him thrive in the digital age. It makes sense in this market. We discovered pretty quickly that people who are creative want to focus on the thing they are talented at and dont want to get bogged down in details. Let somebody else deal with the invoicing, the contracts, the headaches. Let me do what i am good at. Others agree the agency works well in a sector where there is an acute shortage of talent.
