In accordance with the constitution, taking into account the power vacuum this has created and considering the urgency of safeguarding the nation, it has been decided i will assume the responsibility of head of state from this day onward. For more on the turmoil in burkina faso, i spoke a brief time ago to peter santa, the africa director of the atlantic council. How significant is this . It is going to take some time before we find out what really is happening here. Yes, president Blaise Campaore, who has been in power for 27 years, has resigned. ,ut the general, Honore Traore who announced himself as president. The constitution provides that if the president resigns the president of the national assembly, a quiet administrator, would take over. He has apparently been arrested, or at least put under house arrest. So the constitution is not being followed. Recenter military men in hours declare themselves leader. There is a power vacuum in a state that is critical to an entire security system. Given what is going on in mali, the ongoing problems in nigeria. How hopeful argue that the situation can be resolved quickly and peacefully . Hopeful much more yesterday when thenpresident campaore announced he would not seek another term and they would respect the constitution and call for an inclusive government of national unity. It was heralded by the International Community. But that was not enough. It was perhaps too late for the crowds and the mobs. Instead of, we have a peaceful transition we have a vacuum, and that is worrisome. A lot of people look at burkina faso and think, this is a relatively stable country. Why has this happened to now . Burkina faso has transformed tremendously in the quarter century the ousted president was in power. It went from a very Rural Society ouagadougou is today the fastest urbanizing center in africa itself to a very urban society. This is a landlocked Society Country with very few natural resources. There is a little mining going on. There are expectations today. Young people want more things. A tremendous amount of progress one has to knowledge, especially the last decade. The number of schools in the country has quadrupled. Women have acquired new freedoms and greater equality in the country. It was not happening fast enough. Is this going to Impact Investment . Depends on how the International Community chooses to interpret this takeover by whichever military leader. Top. Bumptop ends up on if it is declared a coup there could be a cutoff of all humanitarian assistance. Thank you. A Virgin Galactic spaceship has exploded and crashed in the california desert during a test flight, killing one and injuring another. Wreckage of spaceshiptwo is scattered across the mojave desert. The test flight was part of plans to send tourists to the edge of space next year. The crash comes after an unmanned rocket headed for the International Space station exploded just seconds after liftoff. I spoke with the chief astronomer at the Franklin Institute in philadelphia. It has been a bad week for commercial spaceflight. How big of a setback is this . One thing we have to keep in mind about this business chain is that there is a significant amount of risk involved. The risks can never be eliminated entirely. Anyone in the program at the National Level and also the Companies Involved understand that this sort of thing can happen. We always have to remember, particularly during launch or firing of any rocket motors, that all these machines are working at the extremes of temperature and pressure, and that presents all sorts of challenges and also all sorts of risks. So this is a bump in the road for both of these industries, both of these companies. It is called Rocket Science for a reason, isnt it . Is this an indication that perhaps tourists should not be going to space . What it actually means is that, since these are both start up at least Virgin Galactic is there is more testing that needs to be done. There is only stressing that needs to be done to drive the risk down to zero. It doesnt mean they should not be tourists heading to space. If we look at the simple analogy of how air flight began, we thought the same things in the early history of air flight. Research, experimentation, and plenty of mishaps and accidents causing loss of life. In this very infant business of taking people to space as tourists, we see a lot of the same sorts of things happening. But do you think things are moving too fast . These companies are under a lot of pressure to get these lights up and running. You could say they are under pressure to get the flights up and running. But in order for them to go forward, they have to meet the same stringent safety and security measures that nasa has had to adhere to for all the time it has been in the business of spaceflight. So its not as if they can cut corners and eliminate safety protocol or fly equipment that is not safe. They have to meet all the safety guidelines. This is a risky business. It is difficult. It is expensive, both financially and in terms of lives, it can be as well. The chief astronomer at the Franklin Institute, speaking to us from philadelphia. To west africa, where the World Health Organization has announced the death toll from the evil the outbreak has risen to more than 4950 Ebola Outbreak has risen to more than 4950. Countries are on high alert. People traveling from infected countries pose major risks to places like ghana. Some hospitals are seriously underprepared to cope with an outbreak. Hello . The megaphone has seen better days, but it is all the refugees here have. Has an announcer. The gates, the guard keeps a buthful eye, that he is he is not able to tell who was arriving from countries of the center of the outbreak. I do not know who is who, who is carrying the disease. Me now, maybe i have the disease and you dont know. They have been learning how to deal with ebola. They are concerned about new arrivals from affected countries. At the moment they are monitoring 11. We are monitoring most of the liberians, those living here and those in liberia. People coming and going out to liberia. They do not have personal protective equipment, but they have improvised. Gloves, boots, and raincoats. This is what proper protective gear looks like, but in some cases Health Care Workers have become infected while treating patients. The fastening, the exposed these are not manufactured with any high standards. They cannot guarantee protection against disease. Airlines as Airlines Stop flying and some countries close where this is if someone is identified as having ebola, Something Like that, we have a serious problem. Even though they do not share borders with any affected countries, the movement of people from the epicenter of the outbreak means it is at high risk. Bbc news. Afghanistans president has invited the taliban and to join in peace talks. Speaking in beijing, he moved away from his usual hardline approach and made direct reference to the insurgents who stepped up attacks aimed at bringing down his monthold government. Peace is our highest priority. We invite the political opposition, particularly the taliban, to enter in dialogue, and we ask all International Partners to support an afghan led peace process. For more on his comments in beijing, i spoke a short time ago with the former afghan ambassador to canada, who is now at the new america foundation. This is a change of tone, isnt it . How big of a step is it . It is a change, and it isnt. It is because in the first time in afghan leader is referring and pointing to the taliban directly and asking them to come and sit down and talk. At the same time, we have several years of hamid karzai behind us where he attempted also to bring the towel down to the table but failed. It is going to be very interesting to see how the two partners in this government will deal with reconciliation. Whether they are going to adopt a new strategy, take parts of the old strategy, or whether they will have something totally different. A mit is that you will see x. Theres going to be a lot of emphasis on what role a country such as pakistan will play in encouraging the taliban to come to the negotiating table. To you think he has been influenced by the escalation and number of attacks by the taliban . I dont think so. I believe everyone in afghanistan expected the taliban during the recently ended election. To increase their attacks. To move to the offensive. But they also expect to be taliban at some point to maybe wait and see. At this moment, the taliban and are trying to sort of spread their influence, to the extent that they can, across afghanistan. Not just one or two or three areas. To give the impression that they are larger than they really are. You mentioned pakistan. The president is now in china seeking new friends. Should america be concerned about that . I dont think so. I think the americans would like to see the chinese play a constructive and positive role in afghanistan, especially since they are close to the pakistani establishment. The afghans and americans would like to see china maybe nudge the pakistanis towards trying to convince the taliban to come and talk to the afghan government. You have just come back from afghanistan. Do you think the country is ready to go it alone now that the british and american troops are withdrawn . It has already been in a go it alone mode for a while. That is going to increase. But the afghans know very well it will continue to need assistance, both on the security front and on development in the economy, for some years to come. The former afghan ambassador to france. You are watching bbc world news america. Still to come, the reallife bear that inspired winnie the pooh a century after arriving in london. We have the story. Heavy rains have disrupted the search for scores of people feared buried in a landslide in central sri lanka. It is thought 100 people are still missing, and hopes of finding them alive are fading. This is a classroom and one of the schools that has been converted into a temporary shelter for the people affected by the landslide. There are people here who have lost their loved ones, even their homes. All around me you see stacks of pillows, mattresses, anything people can pull out of their homes before they were buried under the mud. I met a little boy and girl who lost both their parents in this disaster. That his mother sent her children away to safety and said they would collect their belongings and joined them, but before they could do that the mud was too quick. A woman told me how she grabbed her two children and ran to safety when she heard people screaming outside. Rescue operations have been very slow, because it has been raining incessantly over the past two days. The army said conditions are too dangerous to continue operations. Yesterday, no survivors or dead bodies were found. At this point, it is said the chances of finding survivors are slim. But there are conflicting numbers from everywhere, whether it is from ministers or Disaster Management or the villagers themselves. It is very hard to put a number on how many people are actually missing at this point. It is not just people directly affected. More people fearing landslides have gathered here to protect themselves. All these people will have a long wait to find any news on those who are missing, and also be returned to their homes and Start Building the lives. Mention winnie the pooh and many of us have fond memories of reading the adventures of the honeyloving their, but when did author aa milne get inspiration . 100 years ago a very special bear cub arrived in the london zoo from canada. Jon kay has the remarkable story of the reallife bear. It was 1914, and this tiny bear cub was brought across the atlantic by a canadian soldier on his way to fight in the great war. This is my greatgrandfather. She has come here to retrace his footsteps and the bears pop prints. He named her winnipeg, where he was from. A final visit to london zoo to remember harry, who survived the war, and winnie, whose story lives on. Back when winnie the pooh was published, printing was a completely different world. Greatnew technology, some traditions have been lost. For the last 30 years, john has been acquiring equipment from printing houses closing down.
