More information it can come out. In Los Angeles on results Tuesday is the day I do believe the 17th of December that is always to have you along everybody look I know there are days when we start with this corporate story or that and you probably say C'mon it's one lousy company how much of a difference can it really make I mean the American economy is in $1000.00 trillion dollar beast right. Well yes right but we bring you now the Boeing Company which yesterday as you know announced it's going to stop making for a while anyway it's fatally flawed $737.00 Max a problem yes for the company for its suppliers to about which more in a minute but also quite possibly a problem for that 19 trillion dollar beast the American economy this is Marketplace just in whole reports g.d.p. Growth could hit some Boeing induced turbulence before Boeing announces production halt its growing stockpile of undelivered 737 next planes have been boosting g.d.p. Says Tim Quinlan senior economist at Wells Fargo and so when they just simply stop making enough well that inventory boost goes away so without that both growth is now lower and the 1st quarter Quinlan estimates that the production hole could lower overall g.d.p. Growth by half a percent that's a small fraction of the overall u.s. Economy but Lou Tilley chief economist at Wilmington Trust says it's hard to imagine any other company having such an impact on growth Boeing is incredibly large obviously and has a lot of employees and the scale of the cutback here would be in the billions of dollars Boeing says the production haul is temporary and that it doesn't plan on laying off or furloughing the thousands of workers working on the $737.00 Max assembly lines Tom Darry c.e.o. Of the Institute for Supply Management says those workers have valuable skills Boeing doesn't want to lose in a competitive job market hanging on to the skilled workforce they have key strategic imperative for Boeing but if Boeing's production haul drags on Tim Quillin of Wells Fargo says furloughs and layoffs will be harder to avoid that would immediately impact paychecks but eventually it starts to pass through to the various suppliers for that factory and knock on effects to other industries that service those workers he says of workers end up getting furloughed or laid off everyone from parts manufacturers to the sandwich shop across the street would be contributing less. The g.d.p. In New York and just in how the marketplace so along those lines part of the reason Boeing is decision to suspend production of the 737 Max is going to resonate through a very big chunk of this economy is that its supply chain reaches through a very big chunk of this economy Marketplace's Jack Stewart is on that on the 737 Max might be a Boeing plane but the 35000 parts that go into it come from an estimated 600 other firms Boeing suppliers a modern aircraft is not produced by a single company and modern aircraft is really a global undertaking. The engines for example of built by c f m International that's a joint venture between General Electric and a French company and each of them has its own hundreds of suppliers Samuel angle covers aviation a global consultancy I c f the fuselage maybe built by spirit in the us the vertical pillars may be dealt in Japan or in China the landing here somewhere else spirits are a systems gets 80 percent of its revenue from Boeing as well as the fuselage it builds parts for wings and engines I contacted spirits and a handful of other suppliers a large and small as well as the trade groups but none wanted to talk Sean preach Nicky at Ohio State University's Center for Aviation Studies says supply is a busy figuring out how to slow or stop their own production there are significant hurdles to overcome when you start a production line in then you try to restart it later like inventory where you store the parts you can years how do you redeploy workers and in a worst case scenario how do you even keep them on the payroll and Boeing needs everyone ready to restart production says Kevin Michaels Ara dynamic advisory if there is a small supplier in Kansas that maybe makes a few parts of the aircraft that is in financial distress that can limit Boeing's ability to ramp up in a statement Boeing says it will work with suppliers to minimize disruption in an effort to keep its global so. Intact for Marketplace Here's another company grounding some of its planes nothing mechanical though strictly financial delivery giant Fed Ex reported a Bismillah quarterly profits after the bell today down almost 40 percent 40 percent global trade woes higher costs and a falling out with Amazon are the proximate causes share prices tumbled after hours modest gains though on the major indices during the regular session we'll have the details when we do the numbers. We've been following a couple or 3 retailers this holiday season small businesses all of them in different parts of the country to see how this their most important couple of months of the year are going up we 1st heard from them back in November just before Black Friday we did our 2nd round of check ins this week and 1st up an e-commerce retailer not too far from Marketplace world headquarters here in l.a. Who's coming up on a critical deadline. To go got on the founder and. I think from now up until the 18th they're going to be our busiest days just because of where you have to hit the u.s. Cut off times for shipping for these orders to arrive by Christmas my 2 little brothers are coming to help me this week and I'm putting Be Happier our office still looks like a hot mess but times 10 I think there's a lot of packages coming in and out every day so we're trying to stay as organized as possible but it's. She does e-commerce here in Los Angeles a couple more check ins in a couple more minutes. We're still a pretty long ways from knowing exactly what's in that phase one trade deal the White House worked out with Beijing but one of the key things President Trump kept saying as that deal was on again off again and again was that his terrasse were hurting China more than they were hurting the United States and the china has lost manufacturing jobs as a direct result of the trade war 3000000 of them the actual figure according to the Chinese government is $3800000.00 manufacturing jobs lost in urban parts of that country last year because of the tariffs though not entirely says our China correspondent Jennifer Pak. He. Is in good spirits now but a few days ago he fainted at work on the factory floor he manufactures screws for golf clubs for the u.s. Market. I work nights but I'm too old for that I have trouble falling asleep during the day time so my body couldn't handle it it's a far cry from his previous job at the United shoe factory which manufactures u.s. Brands like Red Wing shoes there he worked the day shift then last year he was laid off his shoe factory moved to Cambodia. I heard the company is offering a salary of 800 un a month in Cambodia whereas our salaries are 5 times more his job is among the 3000000 President Trump says were lost because of the u.s. Tariffs now Chinese government statistics do confirm a drop in manufacturing jobs but employment in factories has been shrinking since 2015 long before the u.s. Tariffs were in place work early June. We heard from factory managers that our company wanted to move out of China starting a few years ago the United shoe factory did not respond to our interview requests but manufacturers say the rising cost of wages raw materials and rent are some of the top reasons they're looking to leave the u.s. Tariffs may have just sped up their exit plan we'll by next. Week way the end was also laid off by the United shoe factory but she was not left empty handed and the main thing that I received some compensation from the factory and also unemployment benefits but that's not enough for her to stop working even though she is 51 a year older than the official retirement age for women China has a pension system but for years employers could get away without paying into it so even though legally and work for 18 years her employer has not contributed enough for her to receive it. Unless she pays in a few $1000.00 more than my money which she tells me she doesn't have. Even with the social welfare system you still need big savings in China at the start we told you that worker Lee sent June had a fainting spell well he stayed at the hospital for a few days and. Their health insurance covered some of the cost but I was too scared to stay longer and checked out early I still had to pay $3000.00 where and that's about $400.03 weeks of his current salary the Sangean says he's lucky to have found another job factory work has helped him put his children through college and build a new house plus. My wife and I have helped our 2 sons pay for their weddings and put down payments on their 1st homes but at what cost. To give his family a better life both he and his wife had to travel 700 miles from their village in central province to work in factories they left their children behind when they were just a few years old almost And then one man. Today his wife may laugh when she calls their daughter but she says they're not close you again have them is a thing apart from our children for 2 decades our relationship has suffered even though he called and wrote letters to them regularly still she has fallen memories of working for the United shoe factory which she says was a good employer not an easy thing to find now says her husband but he doesn't blame the factory for leaving China. The boss wasn't making money the factories closure he says is just business in Junction City I'm Jennifer Pak from Marketplace let's do a little calendaring here if we might the house is set to impeach President Trump at some point the next couple of days as you know then probably 2nd week of January or so the Senate trial is going to start and you know what happens then right your public radio station. Is going to preempt us to cover that trial gavel to gavel but that does not mean you have to miss us one word people pod cast doesn't matter where you get it just get it because the economy does not wait you know. This is Marketplace I'm always here at Marketplace been a whole lot of time keeping track of financial news and there is always and I mean literally always some article or piece of click bait promise you the secrets of retirement how to have $3000000.00 in the bank by $65.00 no matter how much you make today or some such so with that in mind give a listen to today's installment of our series My economy My name is Janet Johnson and I'm 63 years old Avlon a small business in Raleigh North Carolina now days I read everything I can about retirement and finances and. I never did before because it was just too boring but never now I need to know this stuff and I'm realizing that I don't even know what I don't know. You know as I've learned about things like under some conditions you don't get Social Security if you have a state pension and so I've got to learn about that and I wonder what else do I not know that I don't know so I don't know how to research it so. I would like to say class of here's everything that you need to know. My husband will be 65 on his next birthday so we're getting all these advertisements for dinners we can go to in l. Teach is all about retirement and I had a friend go to one of those and then totally make bad decisions based on advice that they gave or I have several people who I can ask financial questions but they answer over my head in ways that I don't understand what they're saying and I'll just tell me things like Be sure to be inflation averse and I'm like wow I don't you know I sort of know that that's important but I don't know what you mean like how do you be inflation averse and then they'll tell me to do something that I don't know what it means and so I figure Ok and then I go home and Google inflation numbers and you know see what can I learn about what that means I don't feel like I quite have it completely figured out yet but I feel pretty good about the fact that I think we are to the point where we are but will be able to pay our bills and eat and get car repairs done and we'll have health insurance. I figure I've got a couple years to actually understand it all I'll just be super conservative until I do understand it. And now I'm trying to navigate Medicare and I think what did and make me and used to say on this boring commercials when we were kids. On the thing if you or someone you know is about to turn 65 and I would quit listening. Janet Johnson there she is in Raleigh North Carolina we cannot do this series without your help everybody should take a 2nd wouldn't let us know what is happening in your economy there's a place you can do it at Marketplace. There are stories told along the southern border of immigration and human rights abuses of hardship and of risk taking nothing really positive at all here though is a moment of opportunity driven admittedly by financial necessity the high and rising cost of college is real and it's everywhere but as Madge Rivlin meddler of key p.b.s. Reports some Southern California students have found another option. Rebecca Young is an archer of Vasquez carpool together most days at 7 am to cross the border to go to college these American students both went to high school in San Diego and are business majors. As they approach the u.s. Border with Mexico there's barely a line on his usually makes the trip from San Diego to her school in Mexico in half an hour hard sometimes kind of stressful just make a list of the problems at the border but besides that it's been Ok so far. Both are students at such a private university with 3 campuses close to the border one in 2 Quanah one in Mexicali and a 3rd and Sonata along the coast after of the 2008 financial crisis administrators at SETI speed gain are seeing an uptick in the number of American students crossing the border into Mexico to get their degrees Fernando Leone Garcia said he's president historically we've had on and off families with some links to Mexico however as a result of some complications within California in terms of Troy cos accessibility it all of us became a popular and increasingly frequent incident in-state tuition for the u.c. System runs about $14000.00 a year to issue at Cal State is about half that but many schools in the cow state system now require that students live on campus their 1st year that can cost about $10000.00 annual tuition at such East which has no housing requirement is just under $12000.00. Such as became the 1st university in Mexico to get accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and colleges in 2012 that's the same accreditation held by the California State University system if you have accreditation then you have a certain level of quality that people look for there are currently 337 students at SETI Sue graduated from Southern California high schools that's up from just 50 in 2010 last year the university launched a business program exclusively in English the 1st of its kind in Pa The university is located in an area surrounded by Nakia dot us multinational companies with factories along the border so collaboration with multinational industries and therefore employee ability all of these are factors have some impact in terms of the students decisions to come here Vasquez and Yana say they have to deal with some pushback from friends and relatives when they decided to study in Mexico that's just started out at a community college in San Diego before transferring to cities for its business program he says his parents disagreed with this decision and their original response was Well we already live and send you away don't you study here you know you already know the system you've been here. For your whole life a year and he doesn't regret studying in Mexico both students plan on working in the border region where they hope their cross border experience at such East will be an advantage and I'm actually now Adler from Marketplace. We've heard throughout the program from a couple of different retailers one whose business is still pretty fresh one who's been running he's for more than 40 years and we close out our short term with somebody in the middle of New England chocolatier in business with her husband for a decade. My name is Kristen Tal Hi working on him and his Dean's sweets in Portland Maine and the time is 2 o'clock on Monday afternoon December 16th our business is very busy right now it's kind of I think of it as the nexus of when everything's happening at once so we still have corporate orders we have website orders that are still coming in and people walking into the store in a couple of days the corporate orders and the website orders will stop because we're really will be outside of that zone where we can ship things and have them arrive before Christmas so that will slow down a little bit which is actually kind of nice because it's a little bit of a relief that right now it's it's really probably the busiest days of the year for us that was christened him in Portland Maine we're going to check back in with her and Pattie Delgado and Gary Merriman one last time after New Year's to see how their retail season. This final note on the way out today the news and then an observation the House passed a $1.00 trillion dollar spending package today it'll take the government through the end of the fiscal year next October the 1st which is great because there won't be a holiday shutdown threat the Senate's got and now the president probably I guess is going to sign it but think about this for a 2nd 1.4 trillion dollars in spending voted on today in a deal that was reached last night I know this is the way things always go but really. News I'm Jeremy Siegel the House of Representatives is set to vote tomorrow on 2 articles of impeachment against President from for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress but before that moves forward the parameters of tomorrow's vote must be decided by the House Rules Committee and lawmakers on that committee have been debating the process today among them is East Bay Congressman Mark to Sonia who we have on the line from Washington Congressman dystonia thanks so much for joining us my pleasure thanks for asking so this is all a little bit confusing today sort of seems like a vote on how to vote what exactly is being decided in this hearing well legislative bodies in the United States state legislatures and the Congress has a rules committee both the thousands and when bills are resolutions are introduced they go to the rules generally to be referred either to the floor of the committee of jurisdiction in this instance the impeachment process we did. First vote on the rules to define the Intelligence Committee's report and then it would go to judiciary and then come back to us so today is really to talk about both what's transpired which we've spent 90 percent of the time last 6 hours talking about and . Disagreement about process and then what will happen tomorrow or how long the debate will be much each one of which will come towards the end of today's hearing and speaking to reporters today the president called this a witch hunt a claim you've been making throughout this process and also noted that he has you know major support in the Senate a Republican majority that's almost certainly going to shoot this down when it comes to ban if the Senate isn't going to consider this seriously what's the point from your perspective of moving forward with impeachment. I swore an oath I believe being a member of Congress like being the president but more so you have to adhere to the Constitution the Constitution is what's kept America being America for all the good things of the trials we've gone through the longest running democracy in the history world we've had problems in our Constitution but we've had amendments to change that we got rid of slavery gave one of the right to vote to go we've tried to protect the boat for all citizens so that's the way to govern when I read the Constitution when I read the founders when I read the Federalist Papers I think I have to also go to conscience go to movies impeachment articles to the Senate and then the Senate will have to do it as in the country and history will judge yourself you mentioned the long history of this country's democracy today's hearing is historic in its own right the 1st time Articles of Impeachment have been considered by the rules committee before going to the house tomorrow's expected vote of course will also be historic just the 3rd ever impeachment of a president how do you think you yourself and the country at large will look back on this moment. Well I'm hopeful we've been through difficult times of this country before we have been through a civil war revolution the Great Depression the Teapot Dome scandal we've been through tough times so. When you put it next on checks I think we will endure but it's really up to all of us as citizens to hold all electives accountable to a very high standard and I don't I don't think this president understands us I mean remember that he holds the same office that Washington held the same office that Honest Abe held I don't think even Republicans will try to defend his on the city or his integrity so I I'm hopeful we'll get through this I do think that our institutions and held up to the attacks from this president but what I'm really afraid of is when the Senate quit soon he will go further and that's going to be really dangerous territory because I think what he's already done is very dangerous territory eastbay Congressman Mark to Sonia joining us from Capitol Hill thanks so much for your time let's leisure and Jeremy Siegel This is k.q.e.d. News I'm Audie Cornish and I'm Ari Shapiro Washington is full of negotiating spinning and finger pointing before the expected House vote on impeachment tomorrow if Democrats have the votes as expected a Senate trial will follow in January today Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected Democratic leader Chuck Schumer's request for witnesses in a Senate trial I'll shows this road it's their duty to investigate it is their duty to make the very I bar for undoing a national election Schumer was hoping to get White House officials that refused to participate in the House to testify in the Senate meanwhile President Trump sent a long letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi objecting to the impeachment process in it he accused Democrats of interfering in America's elections and subverting America's democracy in the Senate a team of House Democrats known as impeachment managers will present the case against President Trump 2 decades ago Chris Cannon was one of the impeachment managers in the case against President Bill Clinton and the former Republican congressman from Utah joins us now welcome Hello what is the job description of an impeachment manager Well it's kind of vague and depends a great deal on the Senate in the rules they set that piece of managers essentially a prosecutor a guy resents a criminal case or a litigator who presents a case in the civil situation and how much guidance does the Constitution actually give about the role of these managers almost 0 Ok there is a requirement that it go to the Senate if the president is impeached for a trial and the House managers are in charge of of how they present the material in the Senate Ok So Congress has a lot of freedom to set the rules here and we're already hearing some rumblings about what this might look like in the New Year in the Senate with President Trump compare that to what you experienced 20 years ago with President Clinton one of the fascinating differences today is that in the case of the impeachment of Bill Clinton. The Senate decided to set rules and what that a sense of became was a question answer situation where senators asked questions and the managers answered those questions and then the defense team for the president also answered those questions so there's no presentation of a case you're just kind of q. And I personally found it ridiculous you found it ridiculous by ridiculous because a trial actually has meaning in the able American constitutional system that means that you visit witnesses that the defendant has the right to confront those witnesses and that you have examination cross examination presentation of evidence and then a decision in this case all you had were random questions from people who were embarrassed about the underlying issues embarrassed because it was sexual in nature yeah right as opposed to the crimes which were alleged and which got very little mention and you could have 3 possible outcomes a trial which is basically a debate and a vote that may result in no presentation of evidence at the other extreme you'd have a full trial where you would have witnesses and examination by the managers and then cross-examination by the president and then witnesses called by the president and cross-examined by the managers and all the issues that of the president is convinced vindicate him would probably come out and that is probably. A risky process and so I suspect that it's going to be something less than that but it's up to the senators to decide several of the people who manage Clinton's impeachment went on to much higher profile roles in politics if a friend asked you for advice on whether or not to take a job like this what would you tell them. I think this is going to be a really miserable experience for a Democrat impeachment manager because they're going to be subject to the regulations of of the Senate and I don't think those are going to be favorable to even the most eloquent and articulate of prosecutors That's former Republican congressman if you talk Chris Cannon he was an impeachment manager in the trial of President Bill Clinton thank you very much a pleasure my friend it took 7 decades after World War 2 to put together a system of free trade around the world that system has been rocked in just the last 7 days the president today announced what he's calling a phase one trade deal with China the 2 sides are very close on a deal on u.s.m.c. And you could see that analogous Johnson hoped his victory would bring closure to the breadth of debate and let the healing begin on both sides of the Atlantic populous leaders are challenging long established notions of how trade should be conducted President Trump and u.k. Prime minister Porus Johnson are winning praise for their efforts in some quarters but also raising questions about unintended fallout N.P.R.'s Scott Horsley reports President Trump notched wins on 2 fronts in his trade war last week congressional Democrats okayed an updated version of a trade pact with Mexico and Canada and China agreed to a preliminary deal of its own trade representative Robert lite hisor told c.b.s. Long months at the negotiating table all came together at once Friday was probably the most momentous day in trade history ever both deals purport to foster cross border trade but they also include protectionist measures and to get their trunk put up road blocks ordering stiff tariffs against Canada Mexico and China those countries retaliated so farmers and manufacturers have paid a price for the trade war but White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow insisted to Fox News it was all worth it it does show that President Trump's example of being a tough. Hardnosed bargainer on trade and economic matters works an ocean away Boris Johnson is pushing his own hard nosed agenda insisting after last week's election that the u.k. Will pull out of the European Union No if buts or maybe it's economist Matthew Slaughter who served in the George w. Bush White House sees a common thread between Johnson and Trump we have leaders today saying that they want to be connected to the world but only on terms that they dictate and only according to the criteria for what constitutes winning and with a lot of threats that 0 sum approach is it augurs with the rules based international order that the u.s. Spent decades helping to build Johnson and Sean have little regard for that order while Johnson is bent on withdrawing from the e.u. Trump is kneecapping the World Trade Organization just last week the president blocked the ability to referee trade disputes with no referee Trump is freer to follow his own protectionist instincts slapping tariffs on friends and foes alike former trade representative Carla Hill says when other countries follow that example the global economy suffers therefore all going to go out you know laterally and just impose tariffs it's going to have friction and friction can explode to be sure freer trade hasn't worked equally well for everyone while some industries have thrived with access to global markets others have suffered from overseas competition Slaughter who's now at Dartmouth says populist leaders like Trump and Johnson may be well intentioned in catering to those who feel hurt by globalization but he suggest protectionist trade agreements and to withdraw from Global Engagement are not the answers most people don't want just walls they get the globalization in general is good what they really want our bridges that will build ladders of opportunity at the same time so people would have a chance to thrive and benefits from all the dynamism of innovation and globalization the last 7 days have exposed deep crap. X. In the global trading system the months to come will show whether those cracks can be repaired or if the system is bound to crumble under populist pressure Scott Horsley n.p.r. News Washington. Forming on the play and Foreman as the head of the Chicago Police Board that's a group that will recruit interview and ultimately select 3 finalists to present to Chicago mayor Laurie Lightfoot the board got an earful from regular Chicagoans So what they do we want to make sure is that this process is an adult show because the mayor isn't the only one they don't like being lied to our community just like be alive to Eric Rosser was like many in the city who have strong feelings about the Chicago Police Department mayor Laurie Lightfoot who campaigned on police reform is another she fired former superintendent Eddie Johnson just weeks before he was to retire saying he lied to her about an incident where police found him asleep at the wheel of a running car 3 years ago like it would lead the police board when former mayor Rahm Emanuel fired Johnson's predecessor he also rejected the police board's recommendation sense elected Johnson as superintendent whoever Lightfoot selects to lead the department next will be the city's 3rd superintendent since 2011 Renee Collins says that person should come from the outside the culture in the Chicago Police Department is so corrupt that this point. Cannot change them but glad it's true Anderson a retired law enforcement officer favors the inside track the superintendent 1st of all has to come up to the rights they know what's happening out there the next Chicago police superintendent will have to take on some big challenges and entrenched problems prolific gun violence in some neighborhoods a lack of trust between residents and police plus he or she will have to work under a consent decree designed to overhaul the entire department that came as a result of widespread protest over. Or a police shooting of a black teenager which led to the firing of the police superintendent at the time and a Department of Justice investigation I'd like to see a superintendent that has heart Robert Beekman a pastor says honesty and integrity are key for any police superintendent but Hart he says is just as important somebody who connects with community which has been failing in some of our previous superintendents Chuck Wexler is the head of the Police Executive Research Forum it's a police think tank based in Washington that keeps track of the reform efforts here and in other cities Wexler says just like in New Orleans in Baltimore a new Chicago superintendent might find that consent decree is not just a challenge but an opportunity to rebuild the city's police department for example changing use of force policies that require new training new technology all sorts of things that a department might not get and while the Chicago police board continues to ask people what they want in a superintendent the board is also reaching out to potential candidates locally and across the country anyone looking to turn around a big city police department has until mid January to get an application in Cheryl Corley n.p.r. This is All Things Considered from n.p.r. News I'm Ari Shapiro And I'm Audie Cornish more than 5000 years ago a woman in Scandinavia chewed on a piece of birch rudimentary chewing gum of sorts that as N.P.R.'s Merrit Kennedy reports has proven to be a remarkable source of ancient d.n.a. This dark little blob of birch pitch would be pretty easy to overlook at an archaeological site essentially it's a black brown substance that was obtained by heating birch bark but Hunnish Schroeder a paleo geneticist at the University of Copenhagen says a student coming from the site brought it to him with a question can we get d.n.a. Out of this and you know you well know we haven't really tried it so let's give it a go people in the stone age would chew the substance and use it as a form of glue to put sharp points on to weapons they may have also used it as a kind of medicine so these were clues that it might contain d.n.a. But the researchers expected it to be difficult to extract it's still quite challenging to get you know a complete ancient human genome from human remains the d.n.a. Sequencing went better than they could have ever expected they were able to reconstruct a complete human genome Shorter's has is the 1st time that an entire ancient human genome has been extracted from anything other than human bones or teeth the team published their findings in the journal Nature Communications and the d.n.a. Tells us a lot about this woman who lived about 5700 years ago she had this really you know striking combination of stark hair and dark skin and blue eyes Schroeder's has those features were common to other hunter gatherers in this area at the time which is now an island in Denmark he says that even though farmers were beginning to settle in northern Europe the woman's d.n.a. Does not show any traces of Farmer ancestry and even beyond her d.n.a. The scientists were also able to extract ancient microbes from her mouth they were sealed in the ancient gum they found traces of a virus and they also extracted remnants of what could have been the. Last meal duck and hazelnuts shirt says it's unique to have d.n.a. Traces of microbes and clues about diet all from a single individual it's really you know the rich picture from this kind of conspicuous small lump of birch fries and her fruit molecular archaeologist Christina Warner says she thinks it was incredibly creative to try to recover information from the ancient chewing gum and the finds has a lot about her field right now as our technology that we're using gets stronger we're starting to realize that much more of the past is preserved and we ever thought she recently tried analyzing chewed up stems from a cave in Mexico though unfortunately little information was preserved as technology has dramatically improved mourner says scientists should try to test more objects for d.n.a. That they find on archaeological sites gives me inspiration they go out and start looking for more of these unusual contexts in which we might find interesting information a pretty story legacy for a piece of gum Merrit Kennedy n.p.r.
