A Sunday full of protest on the football field came a day after President Trump on invited the basketball champs Golden State Warriors from visiting the White House this February cuties Alex Helmick explains it's customary for a championship team in a major sport to visit the White House shake hands with the president give him an honorary Jersey but before the Warriors even won it all last year there were questions with this team even want to. Is it with this president after some of them openly disagreed with Trump on a series of issues on Friday superstar Steph Curry said he didn't want to go out a day later Trump tweeted that he was revoking the invitation in a statement a team spokesman said they'll use the trip to d.c. Science at 822 this morning here on k.q.e.d. Now to the weather forecast where we're looking for sunny skies and warm temperatures today the highs ranging from the low eighty's along the coast to the low ninety's and 7 minutes past says his Morning Edition from n.p.r. News good morning I'm David Greene and I'm Mary Louise Kelly and we begin this hour in Berlin or going to talk to our co-host Rachel Martin who is there reporting on the German elections Morgan Mary Louise indeed Germans have gone to the polls and they have elected Chancellor Angela Merkel to her 4th term in office so in many ways this election was about stability about staying the course with one glaring exception for the 1st time in 60 years a right wing political party will sit in Germany's parliament this is the nationalist immigration hardliners there called the a.f.d. Stands for alternative for Deutschland I think not only upset me we think we have seen an earthquake today political. That's George the he's the chair of the at the party here in Berlin and I spoke to him last night not far from where we're broadcasting right now right next to the Brandenburg Gate in my opinion we will have a huge impact because for the 1st time a real. Years. It's a year. It's a migration and. Questions and has to do something we will drive her we will drive her he says indicating that he will push her his party will push in the direction of their policies here with me now to talk about the repercussions of this N.P.R.'s Berlin correspondent Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson who joins me on this overcast Berlin typically Berlin Day Hi Soraya Good morning Rachel so we heard the f.t. Berlin party chair there describing this as a political earthquake is it well it certainly should things up I mean he did siphon off voters from Chancellor Merkel's conservative base which had its worst showing in a federal election since 949 and she and other mainstream politicians are now at each other's throats to try and reconnect with his German electorate that they feel have lost that's apparently shifted to the right but it's also to remember that the polls show that this was largely a protest vote and that the a.f.p. Support could evaporate pretty quickly how is Merkel responded to the rise of the f.d.a. Now that they're in Parliament have secured this well she has acknowledged that this is a very bittersweet victory on that she will be basically going after them with hard facts in in harsh confrontations and the a.f.p. Has been basically telling her bring it on so it's going to be quite nasty I think at times in Parliament All right we're going to bring in another voice into the conversation and she is cool Brown she is a writer based in Hamburg Germany her grandparents immigrated to Germany with the wave of Turkish workers in the 1960 s. Cooper thank you so much for being with us thank you for having me and what's your reaction to the election results of past. Expected to get into the parliament and also the number it was not surprising what was actually shocking and scary was the way the f.t. Politicians have been talking after their results where they clad and you could just see there was so much pride and so much anger as well and the way they sat that they will chase them they will chase them and they will take the people back the retore basically just show that what we're going to experience the next 4 years is going to be worse than what we have been experiencing the last couple of months where the right will be tarred basically dominated the mainstream narrative so what concerns you most when you talk about things will get worse in the next 4 years what is your concern Well I think that many people will feel legit to mice to actually also be violent on the streets because when words have huge or immediate impact on the actions of people and that is one fear I have you're talking about people who have been vocal against immigration and yes if you are from and we also have seen arise and how people have been attacked on the streets and I think that might actually be another development that we have to have an eye on but what also concerns me is all the other topics that basically will not be discussed now and the like. For instance how for instance education but also our welfare all of these topics are tangible to people and they have immediate impact on their lives but the right wing populist have shaped our mainstream narrative in a way that we've only been talking about immigration Islam refugees 70 percent all was what has been discussed in the t.v. Debate between Choice America Schultz was the front runner for the s.p.d. Yes I met her at the chancellor basically was about these topics completely neglected all of the other topics that are important to us Well let me ask you you say that if he is one in that they have they have shapes they have framed this. This election and and the debate of immigration they say specifically and I want to ask you about this Muslims belong to Germany Islam does not how do you interpret that while this debate has been along for many years and I find it very destructive to even pose that question why would you question. A religion to geographic space and basically that these destructive debates have basically shaped how we have been discussing immigrants in our country how we've been discussing Muslims in our country and just the diversity and I responding to a question like doesn't Germany the answer could be no is destructive bringing up the question and what we need to mind by responding to them right when populists have been very effective in provoking the rest of the country and having all of us being appalled and then having all of these lengthy baits about their questions not them actually posing our own agenda and talking about the topics that shape our lives and are important to us. Is a blogger and a writer from Hamburg She joined us here in our studios in Berlin talking about the election results there in Germany where they have the right wing party has secured enough votes to have a seat in Parliament the 1st time the right party will have achieved in German history in the last 60 years we also heard from N.P.R.'s Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson. Here in the United States Football Sunday felt different yesterday even non sports fans were riveted watching how n.f.l. Teams responded to President Trump he called Friday for players to be fired if they kneeled in protest or in the national anthem yesterday many players who aren't in the habit of kneeling did so several teams linked arms in a show of unity and a few including the Pittsburgh Steelers decided as a team to skip the anthem here Steelers coach Mike Tomlin on c.b.s. Is a very divisive times for our country and you know for us we're not going to be divided by anything by anyone that's the thing that I posted to our guys is that if you feel a need to do anything to be supportive of that as Americans you have the right but whatever we do we want to do 100 percent we can do together together that we should say one Steeler who's a former Army Ranger did come out side a tunnel just off the field to stand for the anthem Jesse Washington a senior writer with the sports and culture website the undefeated He joins us from member station say in Pittsburgh. Good morning so what image stood out to you yesterday I know you were at the game in Philadelphia right. Yes. When the anthem played and as his it is his practice Malcolm Jenkins the cornerback who's been protesting for the past year or so stood with a raise fist several other players stood with a raise fist their white teammate Chris Long stood near them with a hand on the shoulder in support but the image that really stuck with me was the owner of the team Jeffrey Lurie who was on the sideline he locked arms with other players and with police and military members Jeff Lurie was there to support what Malcolm Jenkins and Chris Long were doing to support the right of his players to protest and his statement said a lot when he mentioned that our players are working to improve our community because that's what the protest is really about it's not about we don't like the anthem it's about we're trying to change our community so for the owner of an n.f.l. Franchise to throw his support behind protesting players to me was a big moment perhaps in concert with other owners who did support of things perhaps a turning point in this whole issue Ok And you're talking about the Philadelphia Eagles there and their owner and players but say is it because I mean mention other teams to the same thing what he called a turning point when you see this is a turning point. For one the critical mass of players that were out there if you take out labor strikes from pro sports this may have been the biggest mass protest for social justice in pro sports history so the number of players who stood up the number of front office executives of owners of entire teams who may not have protested themselves but who supported the players' rights to process who said we're trying to make a change for our community I thought that was really important is that I mean you have interviewed fans on both sides of this some of them telling you that they essentially agree with what the president says that these protests are disrespectful to the flag and the anthem there were some booing yesterday as players were kneeling could this cause a rift between the n.f.l. And a big chunk of its audience. I think the rift was already there it could widen it between the fans who are already against these protests who are unsympathetic to the causes that the players are trying to bring to light so let's not get too happy about what happened yesterday and think that the problem is solved and everything's going to be cooled by yeah let's see how the owners react when the ratings come in for this week and next week's ratings could very well fall off a cliff because players fans rather are upset with the players are doing but at least some owners have decided to side with Unity unequality and things are going to change here in the n.f.l. All right Jesse Washington is a senior writer with The Undefeated we appreciate joining us Jesse thank you. This is n.p.r. News let's talk about California's numbers for a moment it's about 900 miles long 250 miles wide more than 163000 square miles it's 1st in the country in g.d.p. 1st in population 220000000000 dollars worth of government spending comes from California 40000000 people in our state driving the stories behind those numbers I'm John suppose that if you give us a minute's we'll give you the voices behind those numbers each morning on the California report from k.q.e.d. Players who protested President Trump racism and police brutality yesterday follow a practice started by former San Francisco $49.00 ers quarterback Collin capper Nick a year ago Kaffir Nick said he knelt during the national anthem because of the oppression of people of color among other issues a group of Oakland Raiders did the same yesterday as did hundreds of players some coaches even owners and for the 1st time a major league baseball player knelt during the anthem again he plays for a Bay Area team opened catcher Bruce Maxwell took a knee in all of those protests came after President Trump uninvited the Golden State Warriors from visiting the White House for a look at how Bay Area athletes have influenced what's become a major political issue in 3 pro sports we're joined by Daniel Durban He's a professor at u.s.c. And director of the school's Annenberg Institute of sports media and society thanks for joining us Professor good morning Ron thank you for having me so what we saw on Sunday was this significant show of protest on the football field it started last year with Colin Kaepernick he is not employed by an in f.l. Team and frankly that was the big protest around the n.f.l. Before the president made his comments now that so many football players employed his active civil dissed demonstration what happens to Caprona. Well that's a good question you know the complaint about Caprona before or after his protest and over the summer was that he would be brought into an n.f.l. Team probably as a 2nd string quarterback and as a 2nd string quarterback the simple distraction of his protests would take eyes away from the primary quarterback and cause dissension in the clubhouse and cause all sorts of other problems Well now that's kind of out the window because we now have a number of players protesting and we have players and owners being sort of put into a corner to choose whether or not they're going to stand up and protest with cap or Nick and with the n.f.l. As a body or if they're going to side with the president and damn people for engaging in free speech and so there's a it's a challenging position for everyone in the n.f.l. But it's one that certainly puts Caprona come back into the heart of the values of the n.f.l. No 49 or c.e.o. Jed York called Trump's comments over the weekend callous inoffensive and contradictory to what this country stands for he's one of the many football coaches to issue similar statements have we ever witnessed this kind of unity between owners and coaches even players when it comes to politics. Well we've never seen owners and players under fire so directly from politics you know the previous issue with the n.f.l. That's a serious issue and remains one of those concussions and the danger to players but that in some respects that's ownership apart from players because players are the exploited athletes in the ownership are the ones who are using them for financial gain and so there's a tension in that conversation as the conversation was able to be much more unified because you had the president of the United States directly attacking athletes and the athletes are the bread and butter for the n.f.l. The it's the star power of the athletes their celebrity and their elite athletic ability that the n.f.l. Sells to audiences the n.f.l. Had to in many respects side with its athletes and so everybody was kind of as I said before backed into a corner by the president's statements and I want to jump over to baseball now where a catcher Bruce Maxwell took a need twice over the weekend here he is talking to reporters about his decision my decision coming for a long time you know I know I was on the fence about it because you know nobody in baseball has ever done it and so you know I finally got to the point where you know I saw the inequality of a man is being discussed in Spain Frakt as you know from the our president so how will Maxwell's act be viewed in the history of the intersection of sports politics and civil rights. Well at the moment Maxwell is following along with what the n.f.l. Players have done so he's not a striking the figures calling capper Nick it's interesting that he's also taking the stand with another Bay Area team it does seem that the Bay Area has has a forum for discussion that may be more open than elsewhere but he is moving the conversation into Major League Baseball which of course has been historically a very conservative organization and has tended to build its its audience off of its history in the stalls are for the past so distracting in that sense that it is in baseball but time will tell what kind of effect he has whether other players will start taking a knee or if this will be a single isolated player who was who is making an individual statement. So we can talk about the Warriors now because I think earlier than everyone else we were hearing about the Warriors being uninvited to the White House didn't sound like a lot of them wanted to go in the 1st place and I guess it was that hesitation that triggered Trump's tweet so that invitations out the window the Warriors have actually blazed trails in so many ways so how is the nation viewing this back and forth between the basketball team of the Bay Area and the White House. Well they call it a left coast for a reason I guess the back and forth I think the Warriors back and forth with the White House are something that was brewing for some time and I don't think it is a striking as the the major statements over the weekend with the n.f.l. And the fact that the president actually used the term s.o.b about players and a rally I think that was much more striking and much more powerful the Warriors have long stood for certainly under the current ownership of long served for values of diversity in a quick city that's kind of been their part of their brand. Facing the the kind. Of language that the president has used this weekend it's little wonder that they would be wanting to bow out or be at least certainly uncomfortable with engaging in a dialogue over this really engaging in a photo op would be a better term for it so you know that tension was already there you know launched initially by the president's statements at the rally on Friday night and then by his constant tweeting Saturday morning things went from bad to worse and worse to the point that he disinvited them and they more or less folks said that they were quite comfortable being disinvited All right that's Daniel Durban He's a professor at u.s.c. Director of the school's Annenberg Institute of sports media and society thanks so much for joining us Professor Durban. Thank you and I'm Brian Watt You're listening to Morning Edition on k.q.e.d. News I'm Mary Louise Kelly and I'm David Greene the United States flew warplanes just east of North Korea over the weekend bombers have flown near this area before but the Pentagon said it was the farthest north of the demilitarized zone. Any u.s. Fighter has flown in the 21st century according to the Pentagon the move demonstrates that President Trump quote has many military options to defeat any threat Robert Daly is here he's a former diplomat and director of the Kissinger Institute on China and the u.s. At the Wilson Center thanks for coming back on we appreciate it pleasure to be here that sounds dramatic from the u.s. Government is it as dramatic as they make it sound it's really not terribly dramatic the United States has all sorts of military assets in East Asia Pacific North Korea knows this China knows this flying a little bit further north doesn't really give either Kim Jong un or Xi Jinping information they don't already have this is the kind of escalation a demonstration that you carry out when you don't really want to escalate you want to remind remind Ok so there's there's no real shock value then maybe if you do this I mean we've gotten to the point where these military leaders I mean they're I mean these leaders Trump and leader North Korea send all these messages back and forth it sounds so bellicose What is the purpose of this if you're president there's there is shock value with Kim Jong un decides if he wants to claim to be shocked he like President Trump has made very strong statements to his own people statements that almost obligate him to take further action so he can use this if he wants to say you see the United States is determined to destroy us I Kim Jong un and your only defense and therefore you need my further support and it also reminds China that the United States has a tremendous number of military assets and the ability to increase them in the area should it so choose which is what China most wants to avoid remember when these planes fly east of the Korean Peninsula they are flying in the Yellow Sea very close to China and what it calls its near seas and that's part of the messaging as well Ok if that's part of the messaging if you're President Trump what are you trying to get China to do here you want China to change its cost benefit analysis and to realize that if it doesn't bring North Korea in line and there are serious questions about whether China can do that at all that the United States and its allies will strengthen their alliance and May. They're deployments in the region which increases America status as the most powerful nation in the region which is what China doesn't want China wants to be the most important strategic player and so this can send a message that says look if you don't bring them in line you're going to see a stronger alliance you'll see more anti-ballistic missile systems you see precisely what you don't want what does bringing them in line mean I mean would China ever go so far as to say help the United States remove Kim John Warner or sort of that what what would look like it was China being a partner with the United States here what the United States would like and what China to some degree would like is a more compliant Kim Jong Un one that would take some advice and guidance from China and that would at the very least freeze its development of nuclear weapons and help to create a path for diplomacy which is what China and to a degree the United States also want but it is very hard to find that path diplomacy which Secretary Tillerson and others have been seeking if North Korea continues to test nuclear weapons possibly hydrogen bombs and I.C.B.M.'s North Korea of course is now threatening to detonate a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean which would be extremely high school tour All right Robert Daly he's a former diplomat he directs the Kissinger center on China and the u.s. At the Wilson Center thanks much for coming in Thank You To Mexico now where the death toll from last week's earthquake has climbed to well over 300 structures have been damaged throughout central Mexico including more than 150 churches That's according to the country's archdiocese hardest hit were churches in the state of Puebla a center of the quake N.P.R.'s Carrie Kahn sent this report from the town of children in the center of town sits Cholula as the ancient Pearman said to be the widest in the world it's never been fully excavated but to get to what is the involves a steep climb 535455. News I'm David Greene and I'm Mary Louise Kelly a milestone in the nation's civil rights struggle is being commemorated today in Little Rock Arkansas it has been 60 years since 9 African-American students escorted. By federal troops walked into all white Little Rock Central High School it was one of the 1st tests of the Supreme Court's landmark ruling Brown vs the Board of Education which declared segregated schools unconstitutional N.P.R.'s Debbie Elliott joins us now from Little Rock Good morning to every good morning so let's go back in time to this moment this was September 1957. Was. When Debbie remind us what happened when those 9 black students and rolled Central High Well the segregationist governor at the time Orval Faubus called up the state's National Guard to block them from attending and the school became this flashpoint in the nation's battle over and aggression you know the whole world was watching as these angry and sometimes violent white mobs were yelling and spitting on the black teens it was a real brutal display of how far a state would go to preserve you know the Jim Crow laws in the south and in some ways it was the 1st test of the federal government's resolve to live up to that Brown versus the Board of Education ruling that all Americans deserved an equal opportunity at education so eventually President Eisenhower federalized the guard he sent an army paratroopers to escort the students into Central High and what followed was an incredibly tough year for these black teenagers the group was tormented by both their classmates and teachers yet they remain they stuck it out establishing themselves as pioneers of school integration in this country and they became known you know forever more as the Little Rock 9 a Little Rock 9 out of those $98.00 are still alive and I gather they'll be back at Central High School today what's going to be happening right it's a reunion of sorts they're now in their seventy's they will be in the school auditorium for a ceremony President former President Bill Clegg. And we'll be speaking he of course in Arkansas native and former governor here and as president he had signed legislation marking Central High is a national historic site there have been activities going on for the past week sort of honoring the legacy of the Little Rock 9 last night at a interfaith service one of the speakers was Aaron farmer he was a young black woman who is now the student body president at Central High School and she spoke of walking a path made way by the Little Rock 9. Arness Green one of the group reflected on what it was like for them to be together now 60 years later I think I speak for everybody that we are proud to be a little rocky mountain and friends forever and that club was formed. We had a short membership. Opportunity. To be there on the 4th of September I joined and on the 25th it was sealed so. We are a group forever united and divvy just real quick walk us forward to today and what the sense is in Little Rock of what's changed what hasn't. Well you know everybody is talking about the work not being over the theme of the event has reflections on progress but there has been a bit of a backlash from parents and others who say Little Rock schools have now resegregated 60 years later and that is something that people need to turn their attention to all right that's N.P.R.'s Debbie Elliott reporting from Little Rock thanks a lot you're welcome and this is Morning Edition from n.p.r. With the plan developed by the White House and congressional negotiators they called the Big 6 have started to emerge including some loose numbers on corporate and individual taxes marketplaces Kimberly Adams in Washington let's start with corporate taxes a subject that came up this weekend what are we hearing so the Washington Post and a couple of other news outlets are reporting it looks like we're going to see a 20 percent corporate tax rate and that's different than what the president has been saying all through this process that he wants 15 percent on corporate tax rates and even this weekend talking to reporters he said he still wants to see 15 percent any hints about what individuals might pay it looks like again we're going off of leaks in news reports here that there's going to be a compression of tax brackets from $7.00 tax brackets to 3 a lower tax rate for the wealthiest of individuals and then there's some talk of limiting state and local tax deductions Bloomberg is reporting that that's in the plan and that would impact a lot of those blue states with really high taxes like New York and California but let's be clear you're not looking at a print out of the trunk tax plan at the moment no we haven't seen the official plan yet we're talking about leaks from the big 6 we're talking about things that may be trial balloons where they kind of float ideas out there in the public just to see what the reaction will be and so in theory we're going to get this actual plan later this week to really Adams thank you let's check markets the Dow is down 15 points 2 tenths of a percent the s.
