The man of science, but hes spiritual. So when i met him as an actor, he is an absolute feast. Then as he went into his story, and he told me of his experiences, i knew that i had to play him in this movie. I thought hollywood was a very powerful agent of change, a very powerful platform to propagate the truth. So i took my story, i gave over my life rights to a producer, David Wolthoff in 2009, and he ran with it. It took him 5 years to finally meet with ridley scott who thought the story was powerful, who had so much faith in my fake journey, and here we are today. In this is the story of a nigerian immigrant that comes to and snowy pittsburgh to tell america the truth about itself. Its an extraordinary story. David versus goliath, man versus american tale. The hollywood news report caught up with eddie redmayne, amber heard, Alicia Vikander and oscarwinning director tom it be hooper to chat about their criticallyacclaimed biopic the danish girl. I first read the script about 3 or 4 years ago, and whats been amazing is that only since weve wrapped the film, laverne cox, when she was on the cover of time magazine, the Tipping Point that felt like an extraordinary moment, but then when Catelyn Jenner came out and started making her show, and using her show to really put a spotlight on trans issues, its been wonderful to watch that education that i had had in the few years preparing to play lili sort of come into the mainstream has been fantastic. There are actually two danish girls in our story. Its an incredible story about unconditional love. Its a very unique love story at its heart, and then its also pioneer. She was one of the first transgender women who actually went through surgery a hundred years back, and it was just one of those events i was surprised we didnt know more about. It hadnt been told. Lucinda coxon, the writer, did an amazing job that just brought me to tears the first time i read it. At its center its a portrait of a marriage going through this profound change, and i was so moved by the love story when i read this screenplay 7 years ago. It was 2008, and i was in early preproduction of the kings speech, and i hoped one day id get the chance to make it. After the kings speech and les mis i was to have success with both of those films. I had a moment in time where i could get a passion project made, and this was the passion project i wanted to make. Here we are in hollywood at the premiere. Its so exciting. Of spike lees drama about Gang Violence in chicago chiraq. Many of the people in the film are people who are in that community. So it wasnt like we were hiring actors other people from other towns. We were immersed in the community. So it was i wont say effortless, but we didnt have to create the environment. We were in the real environment with real mothers, people who have lost their children, and people who are grieving, and people who are trying to make a difference, and take the city back block by block. When youre in the hands of spike lee, and you understand that hes the leader and hes going to steer the ship, youve got to just go along for the ride, but it was beautiful. I mean, being familiar with lysistrata and the story, and understanding everything from verse and the ideologies of Greek Theater and love and war, and being able to put that into pretty cool. There were so many amazing people that were a part of this film, just legends, and our community and the cinematic community period. Working with them i was just it is soaking up so much trying to learn and soak it all in, and at the same time focus so that i can actually do some work. I just watch and try to soak it all in. If you think about the public outcry of whats happened in paris, which people should, because if youre a human being you believe that all human beings should have the same value. It doesnt matter if youre black, brown, whether its in paris or anywhere else. So why there isnt as much state of emergency about our own cities raises some very troubling questions about what we value, what we love, and whether or not we are sane. The power we have over them withholding just a day, a week, imagine a month, a year. Oh, theyre going to bring the peace. I had to use every bit of my artistic being to help tell this to be told. So its so interesting when you say it feels like a broadway play when you read it, because it definitely felt like that when i was performing it. When you say this actually is derived from a play that was taking place over 2000 years ago, and just to take something that aristophanes created with lysistrata and bring it into modern day is really exciting. It has people talking. People are curious. People really want to know, and i feel like once people have the opportunity to view it and see it its unique. I do hope that somehow, with gods help this will spur a real discussion about guns in this country. Im not trying to take anyones 2nd amendment rights, but we need heavier background checks, and like father pfleger, the Great American who john cusacks character is based upon, he has a great idea. The problem is, dear sir, my wife cant sing anymore. It comes and then it goes, and some people will try and hold on to it for too long. My character in the film tries to hold on to it too long, not through plastic surgery, but through her spirit. So in her spirit she doesnt grow up. Girl, and she needs to move on. Shes held on to her youth for too long. I mean this movie really isnt about the vanity and the physicality of aging. Its not really about that kind of youth. I think its about the spirit of youth in our hearts and in our souls. I think its about what youth really is, because youth is. It comes and it goes.
