"early" this saturday morning, july 30th, 2011. captioning funded by cbs >> good morning. welcome to "the early show." happy saturday. i'm rebecca jarvis. things still proving stalled in washington, d.c. >> that is true. i'm russ mitchell. time is running out in the congress for the white house to reach the deal to prevent the u.s. to defaulting on its financial obligations. the federal government would lose its authority to borrow money. the democratically controlled senate rejected the plan proposed by the house friday. whit johnson is live on capitol hill. good morning to you. >> reporter: with the house republican plan defeated in the senatest senate ma mortgage leader harry reid is moving forward with his own plan he said is a compromise. he said republican leader mitch mcconnell refuses to negotiate as the clock ticks down to tuesday's deadline. >> the bill is passed. >> reporter: speaker john boehner squeaked his deficit reduction plan through the house with a narrow majority and challenge for democrats. >> it is time for the administration and time for our colleagues across the aisle, put something on the table! tell us where you are! >> reporter: he was able to wrangle enough wavering conservatives adding a requirement that congress pass a constitutional balanced budget amendment as a condition for raising the debt limit. senate democrats called it outrageous and rejected the bill late friday night. >> that's not legislation. that was an extravaganza that made them look foolish. >> reporter: attention turns to a modified plan from senate majority leader harry reid that would cut $2.4 trillion in spending, raise the debt ceiling by an equal amount and establish a bipartisan committee to explore further cuts. behind the scenes they have to find a path to compromise, one that can path both chambers of congress, one that president obama will sign. >> the time for putting party first is over. the time for compromise on behalf of the american people is now. and i'm confident that we can solve this problem. i'm confident that we will solve this problem. >> reporter: the house is expected to vote on the reid plan sometime today. it's seen as mostly a symbolic vote to show that a democratic senate plan can't pass a republican house as it stands right now. meanwhile we're told that negotiations will continue through the weekend, through today, with congressional leaders and the white house but nobody seems to know how this is all going to play out. russ? >> whit johnson on capitol hill, thank you very much. for more efforts to reach a compromise, let's turn to amy klobuchar of minnesota. >> good morning, russ. we have to get this done. >> do you understand bipartisan negotiations are taking place today? >> i believe they will take place. they must take place. this is the ninth inning. the time for policical posturing is over. these votes are votes and had to take place to get the ball moving. now is the time for the real negotiations. one of the things the american people have to understand and believe me i'm appalled by this, i'm a first term senator. i was in county government, businesses don't run like this, county governments but that's beside the point. we have to look for the common ground now and here's the common ground. the cuts are nearly identical, over $1 trillion in cuts, plus senator reid has added an additional $1 trillion. secondly there's caps in both of these bills. republican version and the democratic version, caps on spending, that's what brought us the prosperity in the '90s, and there's enforcement mechanism in both versions with some kind of commission to ensure there's going to be further cuts and further way of looking at this in a balanceed aapproach. >> senator, let me ask you about the bill you and your fellow democrats decided to table last night. how far was that from what you're willing to accept? >> as i said the cut, senator reid's bill has more cuts, the cuts in the bill are similar for that set $1 trillion in cuts and so i think that is a very positive piece of this that we're not widely different in the kinds of cuts we're looking at. that is important. also the caps, so there's a number of things in there, that are similar. one of the things that's problematic of course is having to go through this four months from now because of the consistency for our economy, because the markets are going wild this week. if we do this again december it's going to hurt our retailers. we have to come up with a way to do this. a longer term extension with an enforcement mechanicismism in to do more is most important. >> you sound, you know, optimistic, frustrated but optimistic on this. let me ask you, a story in the "new york times" three veteran lawmakers from a timing standpoint they think it's almost impossible a deal can be cut by august 2nd. do you agree with that? >> i don't. what you've seen so far is posturing. we're down to the real nuts and bolts of this. it has to get done. i've heard from ceos in my states, two snowmobile companies want to get this done, general mills, i've heard from families all over the states, how can this happen? how can you go on this long? the american people are calling their representatives, e-mailing, sending letters, making clear this is it. procedurally, while it's difficult it can get done. we plan on having a 1:00 a.m. vote in the senate today so we can keep that clock moving and negotiations are so important today to get this done for our country. >> okay, senator amy klobuchar of minnesota, long day. thanks so much, we appreciate it. here's rebecca. how much does the government owe? the government has $46 billion to pay its bills. by tuesday that number will go down to $19 billion, on wednesday it will be just $10 billion. but also on wednesday, the government will owe $23 billion to pay millions of social security recipients. so joining us now to shed some light on what august 2nd will look like if a deal is not reached is chrystia freeland and david weiss. what is august 2nd going to be like and does anyone honestly know how it's going to play out? david? >> the sky is not going to turn black and you're not going to go down to the post office and it's going to be closed. basically what's going to happen in washington they have to go to plan "b" and as you point out there's not going to be, the debt option is not there. they can't borrow money and put things on the credit cards. they have to take tax receipts to pay the bills. the problem is that when they need $1, they're only going to get 60 cents and basically that means they have to cover that 40 cents that they can't pay people and have to decide who they're not going to pay, that could be social security people, that could be medicare, could be military pensions, could be contractors, so the treasury hasn't told us how they're going to do it exactly. we know eventually these cuts are going to happen. >> we don't know what plan "b" like. the reality is we're borrowing for every $1 we spend, 40 cents, only getting 60 cents from taxes. >> exactly, we don't know what is going to happen. you laid out the crunch day so the crunch day is actually august 3rd, that's the day when the government has a big $23 billion social security payment and it has between $10 billion and $12 billion in tax revenue coming in. i think the really big issue for the treasury is going to be how it distinguishes between, if you will, paying back the money it already owes, paying back the government bond holders, and paying its ongoing running costs, things like social security, medicare, medicaid, military salaries and so forth, and i think the betting is that the government will put, will give a priority to paying the bills it already owes, to paying the bond holders, simply because if you don't do that, you go into massive default, and the whole global financial system i think really starts getting shaky, but not paying some of the big government commitments within the united states, that's going to get painful pretty fast. >> not paying the social securitys, the medicares, the medicaids of the world or even our defense budget that's as big of an issue for many in many mind as defaulting on our debt which would be a nonpayment on the debt. constitutionally we have to pay that debt off first. >> we have to pay the interest and there is a lot of interest coming due and there's a lot of restructuring that has to be done with the existing debt so in other words it's almost like refinancing a credit card. we'll be moving some to another and in that process our interest rates will be determined, how much we're going to have to pay so right now it looks very good but our costs could go up even though we're not issuing any debt. it's like maxing out a credit card and missing the date and all of the sudden your rates spike and suddenly you have to pay the extra money. >> for americans it gets more expen expensive. chrystia what happens to americans if it doesn't happen august 2nd? >> for sure market shakiness. the big question is going to be david's point about the rollover. the big question is going to be the u.s. government it's not just a question of keeping the interest palts going. it's as if to use a mortgage metaphor if your mortgage runs out and you have to refinance and it must happen in august. the big question is going to be are the global markets, because a lot of the people who are lending the u.s. money are foreign, the big question is going to be, will they be willing to keep on lending money to the united states and if they're not, it's 2008 all over again. >> chrystia and david, mucthanku so much. whatever the outcome of the deba debate, there will be winners and losers, we take a look at that part of the story, congressional correspondent nancy cordes and "national journal" contributor in our washington bureau. you heard senator klobuchar say the two bills are not that far apart. >> the two major issues have been keeping them apart from the beginning. the first issue how long to extend the debt ceiling. democrats through 2012, republicans who say no. we need to extend it in about six months and between now and then put some kind of commission in place to cut spending even more and that needs to be the trigger to raise the debt ceiling again otherwise washington won't do anything. what they're trying to do is figure out some way to meet in the middle, maybe increase the debt ceiling again in six months but make it more of a formality, that's what democrats want, republicans holding firm and the other big issue separating them is this deficit commission itself and what its role is going to be. republicans want that commission to focus only on spending cuts. democrats want it to be a mix of cuts and increased tax revenue and whether they can come to an agreement on this at all is what's going to determine whether we get through august 2nd or not. >> let's talk about political winners and losers. major, i'll turn to you. the game is not over yet but speaker boehner, how is his performance being perceived on capitol hill? >> unevenly. the speaker was unable to marshal his forces thursday market. created volatility in the market, created a sense in washington the house republicans were not unified. in the end he got a bill and moved the process forward. that is one lost day for negotiators to get something done before tuesday. speaker boehner's speakership is not in jeopardy but he knows if he goes through this process again and he loses his own team that he can't negotiate from a position of clout with harry reid or the president on this matter or anything else so he's weakened compared to where he was a week ago. >> nancy let's talk about the democrats how they've been perceived at this point. >> it depends on your political persuasion. if you think that the two sides should be meeting in the middle, then you like what the democrats have been doing, because they have put a lot of their sacred cows on the table throughout the negotiation, things like medicare and medicaid and perhaps making some cuts to the programs. if you think that democrats should never have put those things on the table, then you think that they come out as losers, and vice versa with the republicans, if you think this problem with the debt is created solely by spending you like the fact they have stuck to their guns on that issue. if you don't and think it's a mix of revenue and spending cuts you think they should have given some. >> 15 seconds, let's talk about the president and how he's being looked at. major first 15. >> the president is doing better than congressional republicans but his top line number has shrunk the last two weeks consecutively. gallup 40%, the lowest of his presidency. everyone is suffering. >> nancy? >> and the last week the president and the white house have desperately trying to get back into these negotiations feeling like they needed a set at the table. it was congressional leaders driving the train and that weakened the white house somewhat as well. >> nancy cordes and major garrett, long days for you two as well. thank you for getting up early and talking to us. >> my pleasure. there was much hope that tropical storm don would bring much needed rain to bone dry parts of the coast of texas. jason wheeler from keye in austin is at portis abe isabel, south padre island. did it bring rain relief? >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. no rain relief really at all. it we have starry skies and unexpectedly dry morning. the people who showed up rods and reels in hand last night expected a good drenching as they did their fishing but the tropical storm that was supposed to deliver that deluge turned out to be the big one that got away. the storm sort of fizzled out north of here as it was about to make landfall in a sparsely populated area. the scattered showers that doused vacationers on south padre island were gone about as fast as they arrived. some places got an inch, maybe a couple of inches in other spots. this certainly was not enough to overcome the stubborn drought choking the state since much of last year. farmers many plowing their fields in a hurry to get a deep soaking. didn't come. probably a lot of disappointment and the dud that was don is making a hasty retreat to the west, folks looking further out into the tropics for something that might become a drought buster, tropical storms usually not welcome here but this is not a normal year. >> jason, thank you. we appreciate it. best of luck to the people of that area. now for more on the path of the storm and whether the area has relief in sight here's lonnie quinn. >> not looking good for texas. we wanted rain, didn't get it. at its best when it was churning out there, just didn't have a lot of oomph to it to begin with. was never going to be a strong tropical storm. look at the radar signature, barely anything out there. i cannot find the center of circulation, a remnant low now, couple of scattered showers maybe embedded thunderstorm here and there but not the rain relief they needed. galveston, texas, needed over five inches of rain to get back to normal. they picked up 0.25 of an inch. do i see anything brewing in terms of organized systems? national hurricane center is watching this area well east of the wind ward islands. even if it goes to texas we don't know that part yet. that's a look at the national picture. here's a closer look at the weather for your weekend. >> everybody make it a great day where you are. for the rest of the headlines here's betty. >> good morning, everybody. an investigation is under way into why two delta airlines planes had a collision on the tarmac at o'hare airport in chicago. it happened as the planes were backing away from the loading gate. both planes had minor damage and no injuries. passengers were placed on later flights. a u.s. army soldier is held without bond this morning accused of plotting a terror attack on ft. hood, texas. private nasser abdo was planning to bomb the base and a nearby restaurant frequented by military personnel. it would have been a replay of a 2009 deadly rampage. nasser could face additional charges. president obama says the famine in east africa has not received the attention it deserves in the u.s. he called for an international response. drought and famine in somalia affected more than 11 million people. several million live in an area controlled by a militant group with ties to al qaeda. aid groups are not being permitted to deliver food to the air. 19 minutes past the hour. back to rebecca. two american hikers who have been imprisoned in iran on spy charges for two years are at a turning paint. shane bauer and josh fattal are expected in court in iran for what their families hope to be a lead to freedom. >> reporter: they have in prison since 2009, bauer had been hiking along the unmarked iraq/iran border with his fiance sarah shourd and friend josh fattal. shourd was released last september and returned to the u.s. bauer and fattal have not been seen since last february. their frustrating ordeal highlighted by a series of courtroom postponements most recently in may. the long road to justice has been especially hard for the family who have worked tirelessly for two years to help free their loved ones. joining us now are sarah shourd and josh's mother and brother, lauren and alex fattal. thank you for joining us this morning. i can imagine in a case like this you just never give up hope but what are you hearing about what happens tomorrow whether or not that hearing will happen, sarah? >> we're hearing that there's hope that a final decision will be made. this has been a very long time in coming. the first time that we heard from our investigators that we were going to court was over 22 months ago so shane and josh and the rest of us have been waiting and hoping for this for a long time. >> is there anything specific laura you've been hearing what could happen tomorrow and why you should be hopeful right now? >> we're very hopeful in that it is scheduled for the day of their capture, the anniversary of their capture. they were taken on july 31st, 2009, josh and shane were 27 years old. they are now 29 years old. they've celebrated their 29th birthday in prison, so we are hopeful that this anniversary and the following day being the beginning of ramadan will be our time and we're hopeful this could be the time we're waiting for. our court hearing had been started november 6th. it was delayed. they had a court hearing on february 6th, and then they were supposed to have a court hearing on may 11th. it didn't happen so truly, this entire almost second year of detention has been about waiting for the court hearing. >> alex, what has it been like to wait and have hope and have it taken away and have it happen over and over again? >> the only thing that this detention is accomplishing is it's breaking our hearts and breaking the hearts of people all around the world. we had a rally here in new york just yesterday, well over 100 people there, people flying in from different parts of the country, and the kind of solidarity here and internationally is really overwhelming, for the secretary-general of the united nations, to mohammed aly, desmond tutu, the world is waiting to celebrate shane and josh's freedom, they'll walk in the courtroom in a few hours, given the time difference, in a few hours we pray they walk out free men. >> sarah, you've been in a similar position to them now, what do you think is going through their mind at this moment in time in. >> i imagine it's similar to what we're feeling, every day the anxiety and the tension increases but also our hope is increasing every day. i was shown compassion and released. it was clear the chief of human rights stated that it was, the judiciary was convinced that i was incapable of espionage. that was almost 11 months ago, and we pray that the time for compassion for shane and josh is very near. >> we certainly hope all of your prayers are answered. thank you so much for joining us. sarah, laura, alex, thank you. >> thank you, rebeak ka. >> we'll be back. this is "the early show" on cbs. from behind bars to taking the bar, his extraordinary journey, plus tuesday's movie, "one amazing summer" for jason bateman, this "sunday morning." consumes me. we've also been consumed on a more serious note by a week of very good news for amanda knox and her family. knox in seattle is serving 26 years in italian prison for murder. she believes she is one step closer to murder. dna experts say crucial pieces of evidence were mishandled. this morning prosecutors get a chance to poke holes in testimony. nick piza correspondent for "the daily news" in london is in perugia, italy. good morning to you. >> reporter: a bit of a slow start because the prosecutors in the defense were arguing over the best way how to take hold of the independent report from the two experts we heard earlier this week. amanda knox is in court again as the 24-year-old american continues to appeal her conviction for murder. today is the prosecution's turn to examine independent experts who earlier this week said much of the dna evidence crucial to knox's conviction is inadmissible. in 2007 knox and her then boyfriend were found guilty of murdering meredith kercher. the couple and the local drifter rudy goday were found guilty. independent experts found the samples of knox and kercher's dna on the alleged murder weapon were too small to be reliable and the way in which evidence was collected could have been contaminated. police bagged it with dirty gloves on. this is a key turning point in the case. >> we've been optimistic because amanda has told us the truth, that the truth will be assessed in the trial and the justice will prevail. >> reporter: amanda's family has rising hope this could lead to their daughter's release. prosecutors if they fail to undermine that dna evidence from those experts, obviously it will raise hopes for amanda's family she will be freed on appeal when this case resumes in september after the summer recess. >> nick piza from "the daily mail" in london thank you. this morning we spoke with amanda knox's mother and asked her about her hope that her daughter's conviction could be overturned. >> i hope today everything remains clear there were huge mistakes made in the gathering of evidence and in the analyzing of evidence and that combined with the fact that there's no evidence of amanda in that room will show everybody that she truly is innocent. i want to say it's done but i can't do that because even in the first trial, when there was no evidence that was put out there that connected her to the crime, even in the first trial, the knife was dubious at best, it was the wrong size, all of those things, so we were really confident then with the fact that the prosecution had not even come close to proving their case and we were just devastated when they found her guilty so that's the fear that holds us back from being totally confident now. i definitely think every day we're becoming a little less stressed and we're allowing ourselves so be more hopeful but it's not a done deal until amanda walks out. she's still locked up there, still horrible for her, especially now when she can see amanda sitting there and waiting, it's horrible. obviously i hope that she's released as soon as possible. i hope that she's able to regain her life. i've hoped that she's able to at some point in time go back to being just truly this wonderful, loving, trusting, happy young woman. she's lost four years that she'll never get back. perfect outcome is everybody realizes and it's clear to even the world, the wider world that amanda and raphale are completely innocent and have been wrongly accused and convicted and finally this mistake is cleerld up. >> now here's lonnie quinn with another check of the weather. >> good morning to you and good morning, everybody. let's get to the weather headlines. the big story is about tropical storm don which has disappointed texas. let's be clear, no one wants a destructive storm coming to their area but for all of you folks in texas, you needed more rain. don did not deliver that. it's just a remnant low right now, pushing further off to the west into texaco, but scattered showers at best, some areas picking up about an inch of rain, give or take here or there. the coastal areas from galveston to corpus christi, you need it, between four to six inches of rain, nothing close to it. there will be some minor coasting flooding today, we have coastal flood advisories in effect, that's because of the onshore flow, not because of soaking rains and even that only running about a foot above flood stage along the coast. look at the satellite picture, not impressive. this, i can't find it, this is it. i can't find that quintessential counter clockwise spin. it's don and don pushes into mexico, better rain around the southwest, those are monsoonal showers, they'll pick up in one single downpour, the potential for three inches, we wish that was on top of the texas coastline. that's a quick look at the national picture and here now a closer look at the weather for your weekend. all right, happy saturday, "consumer reports" called this the best home phone service of the year. it costs $250, basically you ditch your home land line through your verizon or time warner and purchase this for $250. you hook it up to your internet connection and you hook the other side up to a phone set and this actually can come with it, it's $40, and it's free after that. the company estimates once you invest in the box, which is $250, you'll make the money back in about six months over the course of a year you'll save $300. the next year because the box is out of the picture you'll save $600 a year. >> quickly, credit cards, how do we make them work for us? >> it's broken down by blood types and most people don't know their blood types. you need to find that out first. >> i don't know mine. >> type o is the digestive tract of ancient types. people said to do well with lean meats, chicken and fish. pretty basic. >> how about as"a"? >> agrarian, farmers, vegetarian, grains, thought to be good. gentle exercise, beneficial for that type. >> "b" nomadic. >> tend to be more tolerant, do well with a low-fat dairy diet, lots of produce, avoid wheat or corn and moderate exercise according to the theory, beneficial for those types. type ab, more of the modern blood type, modern diet, sensitive tract, avoid pork, meat and pretty healthy, common sense stuff, nothing too outlandish in terms of what you're putting in your mouth. >> not telling you to eat nothing but cheese or meat but at the same time, is there research to support the legitimacy of all of this? >> it gets dicey and we say in medicine if something sounds too good to be true probably it is and there is a lot of controversy about this diet. most well-respected medical and scientific experts say the research is lacking. the person who devised this diet can back it up with his own theories and i think when you look at something like this as with anything in medicine and health you have to balance risk versus benefit. there's nothing harmful in the diet but whether it's going to be beneficial and transform your ability to lose weight or stay lean that's up in the air. >> people can feel better if they consume certain types of food. >> absolutely and that speaks more to the ayurvedic or holistic approach. ayu revedic is the middle eastern approach to medicine they feel you have a constitutional type that is different so you and i might have different constitutional types so therefore what we eat and how we exercise and how we move might differ. i think there's a lot in medicine and science we still don't understand and people should have an open mind. >> ultimately it sounds like you're not saying this is the particularly sensible diet, more about a well-rounded? >> well rebecca, good morning. we certainly hope so. there was another breakdown in negotiations late last night between senate majority leader harry reid and mitch mcconnell the republican. we're told discussions will resume and continue on some level today and may include folks at the white house and leaders in the house of represents. democrats and republicans really aren't that far apart right now in some of the initial spending cuts. the major sticking points that remain are on how long to extend that debt ceiling increase and what mechanism will be in place to ensure that there are future cuts. republicans want a short term raise in the debt ceiling to force lawmakers about six months from now to make those tough decisions. democrats want a long-term extension in the debt ceiling and they hope that mechanism could include some form of revenue or tax increases, so still a lot to iron out but somehow all of these moving parts, all of this has to come together before tuesday. rebecca? >> whit johnson on capitol hill, it is a tight deadline. thank you for joining us. now for more on the morning headlines we turn to cbs news correspond enand "morning news" anchor betty nguyen. >> good morning russ and good morning to you. repercussions of the debt talks are being felt on the financial markets. the dow lost 537 points for the week, down more than 4%. it was the worst week in a year on wall street. adding to the investors' worry, a dismal report on the nation's economic growth. libya's state television is still on the air this morning, despite being bombed by nato war planes. the satellite transmitters in tripoli were attacked during the night. nato say know march gadhafi is using them to mobilize his supporters. cuban government said friday it will run the airline it charters flights to the u.s., nine additional flights will be going to the u.s. before yesterday's announcement, miami, los angeles and new york were the only cities offering flights to cuba. president obama loosened travel restrictions to cuba two years ago. steve jobs, the ceo of apple latest earnings report from the world's most highly valued tech company shows cash reserves are more than $76 billion. the u.s. treasury has reserves just under $74 billion. these figures may not be directly comparable since apple's number is based on its ready cash while the u.s. figure is how much it has before hitting the debt ceiling. and if you're asking where's the beef it can be found in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame. the meat dress worn which lady ga ga h gaga has been preserved by a taxidermist. it was part of the hall's women who rock women passion and power exhibit which will run into february. it's about power minutes past the hour. i know lonnie you're upset you wanted to see the meat dress in "chef on a shoestring," not going to happen now. >> what was she thinking? dress out of meat? ew. how do you follow that one up? what do you do? >> put it on the barbecue. i don't know what you do? >> cook the dress, nice. tropical storm don it's done. it did not bring the rain that we had hoped for in texas and there's not much more in the foreseeable future in terms of wet weather. monsoonal rains will be firing up in the southwest in a single downpour in that area of the country could bring like three inches of rain and summer heat continues for portions of our country, i'm talking from missouri down to texas also from north carolina all the way down to say the georgia coastline, heat alerts are in effect, temperatures 95 to 105 degrees feeling like 110 up to 115, if you would like to escape the heat, you want to head to the corners, go up to say presque isle, care beau, maine, seattle, washington, not get out of the upper 70s. satellite and radar a few exiting storms up around care beau, maine. good looking day and seattle doing just fine and dandy as well. a quick look at the national picture. a closer look at the weather for your weekend. >> this weather segment sponsored by tums. fights heartburn fast. >> pretty looking picture there of new york city. a great looking day here. over toe my buddy, russ. polygamist leader warren jeffs is on trial in texas for allegedly assaulting two underaged girls. on friday jeffs objected to what a witness was saying and wouldn't stop talking. cbs news correspondent hattie kaufmanhas more. >> reporter: warren jeffs objected and ended with a threat. >> he wanted an occasion to give a sermon. >> reporter: shouting, jeffs accused the court of violating sacred ground saying the religious persecution must cease and warning god would bring sickness and death unless the trial was stopped. jeffs stood trial in 2007 was as an accomplice to death. >> count one the defendant is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. >> reporter: conviction later overturned because of faulty jury instruction. in 2008 fbi agents raided the compound of the breakaway mormon sect led by jeffs after allegations that children were being forced to marry. texas is now trying jeffs for two counts of sexual assault of a child. prosecutors claim they will play audiotapes of him raping a 12-year-old girl. >> religion is not on trial here. you can have a religion. it doesn't entitle to you rape a 12 or 13-year-old. the prosecutors want to keep a focus on that crime. >> reporter: friday's outburst came a day after he fired his legal team, choosing to go it alone. >> one might view this as him saying this is my battle and i want to represent myself. no one else would understand his religion but as far as his reasoning, we can't speak to that. >> reporter: seven other sect leaders have already been convicted. if jeffs is found guilty he faces life in prison. hattie kaufmann, cbs news, los angeles. >> joining us is alyssa wall, former member of jeffs' compound, managed to escape when she was 18 years old. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> were you surprised by jeffs' outburst in the courtroom? ? really i wasn't surprised. i couldn't expect anything less from such an irrational, honestly partially crazy leader as i knew him. >> he fired his entire defense team as we saw on thursday, the seventh time he's done this. i think i know the answer based on the last question. would you expect that type of behavior from him? >> i really would, because warren is, he really does believe he is god and i really do think that he believes that he is better than everyone else and even in his statements to the judge about him wanting to have a pure defense i don't think he did anything wrong. he wants to defend his religion and status as the god-like figure of the religion. >> what can you tell us about a man and religious figure what is he like? >> in retrospect i believe warren as a young child i was exposed to him my entire life and he really did display a lot of narcisistic behavior. he was groomed to become the leader and the god-like figure within this closed community. so he really did grow up with a lot of idolistic beliefs about himself and about his power over the community. as far as how he treated the people, we all feared him greatly and he demanded very much complete obedience and absolute respect. >> what type of things do the women on this compound, the girls in this compound go through? >> that is such a big question, because people have to really understand how these women are raised. really from before birth and from generation to generation, they're raised without an identity. they really are just property to the community and especially the men, and they're all about serving the men and fulfilling the men's life, and these women grow up with no rights really and no knowledge of what they should have as far as being a woman, having the rights of what we have here in america. >> miss wahl, what do you hope will come out of this trial? >> yes, which is more than i can say for others. >> goes by a lot of other names in the show. the show has been a stunning success and i say stunning because it touches on details that could be very problematic i should say. tell me how surprised you are by all of this. >> i mean i think we were optimistic. we've each sort of been a part of this journey of the creation of the show for different amounts of time but i would say personally i thought it was very funny and i was optimistic that it would be received well but of course you never know and then we started previews and to see not only did sort of what i considered to be like the target audience, sort of maybe a younger crowd who grew up "south park" thought it was funny but we realized it sort of knew no age, older people were laughing at it, very old people were laughing at it. it covered a lot of a wide demographic which was a very nice surprise. >> absolutely. >> how about the mormon community, are they laughing? >> they have, i mean, they've gone out of their way in many respects to compliment the work that we're doing. very often i would say at least twice a week we have somebody who practices mormon faith come up come up and say i may be offended by some of the content but it's a wonderful show and the message is amazing and the heart in it i think catches a lot of people by surprise and that is the genius of what trey and matt and bobby and everybody's done. >> the "south park" team, nikki your character is so sweet right from the beginning. >> absolutely. >> do you feel like that's something that you had to sort of search for? because you have this quality as a performer that's so likeable from start to finish. >> oh, thanks, i appreciate that, the compliment. you know, it's funny. i mean, i'm just playing the given circumstances in my mind, nabulungi is, you know, i'm a disney girl so in my mind she's just a sweet sort of character who is not yet affected by the reality of her situation. she still has such hope and if you play into that, it's a really beautiful thing to get to do every night for a little while. you know, because i've seen some bad stuff in my life and it's sort of nice to be able to just be innocent and have just pure hope. >> did you ever have any doubt when you first signed up for it, you saw the script. >> i did. i have a lot of doubt. >> really. >> i called up my agent when i first heard. they sent me a demo with a controversial number on it that's still in the show to this day and i said i really love trey and matt and bobby, but i don't want to die. i really have this -- >> you don't want to get stoned in the street. >> i don't want to get shot and i fell like feel like this is intense material. >> in terms of the trajectory they feel this is has been fantastic. where does this rank for each of you? >> tops. >> for me it's almost like i already feel like this is the best thing i will ever be a part of. >> no, you didn't peak yet. >> it's not about peaking. it's knowing how special this is. >> even if we all go on which i expect everybody here to go on and do some amazing things, there is some truth to the fact this is a once in a lifetime event. you know, you dream about this moment, but it doesn't -- all the right pieces came together at the right time to create this atmosphere. i think at least where the musical theater is concerned and especially musical comedy is concerned, this is a major milestone and i don't know that i'll ever be a part of something like this again and it's pretty momentous to know that we all were involved in its creation and its inception. >> right before we opened, mike nichols came to see the show and he was very nice about the show and he said this is the only time this will ever happen. this is the last time. he's like this is it. >> the excitement. >> the joy it's brought to our lives. >> are you keeping a journal? i'm going to show you even if you don't have a grill you can have ribs. >> i like hearing that. >> the sweet and spicy ribs and the fabulous fresh corn and red pepper relish, creamy green beans and then at the end, the sweet, the brown berry cobbler which is great. i'll show you how to finish that. >> great. >> let's get started, we're going to make our rub first if you can help me. we'll have a little brown sugar for sweetness, paprika, chipotle pepper, cumin, all spice, a little more unusual, salt and pepper. 1 1/2 teaspoon and half a teaspoon of black pepper. the great thing about the sugar, a great caramelization. >> when it starts to heat it caramelizes. is there any reason you need to rub it in? >> i'm going to poat it in. the rubbing is a misnomer because then you can damage the heat. >> we want to treat these with love? >> gentle care. put a little bit on here and take it to the oven. i'll show you my nifty trick. >> i'm looking forward to hearing this. i've never heard of grilling indoors. >> this is really great. the key to grilling is sort of that hot air rotating around the ribs so if you will pick this up i will open the oven and so what we're going to do is turn our oven into an outdoor grill. actually -- >> is this far enough away from the heat? >> i am going to put the ribs right on the oven shelf. i'm going to pretend this is a grill rack and i put a cookie sheet underneath and that's my drip pan so you don't make a mess. if i was to leave it in the baking sheet what would that have done to the meat? i would steam it. >> that's what i would have done if you hadn't given me the right instructions. >> this is super easy. if you don't have a grill look at that. those are made in the oven. >> you can see the glaze on it. how long would you have left that in the oven to get to that point? >> about an hour and a half, two hours. these are two pounds apiece. at the end we put a little mott sauce which i'll let you help me make here. i have onion, garlic and ginger and the core of every barbecue sauce, ketchup. this is so easy, like a dump and stir. so i'll dump and you can stir. >> i love that part. perfect. >> vinegar. >> vinegar. >> soy sauce. >> um-hum. >> that gives us our sort of salty note. more sugar. >> more sugar. >> it doesn't come off tasting sweet when you make it. >> the perfect accent for the pork. a little pepper. because we need salt and pepper for everything. >> of course. >> and a little salt. that couldn't be easier. >> no, very simple. >> this is what it looks like after you let is cook for about 15 minutes. >> okay. >> and oh, it's so delicious. >> put it right on. >> right before or what you do in advance? >> about ten minutes before i take them out of the oven and serve it on the side. so i'm going to -- >> so you can have extra if that's what you like. >> right. >> in terms of the cooking temperature, what was it? >> about 300 degrees. >> an hour and a half to two hours? >> hour and a half to two hours in the oven. they cook much faster because the air rotates around the food. >> if you're used to cooking them on a pan you probably need to do the cooking time a little less? >> a little bit less and not only that, when you cook them on the pan they turn gray and when you cook them with my indoor method they look like they've been cooked on the grill. >> a much better color and with any type of meat in the offeven? >> you can. if it's too small put it on a rack in a pan. so air rotates around it. >> i bet it's time for dessert. >> i love the dessert, i'm not going to lie. >>ic not get through the summer without having a berry cobbler. this has four kinds of berries. the brown sugar, there are people in there. >> they have this cobbler dreaming of it. >> i'm a connoisseur on the cobbler so let's see what you got. >> happy unbirthday. >> you can put candles on that, you're ready to go. >> the corn starch thickens, i love the dark brown sugar, a roundness and depth of flavor, the sweet biscuit dough we plop on the top. >> this is so rebecca jarvis i can't -- let's make it happen. as long as you cook my theory is do whatever you need to do to cook. >> this is so easy, look how easy it is. >> very easy. as you're doing that i look at how you did on the money side of things. >> okay, let me know. >> the taste side is coming out great. $36.43, that is low. >> wow! really low. >> with a handsome cobbler. >> third, you made the leaderboard. >> i did?
