Injured. More than 200,000 homes and business remain without power across the state. Six counties have been declared federal disaster areas. Storm surges up to 12 feet are predicted in some places. We have team of correspondents. Lets go to Mark Strassmann in houston. Good morning, one of americas most major cities is quiet this morning and take a look you can see why. This city is under a flood emergency. People have been ordered to stay inside but urged to stay inside the reason is obvious. This is a bit of a lull in the storm system. As light as rain has fallen all day. On the radar it shows that this city is going to get pounded again by rainfall in fact starting to pick up right now. The rainfall total so far are something straight out of the Old Testament on sunday morning, six inches of rain an hour, 14 inches of rain in three hours, as much a is 30 inches of rain in some spots and another foot of rain in the forecast before the day is over. And even though harveys siege has barely begun some people are quickly running out of options. Hundreds of rescues already. Some by boat. Many people have been calling the 911 center they have claimed into the attic to escape rising waters. If the waters continue to rise those folks will be trapped in the attic the police chief is warning people if you go into your attic make sure of an axe that can hack your way through the roof at least you have some place even higher to climb to escape all these rising waters. Again, christine, another foot of rain in the forecast, when you think about what the city is going to go through to mid week, this citys watery misery is going to get worse before it gets better. Mark strassmann thank you. Now for latest on harveys path we turn to scott in dallas, fort worth. Scott . Good morning, Tropical Storm harvey Still Holding that tropical status as you take a look drifting to the southsoutheast at one mile per hour causing torrential rain right now. Damaging rains in houston, the Galveston Area this is a four hour loop of those rain bands continuing to push on shore in the houston area. Flooding merge sees happening all the residents there do not get into your attic get out on to our roof is your house is flooding because we continue to see the feeder bands pushing their way. This stretch is all the way down to south of brownsville. That feeder ban will feed in that means the flooding will continue. Through the day today probably even through the night. Just over the last hour, 14 inches of rain south and east now galveston, but take a look at the rain totals over the last 24 hours. In some spots, 23, almost 24 inches of rain closer towards the austin area, 1318 to even a foot of rain down near galveston were not done yet. Taking a look on the wider view what is going to happen as we go through remainder of the day today and next few days on top of already the 24 inches of rain, theres the potential by the time we get towards the end of the week we can see another 22 inches of rain in houston to near 1 4 15 inches to 18 down towards the south and west. Here is the reason why. Harvey is drifting, by later on in the afternoon down closer towards victoria off towards the north, dealing with this throughout the week. Christine . Scott, thank you. There will be more about harveys devastation in south texas on your local news on this cbs station. Our 24 hour streaming news network cbsn and also on cbs sunday morning. For now im christine johnson. Cbs news new york. For news, 24 hours a day, go welcome back to mosaic. We have been speaking to frank and joe around scouting. Frank mentioned that one of his mentors became a United Methodist minister. United Methodist Church has been active with the boy scouts for years. Many denominations have been. Frank, the involvement of scouts with the community and with the church, has that been since the beginning. It has been. Scouting was started 107 years ago with a partnership with community organizations. We felt we could serve more kid and serve more organizations in the community if we partnered with churches, other civic groups, schools. So the partnership has been going on for 107 years. Thats great. Thats been very intentional. Absolutely. Some groups probably have ownership of their scouting groups directly. We thought we could serve better if we partner with other organizations. How many scouts are in the country . Currently, about 2. 7 million approximately. A good number. Our membership is increasing. We are very pleased about that. Joe, is there a scout troop in every state . There is a scout troop in every state. As franks mentioned, it is growing. In the bay area, we have grown for a number of years consecutively. We are finding that more and more families are looking for outlets for their kids, getting them involved in other extracurricular programs that helpless build education as well as athletics. What are the ages for cub scouts as well as boy scouts . Thats the the two main groups. It is. Cub scouts begin in kindergarten and run through 5th. Boy scouts start in the spring of 5th grade and keep involved in the Boy Scout Troop until theyre 18. Then we have coed programs that would include venturing program which can start as early as 8 8th grade, Sea Scout Program on the water. One of our Fastest Growing programs is the exploring program which is a vocational studies program where we partner with almost every Police Department in Alameda County to provide a hands on program for kids. Thats really interesting. Now, we think of scouts and we think of outdoors, being prepared. Was that the initial beginning where the thrust was in scouting . Yes. Scouting was originally started worldwide by badden powell, a british general. At the end of the war, he thought that the methods of training he used for his troops would benefit kids in england. So the first place he experimented with his methods with kid was actually on a camp out. Okay. He recognized that scouting was about teaching character and leadership skills, good citizenship. But he could implement it best if he included an outdoor program. To be a scout, you cant necessarily stay at the hyatt regency. [ laughter ] you have to get out there. Thats not the kind of camping our scouts have. Whats your impression of that . Is that what motivated you outdoors . I think the outdoors motivated me and also the opportunities to learn something else. We are fortunate that we work a lot with under privileged kids in San Francisco and oakland. When they go to one of our camps it is the first time they have seen a starry night and understand what it is like to be in a forest and see the grass that isnt just in the local park. Those are the experiences scouting gives that other organizations cant. I was impressed in reading that you are also open to the disabled. The hearing impaired, you have a troop in one part of the country. Two of our longest standing partnerships are with California School for the blind and California School for the deaf which are both in fremont, troops 2 and 11. Those started in the 1920s and 30s and are alive and strong today. We are in support of getting those kids as many opportunities as they can as well. Thats great to hear. When you talk about Leadership Qualities and character, are there virtues you talk about more than others like humility, courage, generosity . What do you think is most important . I dont know that any one aspect is anymore important among the things that we teach scouts. We teach them to be honest and trustworthy, have personal integrity. We teach them to be reverent in giving back to the community. That is most critical to us. We have been having what we call good turn activity that all our scouts participate in for many decades. Probably the largest is our scouting for Food Campaign that we conduct every fall. We find thats a critical part of what a scout is doing if were not giving back. Thats a vital life lesson that will benefit them throughout the rest of their lives. What are some of the main fund raisers for the scouts if either if either of you want to address that. We have several. A lot of the ones in the bay area, we have several large special Fund Raising Events incorporated in nature. The largest is our construction lunch. About 1000 people attend every year. Thats really good. Thats impressive. The Construction Industry has come together for 40 years now in support of scouting. The part of scouting they mostly support or gets them inspired most are sending inner city kids in at risk situations to camp every summer. Thats great. We are just about out of time. Is there anything else you want to add . We want to promote beascout. Org which is a website where anybody interested in becoming a scout can find their local packs and troops and you can get more information on joining. We are looking for about 2500 new kids this fall. Thats tremendous. Beascout. Org. Thats great. Its great to have you both here. Thank you for having us. Continue to do the excellent work you are doing and recruit those young men. I understand even though it is a different organization, the girl scouts are also very powerful. Yes. We have both girl scouts and boy scouts in our church that are active. We are appreciative of all the work that you guys do. Thank you for being with us. Thank you. Stay with us. Well meet some scouts. Welcome back to mosaic. We have some proud parents in the back because we have the scouts with us. We have a cub scout and two boy scouts. Let me begin with the one further to the left. I recently became an eagle scout from troop 111 in fremont california. Congratulations. What was your project . Building two shoe racks for the womens side because they didnt have shoes. Excellent. Luke. I am a star scout from troop 168. I recently became assistant senior patrol leader of our troop which is basically second in command. Fantastic. And we have a cub scout with us. My name is kenneth. I just came back from camp. How about that . It was a six day trip. Okay. Did you do a lot of camping . It wasnt exactly camping because we werent in a tent. We were in a cabin. It was kind of camping but not 100 . So you are not staying at the hyatt regency. You are going to camp. Yes, we mostly camp. We would have rather development in a tent than a cabin. Slept in a tent than a cabin. For eagle scout, how long did it take you . I have been in my troop for about three and a half years. I really enjoy scouting because it taught me a lot of lifes values. I have made so many friends and learned so many skills and merit badges. I wouldnt be who i am today without scouting. Fantastic to hear. What about you luke . I have a similar story. I was sitting on the couch one day and i was like dad, can i join boy scouts. Sure, lets find a group. So we joined the group and i have been in scouting ever since. In second grade i joined. Thats six years now. Recently last year i made number one in the nation for the boy Scout Popcorn fund raiser. Thats right. I sold 38,000 worth. Why didnt you bring some popcorn for me this morning . I did not. We are still getting it ordered, if you want to order some after. Okay. I heard you committed 1000. Tell us about that. Like joe said earlier, the blind scouts at the California School for the blind, i donated 1000 to them last year to pay for all the activities they wanted to do and maybe pay for the extra they need to pay since theyre blind scouts. Thats wonderful. Kenneth, have you been able to do Something Like that yet . Not yet. I havent been able to donate anything. I think the main thing i do is every spring we do the food drive. On one saturday, we put flyers on doors and the next saturday we pick up the food and donate it. I think it was San Francisco marin food bank. Thats great, very important. How long have you been with the cub scouts . Tagger, wolf, bear five years. Thats pretty good. Thats farther than i ended up going. When i was growing up it was primarily boys club and ymcas and so forth. I have always been proud of the scouts and that i had that root. All that you do is tremendous. What are some of the other projects you have done . What some of the other projects i have done . I dont know if you have heard about the arthritis foundation. Yes. They have this thing called walk to cure arthritis. I volunteered there, helped setting up tables and setting up the whole thing, putting up the big banner. That was one of the recent projects i have done in scouting. Thats great. Luke, you have come back from jubilee. Jamboree. Excuse me. We call it jubilee. I am wearing my National Scout hat and handkerchief. Under my uniform, i am wearing what we brought with us. I have this on the side right here. I took 200 of those and traded them with scouts from across the nation. I want to say there were 35,000. 35,000. You were there too . We were in the same troop. He was our troop scribe. Franks was telling me this is held every four years and there is a Permanent Location in west virginia. Every summer they have a High Adventure camp there so you can go for a week and do mountain biking. You can do rifles, archery. There is a rope and rock climbing course. You go for a week and learn about rock climbing and do some actual rock cliffs. Every four years between that, they hold the National Scout jamboree. So you guys plan to go again . Yes. I am planning on going to the world jamboree in 2019. I understand there may be people from all over the world there. There will be. We are looking forward to that. I want to say 260 nations will be represented, girls and boys from World Scouting Organization and boy scouts of america. U. S. Is hosting so hope for the best. It is exciting talking to all of you. We have another segment, about four or five more minutes. You will tell us a little bit more. Thank you. Thank you very much. Great. Please join us in this last segment with our scouts. Welcome back to mosaic. I hope you have been with us. Its been exciting talking to these young people about the scouts. They were telling me about the trip they took last year or this year. This year. We came back a month or two ago. Yes from the National Jamboree in west virginia. We had 35,000 scouts there. It was an endless amount of fun activities like rock climbing, atv, mountain biking. We also did one the big events in between all the activities that we do at the jamboree, patch training. All the councils have their own shoulder patches. Kenneth has one, 100 years. Our 100 year anniversary. They had it at the Boy Scout Office in san leandro not long ago. I won the contest for the council, so this was our design for the patch right here. It shows the monument from San Francisco. I brought a bunch of them with me to the jamboree and traded them and got some cool patch sets. I basically have like the tour of the u. S. In patches. Well, all of you sound so excited about the scouts. We havent talked about this, have you decided what you want to do with your life in the future . Yes. I want to go into a medical career when i grow up. Great. To be a doctor is really something i would like to do. First, giving back to the Community Like scouting by helping sick people, a good paying job. I feel there is a lot of value in it. Excellent. What about you . Aero space engineering. Planetary protector. I love math. I love space. With the popcorn fund raiser i do, i made number one in the nation, 38,000 of the popcorn sold, and of that i have probably gotten 50 plus job offers with the businesses i go to. But thats not your main goal. You want to be an astronaut maybe. Space x maybe. If that doesnt work out, scouting has opened the career opportunities. What about you, kenneth . Have you thought about it . I havent really decided yet. I guess i want to to be a quantum physicist. I have never heard of that. Just kidding. Thats great. Those who work in nasa have to have a phd in science. You really have to do a lot of work. I am sure quantum physics is part of that. That sounds exciting. How do you perceive that happening . What time in life . How old will you be . In order to be prepared for medical school, i want to do internships in high school that relate to the medical field which is why i help with the arthritis foundation. Theyre one of the big medical organizations local to me. But i think i can become a doctor maybe by 30ish or so after finishing medical school and maybe specializing. Thats a good age. What about you . I am part of the way there. At my school, middle school in union city, my teacher said i was too smart, to move me up. I did geometry. Now i will have to do honors algebra ii at the high school. But you havent done quantum physics. Not yet. We are almost out of time. It is fantastic to talk to you young men. Continue on your road and achieve your goals. Amen . Yes. Excellent. Thank you for being with us. We had a great day with the scouts and their leaders, the executives that were with us. We thank the parents for bringing them. We hope you are inspired by this program. We hope you were informed and we hope it motivates you to go and recruit scouts and to be active in the leadership that you are involved in. Thank you. This morning. Art, gala events. Even some tech. But first. Som the name of a hit welcome to bay sunday. So many good things are happening. Art, gala events, even some tech. First, something rotten. Thats how we are starting. Thats the name of a hit Broadway Musical in San Francisco. Here to tell us about it is one of the stars adam pascal. Welcome. Thanks for having me. Good to have you with us. This musical focuses on shakespeare and some of the characters in his shadow. Tell us a little bit more. The show was set in the renaissance. Its about two brothers who are playwrights who have not had much success in their career. Nick goes
