Welcome back to mosaic, and im angela, the director of the ministry for the archdiocese of San Francisco, and today we continue our journey for the year of mercy, and with me is followed john della reeva, and he lays a special role in the year mercy and entered the order in 1990, and born and raised in southern california. After completing his education, he worked for the bank of america, la Police Department and the u. S. Postal service, and he has also served in the military. He was ordained to the priesthood and 1989 and he has served most recently as the chaplain at the st. Francis high school and the director at the National Shrine here ins them to scope. Welcome to father john. Weve been talking about the year mercy and i was hoping you could talk a little bit about what it means to be a missionary of mercy. What is the special role that you and others around the world are holding for the church . What comes to my mind right now, we are in the midst of so many people at varied ages preparing to enter the church, and we are trying to heightened the sensitivity and openness and responsiveness to their place, and the significant of their presence. And being a member of the body of christ and with the church, what does that mean in their life, their relationship, their environment as they live out their lives. And more particular for me as a priest and as they san franciscan, the calling of the pope is something that is a beautiful and rich opportunity to deeply reflect, and on some things we take for granted. The carry some of your life, and your life as a prior friar and the dated date ministry and taking upon us, and taking the journey with the holy spirit and to impact with the greatest significance. And sometimes being so powerful an awesome, we can lose sight of the cutting edge way in which we have to be very intentional about the moment and what it entails for your particular station in life, and your vocation. I find it a beautiful open ended prayer that we are being invited into by pope francis. Ultimately most truly by the whole is eric i think, that is what is animated in the idea the pope and the mind of the church. We know that the year mercy is a call to the church to witness our mission of mercy. For so many of our viewers, the concept of designating a year of mercy and missionary of mercy is very new. What does that mean and how Many Missions of mercenary are there . In my experience and so many in rome, over 4000 priests that took part physically in the commissioning and other ceremonies at the vatican. Granted there are many more that could not make it for various reasons to the events in rome, but were just as much concretely commissioned on the local level. And that is a very important focal point for the commissioning. The pope is adamant, as we returned to the local areas that we become a bridge to the embracing of the mandate, in a way by pope francis. For every member of the church it is very important and rightly, it is seated in this beautiful and embrace the lord, a gentle mercy that we receive is catholics. Very specifically in the sacramental reconciliation, but it does not start there in one way and it does not finish their. But it is a fountainhead. That generally pours out and quenches in every nook and cranny that is open. What is happening with the priest is a greater awareness and attentiveness, and a desire to be renewed and a call to extend and to embody, to convey a gentle mercy of the lord. It is a very clear and accessible love of god. If we use it, it makes fertile the soul and every disciples heart, in everyday life and the dynamics of the relationship to extend the same gentleness. To be more determined to exercise a true quality of patients, of genuine presence with people. And in various modes and circumstance that in the moment could seem insignificant, but in the greater scheme and flow of the witness of the church it has great power, transformative power to open the heart of someone, to be trustful, to dare to believe that this beautiful gospel of i hope, this method of gods love is for me as well. And the reason i think that the pope wants us to start with mercy at the springboard, you can have the most beautiful thing, the love of god. But we need this eric, people in flash and humanity that is reporter and, a man can be wounded that is broken, and a man can be wounded. People need to be continually reassured that it is okay for me to be transparent and vulnerable with you. We are that immediate seat and immediacy and the way with the lord, and he wants us to encounter and to continue that transition with the whole world. That is very beautifully put, and this is a special year to witness mercy for all of us, in particular the missionaries of mercer he of mercy. We will be right back after the break. [hip hop music] welcome back to mosaic, and im angela pollock and with me today is father John Dela Riva and talking about the year mercy and what it means to be a missionary of mercy. Father john, you are a kapitan, and many may not know what that is, and it is the order of the priests, and can you explain what the terrorism terrorism karism and what that is. First of all, and the rich history of the church there is a varied array of manifestation of movements of the spirit in groups that week identify and the proper and healthy way is that we all seek to complement and extend to eight by our unique presence that is in harmony of one witness always, and our place can be very distinctive in some ways, and it always interwoven with what has dutifully been done by men and women and so many different orders. But the captains kapitans, it is a religious group of priests, and a brotherhood, and we are very adamant about being identified as a brother of friars that have friars and clerics, those that are ordained as priests, and we see the foundational witness as brothers and fraternity, not just with each other but with everyone that crosses our path, this is our approach and it is a very rich and beautiful thing we have inherited from france. The entire world is our family, and to have an appreciation like pope francis is trying to do right now, with all creation. The brother, son, sister, moon, all of the animals are part of our life. All should be resonating in one voice in the praise of god coming to an awareness of the appreciation of god. The kapitans are a group within the Greater Family of the san franciscans, and this happened in the 15th century. Two signature things of the french kapitans is always been in the ministry with working with the downtrodden, and being people of confession. I think a very important thing that crosses the board to all of the friars, the vast amount of canonized lay brothers that we have. It comes down to the essential thing to the fraternity aspect, and it is very much seeking to be downtoearth, approachable and accessible, and walking and embracing the people where they are. I think that was very them fortin, the two points that were at the heart of the pope i think that was the two points and very important to the pope, very unassuming and humble, and awesome things happening in their lives of being at service. A service that is gentle and compassionate, patient. The conveyed and continually reiterated the people. The tangible love of god. To help them see not just in the times that are pristine, but even in the times of sorrow and burden, there is your loving god. I think that was very much at the heart. Very beautiful. When i think of the different religious orders, we are all of us christians, whether you belong to the religious order are not, and we are all taught the gospel. It is interesting how as we are told in scripture that we are the body of christ, and different members make up that body, and that is how i think of the different religious orders. Different ones play different role, and they emphasize different aspects of living out the gospel. And that is what is beautiful about the kapitan, these ordinary people staying close to people, and your background is so wonderful. Having been a police officer, and the different roles that you have before becoming a priest, im sure that gives you the heart to walk the path with people in ordinary life. And if i understand exactly, this is why pope francis is focusing in on the kapitan, walking the ordinary path, and the commitment to confession was really important to him. And then to have all of you in rome, to never tire of forgiveness. And i would like you to talk more about what it was like to see him in rome, and to hear him inspire you, and to live out the year of mercy and to share that forgiveness was so many people. You know, it was a very privilege of inclusion in the particular by did a gave to the kapitans, and we had two different ceremonies in st. Peters, and the preparation was for all of the missionaries, and he had to back liturgies two liturgies just for the kapitans. In a way, i think was mentoring to us, and when we were in the confessional. The confessional for the priest of high times is not just in a box or room. People can catch you in a corner, and the street or in the airport. But when you get into that quiet moment of intimacy, when someone opens their heart to you, he conveyed to us, and st. Peter in the chair and away from the great mass of the friars, and he spoke like a father. He spoke like a brother. As we would do in our community room. Very reflective, very personal. And very down to earth in his trying to convey, trying to share. I feel the call that he had on the holy spirit. A gentle is, a realness. I like the way he convened, very much like a franciscan. Very down to earth imagery. At one time impressing that we have to be intentional and sensitive, chris eckel toward the people coming to this very beautiful prayer that is a person with a repenting heart. And i remember one time he said, you know, if you are having one of those days where you want to keep the dog, do not go into the confessional. I thought that was very real. And it was reflective for all of us, for who we are, and who dwells within us, we have no right not to be attentive, and sensitive stewarts of the beautiful love of god that we hold in our call to share. Even you and i in our everyday lives, to pause in and how am i coming to this person. What safe and i giving them. Very beautiful. We will hear more about confession and what is mercy when we come back from the short break. Welcome back to mosaic, and im angela pollock, and with me today is father John Dela Riva, and at the st. Francis in San Francisco and the official missionary of mercy designated by pope rance is. Pope francis. Father john, you spoke so beautifully about confession and i think about the year of mercy, and one thing you said brings to mind the question about do we really get and understand mercy. I think a lot about the early church and how for them the symbol of the cross was not very popular until the seventh century. For the early christians, the symbol of the faith and for jesus it was the good shepherd, and that is the image that the vatican has used for the year of mercy. I love how the image is or the fourth century christians, it was the active image of the shepherd standing with the sheep around, and looking out and ready for action. I think about that question you post about what is mercy and do we understand it. Not only that we are called to live in the mercy, that we have been given the mercy of god, and also to go in and out to others, and it extended to so many and extend it to so many. A wonder if you can talk and explain to people what you want them to understand about mercy. I think it is essential, not just complementary, they are interwoven, the frame for divine love that is in our lives, and generally pursues us. Texas into an intimate embrace. In my own life, every one of our lives, we have to police ourselves in a way that we can be a hypersensitive. Sometimes it is in a proper way of taking note of our wrestling, challenges and limitations. How we can make a muck of things, and it can deflate us. It can put a stutter stepped into what should be a beautiful walk with the lord. And enjoyment of the lords love in our lives, and it can undercut what should be a free and authentic peace that comes from christ alone. We have the most beautiful thing, but not always is that divine love offered him her own imperfections of being buried human. We can struggle even to be the beneficiary, and this is where the mercy of god that we know. I know where you are, but if you give me your hand to me, and faith, come and enjoy. That is an essential proper place to be if you will ever authentically give the message of hope, joy and peace, the love of god to others. Beautiful, and thank you so much. I know at the National Shrine here in San Francisco, you are going to be some particular activities that will be living out the year of mercy and extending the mercy to so many. Can you share with us about what will be going on and how the people can get involved. In every parish, or like it my shrine, there can be an expanse of what we can do with our personnel, and in my case i am a fraternity of one, father john by myself. What is doable for me right now, i am extending greater blocks of confession time that is accessible. I have been reading the flow of the people that come to the shrine so that it will be most effective at periods of time to offer. There will be greater extended times of confession, capped off with the celebration of the eucharist and next position. That is going on right now. And they can go to our website, or the website for the whole week. We will have evening blocks of whole week holy week. We will have evening blocks to make it easier to take the sacrament. And we will be hosting the two patron saints of the whole year. I will have reconciliation services, and other expanded times of confession during those months. May, september and november. That is wonderful. I know we have many events going on throughout the archdiocese of San Francisco, and you can participate in confession, and also in works of mercy, and we explain to those last month. You can go to the archdiocese website featured on the screen to find out more on the calendar. We hope that you will enter into this year of mercy, to meet father john at the National Shrine, and we pray for you. We hope you have a wonderful year of mercy and at the end of life is the best and blessed time. Thank you for joining us. ,,, did you know kids who play outdoors have healthier lungs . Totally.
