And their video has more than a million views. The band ok go talks about their creative process. Theyll perform songs from their new album in our saturday psession. We begin with breaking news overnight. The senate fails to extend the controversial patriot act. It expires on june 1st. Just after midnight the senate rejected a house passed bill on a vote of 5742. The senate will take up the issue again on may 31st. It will also assess the many survey lansz techniques used by the federal government to strike terrorism in an effort to strike the right balance between National Security and civil liberties. For more on all of this we turn to a staff correspondent of the nationalnational journal. Hes been following it all week. I imagine you did not get a lot of sleep last night since this senate vote did not come in until after midnight this morning. Tell us particularly what is section 215 of the patriot act . Whats at stake . Section 215 is the part of the patriot act that allows a sort of surveillance and it was first known as the Library Records provision after 9 11. It was very controversy for privacy advocates but its grown more controversial since the Edward Snowden regulation two years ago. Theyre using this to justify its bulk collection of u. S. Call records, millions of records every day. And so for more than a year now the senate and the house of representatives have been working to reform them and to sort of usher in new transparency oversight reforms, but they still havent figured it out. As you mentioned, the deadline is just about a week away now. There were some very interesting alliances in this vote dustin. What are we seeing happen here in washington . Right. This bill in the senate failed to advance. It had already passed the house overwhelmingly with a lot of support from the house and democrats. In the senate it had just about all the democrats supporting it including senator ted cruz and senator mike lee. Ted cruz of course, is running for president. But Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell. Hes a defense hawk and him and some of the other republicans stood in the way of seeing this reform bill go ahead and they have so far succeeded in gumming up the process and they also last night thought that they could get a clean extension of the patriot act to kind of not change it at all but keep it going for a couple of months and that also failed. So were really at a standoff here and its not clear if the program might expire entirely. What about the white house . Where do they stand in all of this . This is such a topical issue. A lot of people wondering is it privacy or National Security . Which is more important . Right. The white house ramped up its efforts this week very aggressively to sort of convince the senate to pass this bill. They basically said it was the only avenue forward because it already passed the house. They agreed sort of with the reforms under it and they said basically theres no plan b. If you dont pass it w dont know whats going to happen. These might last because of the deadline thats coming and we dont know whats going to happen. Its not just bad for the nsa program that would expire but also a lot of other National Security tools that would lapse as well, that the fbi use other intelligence service. So the white house is very concerned about National Security and sort of going dark after june 1st. Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell said he will bring the senate back on may 31st to consider this again is. There a compromise possible here . Its hard to say. Yeah the senate is coming back on sunday may 31st a week from this sunday, and that is very rare for the senate to come back on a sunday after their memorial day recess. And this happened because of something really really unusual and really remarkable last night, which was senator rand paul whos also running for president and also from kentucky as mcconnell is basically used the power of one senator to block even the shorter term offerings for mcconnell. Mcconnell wanted a week long extension and he said no and then another. Its very unclear if either side is going toissue. Well, dustin we hope you get a well deserved nap today. Thank you so much. Thank you. Also breaking overnight, a first for the world is unfolding in ireland. Voters appear to have embrace add referendum legalizing samesex marriage. This is cbs this Morning Saturday. Looking for one of these . Yoplait. Smooth, creamy, and craved by the whole family. What should we do today in iraq and then syria when it looks like isis is gaining control of such an important city in the Anbar Province . I think first of all we need to change the rules of engagement for our troops. I think we dont need a significant increase in troops in my view but how theyre used needs to be changed. I think we need to be able to use them as Forward Air Controllers or spotters for our aircraft. We need to have trainers embedded probably down to the battalion level in the Security Forces but i would say with the anbar tribes and the kurds and we need to provide more opportunities for our special forces. I think that the what does that mean . To be able to operate behind the lines in iraq and in support of what the iraqi Security Forces are doing. I think the idea of this battle fundamentally is going to have to be carried out by the arabs or sunnis themselves. Whether its sunnis shiites, or kurds, i agree with that. But there are things we could do that would make our help more effective. Can i ask you about, that secretary gates . I was struck by the fact i red this morning over the past month 165 u. S. First with people heading to the beach for the unofficial start of summer reports find most americans are not using sunscreen. As we say in our house, thats a poor choice. Holly, what does this report find . Right. Its a survey released by the cdc. I guess its not surprising were not perfect in putting on the sunscreen, myself included as Research Says to avoid sign of aging and to avoid skin cancer but the numbers are striking. Just 14 of women and just 29 of women actually apply it on a regular basis to their face or hands or other exposed parts of their body. Its interest in part. Men saw sunscreen as a more feminine product so they were less likely to use it. And there are some misconceptions out there. Mainly people of color feel they cant get skin cancer which is not the case. You absolutely can get skin cancer and when they get skin cancer, its diagnosed later and more deadly. Give us a diagnosis. What do you say to all of those who dont wear it . Theres two forms of aging, intrinsic and extrinsic. Photo photoaging, theres nothing worse than that. You get that from the sun. The best case was i had a patient come into my office. He was truck driver. He had one arm outside the truck for 40 years old. He was 50 years of age. Put it everywhere. Broad speck truck. It blocks uva and uvb both. You want an spf of 30. What does that mean . Aet least a teaspoon full on your face. On your body a shot glass. What about your eyes. I had a friend who told me she burnt her eyes staying out. Thats possible. A new report from the vision report have heard of cataracts and Macular Degeneration are the cause of vision loss but many arent away that sun exposure actually raises your risk of getting both of those. So, again, with sunglasses like dr. Sobel was saying uva and uvb protection as well as our kids. The occular lens in kids is more sensitive to sun and once the damage is done it cant be reversed reversed. At the same time were told a little bit of sunshine is good for us. How do we balance those two things . It makes complete sense theres been this little bit of pushback. Weve had this great Health AwarenessCampaign RaisingHealth Awareness and protecting our skin but at the same time critics are saying were seeing vitamin b deficiencies rising because the sun is a an important tool we use to make vitamin d. I guess the question comes down to where is the balance. We need it to protect our bones. Its linked with a decreased risk of heart disease, cancers. One of the most important things is we can get vitamin d from many foods. There are many many different sources. And also minimal sun exposure, even if its just ten minute as day in the summer months is enough to help to sort of kick start that process of creating vitamin d from the sun. You do not need to throw on Dark Tanning Oil and lay out there for hours to get your vitamin d. A dermatologist examines the cost of psoriasis in the united states. It was over 35 billion in 2013. S they have been repurposed and transformed for some of the best hiking and biking in the country. Cbs travel editor Peter Greenberg is here with some of the most unique trails. Good morning. Good morning. Tell us how this started. This actually started in the 1960s. As these rail lines went out of business, they stayed there abandoned and in disrepair until they came along and started repurposing them. Were talking over 1,900 lines. Thats over 22,000 miles of trails. You always bring us breath taking views. Lets get right to it. Erie canal. Its the old mohawk and Hudson Railroad and whats great about this. You cant go more than a mile without seeing either a museum or other historical site. You dont have to do all 350. You can do ten miles. Moving on heritage rail trail park in pennsylvania. Whats great about this. Its 22 miles long. The significance of this is hanover junction. This is where an 1863 railcar with four cars took lincoln. And sadly later took his body. This takes hiker asnd bikers along some of the countrys most historic sites. Its a stretch of 20 miles. It takes you to valley forge and that historic park. Theres a colonial home used for george washington. Lets talk about the elroy sparta state trail in wisconsin. It started in 1967. Its about 32 miles. Whats great about it its on the tracks that were built in 1973. It goes through three rock tunnels. One of which is about a mile long and 30 converted train bridges. Its very cool. Next we go to south dakota, something called the george is. Mick olson trail which has 110 trails . Whats crazy about this it goes through the crazy horse monument and its the old railroad which serviced the gold rush in the black hills. Heres the fun part it ends in dead hills. If youre wondering where dead mans happened comes from, he was holding it. This is the shortest. Nine miles long eastern kansas. This is the shortest. Americans went west in 1965 and its the site of the phoneny express. Theres even an old pony express station still there. I just hope theyre not waiting for their mail. I dont think of hiking and biking when i think of las vegas but theres a trail there too . 30 miles outside of las vegas, youre going to find the historic tunnel trail which is great because this is where they blasted through the locks to go around lake mead and get through the hoover dam. Another great thing. Five great tunnels. Its cool. Thoed red rocks are so cool. Especially after you blast them. Peter greenberg, thanks for being with us. You got it. Coming up paul newman may be known as an iconic actor and raising funds for charities but thats not just his passion. Always wanted to be a jock. I wanted to play football badly. I had no physical grace. The only thing i ever found in grace was not on the field. I talk to the codirector of a new documentary about newmans life in the fast lane. Youre watching cbs this Morning Saturday. You love the city . I love the city. Mine you can make arguments for a lot of o great cities around the world, but i think new york is the most i think its the best city in the world. But new york isnt home for clooney. Home is wherever amal is, his beautiful bride of seven months. How long was it between the time that you met her yes. And you thought, oh my god. Well, ill tell you pretty quickly. I knew fairly quickly that i wanted to spend the rest of my life with amal. But, you know i have to say when i asked her, we had never talked about it. There wasnt like hey, maybe we should get married. I literally dropped it on her and she went wow. The ring and everything . Everything yeah. Where were you . It was in my home. I was in my home. I cued up of playlist of some of my aunt rosemarys songs and skied her. And she said oh my god and wow. Completely unexpected. I said listen im 53 at the time or 52 i think at the time. I said you know ive been on my knee now for about 28 minutes, so ive got to get an answer out of this or im going to throw a hip out. Im not 20 anymore. Exactly. I may not be able to stand back up. You and i have been friends for a while. Youre getting married. Youre getting married. Your return email says ive never been happier, i cant imagine. How has your life changed . You know i suppose well theres some obvious things closet space. Another decisionmaker. A real decisionmaker. Much smarter decisionmaker. Anybody want to get in trouble . Eddie, e oom going to leave. That guys a third. Want to go for a thousand . Paul newman was one of the greatest movie stars of the last century. He started in more than 60 films including hustler, Butch Cassidy and the sundance kid and the sting, although his real life passion wasnt acting. Its racing cars. A new documentary chronicles newmans life behind the wheel. Its called winning the race of paul newman. Take a look. People vote. They say him or her. This, it isnt you vote and its him or her. You either cross the finish line first and its either him or her. Technically he was really a good driver. He wanted to be looked at as a driver not as an Academy Award winner but as man who was involved with his heart and soul in racing. Racing became his passion and he went for it. Nait adams codirected this meaning with comedian adam carolla. Good morning. Good morning. How did you become interested in this . I would have to say this was adams love child. Adam collecting paul newmans race cars. Once he started collecting the cars he collected the stories and then he realized the magnitude of pauls racing career and it was a story no one really knew. He mentioned in that set uphe start racing at 47 years old. How did he get interested in it . In that story Mario Andretti tells a story of taking a hot lap which is when you go around the lap with a race car driver in the passenger seat. Ive done it. It scares the hell out of you. Mario an degreedy took paul newman on a hot lap and then he was very much interested in racing. Then there was the movie winning. He went to school with bob bon der rant and went racing. This was surprising to me. This wasnt something he did on weekends. He was a serious race car driver. He won the second at la mall. Its unbelievable to win la mall. Theres Something Else the relationship of him and willie t. Ribs we had never heard this name but he had such a profound impact on not only his career but the sport of racing through willie. Yeah. Willie t. Ribs was the first black racer to drive. He was coming up the ranks getting a lot of animosity in the racing world. He couldnt get a professional job even though he was one of the best drivers out there and couldnt get on the team. Paul newman basically called one of sponsors that he was close with and said you have to hire this guy. They hired him and he became one of the best trans am racers there ever was. After all these interviews, see all this footage do you think if we had seen him as a race car driver at 20 thats all we would have known him . They say he was a an amazing driver. He raced professionally for seven years. He had 20 top ten finish against some of the best drivers in the world. If he had started at 20, he would have been a name that we would all know as a racer. And he did it all the way into his 80s . He won his last race at 82. I dont want to lose him as a leading man. Hes pretty good too. I would show it to my wife and she would be like paul newman is so handsome. His brother has the same eyes too. Nait adams. Thanks very much for being here. Winning is available on demand. And and we mentioned adam carolla. Hell be with us on tuesday coming up. Coming up a quarter and a billion hits. Well talk with the band ok go and theyll perform in our saturday session. Now heres a look at the weather for your weekend. Up next, chef johneanpaul bourgeois knows a thing or two about southern cooking. Its just in time for memorial day weekend. I think hes basting ribs. Which is important because with fewer symptoms to distract you you can focus on the extraordinary things you do every single day. Live claritin clear. Every day. Chef jeanpaul bourgeois grew up around the southern cuisine of louisiana and he learned at a young age food brings people together. Its a lesson he learned to working restaurants in napa valley and san francisco. Hes brought that love of food and family to his position as executive chef of blue smoke enterprises. Hes also responsible for the Culinary Program at the newly opened porch light here in manhattan. Chef john paul, welcome to the dish. Thanks for having me. Happy memorial day weekend. Youve brought the perfect spread. Weve tried. We have a little bit of everything. Great bourbon smash. Im glad you started with that. Look. For your the home cook its perfect because its seasonal berries and bourbon and sugar and you can batch it out and bring it to your pick nik. Really good. We have corn muck shoe which is out of cajun country. A little watermelon and cheese salad. My favorite of all time Collard Greens and salt pork. The star in the center smoked pork ribs. Such an easy thing to eat on television. Good luck to you. I have my bib on. And then brown butter and sweet mashed potatoes which has somewhat of a following since theyre so rich. Theyre really good. Spicy and sweet. And then you have my mom, thank you, miss kathy bourgeois, seafood gumbo. Happy to share thises wepy throughout you and spread it all throughout new york. Let me talk about your life. I read initially you didnt thing chef was being a job. You went for a psychology degree. Yeah. Being a chef was actually what i did. I was a cook with all my friends wherever we went never. When i was at nicholls state i went to orientation for psychology and i spent ten minutes there. The psychologist said take a look to your left take a look to your right. One of those is going to be gone. I said thats going to be me. I walked out of orientation. It just clicked with me. I thought, thats what im going to do. Ive been good at it for a quite a while and it clicked and i never stopped after that. So that was a real turned point for you. Another turning point was an Exchange Program you went to in france. Right. So much like lebron james or Michael Jordan on the walls of young kids, great chef ss in france are on the walls in france. Pyou got an idea what food meant to those people. Then i saw a lot of parallels between living in louisiana, having a french name and a lot of french influence. I felt parallels to louisiana and france. So that was a really really awesome point in my career. That evens when i moved to napa valley. When you say which region do you like the best people will argue with you. Sure. When you came and opened blue smoke in new york and you started doing this traditional southern style of cooking, how hard was that for you . It was really hard. We wanted to break the chains of regional barbecue and new york has grown such a wonderful barbecue foodways throughout the 15 to 20 years it was introduced we said we wanted to do our own barbecue and really think youpt side the box and think about it as chefs which we all came from those types of backgrounds. Youre going to be with unof the pit masters of the big old barbecue party. Im so excited for that. Wi are as well. As i hand you a dish with meat on it because i was eating id ask you who would you have your meal with first or last . That would boo b my Beautiful Fiancee fiancee. But if the Zombie Apocalypse coming Trisha Yearwood garth brooks. Youve got to think about that Zombie Apocalypse with that next meme. Chef john paul aboriginal way.
